Examining censorship
Arthur and the gang are not-so-patiently waiting for the next installment in the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Book club. They’ve read all the others in the series, like “Curse of the Mummy’s Breath” and “Zombie Substitute Teacher” and can’t wait for the next one to come out.

The day it’s due to arrive at the library, the gang is poised, having all but camped out overnight to be the first in line to check it out and read it. You can imagine their surprise when they find out that it has been banned from the public library! A group of concerned parents have decided that it’s not appropriate for children and to have had it removed! What’s the gang to do? Is there any way Arthur and his friends can get the book back so everyone can enjoy it? A surprise ending is in store for the reader, making this a fun page-turner.

Marc Brown’s Arthur is one of the best-known characters in children’s literature today. He’s seen on television, has large format picture books and also the Arthur Adventure series, of which this title is #2. Intended for intermediate, independent readers who have graduated to short chapter books, the Arthur books are easy to read, a lot of fun, and encourage readers to think about their world and the different issues of friendship, family or in the case of “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club”, censorship....

I have used “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club” in my own classroom many times and found that it’s a great way to stimulate conversation and thinking among my students (one cryptically hinted that maybe we should ban THIS book as well!!). My point in using it as a social studies tool isn’t to agree or disagree with students so much as it is to get them to THINK—- “tell me your feelings about censorship, but back it up with reasoning and research” is how I address the issue. This in turn allows the student not only to voice their own opinion, but to examine their feelings and opinions as well; too many times in our culture we allow other folks to do our thinking for us.

Mr. Brown has done an excellent job of taking a very complicated issue in our society and presenting it to young readers in an understandable and intelligent way. I appreciate and applaud authors who not only aim to entertain their readers, but encourage them to think about themselves and their world. Hats off, Mr. Brown!! You’ve done it again!!

Claudia's Not a Cheat
After having studied really hard for a math test Claudia is thrilled to have gotten an A. However she is accused of cheating. Her friends are behing her and set out to prove that she did not cheat. After all she studied hard and deserved the grade she got. I wasn't very impressed with this book. Most teachers would actually take the time to listen to both sides of the story to find out who cheated instead of jumping to conclusions. A teacher would probably also have them both resit the test immediately. This book is not nearly as good as some of the others.

This is a must-have
I could not wait to have this book.It is one of the best. But it also made me mad.I can't believe that claudia's teacher said those things. He was like,Oh claudia,You are such a bad student. You must have done this. One of my teachers would have been fair and listened to both sides.I liked that In this book Janine was portrayed as a helpful big sister instead of a genius from another planet.

If you are going to read it be sure you have some time!!!!!
This is one of my two favorite BSC Books and I've read almost all of them! I highly suggest you read it!

Could have been better!
The plot and characters are there but this book just lack depth. I was frustrated reading most parts as I felt Talylor could have developed them better. Maybe it is the editing, the sometimes deadpan dialogue and and lack of style. Or the writer is trying to tell too much in such a short story. However I will keep a look out for Taylor's future effort as he does show glimpses of a promising writer in certain scenes of Dinner Club, like the poignant moment shared by the members of Dinner Club when they could not even bring themselves to acknowledge the word "Gay".

GREAT YARN! SUPERB GAY FICTION!
This is a great book by Corey Taylor. I was able to identify with Brandon, and I felt like I knew several of the characters in the book. I was sorry that it was so short. I enjoyed spending time with these people. Very entertaining!

The Most Inspirational Novel This Year!
It doesn't matter what your sexual prefrence is, this book is awe inspiring. It has the Heart so many books lack. The characters came to life, and I felt as though I had known them all my life. So when they were happy, sad, or just having a fun time, so was I. Mr. Taylor's story telling stlye is hypnotic to say the least. I as a writer myself Highly recommend the book to anyone who wants a well written feel good novel. There just isn't enough great things I can say about this book.

Hmmmmmm, not bad I suppose.......
Well that was disapointing! From the blurb and front cover I expected a great story about Mal fighting all odds and outwitting her sexist English teacher, but instead she hardly did ANYTHING! Plus Mallory acted in this gross girlie way all through the book! I am SO glad she leaves the BSC soon after. Pity Dawn couldn't return and take her place! Take my advice, DON'T buy it unless you are a hardened Mallory fan. Best buy a different Mallory book instead!

Nothing's Inpossible!!
i loved the way mallory stood up to her rights and had the nerve to speak about this to mr cobbs, and her BSC friends stood on her side in support if only other girls had this more courage as mallory had she certainly shows of what she's made of.Go,Mallory!!

Excellent book on subtle sexism in schools
Bravo, Mallory! I love how when she realized Mr. Cobb was focusing his attention on the boys and virtually ignoring the girls, she did something about it and her BSC friends stood by her all the way! Yes, women and girls have come a long way, but society needs to go further and eradicate subtle sexism that still permeates our society. The girls from the Fabulous Five series need to take some hints from the BSC. Thanks to the BSC, girls today and tomorrow will have greater opportunities than ever!

