The Home Environmental Sourcebook: 50 Environmental Hazards to Avoid When Buying, Selling, or Maintaining a Home

This is a scary book in some ways. One doesn't enjoy thinking of one's home, after all, as a potential deathtrap and someplace that can make one sick. You, like me, may be surprised at the number of potential hazards in the materials and systems of your "Home Sweet Home." However, reading this book can help you locate and fix potential hazards before they kill you or make you ill, so in that sense, it is a hopeful and helpful book filled with information you may not want to know, but should, for your own good.

Helpful, Hands-On Guide to Evaluating Environmental Issues
I recently purchased my first home and had so many headaches to deal with just on the basics of the transaction, I wasn't initially sure how to address possible environmental issues or where I would find the time to figure them all out. The Home Environmental Sourcebook, with its practical, well-organized and easy to understand information, solved my dilemma. It allowed me to investigate environmental issues of particular concern (e.g., lead paint, asbestos) quickly by providing concise information by topic area and letting me know where else I could find more detailed information. The book was also helpful in that a quick scan of topics covered in the book helped identify issues which I hadn't been considering, but which were ultimately important not only in my decision-making process, but in the very negotiation of the purchase contract. Highly recommended.

Renovator Recommends "Home Environmental Sourcebook"
I recommend this book to everyone in the renovation field. The content on older homes is very important in limiting future liability and callbacks. The chapters on lead paint and asbestos alone could save the contractor thousands of times the cost of the book

Homes and Other Black Holes

Time for Q & A with Dave Barry about that age-old question: "What do I need to know before I buy a house?":

Q: What's the best way to determine a realistic price range?"
A: Take your total annual family income, including coins that have fallen behind the bureau, and any projected future revenue you may have been notified about via personalized letters from Mr. Ed McMahon stating that you may have already won 14 million dollars. Then, multiply by something other than 6.

Q: Is there a secret to having a beautiful lawn?
A: Yes and no. If you fail to feed, fertilize, and water your lawn, it will die. However, if you feed, fertilize, and water your lawn, it will die.

Q: How can I avoid spending money on do-it-yourself homeowner's projects?
A: Find a contractor. Their silent motto is "We Never Show Up." The Romans lived among ruins. You must too.

Q: What do 1) "charming" and 2) "newly renovated" mean in house ads?
A: That's easy! 1) Rooms the size of nasal spray cartons, and 2) that the walls have been pretty well scraped clean in the room where the demonic beings from another dimension came through the TV set and caused the previous occupant's heads to explode.

I've been avoiding buying a house for years, and after reading this book, I am convinced I have made the right decision.

Thanks Dave -- finaly a guide to home buying I understand!
Dave hits the nail on the head with this refreshing view of not only how to buy, but maintain, and eventually sell your home.

When I prepared to have a baby join our family, I turned to Dave Barry's "Baby's and other hazzards of sex" to help me make that adjustment.

Thank the maker that Dave was also there for me when we got ready to buy our first home!

If you are thinking about buying a home, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It explains that it doesn't really matter who all those people are who show up at the closing...but that it's your responsibility to keep writing out the checks as long as someone is in line.

There are hillariously practical tips to searching for, buying, and maintaining your home. Dave presents hints and suggestions that will help you to appear knowledgeable while looking at houses, how to get into serious debt, and even about challenges you will face while redecorating.

He even has the audacity to suggest that it's possible to redecorate "for under $650,000." Come on Dave! Everyone knows that's impossible!

And when you are all done fixing up, being worn down, and you are ready to sell your home, he also presents hints on how to fool someone into buying your "black hole."

Great stuff through and through! 5 stars for humor and real life applicability!

A must read for first time home buyers
One of the funniest books I've ever read or heard about. I laughed so hard that I couldn't continue reading !

BUYING A HOUSE? ALREADY GOT ONE? This is THE book!
After wading through the countless other 'how-to' house decorating/feng shui books out there, I came across Brangham's great HOUSEWISE. Her advice is sound, smart, and easy to apply. The lessons in here never go out of style. My husband and I just bought and renovated a house and using the basics we learned in here, we've added probably $80,000 worth of value for half the cost!!! I highly, highly reccommend this book! This is the one we've been looking for.... READ IT AND SEE!

