Love, Sex and Guns: A Summary of The Amores, by Ovid
The Amores, by Publius Ovidius Naso, will leave your loins on fire and your heart as cold as ice. Coming from a time of Roman warriors and Greek gods, Publius Ovidius Naso, better known as Ovid, set the world and its many women on fire. With his mentions of charm and perfect bodies, he captures his audiences' hormones, as well as their imaginations. In The Amores, Ovid expresses sexual reminiscences of a woman named Corrina who may just as well be fictional. He tells us of her beautiful long hair and the body she possesses that is nothing short of perfect. Ovid shares with us his analysis of love as well as life.

Review: Ovid's Amores
Review: Ovid's Amores
The three books of Ovid's Amores depict a mockery of the values held during the first century of the Christian era. Ovid attempts to show the world the lack of importance in the great virtues presented in many of the major epics of the time. Amores uses satire to describe the author's wooing of women to waging war. It suggests that Ovid's efforts to romance his lovers are much more essential to life than the battles that are taking place during the time period. In that, he proposes that one should live for the day. Duty and valor are all pointless in the end. These ideas were of course very unpopular with the emperor Augustus. After the writing of one of his works the emperor banished Ovid from Rome.
Ovid was a Roman elegist who expressed a carpe diem attitude during a time where duty and honor were more valuable than life itself. He was born Publius Ovidus Naso in the town of Sulmo (now called Sulmona), near Rome in the year 43 BC. He was a highly educated man, originally skilled in the art of law. However, his passion was for literature and he spent a great deal of his time writing his own works rather than studying the past. His poetry of love probably stems from his own relationships, for by the age of 30 he had married three times and was divorced twice, with rumors of affairs. He lived an extravagant life and was well-it respected by the people of Rome. This high profile Roman life lasted until approached the age of 50 when he was banished from Rome by Augustus. The reasons behind the banishment are unclear. Some say it is a result of a disapproval by Augustus of Ovid's work while others say that Ovid knew too much of a scandal that involved the emperor's daughter Julia. He was exiled to Tomi, in the Roman province of Dacia, and although he never lost his citizenship, he never returned to Rome and died in Tomi in the 17 AD.
Ovid's works can be categorized into three periods: his early works, his middle works, and the works written after his exile from Rome. His works, in contrast to popular works of the time such as Vergil's Aenied, are sharp in contrast. Although his ideas ran contrary to the beliefs of the time, Ovid was extremely popular in Rome. Amores was written in his early period, when the focus of his writings was on love. His middle works concentrate more on mythology and creationism, while his latter works, those written after his exile, have a depressing and bitter tone. He is said to have influence many English writers, including William Shakespeare and John Milton, and was one of the Roman poets with a tremendous impact on the writers of both the Middle Age and Renaissance periods.
During this time period in Rome the emperor Augustus favored and promoted the ideas of honor and duty. Those loyal to Rome were expected to embrace these values without question. Because of this writers such as Vergil gained much approval with the emperor. Their writings embraced these ideas and even portrayed them as being greater than love. Ovid's style and theme in Amores as with most of his writings favors a less dutiful attitude toward life.
Ovid's Amores also known as The Erotic Poems describes the poet's love affair with a woman named Corinna. In a series of three books Ovid depicts the phases of his relationship. He starts buy telling us how he came to write about love, and his encounter with cupid. (...)Corinna becomes the target of Ovid's love. During an afternoon he tells us of a rendezvous experienced with his new found love and spares little detail. As Ovid goes through his tale of love with Corinna he describes many experiences with her that begin to change from beginning to end. Ovid begins comparing his love affair and love in general to the efforts of war. (...) Here we see his analogy of war with love. When Carinna locks Ovid out during the writing of an epic he explains the unimportance of his work. (...)Ovid explains how his words are more effective then the strongest weapons. Poetry can open the doors of any young girl. Ovid's message is clear throughout Amores. Things such as duty and honor should not be worried about. One must live for the moment.

(...)

