Without doubt this is the most beautiful and fascinating compendium of antique golf clubs you will ever come across. It is well worth every penny. The illustrations are superb and the content flawless. You will be amazed at the splendour of the Clubmakers Art.

A GREAT GIFT!!!
I recently recieved this book as a gift for my birthday from my wife. I was highly impressed with the fine quality and craftmanship of this work of art. I plan to give this book to my friends that are as interested in golf as I am, and even to the ones who don't like golf! No one could ever be displeased with this book! My compiments to Jeff Ellis on his accomplishment.

An excellent work of art!
The Clubmaker's Art is a magnificent example of hard work and dedication to the golf industry. I received the book recently, and I couldn't be happier with what I got. The pictures are so life like, and they pop out at you. This is the best example of quality in the writing industy, and I think that every golf collecter, lover, and player must get this book!

Synergy for young readers
Historically accurrate and wonderfully ingrained with the fantasy that resides in most of us....what if... . Imagination and determination, courage and more are conveyed to the reader as something innate in these children. A wonderful adventure that bridges cultural and ethnic differences to show what we are meant to be ... each for the other. Also a great tool to integrate history and literature in elementary and middle school.

Inspiring
My youngest grandaughter (12years old) came home with this. Reading isn't her favorite time consuming thing in life but she began spouting off all of these history facts that caught me somewhat off guard. I inquired about her recent knowledge find and she told me about this book and how she thought it was so fun to read. Naturally, I then had to have one for myself. I couldn't hardly put it down. It was a fun mixture of Paul Revere, facts about him that I would have never known and a group of kids finding themselves forced into using their skills and witts to get out of some pretty tough situations.
I'm 56 and it just goes to show, no matter what your age learning can still be fun.
I hope Mrs. Ritt gets to read this because I would like to thank her for her efforts to bring this story to life.

First of all I would like to say that I'm a interested and concerend parent. This book would be a great addition to a school libary. I've read all the harry potters and I have talked to my kids about what and how they feel about them. we understand the mystical and unreal type of books they are,
yet this book is real and mysticial at the same time. I really feel that this book taught my childern and made them interested in our history. I would really recomend this to all grade school kids!

Bully!
Great Book or as the british say Bully! I really like this bookalot a verconica is finally getting what she deserves! She thinks shecan be so sneaky and try to ruin the saddle clubs friendship with their friend Lady Theresa but her plan back fires when the other girls find out whats really going on!

I love it!
Before I go on about how good this book is,I wound like to point out something: Tessa never SNUBBED Veronica. She was courtious and gracious the whole way, even when it wasn't necessary. I am amused by Mrs Bryant's choices of horse and rider and the new horses of whom we only know one. I must say that the ending was particularly good.Although I can't believe that everyone would listen to Veronica. All in all a great addition to the saddle club.

FUNNY, HUMOROUS AND GRRREEAT!!!!
I would have given it more stars if I could. My rating on Saddle Club books will never change. They'll always be five stars! Anyway, this was a wondeful book! I liked the tricks that the Saddle Club played on Veronica. Not the tricks Veronica played on them. If you have read The Secret of The Stallion, (Saddle Club Super Edition #2) you would have understood what tricks they had played on Veronica when they went to England. Still, this book is fantastic and I'm sure all Saddle Club fans would agree to it. To all the Saddle Club fans: e-mail me at palomino2810@hotmail.com Note: You MUST buy this book!!!!!!

Wow
I enjoyed the book, but I was eager to learn more about the men in their lives. Who were these men and how did they feel about the experiences.

Augusta Unveiled
This is a terrific book written by a member's wife and their daughter. I am a big golf fan and have read several books about Augusta National and the Masters in recent years, but this one has an entirely different angle--a woman's perspective, and an insider-woman at that. The authors are respectful of the club, but they also are open in offering dozens of refreshing anecdotes that are funny and border on irreverent. There are also a bunch of photos in the book depicting the golf course from a candid viewpoint.

Can't put it down - great golfing insider stories
I started the book about 6 and finished about 12. Every golfer, Masters fan, everyone in Augusta will want one of theses books.

It's full of real inside stories of the Club, its founders, the grounds, the caddies, the famous players.

