It's just an average day at school with George Beard and Harold Hutchins, but a teacher giving super powered wedgies isn't normal for the other kids. She's mean, evil, vile, and wants to take over the world; she's Wedgie Woman! But, who will stop her?

In the fifth epic novel of Captain Underpants by: Dav Pilkey, George and Harold try to hypnotize their mean teacher... and it works. They tell Ms. Ribbles to be nice, kind and not to turn into the evil Wedgie Woman who wants to take over the world. Later, on in the news, they hear that if a woman is hypnotized they will do the opposite of what they are told to do. Now George and Harold are very worried when they find out that the news is true and that Wedgie Woman is here to take over the world!

It's wedgie time since Wedgie Woman's hair gets soaked with super powered juices and now even her hideous hair can give wedgies. Everyone (except for Wedgie Woman) is mad because they all get a wedgie, but don't worry Captain Underpants is here! Maybe he'll save our underwear, or he might get an atomic wedgie, but to find out the climax of Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman by: Dav Pilkey you must read the action-packed book that is full of laughs and violence

I threw up more times than there are pages in the 5th Harry Potter book

Nobody puts out a better dictionary than Merriam-Webster. The Collegiate is my pick because one of my hobbies is the Over-50 Spelling Bee, and this dictionary is the reference source for that competition. The Elementary edition is what I use in my classroom. The Unabridged is what I subscribe to on the Web. I wouldn't buy any other company's dictionary because this book and its publisher can trace their roots back to the original Noah Webster who first recognized the uniqueness of American English.

Beautiful Story of Forgiveness and love

This book is one of my all time favorite stories! It is about a little girl who goes to stay with her "mean" grandfather high in the Swiss mountains. She thrives in the mountain air and shares a special love with her grandfather. She is later taken away to live in Frankfurt with a wealthy family as a companian for a sick little girl, but being away from her grandfather and mountain air makes Heidi so homesick she actually becomes physically ill. She finally is able to return to her mountain and is part of a miracle that takes place there. This is such an enjoyable book to read and is a beautiful picture of love and forgiveness. I have read it several times and each time it gets better.

When I was a child, I was struck in the eye with a rock thrown by my brother. I was injured to a point that I was bedridden for 6 weeks, and had to take one inch steps in order to heal my eye. I was also confined to a dark room. My mother would read "Heidi" to me as I lie in misery. The doctor said that I had to lie still. He did not want me to injure my eye even more than I had.

Heidi is a book that changed my life. It gave me hope as I lie in darkness. It made me taste goats milk even though to this day I never have. I hope to take this book and read it to my 84 year old mother soon so that I may turn the tables. This book is amazing. Buy it. Read it. Share it with your loved ones. I cannot emphasize enough that this story is magic. God Bless all who read this. Jen

This book is marvelous for both adults and children! Very well illustrated, so you can read the book to the tiniest of children and use the pictures to help them along until they're old enough to understand and read the words in the book. Can start children on this book as a picture book and work their way up to reading it. I read it as an adult and found it very enjoyable. You won't regret buying this book!

I have a semi-intense love-hate relationship with Philip Pullman (and perhaps also with hyphens, but that's another matter). I used to like Pullman unconditionally, reading anything he had written. Then I read "The Shadow in the North" (the second installment in the Sally Lockheart trilogy) and was burned by the ending. It literally hurt. Philip Pullman made me cry. But I was willing to let it slide because I was also in the midst of His Dark Materials and felt compelled to finish--my mistake. "The Amber Spyglass" also left me severely burned, and crying again.

Before all of that happened, Pullman wrote some shorter, happier works. I can't recapture my early excitement about Pullman, especially after reading about his "Frederick must die" rule, but I can almost appreciate his works without remembering the grief he caused me.

"Clockwork" is a novella length story Pullman published in 1996. At 107 pages, the narrative is too short to include any deaths of beloved characters or annoyingly impossible loves. Pettiness aside, I have to say that's a relief.

The story is set in a German town once upon a time when time still ran according to clockwork timepieces--none of that electronic nonsense. Karl, the clockmaker's apprentice, is sulking in the local pub while his friend Fritz prepares to tell the town his newest story.

Things begin to go wrong when a mysterious visitor arrives at the pub after Fritz has wound up his story but before he has a chance to wind it down again. That's well and good for readers but not so good for the characters, especially Karl and Gretl, the daughter of the pub's owner.