Ovid- a Master of both the Art of Love and Poetry
Ovid, the young dandy none of the most beautiful women of Rome could resist, in the Amores describes his crazy love to the etera Corinna. There is one obstacle to this love. Ovid, as a young artist, lacks money and she is encharged by a rich man for long. The young and charming Ovid, though, meets her secretly. From poem to poem, the Relationship develops. Very funny scenes are to be found, when the young lovers try to avoid the control of Corinna's sponsor, e.g. as the three of them are invited at the same party, or when Ovid discovers that Corinnas erotic skills have increased and learned things that Ovid for his part has not told her. You simply enjoy the light an witty style of the poems. As to the Art of Love, Ovid uses the genre of Didactic Poetry to write a brilliant parody of Love's euphory and melancholy. The "master of love" as he calls himself, particularly teaches us not to take love that seriously- an occasion to flirting is everywhere, and "at first you shall be convinced that every woman can be conquered." The third book is written for women- I cannot say if the advises given are good- but a girl-friend of mine confesses to hate Ovid because he has discovered so many strategies which should not be made public. Also the Art is worth reading as marvellous literature anyway- one of the most funny books about love! The shorter Cures of Love and Facial Treatment for Ladies are only short Appendices, but also nice to read. With all these works Ovid proves to be a master of the art of love as well as of poetry.

Fills in the blanks; decent review.
Nice update on diabetes, especially compared to older books on the market. I was recently diagnosed as Type 2 and this was part of a voracious education campaign. Author presents a nine point process to take charge. It worked for me, but then diet and exercise are the core of any successful diabetes management program. Main point in this book is the addition of HCA/chromium as a dietary supplement. Does it work? Don't know for sure, but my glucose went from 250 to 125 in two weeks, although I'm still on Glucophage. His case studies are positive. Main thing I got out of the book was: "The cure is better than the disease."

Great Doctor, Great Book!
As a long-time patient of Dr. Vern Cherewatenko, I can honestly say that the nine steps that he lists in this book are right on the money. I am at risk for Type II diabetes due to family history. Dr. Vern, his associate Dr. MacDonald, and I have been working to ensure that I do not end up with diabetes. The HCA mentioned is something that I highly recommend for anyone, diabetic or not. It has been instrumental in my 15 pound weight loss (in 12 months). Keep up the good work, Dr. Vern.

The most proactive diabetes book
I am a person with Type II diabetes that had been able to treate the disease with diet. My blood sugars were starting to get out of the acceptable range when I got this book. I followed the recomendations listed in the book and my blood sugars are all back to normal now. I have also lost weight with the system. All I can say is that it works for me. I have never felt better in years. This may be the best book for people with Yype II diabetes.

By age 50, half of all men have some noticeable signs of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)--enlargement of the prostate--which eventually affects nearly all men as they age. The major symptom, increased frequency of urination, may range from annoying to agonizing. The Prostate Cure describes BPH, its causes, symptoms, and treatments, in a lucid, compassionate, accessible style. Each chapter begins with a list of questions that the chapter answers, making it easy to find information.

Although BPH may be inevitable, the symptoms are not, say the authors, because of the variety of treatment options available. The book describes watchful waiting (periodic examinations for mild symptoms), various surgical interventions (when the urethral obstruction and discomfort are severe and other treatments don't work), and several prescription and herbal medications: how they work, their effectiveness, concerns, side effects, and research findings. This all leads up to the medication the authors prefer: Cernitin, an extract of flower pollen that reduces engorgement of the prostate tissues, improves urine flow, and inhibits prostate growth. Widely researched and used abroad, Cernitin has been virtually unknown in the United States. The book presents a seven-step program for treating BPH, which incorporates using Cernitin and making healthy lifestyle changes--changes which include a diet that promotes prostate health. --Joan Price

well written book with alot of answers
This book is really great if you have alot of questions and do not have the answers. I also think it is a great book for women to read so they can understand a little more on what is going on with the men in there life. After you read this book you also need to check into reading the book the Prostate answer book it is also a great book with alot of great information. Read both of these books for a great way to treat your prostate problems

The Prostate Cure
I have been suffering from cronic prostatites since I was 40 years old (I'm 54 now). I had tried many Doctor prescribed treatments but the symptoms continued to reoccur. I then heard about saw palmetto and started taking it 4 years ago, which helped greatly for the first 3 years. Then I noticed it was not helping as much and searched for help. I bought the Prostate Cure from Amazon and read it thoroughly. It was very reassuring to know that there may be help. I performed a search on the internet for Cernitin and purchased a bottle immediately.
I have been taking it for a year and it has been a very successful treatment for my prostate. I still continue to take a mens health vitamin with 160mg saw palmetto and other vitamins and minerals. The title is misleading in that it is not really a cure, if I stop taking the cernitin the symptoms return. However with continued treatment I have become a new man.