This was SO helpful.
This book was great for a recent trip to NY. It is so compact, it fits right in your purse so you don't have to feel like the obvious tourista. The recommended sites were very helpful, but the map was invaluable, we used it constantly as we walked the city. The only thing you'll need to research on your own (the book is a couple of years old), is what's on Broadway and the "in" places to dine.

Really Helpful For First Time Visiters
I found this book really helpful on my recent trip to NYC for a job interview. I had never been to the BIG APPLE and was really anxious and nervous about my trip. I didn't know where to stay, where to eat and how to see as much of the city as I could in a very limited amount of time. And, this book helped me out on all three on those concerns. I found it to be very well thought out, easy to follow and full of wonderful information. The lodging section was exceptional and I was able to find a great place to stay (The Wellington Hotel) that was in my price range and location all because of the helpful "Citypack." I think that any traveler would find it helpful and should really consider investing the money in a great resource book like this. I highly recommend it.

Good Quick Reference
Found this a good quick reference to choose which of the "usual" tourist sites to see in New York. Found it to be very handy - it fit in my purse, and the maps were particularly useful. IT's tips and suggestions on what to see were also useful.

One error hurts a lot.
I bought this book last year and used it as our family toured around the midwest, visiting minor league parks on our way to big league parks. We arrived at a single A game in Iowa one day, an hour before game time, to find the park deserted. After calling the office number listed in the book, we were informed that the game that day had been a day game and we had missed it. It was listed in the book as a night game, but apparently every other thursday is a day game or something goofy like that. When you find a mistake like that, your faith in the accuracy of the rest of the book is pretty damaged. I am not buying it this year, but relying on the Internet for schedule information before I hit the road.

I want to edit my review
how do I edit my review? In case this actually gets posted....please someone tell me how to edit these things once they are posted. Thanks.....and by the way...this book is really good and useful. (Refer to my actual review of this and the 2000 edition.)

EVEN MORE USEFUL THAN A GLOVE AND A BAT!
This book is a very good source of info on ALL of pro baseball. (Please refer to my review of the 2000 edition of this book.) I am mentioned in this book, as I was with the front office of the Ft. Myers Miracle. I would , however, like to point out some errors/ommisions: I should be listed as "Account Executive" and "Radio Producer". Also, in the 2000 edition, Mark Weaver should be listed as "Coordinator of Felony Plagiarism". This book is a good deal at this price, though, so buy it from Amazon.com, while supplies last. If you are a true baseball fan, this is a book that will not disapoint.

I didn't really like it...
I'm putting three stars, even though I didn't really care for this book- I just like the Fabulous Series. One reason I didn't like this book was about how hyper Katie got when the boys started a club without the girls. HELLOOO!!!!??? That is not against the law! It's not the boys are x-cluding the girls, it's just that they want some time to themselves. There is nothing wrong with that. Another reason I didn't like it was because I don't really like Katie. I cannot understand why everyone is so nuts about Christie and Katie and Whitney and Mona!!!! Katie is too sexist for her own good. She thinks it's a crime for boys to open doors for girls. Hasn't she ever heard of good manners?? Mona and Whitney are okay, but they certainly aren't as good of characters as Jana and Melanie, who happen to be my favorites. (well, actually Jana) Christie is okay, she's smart and stands up for herself, but she doesn't seem for exciting and always is feeling sorry for herself. And everyone who writes reviews gets all worked up because Jana and Randy date through practically the whole series. I think that's cool, even though it might not be very realistic. Anyway, I wish Mrs. Haynes would write a new series about the Fab Five in the eighth grade!! The characters she should really develop more are of course the whole Fab Five (especially Jana, I think she has the most depth), Randy Kirwan, Shane Arrington, Alexis Duvall and maybe Mona Vaughn. PLEASE WRITE AGAIN BETSY!! I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!

Not the best in series, but good
I absolutly love all the fabulous five books!! I am so sad they are out of print and I can't find them anywhere! :*( I think this was a good book, except Katie got to hyper when the boys started a club just for themselves. I don't see anything wrong with that, except that the girls all go crazy without any boys around!! That is totally dumb- you do not need boys to have fun.

Katie's not going to let the boys get away with THIS one..
Katie Shannon is FURIOUS when she hears that the boys at Wacko have started a computer club- a BOYS ONLY club! Male-only clubs went out with the caveman, and katie's not about ready to be told she can't do anything. She wants to do something about it, get girls more involved and treated like the first class citizens they are. But none of the other girls care! I mean, she has to pull even the Fab Five's arms to get them interested in starting like, say an all girls club. Then Katie gets some unexpected help from a person of the past- can Katie really make a difference or is she doing all this in vain? This is the best book from Katie's POV. I think it's dumb that she gets so uptight about the guys getting together without the girls, but I also think it's dumb how the lives of the other girls revolve around their crushes and b/fs.

