Excellent resource...
BUTTERFLY GARDENING is a collection of interesting essays about butterflies. Chapters cover gardening tips, including an annotated list of plants that attract butterflies, and various other butterfly related topics such as: "What do butterflies see?"; "The struggle to survive"; "The life cycle of the large white butterfly"; and "Moths in the garden at night." If you love butterflies, you will probably enjoy this book but it won't go a long way toward helping you identify the Red Admiral you spotted on the Frikartii Aster yesterday. Another reviewer referred to this as a starter book, but I don't think of it as that at all although it does introduce a number of important topics.

The book includes a few "designs" for butterfly gardens, but they are general, and you would do better to use the garden designs in THE AUDUBON BACKYARD BIRD WATCHER. Let's face it, where the birds are is where their dinner is and dinner for birds is often the larval stage of moths and butterflies. The plant lists in BUTTERFLY GARDENING are adequate. Certainly the best thing to plant is Buddleia..the butterfly bush. This morning I saw three Monarch butterflies on my lavendar flowered Buddleia. The bush also supports a Grandpa Otts morning glory vine which produces flowers that are a dark bluish purple which changes to a purplish magenta. The butterflies were flitting from flower to flower and the color combo was a knockout.

This little book has much to recommend it. From BUTTERFLY GARDENING I learned the value of Parsley for larvae and that no matter how many butterfly boxes one hangs the little critters are visitors not tenants.

best butterfly gardening book!
This book actually takes you past the very basic of plant lists (primarily US native plants) and arranging your garden (although it has all that too). It gets into things like a chapter on what butterflies see, their life cycles, butterfly watching tips, conservation, photography, pictures of caterpillars, etc. The photos are fantastic - not just pictures of butteflies on flowers but really close-up pictures of the wings, and butterflies in flight. They also include information on moths which is neat. This book is above and beyond the best book I've seen on butterfly gardening. For those who want to not only attract butterflies but also know what's going on and understand some of their world, this is a great book. I'd buy it all over again!!

Excellent guide book
I'm an up and coming butterfly gardener. This book had a great deal of information to share not only regarding what species of flowers to plant, but also about the life cycles of the butterfly and the importance of planting your garden for the entire life cycle - from egg, to caterpillar, to butterfly Discussion focused on butterfly/larva predators and how important they are to the cycle. Tips on photography, particularly in the dark were helpful. The pictures of the butterflies and flowers were exquisite! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and the information in it will go a long way in helping me create my dream garden.

Suprisingly accurate
Shecky's provides a soundbite for almost every bar in Manhattan. The reviews are suprisingly accurate but seemed a little too skewd towards SoHo and the Village. Some of the reviews are very, very funny. Even though I am a "bridge and tunnel" guy(a frequent bash), I still got good use of this book. Move over Zagats, here come the Sheckster.

Excellent!
Surprisingly accurate and sometimes painfully frank. This guide is a MUST for anyone interested in going out in New York City.

THE BEST BAR BOOK IN NYC

It's no longer news that animals are being driven to extinction at an astonishing rate, with some scientists now estimating that 1,000 species disappear each year. What is news is that the species are increasingly familiar to us: lions, grizzly bears, gorillas, whales, black terns--and elephants. In the 19th century, writes Douglas Chadwick in this superb journalistic study, Africa boasted more than 10 million of the giant pachyderms; there are fewer than half a million today, a situation mirrored in Asia. The slaughter is largely the result of the illegal ivory trade, conducted through such nations as Japan and Singapore, which ignore international conventions to keep the barbarous supply rolling. Sanctions on those nations are needed, says Chadwick--but so is much more. This sobering book offers an encyclopedic look at the life history of the African and Asian elephants, which, unless something is done now, may not be long for the world.

An amazing read and a sobering view of the fate of nature...
While Douglas H. Chadwick's extraordinary book is titled "The Fate of the Elephant" and does an incredible job of presenting the decidedly bleak future of this magnificent animal in the face of an incredible human-induced onslaught, it does more than just examine that issue. At its heart, this book is about the fate of the "natural world"; that is, the world as it was/is before it has been shaped by human contact. The explosion in the human population is increasingly reducing and destroying the habitat of not just elephants, but other animal species in general, and Chadwick recognizes this. Chadwick's book is thoroughly researched, decidedly well-written, and a joy to read. As stated by another reviewer, as clear as it is that Chadwick's sympathies lie with the elephant itself, he shows remarkable restraint in not condemning those who make the future of the elephant so bleak. As such, the book makes the reader realize that while it is quite easy to sit in our comfortable homes and condemn those who are forcing these elephants into fewer and fewer numbers, there are real problems and concerns on the other side of the coin as well. Without stealing any of the author's thunder, I would just say that this is easily one of the best books I have ever read, and while my sympathies are definitely on the side of the elephants, this book was a sobering and tremendously informative look at the full scope of the problem that elephants and animal species in general face. Furthermore, the best thing this book did, in my opinion, was force me to really think about humankind, its relationship to the other species on the planet, how certain dominant views of that relationship have led us to the where we are today, and what might need to be done in order to prevent large scale extinctions in this upcoming century (which is where I personally fear we might be headed).

