I have truly enjoyed reading this book. I have some children's books on mythology that I read to my kids, and I found the topic so interesting I wanted a little something for myself. This is a great light reading of mythology for adults (or teens). I have always had a fascination with greek mythology - but when I took a college course in greek mythology - I felt that the professor pretty much killed any interest I had in the topic. Basically he threw us into some difficult text without much background info - and I ended up bored and "un-enlightened". Thankfully I rekindled this interest by reading to my kids. This particular book is just wonderful, especially if you are new to mythology - because the writing is very straight forward and accessible, yet fun and intriguing. Had I just started with this book in college, I probably would have read many more books, and ultimately waded into the more complex writing of the Greek plays. This is just the book to stoke the flames for anybody looking for a first adult book about the greek myths.

This is more of a "Mythology for Children and Beginners" resource. Most of the more obscure Greek myths (and in many cases, the more interesting ones) are left out entirely; of the myths which are included, only one version is presented of each, obscuring the fact that in many cases there were multiple versions of each myth, each version interesting and useful in its own right. I would recommend for the enthusiast Edith Hamilton's carefully researched "Mythology" - there is far more Greek material presented in that book than in this and in a more engaging format.

Thank God my man is not this stupid and dim witted - and if yours is you should search for a better one.

This book insists that all men are complete morons and unable to deal with more than one emotion or one concern at one time - and you better hope that they never have to deal with emotions and problems in the same moment or their heads might explode.

Also ensure they aren't hungry, tired, or stressed if you wish to have a meaningful conversation with them - they don't function under these conditions!

"Join the real world and stop copping out" was my response to this book - totally useless, and not even that funny...

Fun but true

All about relationships

A collection of short stories about teenagers trying to figure out how love works. There were a few characters that I'd be tempted to beat with my shoe if I ever met them on the street, but overall, the voices were realistic and this will appeal to teens, especially girls. Several of the stories made me laugh and others left me feeling depressed. My favorite story was "A Letter to My Daughter," a letter from an absent father to the daughter he's never met.

This collection of short stories addresses issues teenagers face in a very real way. I looked over the Table of Contents before I began to read and wondered which story I'd like the most. After reading "Jacobs' Rules", which teaches a very important lesson about relationships, I thought I found it. But "A Letter to My Daughter" turned out to be my favorite. It took a lot of courage for Alicia's absentee father to write this letter; teaching her about boys, and, more importantly, admitting he fell short when he was with her mother. Any girl who receives a letter like this from her dad, absentee or not, has a dad who truly loves her, and she should certainly heed his advice.
The author did a good job with these stories; some sad, and others thought-provoking or entertaining. Whether male or female, teens should read this book.

Who am I without him?
i just finished reading who am I without him? Basically this novle is a whole buch of short stories of girls and their relationships with boys. The main problem that is taken place through out the whole book is girls who never had a boyfriend, or ither girls who do everything they are told by them. Then these girls end up getting hurt. Thes stories take place all around the world. This happens in everyday life, so it is not just in one place. Mainly these girls are not ready for what they are getting themselves into. Their relationships go ither good, bad, funny and heartbreaking. something you might want to ask yourselfe is who am I really without him? You need to make sure being in a relationship is what you really want. Give it some time and really think hard.

We read this one a month ago. The title led us to believe this book was about teens relationship with God, which would've been a good subject to read about. But this was not about God. It was ten stories about teen relationships. We pretty much enjoyed reading them all. Our favorite was A Letter to My Daughter. We enjoyed this one the most because a father was writing to his daughter explaining to her what boys were all about and what their intentions were when dating or having a girlfriend. It's always good to hear it from a male perspective. This way, girls will have the inside scoop and know exactly what to lookout for.

On the negative side, we wished that some of the characters were of other ethnic groups instead of mostly urban African American. The story, "I Like White Boys" was good. We wanted to read more racially integrated stories. Sometimes it's difficult to read slang. We try to read books that doesn't have a lot of slang because it's not the standard in this society. We recognize that urban communities have citizens that uses slang and improper English, but we're trying to change all that by incorporating ourselves into this American society by speaking proper or standard English. It's not that we disapprove of urban books. No, not at all because we love the BLUFORD SERIES! It's just that we want to be able to articulate a sentence when we go on job interviews.