I've noticed a definite difference
After reading the book I started taking Cernilton because I was beginning to have problems related to my prostate (58 year old male). If I remember correctly, I started to notice a difference within 2 weeks. My PSA test a few months ago was 1.5 & my previously slightly enlarged prostate had reduced in size. I'm very glad that I read this book because the products I had been taking for the prostate had limited or no noticeable effects.

Total BS
I have a friend who has been on this diet for 3 weeks and it's not doing a thing for her. She's read to me from the book and I can't believe the hoops these guys have people jumping thru. I think they're a couple of quacks.

Rigorous scientific validity
As an ank spon sufferer, low starch diets are a tremendous help

Most important part of the rheumatoid arthritis cure
Before the great work of Dr. Alan Ebringer at Kings College, London, this fellow--Dr. Giraud Campbell--found the cure using sound scientific methodology. The answers are now clear, and especially for Ankylosing Spondylitis. Breads and starches must be eliminated for the types of bacterial growth they promote within the digestive system. His diet almost totally eliminates starches although he did not know exactly why it worked--in the late '60s.

I have recommended this book to many, and was saddened that it is out of print now, for the information is still urgently needed by sufferers with the honest desire to become EX-sufferers.

Worthwhile and perhaps more
This is the requisite "book biz" follow-up to their earlier book, The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Heal, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (1997), which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one. My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle. Written by three different laureled academics and obviously put together by committee, the earlier book was a big time best seller and occasioned this sequel. Most of the diet advice was like something I had read twenty years ago. The exercise program ditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference. In fact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use of these supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis. People bought the book in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also bought the book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine and chondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplements without the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or is it just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? I was a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, and we all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of a scoundrel."

So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairly close to their overall program. Two years have passed and although I cannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.

In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.

I have to say that I think they've done a positive service in writing these two books. The information about healing in general and about prevention and about the positive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors may have made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they ripped anybody off, on the contrary. I am happy to be positive even though I still think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program can do, although I only have my own experience to go on. Their reports of the double blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way from convincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cure osteoarthritis.

Young and old will benefit.
My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn't
always been willing to try alternative treatments. As her pain
progressed we convinced her to try the glucosamine and condroitan
blends. She is seeing substantial improvements! Our daughter is taking
it as a way to heal her back injuries due to an accident. She no
longer needs those heavy duty pain killers. Buy both of Theodosakis'
books and see for yourself....Treat arthritis naturally and see how
much better you feel without those pain killers that make your mind
fuzzy.

Thank you for another remarkable book!
I'm not sure which book I enjoyed more; The Arthritis Cure or it's follow-up, Maximizing the Arthritis Cure. Either way, Dr. Theodosakis has done it again with an inspirational and helpful book. As a nurse, I recommended his latest book to my father who suffers from osteoarthritis in his knees. He has experienced exceptional relief from taking the glucosamine and chondroitin and following the other steps of the plan. He has been able to almost stop taking ibuprofen other than when he has a bad flare up. Now he is able to garden more comfortably and with better biomechanics and he is walking the dog on a regular basis again---the dog is grateful to the good doctor as well! I'm glad that more people in the medical community are coming around to recognize the power of these supplements.

Informative
From this book I learned all about how the immune system workswhich was great, I have CFS. I have to say that her recommendationsfor being a vegetarian are not good -- that's a good part of how I gotCFS...

For some fast immune improvement, do Hulda Clark's liverflush in "The Cure For All Diseases" until your liver isclean. You should notice an improvement in your metabolism and skintone right away or after the first few flushes. The ingredients costless than $6 and you do it yourself at home over 24 hours! Piece ofcake and lots of bang for your buck.

To really rock your world andaccelerate healing, read "We Want To Live" by AajonusVonderplanitz. This book is revolutionary and phenomenal and makes somuch sense. My energy has absolutely gone through the roof from hissuggestions, and, of course, because I did 12 liver flushes.

The natural route to health
This excellent book covers all the basics of developing and maintaining a healthy immune system. The first part deals with nutrition and the immune system and reveals some exciting botanical discoveries that could have a beneficial effect in the natural boosting of the immune system, with particular reference to plant sterols and sterolins. It also provides a basic understanding of what the immune system consists of and how it works.

Nutritional supplements are discussed next, with detailed information on the important vitamins, minerals, trace elements and the natural hormone DHEA. Phytonutrients are the most recently discovered helpers in the fight against disease and aging, and these are treated in chapter 4. They include flavonoids, carotenoids, phytosterols, sterols and indoles and are plant-derived substances with potent beneficial effects on the body.