Great look at lots of aspects of the elephant crisis!
In a mere 475 pages, Douglas Chadwick's The Fate of the Elephant manages to thoroughly cover a range of subjects almost as large as the elephants that serve as its focus. Originally assigned by National Geographic as a piece on "elephants of the world," each chapter in the book opens in a new setting, from the elephant enclosure at an American zoo, to the parts of Africa and Asia where elephants can still be found in the wild. From the workshop of Japanese ivory artisans to a Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) conference in Switzerland, he also journeys to elephantless areas where their presence is still felt.

Knowing a little about man's history with elephants, I assumed-even daresay expected-that at least some parts of the book would be dedicated to the kind of finger-pointing induction of guilt that has come to be seen as a means to inspire action on the part of the general public. Refreshingly, there is none of that to be found here, yet the final emotions that the reader comes away with are no less strong. Chadwick does not trivialize the fact that, for him, writing The Fate of the Elephant was as much a personal exploration of a subject of lifetime interest as a travel adventure undertaken for the sake of National Geographic. His frankly portrayed moments of sheer joy and of utter frustration become highs and lows for the reader as well.

Along these same lines, Chadwick skillfully avoids simplifying those engaged in the struggle over what should be done with elephants into "good guy" and "bad guy" camps. Though having just seen the body of a faceless and bloody young bull elephant lying in the bush, he does not celebrate when reports of killed poachers come across his radio. Likening poaching to the illegal drug trade, he knows that the crises of a burgeoning population have pushed many of those living on the margins into these high-risk jobs, while those orchestrating it all sit out of the way in relative safety. The ever-growing human population also drives habitat degradation, the other main threat to African wildlife. It comes as a shot of realism when Chadwick points out that these days, even Africans have to go to parks and zoos to see African wildlife.

Describing the World War I bolt-action guns with which many park rangers must ridiculously face off against AK-47-toting poachers, Chadwick highlights one of the great challenges to wildlife conservation: economics. Not only does poaching rob resources from local economies, but even legal industries such as tourism pay few monetary returns at the local level. He advocates the need to make conservation economically viable to local people, not just something imposed by the government of the moment.

Chadwick integrates scientific concepts in a subtle way that guarantees that even those simply looking for a good "animal tale" will come away as more knowledgeable armchair naturalists. Judging from the brevity of his bibliography relative to the amount of material packed into the book, this integrated approach may be the same way that Chadwick picked up much of his technical knowledge of elephants-not by purely poring over scientific texts as much as by living alongside some of the best in the field, in the field.

The only missing element in Chadwick's work seems to be information about the time period in which he was in each place. While perhaps intended as a testament to the timeless quality of life spent in elephants' presence, it seemed most peculiar in a book whose message was a sense of urgency, that time was of the utmost importance.

This book was the absolute best book I have have ever read!!
It has a lot of good information on poaching in North Africa and a lot of other places in the world that elephants were poached at. It really makes you see the world like an elephant as though you were an elephant. it brings out your greatest fantasies about elephants that you would never dream of. This book was just really great.

In 1933 Alister MacKenzie put on paper his considerable golfing knowledge. One of the game's most revered course designers--he conceived Augusta National, site of the Masters, and served the hallowed links of St. Andrews for years as consulting architect--MacKenzie synthesized his thoughts on golf's history, its equipment, its personalities, and his musings on what makes a great course and what makes a great hole, into a manuscript that lay hidden for more than 60 years. Finally available, it stands as one of the most courtly and cultivated treatises ever written on the royal and ancient game. His concepts of the psychology of design are as apt today as when he penned them, and his anecdotal spinnings on his own golfing trials should inspire anyone who's thought of picking up a club.

Legendary Architect on Sundry Golf Issues
Lost manuscript now publlished for all of us to hear the thoughts of such an influential figure in our sport's history. Bob Jones wrote of him in the preface: "all his courses that I have played have been interesting; in every instance he has placed interest and enjoyment ahead of difficulty."