I know the author personally and figured her book would be interesting but did not expected to be glued to it. The wording contained many of the unique phrases used at the National and un golfing. I could not put the book down.

I am not a golfer, but my dad was and I have heard him day dream about golf; I've seen him high on 72 and down on 90; it seems the author got to the point she day dreamed about sandtraps, the rough, the fairways, how she would handle different shots.

Stories about personal encounters with famous golfers and politicians were great. The stories about the caddies and their betting, "ownership" of golfers, their nicknames were fascinating.

The stories about how one gets into the club gives the Augusta National a sense of intrigue.

The stories about the president of the club presented a man bigger than life, who put fear into the hearts of the wealthy and powerful.

Fishing stories, access to the club during the Masters, access to the club during off season were all highly readable and clearly inside, non-public, unpublished views into a closed society.

That only a few people were there at a time off season was amazing; there is/or was a wonderful wine cellar; there were no socials unrelated to golf and no 5 somes.

This is a wonderful book of private information that every golfer will enjoy, buy 2 of (one to keep and one to give away).

You "Go On Girl"
I think I read about your book in Essence or saw it on Oprah, can't remember, but I am so glad that I did. It has helped me start a book club with a few friends that enjoy reading, but also just enjoy the company of other african-american women. It's a great way to get away from the husband and kids and bond with your friends. One thing that we are going to add to our club is a community kitchen, we will be cooking with one another also.

Great book!

A "Must Read" for the casual or serious reader!
Where else can you find: 1. The history of African American reading groups in America 2. The history of African American literature genres 3. The history of the only African American national reading group network

4. Previews of the works and interviews of national best-selling, award winning authors

This is a goldmine of information!!!!

this book was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is just what I needed to start a book club in my area. I have not quite read all about the different authors. Telling us from start to finish is the best outline I have ever read in starting a project like this one. Thanks so much for sharing a book like this for African American women.I will keep you in touch about the one I am going to attempt to start here in Columbia ,Tn.

Great for Existing Book Clubs
This book was great for my existing book club- it gave us new ideas and discussion questions to liven up our meetings. The recipes are delicious and add to the "flavor" of our discussions. This is a beautifully done book- anyone thinking about starting a book club or if you have a club already can appreciate it's elegance
and insights.

A Thorough and Beautiful Presentation
This book provides the reader with helpful hints for starting a book club as well as a wide selection of books and discussion questions that will leave book club members reading and discussing for years. The reader will also not be able to resist trying out one of the delicious recipes that are beautifully displayed throughout the book. A very beautiful as well as useful book!!

Great Book for a Variety of Interests
Good Books, Good Friends, Good Food is a book that is of great interest to me on a number of levels. I like reading, especially the classics. This book gives a quick synopsis of some really good books as well as tidbits on the authors. I found these little sidelights to be very interesting. The recipes have produced some truly delicious foods that were most delightful. These are my favorite parts and I am sure others who are interested will appreciate the wonderful, step by step suggestions on how to start a successful book club. Included are great questions and ideas for discussion in a book club. In addition, it is a beautiful book to look through. I liked the book so well I bought 10 and gave them to my 4 daughters, my Mom, my sister & sisters-in-law, a dear fried, and of course, one for me.

Nice photographic support to the book, but...
I am a fan of Wim Wenders' work, and I loved the BVSC CD and the movie, but in all honesty, except for the intro by Wenders and the closing interview with Ry Cooder, the entire book basically consists of shots from the movie along with the dialogs by the BVSC stars and the lyrics to the songs they interpret, i.e. material that the movie and the CD already provide. Yes: I admit I had higher expectations with it. In any case, I have to say Ibrahim Ferrer's monologue toward the end, when they visit NYC for their performance at Carnegie Hall, is a very touching moment.

A photo album that depicts the key moments in the movie
I recently saw the movie Buena Vista Social Club for the first time and I liked it so much that I wanted to learn more about it. That's why I ordered this book.

At first, I was a little disappointed when I received the book and found out that some of the images were low-resolution digital scans. However, after reviewing the book as a whole, I really got to like it. There are quite a few large high-resolution images that more than compensate for their low-res counterparts.