"Clockwork" is grim only in the way a children's book can be. There is death and gore and talk of devils taking souls, but none of that is conceptualized in a way that actually touches readers. It's sort of like they way I was able to watch "The Nightmare Before Christmas" as a girl without being creeped out even though I don't understand how that is possible when I watch it now.

The narrative reads very much like a story. Not like a book, but like an actual story told in the oral tradition. This technique is not often used outside of the realm of fairy tales, but Pullman works the style aptly. It works especially well with the edition I read which includes black and white illustrations by Leonid Gore. The illustrations kind of suggest what Edward Gorey would have drawn if he didn't work in such outline oriented ways for anyone who was wondering.

This novella (I can't bring myself to call it a novel) also received tons of accolades in the 1990s when it came out. It was winner of the 1997 Silver Medal Smarties Prize, A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year for 1998, and a NYPL Best Book of the Year also for 1998. I mostly agree with this praise. The story is a little thin on character development, but given its length that's to be expected. Considering it in terms of being a tiny book, the story is really tight and well-put-together.

Wow, I picked this book up and did not put it down until it was finished. This story gets you going in one direction and then takes a very unexpected turn. It reminds me of old fairy tales, but with a modern twist. I loved this book.

I finished this book in an evening. For such a short story, it has many twists and turns. True to its name, the story is tightly wound up from the start, set in motion, and doesn't slow down until the end. Pullman deftly pulls the reader through fear and laughter without missing a beat. Superbly done.

The story seems so simple after the first read, but there's much more to it. It's like a Pinocchio-Faustian-Frankenstein fairy tale. A bizarre combination, yet it works so well. It'll be worth many re-reads, especially for kids as they grow older and can grasp Pullman's deeper meanings.

I can't wait ot read more by this author!

This is my first Philip Pullman book. I went to the library looking for "the Gold Compass but it was checked out so I grabbed this little book by the same author and decided I'd give it a try. It is an admidtedly short, fairy tale revolving around a small group of people living in a German villiage a long time ago. The people's lives revolve around a monster grandfather clock that is filled with lifelike figures. Every time an apprentice is about to graduate to become a master he must carve a figure for this clock. Karl, the apprentice who is one of the main characters, has so failed to produce a figure and now has only a single night to come up with something or be disgraced. How far is this desperate willing to go to achieve his goals? An enigmatic old clockmaker comes to the inn and willing to help him but with magic help of this kind there is always a price.
There is also a writer whose short stories have a bad habbit of turning out to be nonfiction, a little prince who is not what he seems, and a plucky little inkeepers daughter who is the hero and moral center of this story.
Pullman packs a lot of emotion and suspense in this little book. A must read for anyone who enjoys suspense, fantasy, or just enjoys a good fairy tale with a twist. After this I cannot wait to read Pullman's other books.

Just when he gets it all wound up the spring snaps!

This book is very skillfuly writen by Philip Pullman, all the way up until the end. I am eleven and I have just finished reading this book. It is wonderful story but becomes very weak near the end, it gets very mushy and loses he dark theme Philip had built up throuout the story. Clockwork could easily be twice the length it is now. It is as if Philip ran up agianst at deadline near the end and just finished it. The ending exhibits none of the skill prevelent in the rest of the book.

An Italian historical Romance?

Review Date: 2008-11-11
In a lot of ways this novel written in 1958 reads like Jane Austin
for me: the manners are of another time
and the customs are very much Latin.
It there a hidden policy here or just a comment on the changing of times? About the changing of the guard he say:" ... that process of continual refining which in the course of three generations transforms innocent peasants into defenseless gentry." The Leopard is the symbol of the family coat of arms in which we are told that old families transform in a romance of manners to the tune of the times. We get to the end and find it was all supposed to be about the nephew Tancredi, Concetta and the vulgar new princess Angelica. The loss of fortunes on the
whim of a minute or the romance of new times, who can say.
Why was it published in the early newer era of Europe?

This novel is not just a story, not just an exercise in promotion, not just a product for the market--all of which are characteristics of so much of what is published these days. This is literature. It opens windows on the past, it explores human nature, it helps us understand ourselves and the wider world. The reflections on changes in society, on aging and the approach of death, both of a way of life and a specific individual, are enlightening and enriching. A wonderful book.

