The Cancell Controversy
I do not have a book called The Cancell Controversy. FDA are bunch of crooks.

Very interesting cancer-killing material
Interesing book for those interested in cancer treatment alternatives - unfortunately, the government issued an injunction against the manufacturer and all production stopped. This book outlines how a product developed in the 1930's was used to cure cancer but was suppressed. This material, called, Entelev was passed on to another person, its components changed and it was called CanCell (1984).

The book outlines the rather confusing theories behind why Entelev and CanCell work. They do this by lowering the elecrical potential of cells enough to kill cancer cells but not normal cells.

The book has a copy of the laboratory report from the National Cancer Institute that shows the results with about 60 lines of cancer cells using CanCell. The results show impressive killing power against ALL of the 60 lines of cancer cells. It's unfortunate that the governmental systems we have in place do not allow full evaluation of potential alternative systems as this. Does it really work? It certainly needs to be investigated.

Laughter is the Best Medicine
This book is a compilation of humorous comments heard in teaching hospitals across America. I bought my copy while I was a medical student and its humor is relevant today. Its great for the coat pocket as you can flip through the pages and read a dozen entries in a few minutes before your beeper sends you back to work. It would be the best few dollars you could spend on a book if you work in medicine and enjoy a good giggle to reduce stress. You'll just wish you had thought of it first!

A Classic
I first saw this little book just after starting my surgical residency. I had already heard many of these "sayings" on rounds and in the OR. But having a whole book full of nice little quotes was great.

The one liners collected here, obviously from many mouths over many years, are priceless. Some, unfortunately, are dated or no longer relevant, as the art and science of surgery has progressed; but they all serve to illustrate the unique perspective and attitudes of surgeons, especially in an academic setting. All surgeons, however, were once residents, and we all will recognize events, patients, attitudes, roadblocks, and lots of other memories in this book.

It's not a book with stories --- it's like a collection of aphorisms. Every surgeon should read this one.

Unforgettable look at historic period
I first read this book 16 years ago. I have never forgotten it; it is one of my favorite books. Why? It blends architecture with medical necessity, family issues and social needs at the turn of the century. The idea that people could be cured (or not) by the winter weather of Saranac lake, with its extremely low humidity and extreme cold (40 degrees below zero days not uncommon), made tubercular people leave their children and families to go north to this tuberculosis treatment hospital while living in the town of Saranac. They'd bundle up in a cure cottage's glassed in porch, lying on an Adirondack cot made of wood, a cross between an ultra-sturdy deck chair on an ocean liner, and a hospital bed. Robert Louis Stevenson lived in his own home in Saranac lake, and Christy Mathewson was treated there also (He died of TB.) The history of tuberculosis is interesting not just from a medical, but an historical and social point of view. Anyone who enjoys architectural history will find this coffeetable style book of black and white photographs and informative text interesting. This Adirondack area is one of rich history, with the cure cottages of Saranac, the large country "cabins" of the rich New York city moguls, the Olympics in Lake Placid, and the artistry of outdoorsman Frederick Remington. This book is a wonderful addition to your historic architecture collection. It brings a long-forgotten chapter of medical care and historical architecture to life.

saranac lake tb cure cottages
this is a wonderful book for anyone who grew up in the saranac lake/adirondack area. it brings home lots of memories of the area and days gone by. i found the photos extremely interesting. for anyone who grew up in the area, as i did, you will find yourself transported back in time to houses of your friends or houses you may have occupied growing up here. i found this all very nostalgic. the text is extremely informative. you need not be interested in tb to enjoy this book, but it does give you a interesting background of tb and the growth of saranac lake.

A very good historical mystery
In 1353 Girona, Spain, the sudden death of three healthy, but discontented youths stun the townsfolk. Aaron the Baker's son, Loren, the seminarian's son, and Marc the weaver's son all die in the same horrific way. Most of the local residents believe evil witchcraft killed the three lads. However, the blind Jewish physician Isaac thinks it is more likely that mortal happenings occurred. He strongly feels an unknown assailant poisoned the trio.

Hysteria grips the town as any female could now be accused of practicing witchcraft by people seeking retaliation. Isaac, accompanied by his apprentice Yusef and his daughter-assistant Raquel, races against time to prove that a devious and deadly con artist is behind the apparent devilish disease.

