Unlocking Swerdlow
This, my very first e-book, was an adventure into the unknown with only the title as a guide. The short text is actually a collection of six recent essays, mainly discussing the role of herbs today. (That piece of information alone may help one decide to buy or to leave on the e-shelf.) Some very useful discussion is provided by Ness, Hurd and Hathaway who all provide insights into specific plants with evidence from the most recent research. Those three papers are in layman's language and are easily read and very informative. Balentine's contribution is an out-of-context report by a panel of scientists. Whilst some of the information is pertinent to the tone of the previously mentioned essays, its inclusion here is inconguous with the intended audience. The same could be said of the anonymous paper "Gardens in the Woods". I have no idea why it was included. The gem of the e-document is Joel Swerdlow's "Unlocking the Green Pharmacy". He provides a wonderful overview of the place, or rather, the -non-place, of herbs in our modern culture. It is an entertaining, thought-provoking piece and alone is worth the read. On the technical side of e-documents, may I say the turnaround time is beyond Jules Verne's imagination but I do miss not having a number on each page.

Anything that heals...
My son gave this book to me to find him some cure for few of his niggling health problems, nohing serious. So I went ahead in earnest digging up cures.I am pretty impressed at the authenticity of some of the cures mentioned here for they are familiar, having been passed on from generation to generation since ages and I am glad Sairam has not missed them. But then we have had score of such books why pick this one? There isnt much reason actually if you are an Indian for you'd know most of these remedies from your grandmother or even mother.Still there are a lot of surprises eg I never thought Fenugreek, a very hard to digest item on the dinner table in whose preparation lots of garnishing needs to be added, could also be a cure for indigestion and duedonal ulcers(and you just need to boil and eat with honey.Amazing!).names in different languages also help when you go shopping for the ingredients and most,i must say, are easily available:sometimes just a trip to the kitchen or the fridge suffices. Also, for a single ailment there are many remedies one could try, and safe in the knowledge that these are tried and tested prescriptions you are been offered. But what this book has which many others dont is th systematic indexing of both the herbs and the diseases for easy reference.

Need you forget about your local physician? Afraid not.For this book just prescribes;the diagnosis better be by an approved medical authority. These remedies could supplement your prescribed drugs(again with advise from your physician)for in most cases an Indian home would be using the same ingredients already in the prearation of meals. These remedies might not be effective in all cases but they will seldom harm you.

And by the way my son says he is feeling better having tried one of the concoctions I prepared for him. well, so far so good.I shall keep my fingers crossed.

Not for people who'd like to preserve
This book was written with a distinct Euro flavor, and specifically does not cover salt cure for preservation. Unfortunately, this was why I bought the book. If you're looking for methods of preservation, don't buy it. If you're looking for how to make kippers or kinnan salmon, fine. I found nothing useful to an American looking to learn the old ways of salt/brine cure and smoking for quality preservation.

Fairly Adequate treatment of Title but... no Cigar
I am a software engineer with a great liking for foreign languages and discovering the wonders of different cultures.

I got this book because i liked Michael M. Gruneberg's work on his "Language By Association" series. I am currently learning German and find his suggestions & techinques for remembering words and their associated meanings,in his 'German By Association' book rather canny.

Seeing as I had a hunger for other ideas he harboured regarding memory & remembering and also, in a casual bid to gather a bit of background on how he came to develop his word association technique. i decided to give this book a whirl.

about the book: I found three quarters of the book to be about scenarios where one's absent mindedness et cetera, would lead to forgetfulness in executing a task at the appropriate time required . followed by the writers suggestions, as to solutions to these situations.

The other quarter of the book was representative of the actual techniques for remembering names, faces, numbers, speeches et cetera. It introduces the ideas of Loci, the Digit-letter technique for remembering numbers and such .

i found the writers somewhat exhaustive accounts of memory failures they have experienced in the past -(the greater part of the book), not very useful.

people experience these types of situations and do recognize that they need to deal with them by exercising greater care if they encounter them types of situations in the future.