He went home and the next day he had a whole bunch of garble runners. The garbles where trying to attack them. But the plan failed. The Million Dollar Shot by Dan Gutman is a great book because it leaves you hanging after each chapter. Another reason that this is such a excellent book is that it lets you know about the main people in the beginning of the book. Some more reasons that I love this book is it's extraordinary word choice and the main set up/ picture that it gives out. I would recommend this book to any one who likes suspense.

The book I am reviewing is The Million Dollar Shot, and is written by Dan Gutman. I think this book deserves 4 stars because it's a good book but it's not suitable for younger kids. This book is about Eddie trying to make the million dollar shot, a basket from the foul line because his name was pulled out for the contest. The problem that occurs in this story is that he can't make the shot because he doesn't have his lucky coin. The problem is solved when Annie Stockley finds it for him. Does he win the million dollars? Read to find out! I'd recommend this book to 7-12 year olds because younger kids won't get it and 7-12 year olds like chapter books about kids their own age. I like this book because it has basketball. Other books by this author are Babe and me, Virtually Perfect, and The kid who became President.

The Million Dollar Shot!
The book that i have been reading is " The Million dollar shot". By, Dan Gutman. This book is about A boy who has a chance to win one million dollars by making a foul shot at the NBA finals.
I would recommend this book to people who like to read about sports, or just basketball. This book is probably one of the best books i have read this year. I say this because i like sports and this was a sport book. This book could have been better if there was one or two more suprises. Other that this book was very good.
One of the suprises could be that the boy gets a girlfriend or if some one famous asked to hang out with him or something like that. This was a very good book, that is what the book the Million Dollar Shot was about.

The Million Dollar Shot is a great book of suspence. This book is about a boy who gets a chance to shoot a foul shot for $1,000,000.00 in the first game of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York where he shoots and...will it go in or out you will have to find that on your own. If I had to choose a star rating of 1-10 I would choose a 9/10 stars because there are some parts that he could improve in.

The narrator (unnamed) and Jamie are two boys who enjoy most experiences in life. The taste of wild blackberries picked on a warm summers day is one of those experiences which fill them with joy. Jamie is an extravert who enjoys fooling around and playing jokes on people. Each event for him is filled with larger than life exuberance. The narrator enjoys his best friend's antics, but is more reserved. Together the two boys form a team, though Jamie is the clear leader. Life proceeds fine, but soon fate is to change for Jamie and the reality of sadness will soon enter the boy's world.

This book has a strong theme of grief and coping with the trials of life. The possibility of death is strongly emphasized. The story avoids a morose or mawkish atmosphere, but simply states the facts as they are. This books approaches such heavy subjects with the innocence of a child, but also provides basic information, such as the comfort and consolation that can be gained from the company of a good mother or father. The possibility of religion comforting grief is raised, but only in a slightly dismissive and passing way. This is an unusual book and would enhance any young persons library. It is ideal for children, especially boys, aged 10 to 12 years.

Teens can really get inspired through Myers words. I also think that many teens will be able to relate to the different situations that he went through as well as learn how teens grew up in the 40's and 50's. The best part is learning the culture of Harlem as well as learn a first hand experience about the Harlem Renaissance.

On the back of this book it says that teens will see them selves in Myers. Well they weren't lying when they said that, I saw myself completely in some of the contents of Myers teenage years. For example the reading, through out the book Myers discovered that he had a very good talent in reading and writing. He also was a class clown who always got into trouble, but why doing so he made the people around him laugh. Anyway Myers didn't want to be made fun of(don't we all) about being able to read and write so he hid it from everybody. Their are things that I am good at that I don't want people to know. Myers also told what it was like being a black boy in an integrated Harlem back in the 1930s and '40s. It was hard for him, and one of his friends in the book, whom was white, got invited to a Party, and the host wouldn't let Myers go because he was black. Myers had a hard bringing up, he didn't go to school often because he did bad and didn't want to do good. Look at him now though, he is an award winning author, and wrote other amazing books like Fallen Angles, Somewhere in the Darkness, and Monster. Myers showed us all how he was brought up and the problems he had, and with his writing he showed us who he is now. This powerful book can help a lot of struggling teens

"Bad Boy" the story of Walter Dean Myers life in the streets of Harlem and the challenges he faced from drugs, gangs and the feeling of having no hope to ever succeed. Walter jumps you head first into how the struggle of being a young African American and how you must survive. Walter at a young age was considered very intelligent his only problem that held him back was his speech defect. In which he was teased for and caused him anger in which brought him down the path of violence. Much of Walter's life was something he fought for or strived for, something that really didn't expect with a kid that had so much rage and anger he had such passion for reading and writing. Many times during the book he would talk about how he would lock himself in his room for hours and just read and write poems, stories or just about anything that he could think of. Walter Dean Myers paints a vivid picture of the challenges a young kid in Harlem had to deal with in hopes of finding himself, it is a story that will change the mind of everyone.