All in all, it was an okay read and we would recommend it to other teens.

Despite translating thousands of worthless Latin quotations, the editor of this edition leaves large passages from the section on Love Melancholy, which Burton waggishly wrote in Latin, untranslated. Burton demands enough of one's patience; one shouldn't have to put up with this sort of nonsense from his editor, even if one's Latin is good. After plodding through over a thousand pages, the reader has earned a little titillating trivia. Also, if you've forgotten your Latin, Burton's notes are left untranslated. Finally, I'll say that although Burton is amusing, the book is too long with too little content. Go back to his sources, read Swift, read Marcus Aurelius, read Kierkegaard on religious despair; and then, if you have time, read Burton-- or skim him.

Take Small Bites!

Review Date: 2008-06-16
There are many reviews of Burton's "Anatomy" ranging from the 'best book ever written' downwards. I have been involved with many editions of this work over the years, and have a couple of things to add to what's been so eloquently said. First, it's a reference book and not a novel, and therefore shouldn't be read in a continuous way. It becomes tedious and incomprehensible. Like grandma used to say: "Take small bites so you don't choke!" There are parts of it that are dated but much that is totally applicable today. Second, it is a book about society, and the hypocrisy of the way different people get treated:"A sheep-stealer is hanged for stealing necessary victuals but a great man in office may safely rob, pillage, and destroy, and be honored for good service, and no man had best find fault with him." This prefigures much of Enlightenment thinking and can be seen to relate to Culturalist Analytic thinking, like the works of Karen Horney. Third, it is a historical contemporary look at the Jacobean age, and even the Elizabethan world. If you're interested in the cultural climate of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, here is an overview of what was known and opined by a scholar. One wonders how melancholic he really was (in the modern sense) since the preparation and writing of such a compendium certainly requires motivation and energy, not generally associated with chronic depression. I would suggest the Preface and the Digression of Air as fascinating views of knowledge in the early 17th century. Even if you don't like it (which I didn't for about 5 years), it tends to grow on you as long as you go slow!

Where to begin discussing this book? How about again and again? For it begs never to be put down, and if finished (as if that's even possible) to be picked up again and pored over. Again. And again. And again . . .

It got Samuel Jonson out of bed earlier than he wished. It kept me up later than I wished, and still "reading" it in my mind over and over again, musing on the insanity of it - the brilliant, always entertaining, enlightening, LIGHTING bolts of language and thought crammed so mercilessly between two covers. It won't drive you mad, though, or mess with your humours, unless, of course, a sense of one you don't have - a bricolage (I think) to be devoured ravenously and chewed interminably like an everlasting gobstopper - a joy to exhaust your mind and body by . . .

We received 'Biscuit' as part of the I Can Read 50th Anniversary Box Set (I Can Read Book 1). Within the "I Can Read" series, Biscuit is rated at the very first level of proficiency, or 'Shared Reading', which happens to be exactly where my little girl is at this time.

The book features large typefaces, absolutely lovely illustrations and a relatively small vocabulary, suitable for the 4-5 yr. old children to whom it is targeted.

My little girl liked the story line - the interaction between a little girl and her puppy as the puppy is getting ready for bed. She enjoyed the reading experience so much, she made me promise that we are going to read it again tomorrow.

The simple words, give her confidence and encourage her to apply the 'sounding' skills she develops at the kindergarten.

Learning progresses as each page tends to introduce one new word while previously read words repeat.

Following our 'Biscuit' experience, we decided to order the Biscuit Storybook Collection (Biscuit) which has 10 Biscuit adventures. Biscuit gets 5 stars without any reservations. Many thanks to both the author, Alisa Satin Capucilli and Pat Schories, the talented illustrator for making my girl happy and motivated to practice her reading.

One note of caution: I was able to verify and I am testifying that Biscuit is a perfect book for a little girl. I am not sure if a little boy learning to read would be equally interested in the story line or impressed by it - basically what it takes to putting the little puppy to bed. It is possible that subsequent Biscuit adventure are more dynamic but I would not know it until I actually receive the 10-story collection.

