zero practical value
I bought this book attracted by "maintaining, modifying" words pointed in the title, however, this book has nothing to do with aforementioned subjects. Mostly it is the history of Impreza. This book has a zero practical value for maintenance. I am very disappointed by misleading title.

Very cool book for WRX/Impreza fans
If you like the WRX or the Impreza in general, then this book does a really nice job of covering the differences between model years, and various international models, with some maintenance and modification information information to boot. Also contains some great photos for the various models and options.

100 Major Item Home Inspection Checklist for Home Buyers and 10 Point Criteria for Choosing an Independent Home Inspector

Author: Stanley C. Harbuck

a good counterpoint to the typical home buying books
This booklet is unflinching in its depiction of unscrupulous real estate agents being out to get you. The author gives useful information about what tricks you should look out for during the inspection process and in how agent-approved inspectors may not be looking out for you as much as they could be. Self-serving information, no doubt, given the author is an independent inspector, but it is good to hear the story from all sides.

After reading this booklet I knew what kind of inspections I needed to have done. I understood what the inspector would and would not do, and what the inspector could reasonably tell me and what they could not.

The booklet struck me as overly paranoid with regard to the lack of integrity of real estate agents. But this booklet (yes booklet, it is stapled like a magazine, not bound) serves as a useful counterpoint to the home buying guides written by real estate agents, which usually paint a much rosier home-buying picture.

An Overpriced Mixed Blessing
Buyer Be Wise is a 93 page book intended to be a consumer's guide to buying quality nutritional supplements: vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, hormonal products, homeopathic remedies and glandular extracts. (The description says 108 pages, so they must be counting the acknowledgements and forwards.) Four of the pages are either entirely blank or have only one quote on them, and many other pages have extremely wide margins occupying 1/3 of the page! The bulk of the book is interviews with experts in natural medicine who explain what to look for in nutrition supplements. Although the information on choosing vitamins and minerals, is good, it's incomplete, and not consolidated into an easy to use format, such as a bullet pointed checklist. There are also some omissions re. the other types of supplements, that I find irresponsible. Although the description lists Alan Gaby (a well respected holistic M.D.) as a co-author, he only wrote the forward.

The chapters are as follows:

Introduction - A 3 page lengthy explanation of the book, which could have been made in 3 paragraphs.

Chapter 1, "General Guidelines" - This awkwardly written chapter takes 4 pages to make the point that cheaper products are usually not the best quality products. However, there are several excellent quoted paragraphs from experts in the field explaining why this is so, and a good interview explaining label reading.

Chapter 2 "Building a Strong Foundation" - Scattered throughout this chapter is information on choosing quality multivitamins/minerals. While this information provides a basic foundation, one could follow all this advice, still be confused at the supplements counter, and still choose a poorly absorbed supplement. The important topic of choosing minerals that will be well absorbed is not addressed. The chapter also contains pretty good discussions of why supplements are necessary in the author's opinion, and natural vs. synthetic. However, while the reader is told to choose the natural forms of vitamins D and E, there's no mention of how the natural form of vitamin D is listed on the label.

Chapter 3 "Buying herbal supplements" - About half the chapter is an excellent discussion of the different forums of herbs such as tinctures, fluid extract, standardized extracts, capsules. However, there are several pages on what herbs are used for what conditions, which seem to be filler that's readily available in other books.

Chapter 4, "Buying hormonal supplements" is the largest chapter (20 pages), but doesn't give much information on how to buy these supplements, other than dosing. Furthermore, there's zero mention of the fact that hormonal supplements cause your body to down-regulate (decrease) production of the supplemented hormone. Instead, there are very gung ho discussions on the benefits of DHEA, progesterone, melatonin and other common hormonal supplements. Not once is it suggested to see a physician and get these hormonal levels tested before messing with one's endocrine system.

Chapter 5 discusses homeopathy and glandulars. If I hadn't read several books on homeopathy, I probably would have been confused by this chapter. There is not enough information in this chapter for one to choose the proper homeopathic remedy for their health condition. However, if a doctor prescribes a particular homeopathic remedy, say rhus tox for poison ivy, this chapter can help the patient choose from several rhus tox options. The discussion on glandulars is very pro-glandular, and makes no mention of the fact that these animal products can come from sick and contaminated carcasses.

Chapter 6 is a very brief chapter containing a good discussion distinguishing credible supplement literature from sales hype. The book also contains a glossary/index of terms. There's also a 2 page recommended reading list, mostly entire books on individual supplements. My favorite book on this topic (not on Gazella's list) is Michael Murray's "Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements."

Overall, this book is an overpriced mixed blessing with the best information in chapters 1, 2, 3, and 6. The book is worth checking out of the library or buying used at half price or less. I definitely do not recommend buying this book at full price.

Good story but poor editing/proofing hinders enjoyment
First, let me say that reading Trading Paper is a must before starting Buying Time. As a sequel, most of the charcter development was done in the first novel and I just don't see how you could jump in and have it all make very much sense without the background of Trading Paper. I enjoyed the story and indider's view into the high-dollar Arab horse world of the 80s that Canberra depicts, but the publsiher did an atrocious job n the editing and proofreading which really took away some of the book's enjoyment. Never the less, I still founf myself quickly reading the novel to find out exactly who had done what in this world of double crossing and schemes gone awry. Overall a good book, but the publisher needs to hire an editor/proofreader that knows the difference between whether and weather.

Good writer falls short on substance.
I bought this book hoping that the financial editor of Money Magazine would give me some real nuggets of wisdom on car leasing. Alas, this book favored me with basic information available in magazine articles -- which is probably where he gleaned his material. I would love to see a more in-depth and careful analysis of the subject

First Home Buying Guide: How to Do It Right the First Time!
This book is an excellent first step to the home buying process. It gives a brief outline of the process that you must go through to purchase your first house. Though it lacks the true depth of information that is needed for true due dilligence for a purchase of this side, it gives you the eight steps that you must follow for a successful home purchase.

Middle of the pack
Pros:
- The writer has a laid back style that is easy to read and understand.
- The book covers most of the topics you'll need to know about when buying or selling a house.
- Some good examples are provided for problem scenarious and
"what if" situtations.

Cons:
- It doesn't appear as though a proper editing has been done. Some of the web sites listed are still in pure HTML code rather than in edited text. Furthermore, some of the software mentioned cannot be found on the included CDROM.
- The material is lacking in nitty gritty details.

For the price it's not too bad, but I should have spent my money on a book about buying instead of buying & selling.

Makes farming with the phone a little easier.
Many people get nervous when calling a cold contact. The book shows descriptive conversations for the phone farm to ease your tensions. It also covers objections by the prospect. A quiz is included to prepare you for the real thing. Stratagy of the telemarketing methods are realavant to the real estate market. Also discussed is after the initial contact when a prospect calls you. Overall the book contains a lot of information. Most of it can be used as is. Some modifying of the scripts may be needed to fit your particular case.