Bad Boy
By Walter Dean Myers

Bad Boy .Hoops .Fly jimmy fly, what do all of these great
Books have in common? They were all written by Walter dean Myers a high school dropout!

Bad you are a thrilling book full of suspense and hard ships. IT starts while Walter was just a little boy. Even though his life was hard he somehow mad it through. The hardest part of waters life was probably his home town. Life in Harlem in the 1940s was rough. There was always crime and fights. The neighborhood was dirty and thee houses were rigtty. But Walter somehow made it thought. His main problem while he was growing up was his love for reading and writing. This is a problem because his bad and friends do not approve of his hobbies they begin to make fun of him and he begins to grow a hard outer shell.

He than becomes a bully. Towards the end of the story his anger calms and he starts to not care what people think of him. He then follows and becomes a famous writer. Though his father still doesn't approve his mother tries to keep him inspired. This Book teaches you to follow your dreams no matter what people think about you. They should not a have a say in you're future because only can decide what you do in life

Someone claiming to be researching "what happened to her" as a child came into a forum and started spouting a bunch of nonsense about unrelated things and Jewish Satanism (oxymoron much) that sounded like a bunch of clap-trap conspiriacy theory. She said her story could be found in this book. Someone cries for attention, someone wants to stir up trouble, and someone is trying to sell a book. It's sad that people want attention that badly.

Essential reading for every American

I was speaking with a co-worker who I highly trust one day when he brought up the issue of child molestation amongst high-level government officials. I recalled hearing about the accusations that young male prostitutes were given a late-night tour of the White House when I was in junior high or high school back in the early 90s but couldn't recall what ever happened to that story. Since my friend made me think of that again after this discussion I did some research and came across this book. A few pages in, I was just blown away at the level of detail, credible witness testimony, and disgusting accounts of what has become known as the Franklin Case. In so many ways, this book confirms how much worse things are in government than most people are willing to admit. I am so grateful for the courage John DeCamp has displayed in bringing this book to the public despite high level threats of personal harm he must have endured, along with all those willing to do what is right in standing up for truth and not allowing fear to keep these accounts suppressed.

John W. DeCamp is strongly motivated to pursue justness in this world which he discovers quite hard, or impossible to do. Because for most people it is harder to live with a painful truth than to snug comfortably in the corrupt system that our world leaders have fabricated (I don't mean the USA government alone; I am referring to all humans rich and powerful whatever their background or nationality) he faces a Sisyphus-like task. His story in particular reveals the dirty manipulations of politics, the dirty minds of moneymakers, the desperate courage of some, of whom several have died unexplained deaths. It makes me wonder whether we live in de Golden Age of Immorality. Anyway, the book is highly readable, certainly for those with a strong stomach.

The book was both informative and well documented for very shocking and somewhat disturbing subject matter. There was a great deal of detail to the point of too much but the author's closeness and passion for the case was evident. He left no stone unturned with vivid accounts and interviews of victims and who had first hand knowledge and backed his research.
For conspiracy theory buffs it's a must read. You come away with a new view of our local and national politicians and the lengths to which they will go to achieve and stay in power. Also makes you think of who really controls our country. Are we manipulated for a higher cause or by some super-rich men behind the scenes with diabolical motives? You read the book and decide. If nothing else this book makes you stop, reflect and truly think.

This book is a real eye opener. It's amazing how a story like this has been virtually suppressed in a "Free" country such as ours. I don't want to hear about American Idol or Britney Spears, these are the news stories that should be getting air time. There should be an independant task force set up for the protection of children who are being exploited and brutally abused. Try doing a search, isn't it amazing you really can't find one? Kind of makes you wonder. The fact that there are so many influential politicians involved in this scandal gets you to thinking do we have the fox gaurding the hen house??
