Orphan Trains & Their Precious Cargo: The Life's Work of Rev. H. D. Clarke
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (31 May, 2001)
Authors: Herman D. Clarke and Clark Kidder
Amazon base price: $24.95

A Researchers Paradise
Clark Kidder documents Rev. Clarke's regions of operation--Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri. The journals and notes of Rev. Clarke show his great caring and concern for these orphan children. In some cases, there are personal notes from the children he placed.
Ever wonder why so many children went to Hopkinton, Ia. when the area could not support them? Rev. Clarke's journals and notes reveal information on at least 80 of these mystery children. There are over 400 children listed in these pages.

These pages document the placement history of these children. They reveal how many times, the same children would have to be moved before a suitable home could be found for them, and why the same children appear on more than one state's lists. It documents how sometimes children would be picked up locally and transported further down the line. Kidder points out how sometimes the children would wander away from the trains to disappear forever.
No orphan train research is complete without reading this facinating book.

A tie in the railway of history.
Two hundred thousand children were placed through the
train project. What a monumental impact on American history that is! It is astounding that this knowledge is not part of the commonly known events that shaped our nation. I hope the first person reports of Rev. Clarke found in this compilation will correct some of that void in history.

An Exceptional Book!
I found Mr. Kidder's book to be fascinating. The photos of the dozens of little orphans are so endearing, and the stories of their trials and triumphs are immensely entertaining. Rev. H. D. Clarke was truly a remarkable individual. You'll find this book impossible to put down after you begin reading it. The balance of the book is told in Rev. Clarke's own words, and those of the orphans, which gives one an intimate and historical look at a most remarkable chapter in America's history.

A Cargo of Women: Susannah Watson and the Convicts of the Princess Royal

100 women transported for crime
100 female convicts were sent from England to Sydney on the Princess Royal. Babette Smith has traced the fates of all of them, so far as possible. For a few, she has fascinating detail. Susannah Watson, a forebear of the author's, regarded transportation as the "best thing befell me, except for you children."
Scholarly but full of lively detail and action, this is a remarkable work

Australia's Fallen Women
This is a splendid history of the women who, in the 1830s, were convicted of various petty (and some not so petty) offenses and shipped off to the convict colonies of early Australia. Many American booksellers still stock "The Fatal Shore," but in many ways this is a more compelling story, not just because of its observations on early Victorian morality but also because of the fascinating, if tragic, story of its central character, Susannah Watson. Great adventure, great history.

This man knows what takes place in Caribean shipping
When watching ships coming into port in the United States, it is hard to imagine that there are still many places in the world where things do not work so easy.

Max Hardberger has seen it and knows how to tell you about it.

While this book actually is more of a textbook than an easy read, it really draws you in.

His crime novel the jumping off place is pretty good too!

absolutely mesmerizing
Hardberger's writing brings to mind the clean and cool descriptive prose of T.E. Lawrence.

Cargo of Eagles

Author: Margery Allingham

One of her best
Margery Alllingham died while writing this book. It was finished by her husband, Philiip Youngman Carter, an artist and her lifelong collaborator -- and it's none the worse for that. It's got atmosphere by the bucket: the ragged edges of London that merge into noman's lands of forgotten buiding developments and old rubbish heaps, ending in a scruffy little seaside village haunted by kids on motorbikes. Lugg likes it so much he's planning to have a bungalow built there, and an American historian is fossicking around out of love for a young doctor who has inherited a house there. And why is a once-promising poet living there in obscurity? Campion co-opts the historian to help in a mysterious mission and the plot thickens. Sadly the two Campion novels Youngman Carter wrote after Allingham's death are not up to scratch, though the one that isn't Falcon (sorry I've forgotten the title) has just a touch of her elegiac poetry. Elegiac poetry in a mystery writer? Read her and find out.

A true story of showboat life
This is a must reading for people who were around in the 20s, 30s 40s and 50s and anywhere near the Ohio river. It's a true to life story of the TJ Reynolds family who brought old time showboat entertainment to thousands of people along the river. I found it to be a fascinating glimpse of life aboard showboats and the trials and tribulations of this Reynolds family. What's interesting is that after reading the book, one can actually experience seeing a play on the last showboat, Reynold's Majestic, even today in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Never to be forgotten
I was a bit skeptical to read this book, all I knew about the author was that she wrote poems - and I hadn't read any of them. Much to my pleasure - this book was fascinating. It was raw, real, honest and utterly irrisistable. I found myself reading slower and slower as I got to the end - simply because I didn't want it to end. The reader is immediatly brought into the narrator's world, you feel her feelings, her fright and her pain. It's a great read - one that you won't ever forget.

Stuart Woods- White Cargo
Stuart Woods 1988 novel "White Cargo" is an excellent read. A fast paced story that keeps the reader captivated, in my case I literally could not put this book down. This is the story of Wendell Catledge aka Cat a millionaire who made his money through invention of a printer. Catledge and his wife Katherine and daughter Jinx fall prey to what appears to be piracy while yachting on the coast of South America. Catledge wakes up in hospital to find his yacht has sunk and wife and daughter are dead. Catledge returns to the states and is contempating an end to his own life, when he recieves a phone call one day, and hears Jinx's voice. Catledge now has a new reason for living, to find his daughther and to avenge his wife's killers. Catledge begins a relentless search which will lead him deep into the Columbian Jungle. To say much more would be giving away a good story, one more thing I would like to say is I really liked the characters in this novel like Bluey Holland, Meg and even Prince a more sophisticated villian. "White Cargo" is an enthralling novel which will not disappoint, with a timless value to it, highly recommended.

A True Page Turner
This book was my first Stuart Woods novel that I've read and I wasn't disappointed. The action starts off quickly and keeps you turning pages well into the night. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the crookedness of South America, the drug trade, action, and mystery. Definitely a quick read.

Great Characters!!
Stuart Woods really did a great job with this book. Cat Catledge is the main character, and at times the only character. Woods had to do some very hard work with creating the Catledge character because there just weren't that many characters to work with. After reading the whole novel, I felt like I had known Cat forever. The story starts out very good and plenty of action occurs within the first 50 pages (which is always very important). The story continued to be excellent and had many interesting different twists throughout the story! I would definitely recommend this book and plenty of other Woods novels!!