The book is mainly a photo-album which includes the transcriptions of some of the dialogs and interviews from the movie, as well as the lyrics of some of the songs (all of them translated into English).

One of the only pieces of material in this book that are not an integral part of the movie is the foreword by Wim Wenders, where he describes his whole experience of going to Cuba to make the movie. Very, very interesting to read! The other two are an interview of Ry Cooder with Peter Kemper and the biographies of the musicians.

This book is good to have around when you are having a conversation about the movie with your friends. You'll find the photos and dialogs from all the key moments in the movie.

A "must" for BVSC fans and Cuban music enthusiasts!
Buena Vista Social Club is more a coffee table addition than a serious in-depth study, but will prove a 'must' for any prior fan of the Buena Vista Social Club and Cuban music in particular. Photos, film stills and text accompany first-person capsule sketches by the participants of the BVSC group in this companion book to the film.

Thrills galore on the Norfolk Broads
In this book Ransome focuses on the two most recently introduced members of his juvenile cast, Dick and Dorothea Callum, who are sent to spend part of their Easter holidays with Mrs. Barrable, their mother's old schoolmistress, along the rivers of the Norfolk wetlands. Eager to learn to sail so they can take part in the adventures planned for the lake next summer, their spirits plummet when they learn that Mrs. Barrable "can't sail her boat by herself" and plans to use it only as a houseboat. Unexpected salvation occurs in the form of Tom Dudgeon, son of a local doctor, who finds himself a fugitive after setting a motor-cruiser adrift to protect a coot's nest being observed by himself and his five friends (Port and Starboard, the twin girls who live near the Dudgeons, and the Death and Glories, Joe, Pete, and Bill). Seeking shelter from the outraged motorboaters aboard Mrs. Barrable's rented craft, he meets the trio and finds instant common ground, and quickly agrees to serve as Captain and teach the Callums "the ropes." Though there's less imaginative play in this book than in the rest of the series, it still features Ransome's splendid insight into juvenile minds and character, plus loving description of the countryside and a strong consciousness of the environment that must have been unusual in the 1930's. Though this volume will never be my favorite of the series--somehow things are never so lively without Captain Nancy Blackett on board!--it succeeds on its own terms and will be a pleasant change of pace for families reading aloud in sequence.

An exciting children's boating adventure
This is the fifth of Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" tales, although, in fact, it features not a single member of either the Swallows or the Amazons. Nor, indeed, is it set anywhere near the English Lake District. Instead, it describes the Norfolk Broads boating adventures of the two D's (first introduced to the reader in the previous book, "Winter Holiday").

The tale is set in the children's Easter holidays, just a few months after the events of the preceding book. In it, Dick and Dorothea are anxious to learn the rudiments of sailing so that they can take a more active part in the fun when they next meet up with the Swallows and Amazons. Dick is also keen to do some bird watching. It is almost inevitable, therefore, that soon after arriving in Norfolk, they find therefore themselves tangled in up in (and helping out with) the troubles of the Coot Club - a group of local (boat-mad) children dedicated to the protection of the Broads' unique bird population.

Ransome loved the Norfolk Broads with a passion that possibly even exceeded his love of the Lake District. In this book, he paints a portrait of Norfolk, its waterways and the people who live on or by them, making plain his love for this unique environment and its way of life. The story centres on his concerns over their continuing destruction through ever-increasing tourism (and the increasingly thoughtless actions of its visitors), a major problem even 65 years ago. (It is far worse now, of course!) Unlike his Lake District stories, this one uses the real names of the places that feature in it and revels in describing them. Indeed, the book reads almost like a guidebook at times, although you barely notice this, for it is never anything less that engaging in its content. As always, Ransome combines both narrative and instructive content with consummate ease, tempered here with an excitement to the events that unfold. He weaves a tale that is as enthralling and captivating as ever, that will appeal to lovers of good tales whatever their age. The author's own pen-and-ink drawings are as charming as ever, too.

This is one of the few Swallows and Amazons books that can be read earlier in the sequence than it appears (if you really must) without major detriment to either itself or the earlier stories (except, perhaps "Winter Holiday"). You do need to have read it before most of the ones that follow it, however, as the events described here feature heavily in later ones.