Oh, that more modern designers would learn the lesson! He states that even the most emphatic golfer who says he's not interested in beauty is "subconsciously influenced by his surroundings." Easily the designer of some of golf's most influential hole scenes, this guy gives definite hints, e.g. Playing down fairways bordered by straight lines of trees is not only unartistic but makes tedious and uninteresting golf. Many green committees ruin one's handiwork by planting trees like rows of soldiers along the borders of the fairways."

Love the poem he quotes on the analysis of paralysis: The Centipede was happy quite until a toad in fun said "Pray which leg goes over which?" This put his mind in such a pitch he lay distracted in a ditch considering how to run."

Buy it and read it now
Great read and great sketches. When asked how he got such interesting, hilly, contoured greens, Dr. M once said, "Employ the biggest fool in the village and instruct him to make the greens all flat"

Scary how much of the comments written in the early part of the century apply to today's game and course design. Once section about the controversy of the day re: limiting the flight of the ball is exaclt what we are hearing nearly again 70 years later

Course Architecture and Maintenance
MacKenzie shares his timeless, and oft forgotten, philosophy on how a course should be designed - for the golfer, but not by the golfer; shaped and, when necessary reworked, by the professional architect, not by the whims of a committee; and finally, playable by all who love the game.

Hilarious!
This book is great! It kept me on the edge of my seat laughing. The pranks are unbelievable and hilarious. My favorite part was when Judy (the vet) gave Belle a tranquilizer and she got all whoozy and out of control. Chad came over and saw Belle acting weird and got worried. I totally recommend this book. It's great!

horse mania
Steivie Lake gets grounded once again and Carole and Lisa have to try and get Stevie ungrounded so that she can go to summer camp. Lisa and Carole decide that the best way to get Stevie ungrounded is to scare Chad. But does this method work? This is an exciting adventure and an excellent read. I recommend it to any horse lovers.

WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!
I thought when Stevie did that prank on Chad was funny. I wasn't surprised that Stevie got grounded. I could tell that when Chad and his stinky friend put whipped-cream in Stevie's brand-new boots she was firery mad. And when Carole and Lisa rubbed garden dirt on Belle's coat I thought Chad wouldn't fall for the colic prank! But he did. My favorite part was when Carole and Lisa fed Belle human foods and drinks! I recommend this book to you if you like horses- that's why I gave this book 5 stars.

One of the best wilderness books ever
Wallace is first an explorer, then a writer. He explores the wild places of the Kalamath Mountains, from the "wonder of dreams" of the upper canyons of the Chetco River, to the scrubby peaks of the Siskiyou and fits it all together in a fasinating evolutionary story. I have explored many of these same areas and found this work to best capture that feeling of being in truely wild places. Read it, then go explore!

The Best Study of Evolution I've Read.
Wallace takes on evolution (and the way we were taught about it) the way Annie Dillard lifted the veil over nature in "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek": you are forced to replace the myths with a newer, even more mysterious understanding. Ironically, the theory of Sasquatch is retold as common-sensical, scientific fact. The steelhead trout, in fact, comes across as the greater nystery!

I count this book among my all-time favorites, a sort of heir apparent to "Walden."

A Fascinating Read!!!
Inviting book that made you want to visit the Klamath Mountains and learn about the wild plants of any forest system.

Very absorbing and well written
I had a friend recommend this book to me, she is a friend of Sinclair's. I was truly delighted that she did, as this is a very well written and thought out book, i am definitely going to get her new one. It was most frightening to think that probably some of this happened in the old days and unfortunatly, maybe in our time. Keep up the good work.

Wonderfully entertaining and believable heroine!
Finally a series of exciting adventure mysteries written for intelligent women. Trade Ellis is a character who comes to life--she's a little bit modern and a little bit country; a very nice blend. She's a strong willed and clever detective with a keen sense of humor--really sharp. The mystery that unfolds in The Sporting Club kept me guessing what would happen next. I enjoy a good mystery--this series was written to pleasantly entertain but will also stir you up. I loved it! It was as good as the first book, The Last Song Dogs, and I can't wait until the next one comes out! If you like adventure mysteries and want a believable character you need to read this book.

CAPTIVATING READ, CAN'T PUT IT DOWN
Browning offers readers a door into the captivating world of Trade Ellis, a modern cowgirl who juggles detective work with a rich ranch life. Browning's crisp description sucks you in. Suddenly you're horseback riding amongst Saguaros and sandy brush; laughing at the antics of a playful pot-bellied pig, and meeting Trade's latest client, a romance writer harboring some very gruesome childhood memories. Browning's quick wit, and her ability to paint a vivid Southwestern landscape peppered with crisp characters create a "can't put it down," fast read that will keep readers entertained. Trade's observations like, "She was wearing shiny alabaster cowboy boots that looked as though they'd never kicked a road apple" will have readers, like me, eager to buy book three, to share Trade's next adventure.