I know that "Biscuit" is one of those books that looks utterly mind-numbing, but that little dog has managed himself a respectable-sized series with adventures perfect for all those little readers. This little precious guy has to be the cutest dog to ever appear in kiddie literature. He's a playful, spunky, but rather needy boy who needs the attention of his young mistress. Little girls especially will love this sweet little book.

Cute illustrations show Biscuit's young owner taking care of him as she tries to put him to bed. The text is simple and beginning readers will pick up the simple words easily, with the illustrations a big help when cues are needed.

A super bedtime book, especially for kids who have something in common with Biscuit - they want a drink, a snack, a hug, one more kiss... will they NEVER go to sleep?!? Of course they will, because just like Biscuit, sooner or later, they're just plain tired!

Its a good book because the words in it are big and easy to read, and because it teaches responsibility because it shows the girl in the story feeding him and taking care of him.

Two romances - one joyful and one tragic

"A Winter's Tale" is two romances in a single play. The tragic but open romance of Leontes and Hermione, and the ultimately joyful but initially clandestine romance of Florizel and Perdita. The tale spans more than a decade and can serve as a cautionary tale about mistrust and jealousy.

My favorite character was Autolycos. Rogue, thief, impersonator of nobility, but the linkage that pulled some of the threads together in the end.

This one feels long, even by Shakespearian standards. On the other hand it was easier to follow than other Shakespeare plays. A great story with the capacity to present well on stage or screen. I'm just sorry folks don't hear about this one more.

I'm from England and I'm studying this play for A level (as a mature student - normally taken when aged 17) but although the UK is the home of 'The Bard' this item is not available in the UK! I'm very impressed with Amazon.com who delivered it quickly and cheaply!

The CD itself is great. It really helps to hear the play, as the intonation is correct, which is sometimes difficult to do when reading it yourself.

The actors' voices are clear and suit their parts perfectly. I'd definitely recommend it - and I will look out for more titles in this series when I've finished studying this one!

Although this play is not one of Shakespeare's better known plays, it is one of his very best. It is a tragicomedy suffused by gentle melancholy. Unreasonable and cruel jealousy are also portrayed. We also have two endearing young lovers to liven up the story. These characters are very well-drawn, and the story is quite beautiful.

I have always favoured the Oxford Shakespeare series over others (Folger, etc), and the Winter's Tale is no exception. It's translation notes and lexigraphical assistance makes reading a joy and brings out the true heart and soul of one of Shakespeare's commonly overlooked tragi-comedies.

About par for Shakespeare.

As usual in Shakespearean plays, the language here is very prettily written. As usual in Shakespearean comedies, there are plot holes that one could easily drive a tank squadron through. But since this is not just a comedy, but a tragicomedy, in which the first part is a tragedy and the second a comedy, not everything comes out well in the end: some worthy characters die. Also, as is usual for Shakespeare, we have a morality play on the evils of jealousy and closed-mindedness. Really, though, other than the pretty Shakespearean turns of phrase, there isn't much to recommend this book.

I love this little tale of escapism! How often does a woman discovers both herself and her true love, ibidem (Latin: in the same place) ? At Middle age, almost 30, Lady Dona St Columb is in crisis and "becomes a boy" off the Cornwall English shore and lives, loves, and pillages ID, EGO, SUPEREGO only to discover life and it's sacrifices can be as or more adventuresome as the Frenchman's. This romantic sojourn is reflective of DuMaurier's struggle as she patiently waits for her husband during his Military Service years. Ladies and Gents, haven't we ALL answered this Freudian question when we discover our own crossroads between the Sparkled Bells and Whistle's love and the comfortable, enduring love of the friend that we vowed to spend our lives with? Dona choosing Harry, her son and dogs, is not sad or unendurable, because she knows who Dona is now. And, the handsome scoundrel, Jean is the better for having loved her.
THE FRENCHMAN'S CREEK, set in 17th-century Cornwall, England, is an absorbing tale. Passionate, bored Lady St. Columb flees her lover and her fashionable life at Court to the peace of her husband's Cornwall estate. Quite unexpectedly, she stumbles on the mooring place of the white-sailed ship belonging to the daring Frenchman who plunders the shores of Cornwall. This Frenchman is dangerous, wanted, charming, urbane, and handsome. He is also her doppelganger daring her, Dona, to discover herself and in loving Jean, she'll love the true Dona St Columb. It is only a question of time before this philosopher-pirate captures the heart of the lovely Lady St. Columb. Satisfying, and romantic from cover to cover.
As in REBECCA and JAMAICA INN, DuMaurier introduces to the reader her most beloved character: the beautiful landscape of Cornwall in the first chapter. Other reviewers have said to skip it or read after finishing the book, but the chapter is as important as DuMaurier's "Last time I saw Manderley..." While this leading lady may not be perceived as 'dark' as the ladies in REBECCA or JAMAICA INN, the fact that Lady St Columb is a bored adulteress who becomes 'boy' on a scoundrel's ship is. Such scandalous behavior, especially set in 17th Century England had never been portrayed as DuMaurier has.
To me, FRENCHMAN'S CREEK reads as wonderful swashbuckling movie starring Errol Flynn and Loretta Young. How can a girl resist a hansome scoundral who still has some honor about him and understand's emotional and intellectual intimacy is everything to a woman?