In short, i thought their solutions / suggestions for the scenarios cited, rather common sense.

However, I found the chapter on techniques to aid remembering speeches, words, dates , numbers, peoples names & their associated faces, more rewarding and insightful and could'nt help feeling that the book should have showcased these ideas a bit more.

To me, the book would have more fully earned its title had further discussions on the practical applications of these methods for remembering -(as alighted upon in the short one chapter on memory techniques) been revealed and readers been shown how they might bring these ideas into play in more every-day type activities that require a fairly decent memory.

Suggestions for futher reading?
Give: Harry Loraynes ['Memory book'] a try.
(and/or)
Pierce J. Howards ['Owner's Manual for the Brain'] a go.

cheers.

A glimpse at provincial life
Balzac's writing is a bit too descriptive for my tastes but this was a well written book. It portrays the biases of provincial life and the irony of the main character is quite an intriguin one though it does lead to a predicatble ending for him.

Reads like a lead brick!
All three novels are wonderful. They are real page turners, and I would definitely recommend reading them all. However, combining three novels into one hardback book is a BAD idea, despite the great price. The book weighs a ton, and it is cumbersome to read and carry around with you.

Content different than other books like it, Hard to read
I read this book for an intro counseling class and it was somewhat hard to read, especially the first few chapters. It does contain a lot of good information, history and perspective of different therapies. It is a good supplement to a more traditional psychotherapy intro book as this one does not go into methodical detail about each therapy. The author does share some personal experiences with different therapies and those are very interesting to read. It is also different in that it briefly introduces eastern philosophies and therapies which is good to help the reader get a broader perspective of the field.

Acupuncture: How it Works, How it Cures gives a solid overview of the theories behind the science, illustrating all the main concepts clearly and colorfully. The book explains how acupuncture can work in conjunction with Western medicine, and it maps the different meridians, energy zones of the body that determine needle placement. It also delineates the traditional Chinese medical concepts of dampness, dryness, wind, cold, and heat, which acupuncturists use to diagnose patients. For example, a person whose pain spreads throughout the body would be said to have "an excess of wind,&qout; and a person who is "too cold" will be lethargic and experience sharp, rather than aching, pain. Hill and Firebrace list dozens of ailments that acupuncture can treat, but they admit its limits as well. The book also delves briefly into herbalism and lists resources for finding a practitioner.

Out of date
The book is OK for the layman. However it doesn't really get into how it works and how it cures. The case studies are also very old. However, it is an easy read and great for those who have never heard of Chinese Medicine before.

A better book is
the web that has no weaver &
Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine.

Accupuncture How it Works
A real "where the rubber meets the road" read. For those who want to know more about the complete approach through accupuncture, Peter and Sandra do an excellent job in shedding all the light needed. An A-Z what I would term as a "handbook" on Accupuncture. I wish I had known about this book prior to my first treatment! A must read. L Jackson Olivebridge, NY

Terrible Advice - I couldn't believe it!
Like the writer from Memphis, I too bought this book in good faith. I had to re-read the author's comments on spaying and neutering a thousand times I was so dumbfounded. "Spaying and neutering deprives a dog from the joys of parenthood"? Are you kidding me? It is absolutely that kind of thinking that leads to the millions of homeless animals that have to be euthanized. My advice to the author, spend a few weeks volunteering at a shelter (I have volunteered at one for 3 years) Witness shelters that are bursting at the seams because of his logic. Maybe then the author would realize that the "joys of parenthood" mean nothing when faced with the realities of euthanasia

Natural pet cures: Dog and cat care the natural way
I bought this book in good faith that it would help me with three rotty puppies I rescued. One got sick with parvo so I started the treatment on the hour with the formula described in this book. I even started the well puppies on the formula on the hour.My puppies are so sick at this point,4 days later that I am putting 2 down today because they are to weak to throw up.I wish I could sue.My heart is breaking.

A Good Book
I bought this book to use for a college course even though the reviews were poor. I found this book to be helpful. It had some different alternatives to the usual holistic and natural cures. Give this book a try.