100th book
This book was a good ending i think and it was sort of sad though. Lisa was so sure about PJ being the horse she wanted when he was taken away from her so fast! you can kinda of sense the end of the saddleclub while u read, but i also enjoy Pine Hollow, even though its mostly romance stuff. This is a good and really emotional book and it does leave u hanging and wondering if the end is near! buy it!

Wow
I havn't read Stray Horse yet, but it looks REALLY good! Although, i really hope that this isn't the last book in the series, becasue the Saddle Club is just TO GOOD to end. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON"T END THE SADDLE CLUB!
Although things that i think need imporoving are: More books with Phil, more funny bits, like, with Veronica or something. ALthough, i think the books need to have more in them. Everything happens in a short time, like HArd HAt for instance. When i read that, I felt as if i had only read about 6 chapters. Unless its just me, becasue i read pretty fast! hehe
It was a good book though!
Please take my thoughts into consideration Ms. Bryant!
Saddle Club Rules!!!!

Will things ever be the same again?
What a moving book. Lisa's parents have just dropped a big bomb on her. Her parents are getting a divorce and she does not know how to deal with it very well. So she starts spending a lot of time at the local animal shelter where she becomes attached to a stray horse She names PJ and you'll just have to read the book to find out why she named him that. Stevie and Carole are doing the best they can to be supportive of their friend in her time of need. Can they help lisa come to terms with her Parnets divorce and the sudden arrival of Pj's Orginal owner? Just read this book and you will learn all the anwers. This book Really helps to Tie into the first book of the Pine hollow Series Called the Long Road Home. Be sure to read this one!!!! IT had me tears!

A Teacher's Dream
I'm glad I purchased this book during summer break. It gives advice on how to prepare 30 different centers along with amusing management tips. It is a lot to digest and prepare but its "ready to copy" log sheets for student accountability, and the materials lists for each center, makes set up a snap. The centers work on skills that I have taught and practiced at different times during the school year. Those skills can now be reiforced on a regular basis during our reading block. Even the choice of materials adds an element of fun. I can't wait to test out these center ideas on my third graders!

Makes Teacher's life easier...
This book has useful and fun literacy centers. It comes with the reproducibles you need to make them, which is very helpful. It also has sheets for recording to help students be accountable for their center work. It's a good one, and my Mentor teacher agreed, and rushed to get her own after observing my reading group/center time!

Wonderful!
I have used this book and the strategies and centers described within in my first grade classroom and find them tremendously beneficial. The children are able to actively take part in the decision making regarding their own learning, and they have a lot of fun. It also allows me to get individual testing and small group reinforcement of skills taught, as well as book club (reading groups!) I have even presented workshops for other educators using this book as a resource, and recommend it to all of the participants. The ideas, the blackline masters, even the sensible ways to keep track of work done (primarily logs and reading tickets that the children are responsible for!) are wonderful. A suggestion for anyone who purchases this book: give yourself some time to read through, digest, plan, and put together the ideas in this book before you try to implement them. I purchased it in October of 1999, but I didn't try to fully implement the program until December of 1999. It was worth it!

Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too
In this book Pooh, Piglet, and Rabbit all come up with a plan for unbouncing tiger. The reason that they want to do this is because tiger always bounces into them and they fall to the ground. So Rabbit comes up with a plan to unbounce tiger. The plan was to take him into the woods and get him lost for one night so the next day when they find tiger he wouldn't be bouncy anymore.
The lesson that the book teaches is basically that the way one person or thing is, whether it's a bad thing in your eyes is the way they will always be and no one can change that.
The age level for this book is 4-8. This book was a very good book. I have liked Winnie the Pooh since I was about 4 years old and I would recommend this book to kids everywhere.

Rugrats
Rugrats is a great children's book, because children can learn about friendship, and the difference between good friends and bad friends.
Children would enjoy this book, because it deals with all the obstacles that kids need to accomplish!
This story is about four children that are best friends and they are only about four years old, and one of the children has an older cousin named "Angelica", which picks on her little cousin, and his three friends all the time. The four children's names are Tommy, Chucky, Phil, and Lil, which Phil and Lil are twins , and Tommy's parents are the main parents in this story.

Ten in the Bed
The short story "Ten in the Bed", I think is one of the best children's books that I have ever read! This story is written by Penny Dale, and its copy write is 1988!
Children can learn about picking on their older brothers, or sisters by kicking them out of their bed, so they can have the whole bed to their selves!