Having read most of Ms. DuMaurier's books, this is my favorite because I can identify with her reckless, unfulfilled heroine. Set on her beloved Cornwall coast, it is the tale of the beautiful Lady Dona St. Columb who impetiously married Lord Harry for all the wrong reasons and has regretted it ever since. Increasingly disatisfied, lately she has been acting out in very antisocial ways with Harry's dissolute best friend. Disgusted by her actions and nearing her 30th birthday (old for back then), she flees London with her children for the solitude of their unused country home.

Soon after her arrival, Dona discovers that William, her mysterious new butler, has a secret visitor in the evenings. Curious, Dona spies on him and discovers that the mysterious visitor is William's real master, the Breton pirate Jean Baptiste Aubrey, who is holed up in a hidden estuary on her property while he repairs his magical ship.

Dona meets and soon falls in with the thieving but insightful Frenchman. Aubrey is her doppleganger and so he completely understands her. With him she finally achieves love and meaning in her life which fills the aching void inside her. Most of the story is pure escapism-eating roasted chicken never has seemed more sensual than when consumed by Dona clad only a purloined shawl and ruby earings in a pirate's sunlite cabin. I love it when the Frenchman leans down on his bed and slowly begins unscrewing the earring in her left ear as forfit for a wager she has lost.

Alas, eventually our spoiled heroine is forced quit playing and make a life altering choice-flee with the sexy pirate to Brittany or stay and become a mature wife and mother? Sadly, most women know what the right answer is for a mother of young children. This is a charmingly written historical romance that can give hope to an unhappily married woman and is a great read for a happily wed one on a hot midsummer's afternoon.

I enjoyed this a great deal because it was not the typical historical romantic novel. Although this took place in the 17th century I believe that some in the modern world could relate to Lady St. Columb. It is as though she is having mid-life crises even though she is only near thirty. She has fallen out of love with her husband and is bored with her life in London. She decides that she needs time away from both her husband and London society, so she gathers her children and heads to the family estate in Cornwall. There she finds the peace and quite she has been longing for as well as an adventurous pirate. She and the pirate are instantly attracted to each other. He is everything that she longs for in her life offering her friendship, reckless adventure, fantasy and is without responsibilities. She is torn with having to making decisions with which she will have to live for ever.

The story was wonderfully written. I found it hard to feel sorry for Dona because her character is very selfish, thinking only of herself. I felt a bit of compassion for her husband; he was completely clueless to the things that went on around him. The attraction between Dona and The Frenchman was largely based on mental attraction and the love for adventure, which helped ease the disappointment that it lacked lust. It leaves you wondering about physical and truly emotional attraction between Dona and the Frenchman, especially if you are accustomed to reading romance novels. The fact that it deals with adultery makes for an emotional read. I found myself feeling tugged in different directions, wanting her to be with pirate and keeping her family together. It is some what sad that she feels trapped and unhappy with her life. I would only recommend this novel to someone who enjoyed adventure with a bit of romance, but if you are a true lover of romance this book may leave you a little disappointed.

I was quickly transported back to WW2 in the london blitz.

I remember being in grade school and having the librarian read parts of books to get us interested in them. I remember when she stopped I was dying to find out the rest of the story.

I finally found it and read it. Worth the search!