Chapter 5 discusses the 30-day plan to optimize one's immunity. It also defines the enemy, i.e. foods to avoid. These include animal fats, hydrogenated plant fats, refined sugar and other refined foodstuffs that have been stripped of all their nutritious ingredients. The benefits of good fats like olive oil, fish oils and flaxseed oil are explained, plus other immune boosting plant substances, yogurt and green tea.

The power of the mind in disease and health is discussed in chapter 6, which includes information on the exciting new field of psycho-neuro-immunology, the use of affirmations, healthy breathing, visualization and simple relaxation techniques.

The following chapters are devoted to specific disease states like cancer, autoimmune illnesses, allergies, HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and chronic fatigue syndrome. In every case, information is provided on how to deal with these via detoxification, nutrition, exercise, visualization and stress relief.

The book concludes with lists of product manufacturers, resources, references and a thorough index. I highly recommend this work to people who wish to harness our natural allies in boosting their immune systems and fighting disease. Further information on the nutrients and phytochemicals discussed in this book can be found in Life Extension Magazine and James F. Balch's very detailed Prescription For Nutritional Healing.

Suffered for over 2 years until reading this book!
Outstanding book if you have an auto immune disease. I have an auto immune disease known as Weber-Christian disease and spent 2 years suffering before finally being diagnosed correctly. Once I had been diagnosed, I was told there was nothing that could be done for me - that it wasn't a life threatening disease and that it would just come and go periodically, so I needed to just learn to live with it. After reading this book and following the advice, I am on the way to being cured and am feeling 100% better. In a couple of months (2), I've gone from having to stay in bed taking pain killers to leading a normal life again, virtually pain free!! I am only 37 years old and was not ready to just lie down and give up. This book has been a life saver for me. I highly recommend it to anyone with an auto immune disorder.

FIRST-CLASS HIDDEN HISTORY
Like many others who have discovered this treasure of a highly readable but profoundly illuminating book. I fully agree with Dr. Susan Love, who called it a "riveting" story and "one of the best books I have read in a long time." As someone who has long been active in the women's health movement I am sure that THE BREAST CANCER WARS will become a fixture on the short list of "must have" titles for any patient or advocate. Dr. Barron Lerner is a gifted writer, a caring clinician(Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons) a distinguished PhD medical historian, as well as the devoted son of a breast cancer survivor whose "quiet perseverance in the face of a terrifying disease has been an inspiration." Thus, he brings a thoroughly rounded perspective to the history of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment that (to my knowledge) no other male physician has ever attempted, much less achieved. His fascinating descriptions of the central role that activist patients have played in forcing doctors to treat breast cancer more humanely, and, yes, believe it or not- more scientifically, is a major contribution to modern social and science history. Dr. Lerner's title is well-chosen, as he escorts us through the maze of controversies and "wars" that mark breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention, showing them to be dramatic, amazing, frustrating, sometimes ridiculous, and often highly unfair to patients. While THE BREAST CANCER WARS is not a "how to" book it provides women- and men-with a wealth of necessary background and information that will enable them to become far more savvy and sophisticated on every aspect of any breast cancer discussion.

A Very Important Book
In trying to understand and have an appreciation for the larger perspective of Medicine, Doctors and the Medical/Cancer Establishment, I found "Breast Cancer Wars..." to be the most insightful and helpful book of its kind that I have read. And in seeking to understand my disease (Leukemia), and the process I have been going through, I have read dozens of books on Health, Healing, Cancer, Medicine, the Medical Establishment etc...

Dr. Lerner provides a comprehensive, readable and above all balanced book in which he examines all the factors which impact on the development of a cancer treatment in the U.S. And he maintains this sense of balance while examining what is one of the most emotional, sensitive and controversial areas in all of cancer diagnosis and treatment; Breast Cancer and the Radical Mastectomy.

What particularly distinguishes his writing is the way in which he is able to provide a clear, detailed history and narrative while exploring the human, cultural, political, societal and gender-related issues that have impacted on the development and treatment of Breast Cancer.

In this extremely controversial and politicized area, he does not look for, or find a villain; his is not an attempt to blame or demonize. And that is a great relief.

