Award-Winning Wild Satirical Romp
This debut book by Barbara Jones won the 2000 Georgia Author of the Year Award for "First Novel."

In "Moonlight Bowl Manifesto: A Cure for California," Barbara Jones has fashioned a wild satirical romp over social and political correctness. When a member of a bowling team comes up with an instant wood-eating formula, the bowlers hold hostage an auditorium filled with famous people by threatening to destroy a forest, particularly a famous tree called General Sherman. The book is filled with memorable characters, such as a woman who believes her pig is the reincarnation of her dead husband, and a lawyer who has to share her body with Margaret Mitchell and a hippie. Among the other strange folks is a celebrity who has to take medication to lighten his skin and maintain his feminine characteristics, until his privileges are taken away and strange things begin to happen to his mind and body. A fun read.

AN ABSOLUTE RIOT
The funiest book I have read in years. If you liked The Mouse That Roared you will love this one.

Manifestly Clever
Moonlight Bowl Manifesto is a bit wacky, a little wicked and lots fun. Barbara Jones dissects contemporary California society with wit and humor. When the bowling team 'kidnaps' the chi chi California crowd, chuckles and even belly laughs are inescapable. A wonderful read--thought provoking in the best tradition of well written satire.

Please Be Aware Of His Current Condition
I found this book to be excellent and recommend it as required reading to anyone who is currently battling cancer. However, please be aware that shortly after the book was published, Mr. Ruzic's cancer returned. The knowledge he gained during his hunt for the cure is invaluable - a real eye-opener to world of cancer treatment. He managed to excellently stem the progress of his cancer without using chemotherapy until this past year.

If you have cancer or are close to one who does, please read the book, but understand that the author had not yet been cured.

A real life adventure with the ultimate stakes--saving lives
I loved this book. Read it!! It really should have been publicized much more; far lesser books end up on the NYT bestsellers list. It is a true adventure story about a man diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma (one of the worst cancers) who refuses to be just another sheep within America's "chemo culture". Instead, he crisscrosses the country in his own airplane, meeting and talking to scientists (the true cancer doctors) within their own laboratories, at the cutting edge of knowledge, in order to try to find a cure for his disease. This book was truly eye-opening, and it is even worth a second-read. It was written with the painstaking efforts of a great science writer who can effectively communicate to the layman and hold the interest of scientists at the same time, something that's very hard to do. I applaud Mr. Ruzic's achievements and his selfless efforts to help others who haven't been blessed with his intellect and financial advantages in life. We need people like him in government. Things really need to be shaken up in the FDA. Ironically, the slow progress in the development effective new clinical treatments for cancer continues at a time when the scientific understanding of cancer and its molecular bases has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 8 years. One problem appears to be that oncologists have their hands tied by the FDA, and as a result, they often neglect to keep up with the latest developments. This is why we continue to lose so many people to cancer, and so many cancers remain completely incurable (e.g. pancreatic cancer). For instance, even with new cancer vaccines and monoclonal antibodies under development, virtually all clinical trials today require the patient to first take massive doses of highly toxic chemotherapeutic agents. Often cocktails of toxic chemotherapeutic drugs are used that simultaneously devastate the immune system and end up making the cancer refractory to further treatment. What remedies can be taken against this wrong-headed philosophy in order get more of the latest less toxic biotherapies from the lab and into the clinic NOW? After reading this book, it is clear to me that the hospital administrators overseeing the oncology residency programs in America need to be replaced with fresh blood. Also, the FDA needs to be reformed from the ground up. I especially liked one quote in this book, which I have found to be so true, "Welcome to the world of cancer, where doctors are witches and patients are doctors........" Such is the state of affairs in this country, where our government has given us third-rate medical care for cancer, with doctors who fill your body with toxins and then leave you for dead, telling you there is nothing more that can be done. We deserve better treatment, even if that simply means regaining our God-given freedom to treat our own bodies against this dreaded disease.

Neil attributes his cure to his innovation and persistence
Racing To A Cure is the personal memoir of Neil Ruzic, a former scientific magazine publisher and originator of a science center, who in 1998 was diagnosed with mantle-cell lymphoma, a deadly cancer of the lymph system. Even though he was expected to die within two years of being diagnosed, five years later he has been declared cancer free. Neil attributes his cure to his innovation and persistence; rather than rely chemotherapy and radiation treatment which is notorious in frequently being ineffective for long-term cures, he pursued cures that were being developed in the nation's cancer-research laboratories. Racing To A Cure presents Neil's discoveries in a harshly analytical light, attacking other "chemo culture" and unscientific "alternative" therapies while presenting the virtues and successes of state-of-the-art molecularly based technologies. Racing To A Cure is "must" reading for anyone having to deal with cancer in their lives or the lives of their loved ones.