The book The Machine Gunners is not a bad book at all I just thought that it was too hard to follow at times. I also did not like how The Machine Gunners had so many characters. The Machine Gunners does have a good story line which makes up for it's flaws. I find some characters funny which helps me threw some of the dull parts. All and all I think this book will get mixed opinions, but it still would not hurt to read it.

The Best Children's Book Ever Written

The Machine Gunners has to be the best children's book ever written. The moment you turn the first page you step into Chas McGill's magical world. It's the first year of the Second World War and the people of Garmouth expect an invasion by the Germans to happen any minute. Yet the children of Garmouth fight over who has the best war souvenirs collection. Chas McGill discovers the best find ever...a Browning machine gun still attached to a German Bomber. McGill and his friends now have a fortress and a gun capable of smashing though a brick wall over a mile away. How will it all end?

The Machine Gunners captures everything there is about childhood adventures. The ones we remember and the ones we wished we'd had. Everybody will be able to take something away from this book. And once you have read one Robert Westall book you will go on to read them all. The guy was a genius who understood children like he was still one himself. Hats off to a fantastic writer!

An Excellent Book

The Machine Gunners is one of the best books I've read recently, combinding an intriguing subject matter and a suspenseful, fast-paced plotline into a great read. I highly recommend it for anyone around the ages of ten to fifteen, though of course this is only a rough guide.

This book takes place in a town in Great Britain during World War II. Chas McGill, the main character, has been striving to become the person with the best war souvenier collection in town ever since Boddser Brown bested him with the nose cone from a bomber. He gets his chance when a German Heinkel crashes on the laundary, leaving parts scattered in plain view--and the prize pig of all war souveniers, a functional machine gun, hidden in the cockpit in the hand of the dead gunner. Chas and his friends remove the machine gun, and it becomes a much-pursued secret.

After Chas's humiliation at school for fighting "dishonorably" with his rival Boddser Brown, he bands together with the most unlikely of people: Audrey, Carrot-Juice, Nicky, Cem (short for Cemetary, after his father's profession), and Clogger, who all become friends in order to guard the machine gun and build the underground Fortress which becomes their base and, in a way, a bit of a clubhouse for their soldier games.

After firing the machine gun at a Messerschmitt, which ends up crashing into the harbor, the children discover that they're not able to fire the gun again for some unknown reason. Disheartened, they are all gathered in the Fortress one night when Sergeant Rudi Gerlath of the Luftwaffe--the pilot of the shot-down fighter--stumbles into their hideaway. Reacting quickly, they manage to take him prisoner, much to his later disgust (later because he falls asleep soon after he is discovered). Over the course of the next few days, a rough alliance is established between the children of the Fortress and Rudi, and a deal is put forth: if Rudi is able to repair the machine gun, they will give him a boat in order to escape when the German fleet is nearby.

When rumors that this has occured and the Germans are invading spreads, Rudi fixes the machine gun and is given his chance to escape. But is it really the Germans who are invading at last? Or will the children take place in a mistake that can turn tragic if the machine gun is fired? To find out, I suggest you read the book: you'll be greatly rewarded.

I would recommend this book to any new parents. Its got all the key dates that you want to keep a record of. Its got the right balance between a keepsake book for you - and a lovely book in itself with the anne getties images. No complaints here.

Exactly what I wanted

I had an Anne Geddes baby book with my first child and loved it. Couldn't find one for my second and settled on a run of the mill baby book from a card store...wasn't thrilled. Found this book at Amazon for my third baby and I am thrilled to get to use it in two months when our baby is due. The pages have exactly the type of information you would want in a baby book, plenty of room for pictures, and great Anne Geddes photos, too.

So cute and so perfect

I have one of these books for each of my children and recently purchased another as a gift for a friend having her first. The photographs are beautiful and I love that this book covers the first 5 years of the child's life. I enjoy books that provide places for specific memories or milestones as well as places to fill in other info and this book has both. I think it's a lovely piece to pass on to your child.

Almost perfect!

I give it 4 stars only because I think once you begin to add photos and mememtos, the book will probably not close. I would have preferred it be spiral bound or more loosely bound to allow for the things we parents like to cram in there!

I think this is a lovely book and I am very happy with it. I hope that when my daughter is grown, she will enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed completing it. I will definately recommend this to others and purchase more as we have more children.