Fans of historical mysteries will know that Caroline Roe is the real deal with her latest Isaac who-done-it. The story line is filled with detail and action that paints a panorama of Medieval Spain, especially the Jewish quarter. The medical mystery is absolutely awesome, but it is the depth to all the characters that turn this into one of the best historical mystery entries. CURE FOR A CHARLATAN and CHRONICLES OF ISAAC OF GIRONA are first rate reads.

A Macrobiotic Pot of Gold
This book saved my life! This is not a book to read lightly. Use highlighters & make notes. It is packed with a plethora of information that will assist anyone with a chronic condition. Dr Rogers spent a couple of years with Michio Kushi & watched & learned as he counselled chronic & terminal clients. This book explains techniques & foods that one cannot find in typical macrobiotic books. How much of this should I use? How often? If I'm craving this, what am I missing? What does this symptom mean? What is this food doing for my body? How important is this in my diet? How do I make this? What is a healing crisis? What is a healing phase? How do I put it all together? How do I begin? How do I keep it going? What do I do when I get discouraged/cravings/busy/bored? All this is answered & more - Dr Rogers speaks of supplement deficiencies that will cause certain disorders or symptoms (remember, we're dealing with chronically ill situations here that have long standing deficiencies of such great degree that balance can only be achieved through the use of supplementation). Learn what mineral deficiencies can cause high cholesterol regardless of your diet. Learn which mineral is deficient in 80% of North Americans (& causes tension, constipation, muscle knots & road rage). I rarely read a book more than once (relying on highlighted material for reference), but this book has been my bedside companion for many a year, helping me through MCS and its companion symptoms. No other diet has given me the peace, centredness & relationship with my body as has macrobiotics, but I was never able to fully appreciate what the diet could do for me until I read this book. If you have the courage to leave behind all the trappings of the typical Western diet, this book will show you how, with effort & organization & understanding, how you can make every cell in your body cry out for joy, finally able to function at their optimum level.

Sherry was my doctor!
Sherry Rogers was my doctor for a number of years. She was always ahead of her time and now it shows! All of her books are wonderful, informative, easy to read and life saving. I hope everyone gets as much from this and all her books as I have. You'll be amazed at how much you DON'T know about your body, the environment and how we are killing ourselves until you read these books. Trust me, I am only a consumer here, but I pass these books on to everyone I care about and have for years! I'm going to post this to all the books I have read by Sherry. I just can't say enough about this woman. She literally saved my life (allergies, life and health threatening mineral and vitamin deficiencies) and my husband's too (bladder cancer). Love, Susan Manchester

"Storyteller of the saints"
The Cure of Ars is one of the most exciting books about the saints done by the "story teller of the saints" Mary Fabyan Windeatt. This book tells how St. John Vianney had trouble becoming a priest, his lifelong work at the town of Ars, his fights with the devil, about the pilgrims flocking to the town, his attempts to become a hermit, and his holy death. I strongly recommend this book to any person who is studying for the priesthood or is thinking of it. I like this book for numerous reasons. The main reason I like this book is how the author writes it. She makes you feel that you are in the story with the saint. This is what she wrote at the beginning of the book... "My name is John, and I have been dead since August 4, 1859. How happy I am! For my soul is in Heaven. Yes, for eternity I am privileged to see God... For endless eternity I enjoy a happiness that is beyond the power of mere words to describe."

Lifestory of Saint with Catholic doctrinal truths for kids!
This book is great for readers of ages 10-100. There are 211 pages with each chapter's reading not more than 10-12 pages each. The story relates the life of the Saint John Vianney from childhood to deathbed. It conveys how human Vianney was as well as the virtues that made him a saint, most especially how humble he was and his perserverance against the attacks of the devil. If you want to inspire a young boy to the priesthood, if you are a Catholic homeschooling family, if you teach Catholic religious education, or someone just interested in learning what a parish priest life is like, then this is the book for you!