Fine outline with creative details.
Hands on experience for the person thinking of getting into renovation for fun and profit. You will be well led.

Best advice on home buying
No one should buy a home without reading this book first! It is a gem--packed with useful information in a very readable format. The author uses his knowledge of the real estate business and his own experiences as a professional to provide a valuable and thoughtful perspective on the whole process. I wish I'd read this book before my first foray into the world of home-buying, but even after several such ventures in my life, I still found I learned a lot by reading this book.

A map for the homebuyer
Buying a house would be a lot easier for all of us if we did it frequently. But most of us only buy a home a few times in our lives and, face it, the process is dauntingly complex. As with any complex field, real estate has developed its own technical vocabulary. Fortunately, this book is written in plain English, and makes few assumptions about its readers.

That being the case, it is an invaluable resource to potential home buyers, *especially* if the buyer is looking in the author's home state of Colorado.

The reader learns about the advantages of "buyer agents" and is walked step-by step, in plain English, through the maze involved in finding and purchasing just the right home. Numerous anecdotal "horror stories" illustrate the potential pitfalls in the buying process.

I know *I* will be able to make better decisions on my next house purchase after having read this book.

Essential Warehouse Manager's Desk Reference
If you are responsible for the integrity of your company's inventory, then I strongly recommend that you read "Inventory Accuracy". Written in plain English, with an emphasis on the practical, this book contains a wealth of valuable tips and techniques for both the new and seasoned warehouse manager. While thoroughly addressing current technology, the book also emphasizes the importance of the human factor.

A good read and an invaluable tool...

Excellent book on what is still important ... Inventory!
I greatly enjoyed the new book, especially the detailed sections on measuring accuracy, cycle counting, combining count logic selections in creation of a count, the "bin locator" versus the "warehouse management" systems, and count variances.

The practical information continues even into warehouse personnel issues - such as shrinkage and the wide variety of people personalities that are involved in shrinkage.

Many effective and practical tips are provided for the technical AND non-technical operations professional. If you are a warehouse manager or supervisor - then you should get a copy of this book.

Net User's Guide to Buying Selling and Trading Collectibles
Any book that can have me chuckling through an explanation of how to create a web page deserves special mention. The Net User's Guide ups the reader's giggle quotient while deftly communicating the how-to's of not only simple web site construction, but the whole, intriguing world of collectibles and the Internet. I'm a relative newcomer to collecting, and I appreciated the depth of information, and especially the inside tips! Having access to the Members Only section of the author's supporting web site is a major bonus, too. I believe even seasoned 'gatherers' will find much to satisfy their thirst for ever more knowledge about their own particular (and, as R.J. Gulliver points out, sometimes peculiar) passion.

Fantastic Introduction to Collectibles on the Internet!
This is a wonderful book that gives a very thorough introduction to collectibles on the internet. Mr. Gulliver has really done his research! He includes information on why we collect, and has sections on buying, selling and trading. The author gives lots of examples from his own experience, and gives the reader hints on how to be successful and careful. He gives detailed advice on using internet auctions as a safe and exciting way to find or sell a special item.

One of my favorite parts is the appendix! Mr. Gulliver has a large list of web sites for companies that deal in collectibles, making it easy to check into them. He also lists many of the internet auction sites, complete with a review of the good and bad points of each.

Another part of the book I liked was the very detailed instructions on how to build a web site of your own! The author gives easy to follow information on basic html, plus how to link pictures and upload your site from your computer. The pictures throughout the book are a real plus!

I strongly recommend this book to anyone that is involved in any way with collectible items on the internet! While it is geared to those that are new to auctions, message boards and internet buying and selling, it is a valuable resource for experienced collectors as well! I have been buying and selling on auction sites for some time and really enjoyed the book. I sure wish I had had it when I first got started! I will keep this book close to my computer as a handy reference!