Birds and Boating
Another great S & A classic, this time dealing with nature conservation. When Tom sets a noisy boat loose from its moorings in order to save a nest of Coot eggs, whose parents have been frightened off by the boat, he knows there will be trouble if the occupants catch sight of him, but not how much. A wonderful tale of boating on the Norfolk Broads with Ransome's usual blend of adventure and imagined adventure.

The Elder or Poetic Edda (Viking Club Translation Series, V. 2.)

Author: Edda Saemunder
Amazon base price: $65.50

No, no it's not by "Edda Saemunder"
First of all, I really like this book, and am saddened that it's currently out of print. Some have expressed some criticism with the "Christianization" of the material, particularly in some of the illustrations, but it still is a favorite.

Sombody should explain to these knuckleheads at Amazon that the title of the book is indeed "the Elder or Poetic Edda"; however, it is attributed (mistakenly) to an Icelandic bishop named Saemendur; Saemunder's first name is not Edda. The actual author is unknown. Olive Bray is the translator.

Old Norse/English
I have had this edition of the Edda Saemundar for many years now (the Viking Society first published it in 1908), and consider it the most valuable simply because it is in both Old Norse and English. This makes it possible to unquestioningly follow the original as closely as possible. The Viking Society has always maintained high standards of scholarship.

You'll be Enthralled
This is my absolute favorite English/Old Norse Translation of the Poetic Edda. It has marvelous woodcut illustrations and is side by side Old Norse and English, giving the reader an instant feel for the beauty in the poetic meter of the Original. Bray's translation is soft and artful and at times emotional, and yet the power behind the epic words is not at all compromised. For the Eddic enthusiast, Norse Lore scholar, or heathen devotee this book is worth every penny of its $100+ sales price. It succeeds where Lee Hollander's very literal acedemic translation feels dry and boring. This book is a treasure no Norse Mythology library should be without.

Interesting ideas
I don't know if book groups existed as far back as Gutenberg (religious book groups?), but can testify that they have been around since at least the 1960s as this reviewer joined an existing one during the Summer of Love (love to me was a novel). The authors do provide some historical perspective as Regency readers know of the reading groups formed in that era, etc. However, in recent years perhaps promulgated by Oprah, book groups have flourished making it more complex with so many choicest to choose the right one for a reader. Ellen Moore and Kira Stevens are experts on forming book groups, how to stir the debate on a particular book, and troubleshooting especially when the group seems stagnant among other topics. In GOOD BOOKS LATELY: THE ONE-STOP RESOURCE FOR BOOK GROUPS AND OTHER GREEDY READERS, the authors provide advice as they have done with their consulting firm.

This self help book is easy and fun to follow as it offers practical guidance on forming and maintaining a quality book group whether it is generalists or genre specific. Anyone who wants to start or improve a group will find this reference book offers solid tips to make a successful go. Most of all the Ms, Moore and Ms. Stevens encourage to keep on reading even if you are a group of one, but will appreciate a vigorous debate with others.

Good Books Lately is a joy to read
Good Books Lately is a joy to read--Kira Stevens and Ellen Moore have written a fun, informative and practical guide to everything you'd want to know about book groups. From tracing book groups back to sewing circles and salons to the day they met Oprah (yes, we're envious), Moore and Stevens give book groups the respect they deserve. The funny asides and anecdotes (like the Book Group Hall of Shame) make this such a personable and friendly guide. And the practical sections of the book are so comprehensive, intelligent and insightful, I know I'll be going back again and again to Good Books Lately--from choosing the book to discussing it, I feel I'll be a much better book group member now!

Nothing else like it!
I've never read another book like "Good Books Lately: The One-Stop Resource for Book Groups and Other Greedy Readers." It's clever and smart without being condescending. Completely accessible! The book is a blend of history, anecdote and How-To. Whether you're in a book club, or just an avid reader on your own, this book is helpful. It gives great tips on being a more active reader and participant in discussion of books.
I had the good fortune of attending a book reading by the authors, Kira Stevens and Ellen Moore, and they are even more charming and clever in person!