You have to have an open mind to read this book and know that is all based on true stories from very serious people. I happen to believe that "we are not alone" and it's wonderful to hear that the ET are here to help, inspire and heal. You won't be able to put this book down. Thank you, Virginia.

VIRGINA has given us a wonderful gift in writing this book so that those beings that need our help can come to us. THANK YOU Virgina we bless you always.

Hard to Put this Book Down
Virginia Aronson has a wonderful knack for keeping the reader on the edge of her seat. I truthfully could not put this down. She has done a great job of investigating and research which really makes this great reading -- knowing how much work went into this book. There is more to healing than we realize and I feel this book will help to open the frontier to more information regarding celestrial healings. Keep up the great work Virginia.

The most beautiful poetry of our time.
Robert Smith's lyrics are of another world. He is the only true poet of our generation. His words can create emotions that Dickinson would be jealous of. The Cure Songwords is an incredible book every Cure fan must own. As for those who do not know of the Cure. Just read the book and you'll know the beauty of Robert Smith.

"Songwords" is pure poetry.
Robert Smith is undoubtably one of the most gifted songwriters of our time. His lyrics are full of unique imagery, with emotions that range from the highs of elation to the depths of dispair... The words are sometimes soothing-- other times bordering on disturbing and bizarre-- but always honest and thought-provoking. His lyrics stand alone beautifully as modern poetry.

Simply a must for collectors....
This is the collection of emotions, more than words... a collection of thoughts an history of the Cure. Lyrics to everything up through Disentigration, it is a must for any die hard Cure collector. Ever wonder what the lyrics to some of those b-sides on the Kiss Me album, they're in here!!!

An Essay on Brewing, Vintage and Distillation, Together With Selected Remedies for Hangover Melancholia: Or, How to Make Booze

Author: John Festus, Adams

Like a good wine, withstands the test of time
I bought this book back in the early 70s. During that decade I read it repeatedly (and it shows), made mead and wine based on its loose instructions, and unwittingly expanded my worldview thanks to its digressions into mythology and epic poetry. Thirty years later, I dared to brew beer using a kit (a 2002 Christmas gift from a well-meaning niece), and the result was barely potable. I pulled this book from the book archives, made my first batch according to Adams, and never returned to the kit.

Times have changed since the writing of 'An Essay.' Mead is now relatively available, the law prohibiting homebrewed beer was reversed in 1978, brewing supply shops abound, and wine shops are many. Still, Adams instructs us -- no doubt as he did his students in the great state of Washington -- in the general concepts of making a fairly good beer inexpensively, producing an ancient drink that still gladdens the heart (and produces a nasty hangover), home-distilling substances that the government still frowns upon, and producing a good wine from those local fruits.
I wonder if Adams ever considered a "How to Make Booze Revisited."

Everclear!
A true treasure from an era gone bye. Excellent for the reader with a desire to embark on the journey of homebrewing without the snobbish, elitest, cynicism usually found in do it yourself, how to books. Also, excellent for the reader that posesses true curiosity and a love for "reader friendly" words. A quick read that provides both laughter and actual instruction with pinch of back to the earth philosophy.

Very entertaining and even informative.
I can't remember where I got my copy, it was at my bedside for years and every couple months I would read (or re-read) a chapter or two. One day, my wife sold it at a garage sale for 10 cents. I decided not to divorce her because of the children.

Clear guidelines!
Gottman, the leading researcher in the area of marriage and other intimate relationships, provides in this latest book a simple, yet very effective 5-step-model of enhancing and deepening your personal relationships.
This program builds upon the results of several longitudinal studies. This means, the advice offered is based not on personal opinion (like so many other authors do), but on solid research findings. Gottman starts by introducing the basic element of human relationships, the bid. A bid is any single expression that says "I want to feel connected to you". Failed bid processes are the root cause of many problems in human relationships.
The 5 step Gottman offers are:
1) Look at your bids for connection: here the reader learns to distinguish among turning-towards, turning-away and turning-against responses and their effects
2) Discover your brain's emotional commmand system: this chapter is especially illuminating because it deals with 7 emotional systems with their distinct linkages to behaviors and feelings. It demonstrates how these systems can cause problems in bidding processes
3) Examine your emotional heritage: in my opinion, this is the best part of the book. Several exercises reveal your family's way of dealing with emotions such as pride, anger, fear, and accomplishments. You beome aware of your personal way of relating to others and how they relate to your earlier experiences. Another part is devoted to your enduring emotional vulnerabilities.
4) Sharpen your emotional skills: various exercises are aimed at improving your emotional intelligence.
5) Create shared meaning: another very important part, not only for marriages. It encourages the reader to explore his and the other's personal dreams and visions. It also urges to create a deeper level of connecting by the use of rituals.