Instead, in discussing the individuals involved - the physicians who first espoused and continued to advocate the use of Radical Mastectomies and those who opposed it, the prominent women who elected this procedure for themselves, the women who began to oppose the Radical Mastectomy and who challenged the medical system, the women who used their influence and resources to initiate important cancer and support organizations - Dr. Lerner provides very human portraits which helped me to appreciate how and why these individuals developed their views, and how each one of them came to effect the course of the debate and the evolution of Breast Cancer treatment.

And he does not fail to convey the tremendous emotional, physical and psychological impact that these doctors, individuals and organizations have had on women coping with Breast Cancer.

I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to understand the context of an illness and treatment and the various forces, from individual to societal, which play a role in the treatment of disease in the U.S.

An important addition to an important subject
...From his book I learned about a number of feminist heroes who brought breast cancer to the spotlight. Nor does Lerner hesitate ot criticize physicians, when appropriate. In sum, the "Breast Cancer Wars" describes a series of troubling controversies with a great deal of even-handedness. Breast cancer patients and others concerned with this fearsome disease will surely benefit from Lerner's insights.

Small Book, Good Info...
I must say that I was a little put off when I first received this book in the mail. It was quite a bit smaller than I had expected, so be prepared. It is more like an oversized booklet than a book.

For such a short "book" though, it really packs a punch. Although some of the info could use updating, it gives quite a bit of modern, useful info on how spiritual attitude, fitness, diet and supplements can play a positive role in treating anxiety and depression. The information is not comprehensive, nor could it possibly be in such a short publication. It does, however, give a lot of good, general info on how to improve your chances of overcoming anxiety and depression, and is a good starting point for more research.

It's a short read, but well worth the time and expense. I like the fact that it covers both the spiritual and physical aspects of treating anxiety and depression. A great concept. My only problem with the book is that it is not longer and more thorough.

Teenagers could use this book too!
Some people don't realize that anxiety and depression is a big deal in the teenage world today. So this book can be really helpful for teenagers too! My mother is reviewing the book again with me. Dr. Colbert delivered me when I was born at Florida Hospital and was my doctor for many years and we have a lot of respect for him. And he is a really pleasant person and always made me laugh when I was in his office

Coast to coast fiasco
Arthur, please leave Florida to the likes of Carl Hiaasen or Elmore Leonard. Your novel failed short in its depiction of our favorite state. The cast of characters wasn't excessively long, but the individual storylines were poorly developed. All the coincidences!: the FBI agent who falls for the car-collector woman who sells her red Jaguar to the parents of the teenage bank robber who "killed" a senator with an asthma attack... The vicious and beautiful killer, her lovely parents, her psychic blind daughter... How forced and convoluted. I prefer simpler novels. This is not it.

Thelma and Louise but still OK
The road, the escaping, and the self-examination all add up to a familiar theme, but one that is executed brilliantly. The book is rich and dense, but not at all off-putting. Recommended.

Change of opinion....
I got the book and finished it in a matter of days. I was very disappointed, however, by this book. I expected something along the lines of Rosenfeld's very good "Diamond Eye." I was wrong. The story lags in so many places, I found myself skipping full paragraphs. Try as I did, I couldn't make myself feel anything at all for Mercury or Umberto. I know I should probably have pitied them, but I could've care less.

The lack of quotations is something that completely threw me. I don't know what Mr. Rosenfeld was trying to accomplish with this tactic. It was distracting and forced me to take my mind out of the story far too many times.

I don't recommend this novel. If you're in a fix for a great road novel, buy "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman, which actually does manage to turn a road trip into a spiritual journey without resorting to cockamamie ghost stories.

Much too preachy
Although I'm not a religious person, I've never sued anyone for displaying a Nativity scene at Christmas. Still, I'd rather not be told that there's only one way to look at the world and that my way is wrong. That's the feeling I got from this book. It's from a Christian publisher and I'm sure there's a good market for such fiction (you can leave it where the kids might find it), but I'll take a pass in the future.

I loved the book "Deadly Cure"
I think it was 3-4 times I was brought to tears reading this book. It touches the heart of Pregnancy loss and the deep pain , a subject that is often swept under the rug (it will disappear if we ignore it). This book was wonderfully written , tactfully while still exposing certain truths. I recommend this book as well as the first one, "Lethal Harvest".

I loved the book "Deadly Cure"
I think it was about 3-4 times I was brought to tears in reading this book. It touches the heart about pregnancy loss and the deep pain. So many people try to sweep it under the rug and look away from this subject,( maybe it will disappear if we ignore it) but this book is wonderfully written, tactfully, while still exposing certain truths. I recommend this book as well as the first one,"Lethal Harvest".