A great book.
Dawn's Book I like this book very much. My favorite part was when Sunny's mother and Dawn's mother were stuck in the elevator. Sunny used Morse code to talk to her mother when her mother was stuck in the elevator. I also like the part when Dawn became a hero because she rescued two kids when there was a fire in the two kids' house. Thank you for sending the book over. I think Dawn had an interesting life too.

This book is good for you if you like Dawn
I liked this book even though Dawn isn't my favorite sitter (Claudia and Stacy and Abby are)I ddin't like the last story where she read the letter that wasn't hers and then got caught. It was dumb of her to just blurt it out all that. But all in all, this book was pretty enjoyable.

Interesting life of a unique character!
Dawn's life is interesting and she is a unique character. One poignant part was when Dawn's parents split up. I can see why Sharon couldn't stay married to Jack. Sometimes I just mentally told Jack to shut up, especially when he ridiculed Sharon in front of their kids, then was lying to her. Another interesting part is that Dawn's maternal grandparents constantly bicker over such stupid things and criticize each other. I think Sharon felt bad about it, especially at the anniversary dinner and tried to keep it from her kids. I kind of saw that cycle being passed on to Jack and Sharon, but Sharon was courageous enough to break out of that marriage. I hope one day Dawn decides to move back to Stoneybrook. Mary Anne and Dawn are lucky to have each other.

don't bother
I ordered this book hoping to have help identifying the birds at the feeders in my back yard. This books wasn't much help. Most of the photos are tiny--all you see is a bird shape sitting in a bunch of bushes or trees. The photo of the cardinal and blue jay are excellent--but who doesn't already know what these birds look like? Also there was too much information on habitat and migration patterns. I suppose that some people would think this was important. All I know is that there are dozens of gray birds feeding my backyard and I still don't know what most of them are called.

I'm going to buy another book, hopefully with larger pictures.

Like An Old Friend
This is the first bird book I ever owned. I purchased it in the summer of 1999. Four years later, it's like an old friend. It starts out with a short introduction and a few pages on the problem of identification. Then it goes on to describe the various bird habitats in North and South Carolina. The largest section of the book, of course, is the species guide. I found it to be particularly helpful with woodpeckers and shore birds, of which there is a wonderful variety here on Hilton Head Island.

I'm still learning about birds, so I have not yet become proficient at differentiating between various warblers, for example, but this book has helped me identify a couple. Last summer, I searched the book front to back for a bird species I encountered in Pickney Island National Wildlife Preserve, and never found it. Turns out that the bird was a Golden Crowned Kinglet. The bird was listed in this book, but for some reason there was no photo. Strictly speaking _Birds of the Carolinas_ isn't the best field guide on the market, but I still use it and have thoroughly enjoyed owning it. I think you'll enjoy it, too, especially if you are a new hobbyist.

An Essential Reference
Birds of the Carolinas is an essential reference for the hobiest. It is particularly useful in identifying transients, and in differentiating between similar species based on habitat and time of year. The book contains excellent photographs of most (but not all) of the species referenced.

A newer approach to Defensive tactics
This text covers grappling techniques with a straight baton with overlaping for the PR-24 and the flashlight. Fourteen chapters with cartoon like illustrations cover this large 318 pg book on non-lethal club grappling techniques.

Blocks, grips, stances, vital points cover the first 3 chapters. The slap and catch method, go behinds with the club, comealongs, takedowns, wrist/elbow/shoulder hold leg and neck locks, chokes, hold downs make up the majority of the text. A section on controlling violent suspects takes up the last three chapters, controlling a suspect from cars or motorcycles on the ground. The last chapter focuses on the use of the hood restraint.

This book combines elements of US military baton techniques, grappling techiques from BJJ and other arts, and compliance techniques from officer defensive tactics. There is slight reference to knife wielding suspects and drugged individuals. Marketed for LEO personnel, some of the techniques are best for those alreaady trained in combatives or grappling martial arts. With this in mind, some DT personnel might not like this book particularly those who hated the Monadnock PR-24 manual. Pistol retention is not covered here as well and must always be kept in mind for any officer buying this book. Weapons based martial artists may find a few techniques to add to their arsenal. I do not agree with all the techniques but in my opinion the takedowns, chokes, and holds are the most practical section of the book.

A UNIQUE APPROACH TO STICK FIGHTING
"Judo" Gene LeBell understands the needs of security personnel and law enforcement officers & has presented some practical skills in the use of the baton, flashlight and side-handle baton. I was especially impressed with the "VITAL" techniques illustrated in the book, featuring some great takedowns, restraints and come-along tactics. Students of stick fighting will want to learn these techniques to expand their knowledge and add a grappling & non-lethal component to the striking aspects of their art. While many of the scenarios appear to be a little too much "jujitsu with a stick," there are nevertheless some terrific gems in this book.

Nothing like it
Gene LeBell's ability with the club, nightstick and pr24 will surprise some people but anyone who has trained with Judo Gene knows that his knowledge of all aspects of combat is the equal of any teacher alive.