By and large, this book is an excellent example of science applied to real life. Everyone interested in improving his personal relationships should read this book!

Does It Again
This is another outstanding book by Dr. Gottman and his research team. Instead of an author giving his own personal opinions of what he thinks make good marriages, Dr. Gottman actually observes hundreds and finds what they have in common. Two major bits he observed in happy couples were paying attention to each other and elements of romance. From all the very happy couples I know, I would agree.

I'd recommend looking at The Romantic's Guide for ideas on easy ways to keep being romantic.

Superb manual for mindful relating with authentic E.Q.
I feel privileged to pick this book to mark my 100th review for Amazon.com. I've been recommending to numerous groups Gottman and co-authors' books, esp. the less technical ones: The Heart of Parenting (which is in Chinese also), Why Marriages Succeed or Fail and The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

With almost 3 decades of research of actual interactions, Gottman and teams' books are always filled with vivid and enlightening examples. The touching personal stories, elucidating questionnaires, exercises and long lists of "what to do" are all helpful and practical. They hold up multi-dimensioanl mirrors to explorations. Without having to do any formal meditation, you can grow in awareness and mindfulness.

Given the plethora of popularization, it might sound trite to relate this book to E.Q. (Emotional Intelligence). But it IS one of the best books for developing mindful emotional connections. That's why I need to qualify it with "authentic E.Q.". Please note in particular "Emotional Intelligence Versus Detachment and Denial" (pp. 158-160).

Please read the informative Book Description and the review by Mitchell (one of my "favorite people"). In Step One, breaking down communication to the basic unit of exchange, "bidding", and responding (turning toward, away or against), helps one to learn HOW to behave differently instead of remaining at lofty levels of unfruitful talk about love and consideration... (This reminds one of Eric Berne's "stroking" in Transactional Analysis, most popular in the 60s & '70s. "Stroking" however, connotes more manipulation.)

The authors have done a good service to make Jaak Panksepp's pioneering studies in Affective Neuroscience accessible to readers in Step Two: Discover Your Brain's Emotional Command Systems. (It would be interesting to see if there are any correlations with the Enneagram systems, which study nine-types of personality.)

Step Three: Examine Emotional Heritage, gives a good illustration of the value of the "emotion-coaching philosophy". The other books that I've mentioned give many more examples.

Step Four: Sharpen Your Emotional Communication Skills, gives interesting coverage to sharpen sensory acuity and listening skills (much stressed in NLP, Neuro-linguistic Programming). [I personally tend to differ from the author's sweeping dismissal of "the pseudoscience of physiognomy", p. 178. I still see some value of a more scientific approach in verifying the significance of permanent features and also fleeting changes in physiognomy. Cf. My several reviews of "face-reading".]

Step Five: Find Shared Meaning, brings us beyond behaviorism and studies truly human interactions and rituals.

Detailed applications of these 5 steps are given to different relationships: marital, parental, friendship, sibling, coworker. The book is ideal for personal and shared reflections, retreats, marriage encounters and workshops. I have already been actively promoting it and sincerely hope that it will reach the best-seller list. Gottman and team well-deserve the reputation and publicity they receive. Readers will not be disappointed. Relationships not needing cure will also be much enriched. [From a Christian viewpoint, it is in relationships that we can reflect the communion and unity in diversity of the Trinity, that we continue to become the image of God, and embody the presence of Christ today. Salvador Dali's Last Supper depicted a Risen Christ without any face. It is the quality of our relationships that will show forth the face of God.]

Thinking About Therapy? What to Expect From "The Talking Cure"

Incredibly Helpful on a Difficult Subject
As someone just beginning to consider therapy, this book has been incredibly helpful. The author writes in a very sensitive and caring way, and it feels like a friend just sitting and talking to you about therapy. She is very honest about what you can expect, what therapy is and what it isn't. The book is full of honest answers to questions that I had not thought about but which are so important to consider before starting therapy, in order to have the best experience possible. The best part is that it is presented in a step-by-step way so that the whole process does not seem overwhelming, but feels very manageable. After reading this book, I am much more confident and realistic about what therapy will involve. The question and answer format really helps organize the information so you can easily find just about any topic for which you are looking. The section about professional associations and recommended resources provides so much information that would take forever to find on your own. This is just what I needed to read!