Great and Desperate Cures: The Rise and Decline of Psychosurgery and Other Radical Treatments for Mental Illness

Frightening Account of Medical Malpractice
This is an incredible story. Thousands of people had their brains mutilated and personalities destroyed in a grand experiment to cure schizophrenia and other mental disorders. What's so incredible is that scientists and physicians, principally Walter Freeman in the book, advocated this procedure based on theories of the brain and mental disorders without much evidence to support their claims. In fact, the theories are almost an afterthought to justifiy the procedure. I'm absolutely amazed at the breathtaking irresponsibility of the medical and psychiatric communities allowed this to go on. Valenstein starts the book by tracing the history of physical "cures" from water treatment to electroshock therapy. What Valenstein proves is that lobotomy is really just another attempt by the psychiatric communitiy to apply specualtive theory and boldly experiment on human beings. This was possible because serious mental disorders, like schizophrenia, seemed hopeless. The medical community and public was willing to try anything. In this context, Valenstein explains the driving forces that helped lobotomy to gain wide popularity: the medical profession's willingness to try anything and uncritical acceptance of advocates' claims of success - even giving the inventor of the procedure a Nobel Prize; the media's fascination with strange medical procedures and the almost universal blind acceptance of doctor's claims; and finally, the public institutions' desire to save money - lobotomized patients were released from institutions or were easier to handle. As a layman, I assume scientists are objective and critical thinkers and, doctors are humane heroes - "to do no harm". This book demolishes those illusions and keeps your skeptical mind razor sharp.

A Must Read for Critical Thinkers
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a fascinating and mind boggling true story. It describes the history of psychosurgery, otherwise known as lobotomy. More than that though, it is a story of human folly. Most people do not question accepted beliefs. They follow blindly the fashion of the times. In this instance, it is the medical establishment that was blind, quick to espouse a radical and harmful surgical procedure, without examining the evidence to support it's use. It's extremely well researched, sticks to the facts and never lapses into rhetoric. That is precisely what makes this true story so amazing.

It's a crime that this book is out of print. It's a must read, not only for people interested in the history of psychiatry, but for anyone who is interested in the evolution of ideas. Five stars do this book no justice. If I could print it myself, I would.

Here Be Dragons: The Psychological Problem, Cause & Cure
Published in Hardcover by A Train Press (03 January, 2002)
Author: Manuel J. Smith
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

Want to be honest with yourself? The book will show you how
Dr. Smith builds on his classic WHEN I SAY NO I FEEL GUILTY, using the assertive techniques with special emphasis on FOGGING (agreeing with the truth, odds or principle of what your critics say) and NEGATIVE INQUIRY -- inquiring about the criticism to either get to the point of what is really the problem, or exhausting the critic.

He gives an extremely helpful look at the phenomenon called "psychological problem," and shows how it develops. He then gives a system that anyone can use to work through problems.

It has helped me to face up to my nagging "inner critic" -- that nasty little voice in my imagination that loves to tell me about what a loser I am and how I'll never succeed. In fact, I've found it helpful to actually write down the inner critic's accusation and write my assertive responses to them!

It might help to read WHEN I SAY NO I FEEL GUILTY first, but the book can also stand on its own.

How to slay dragons
Manuel J. Smith has come out with a new and much needed book on assertiveness. Assertiveness means nothing more than making desions based on your own understanding of the facts. Doing this, as Smith explains involves using higher brain functions.

When we are made to feel guilty or shameful or angry in someway, a reflex gets triggered and we adopt a flight/fright response involving the more primitive brain. So, says Smith, if we are assertive we need to find a way to employ higher brain functions. As Smith explains it, the answer to assertiveness come in the form of another reflex which, when triggered, automatically sets higher brain functions
into motion.

In earlier works, Smith provided his readers with practical "assertive responses" which are easily memorized and serve to trigger the reflex which employs higher brain functions. The problem, however, was getting people to use these responses. In his new book, Smith addresses the idea of "self-talk". Here Smith teaches you how to apply "assertive responses" to negative or crooked self-talk, to trigger the higher brain reflex, and enable more assertive living.

Fans of CBT will say that Smith is just "training" the subconscious. However, Smith makes the case that his approach to self-talk works much quicker than CBT ever could.

There a weakness with this book. The book is partly self-help and partly a professional address to fellow psychologist about Smith own brand of behaviorism.
Thus, the narrative voice seems to amble from an informal address to a professional one. Also, since I am not a professional, I could have done without the latter part.
(Since he dealt with professional matters, I wish he would have examined the idea of the "freeze" response as being something other than flight/fright and having to do with the engagement of the "social instinct" or "smart vagus")

In terms of the self-help, the book is WONDERFUL and SHOULD BE READ BY EVERYONE. It has all the virtues of a Smith book: it is deeply practical, funny, and it makes perfect sense.