Like having a friend in the therapy business
At a time when we are most emotionally fragile and can truly benefit from therapy, it's often difficult or impossible to think of all the right questions to ask and all the other details involved in seeking that therapy. While classes or orientations exist for most potentially life-altering ventures, therapy is unfortunately not one of them. For me, this incredibly insightful and informative book completely demystified the therapy process and answered many questions I had not even considered.

Through the use of a casual question and answer format, the author generously shares her knowledge and experience in a way that's amiable and unintimidating-a lot like sitting down and talking to a friend. I especially enjoyed the poems at the beginning of each chapter--they really enhanced that warm, fuzzy feeling.

Whether you've considered therapy or not, this book is a great read for anyone struggling with seemingly insurmountable emotional obstacles and looking for answers.

Embarassed about getting therapy?
If you ever thought about getting therapy but to afraid this book is for you. She clearly explains why getting therapy is like talking to a friend that can listen and give you unbiased feedback. Also lays out the ground work and steps for you to find the right therapist for your needs. Good Read! A+

The Biopsychiatrist Point of View well laid out
Dr. Gold takes a medical approach to curing depression. He eliminates the false causes, through medical tests, to find the true source of affliction. He lists the possible biological disorders that can mimic depression, the key indicators, and the methods used to detect them. Then he lists the mood disorders and the means of discovering their severity and proceeds to explain what therapies he would recommend. A very well written book, critical of doctors that misdiagnose patients, encouraging in his belief that all depressions can be managed and cured. A good guidebook to approaching your doctor, fair in its balance of psychotherapy and psychopharmacology as treatments, and very sincere in its positive message to all patients that have depressive symptoms.

The Penultimate Diagnosis and Treatment
In 1986, the psychiatrists in Canada insisted on trying a series of antidepressants on me, even though I told them that I could not tolerate them. I could not tell them exactly what was going on, but suffice to say that the things that you hear about anti-depressants instigating suicide, violence, and/or homicide are true. The doctors then wanted to hospitalize me and give me Halperidol to suppress the effects of the antidepressants! If I had let them do this, I am sure that I would never have recovered to a stable state.

In 1987 I came across a newspaper review of an earlier edition of "The Good News About Depression" by Dr. Gold. I read the book, and immediately made arrangements to go to Fair Oaks Hospital. I was tested and interviewed as a clinic outpatient, and within three days, the psychiatrist informed me that persons who exhibit the characteristics which I do (positive on depression indicator tests, intolerance of standard antidepressants) often respond to lithium treatment, even though they do not present bipolar symptoms. None of the MANY doctors with whom I consulted in Canada, including those at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, knew about this important fact. I responded quickly to lithium, and within a month I was able to work, after being "unstabled" to work for a year and one-half. Since then I take lithium prescribed by my family doctor, I have not been to see a psychiatrist since, and I have had no other therapy of any kind for 17 years. You will find lithium listed in the monograph as an "anti-manic agent", but for me it is the opposite, an antidepressant. Who knew? No one except the experts at Fair Oaks in Summit.

Dr. Gold and his associates are The Best, and this book is The Word! If you, or a member of your family, or a friend, has anything that seems to be incipient depression, then get this book. Get your physician to refer you, make an appointment and go right to the Fair Oaks Hostpital. It is your life. They are the real experts, and you will never be sorry. They will give your life back to you, just as they did for me.

The Bible of Overlooked Medical Causes of Depression
The work of Mark Gold and his associates was an eye-opener for me when I was researching (author's book plug alert) the first edition of my book, Dealing with Depression Naturally. It was they who discovered, over 20 years ago, that there is a substantial subgroup of depressives - mostly middle-aged women - who are resistant to therapy because they have a relatively mild or subclinical degree of hypothyroidism that eludes diagnosis unless sensitive, seldom employed tests are used. Thankfully, "the thyroid solution" is finally being recognized by the mainstream. But Gold et al. (and other "biopsychiatrists") are hip to a much, much broader array of established medical/physical illnesses and conditions (literally 100 or so) that also can cause or promote the symptoms of depression, without attracting the attention of the average doctor bent on whipping out the old prescription pad after a cursory physical examination and history, at best.

This book - written with the help of a popular writer to make it an easy read for the average Jane and Joe - will educate you (and your doctor, if s/he is willing) about the range of hidden (if you don't look, they're still "hidden") medical/physical causes that could be causing or contributing to your depression (but not including some of the fringier ones, like brain allergies and Candida) and how to rule them in or out and, in many cases, treat THEM instead of the secondary depresion. With authoritative estimates that up to 50% of depressions are accompanied by physical illnesses that could be playing a causative role - and preventing depressives from recovering fully or at all, even when treated with the latest, greatest drugs (which Gold also discusses in depth, but circa 1995, along with a few natural alternatives and adjuncts) - this kind of knowledge is real power.
