Illustrated Plymouth & Desoto Buyer's Guide (Motorbooks International Illustrated Buyer's Guide)
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (November, 1996)
Author: Jim Benjaminson
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

Buyer's Guide - NOT!
The title should read "A General Mini-Overview of Plymouths and Desotos". This book does not talk about value, does not deal in parts but only gives very little information on these cars through the years. The type of information included in this book can be found, in much more detail and thoroughness, in less costly books which I already have. There are less than 4 pages of generalizations dedicated to my 1956 Plymouth. Save your money.

Excellent source of information, concise, clear and readable
Excellent source of information, concise, clear and readable. Mr. Benjaminson has combined lots of history and rare factory information with stunning photos and fascinating behind-the-scenes info. It's a must-have for anyone with a DeSoto or Plymouth!

Part of the story
This book is a good place to start if you're thinking of moving to a town of 15,000 or less. It will point you to many interesting communities. However, having used his previous book to guide my last move, and as a resident of one of the towns highlighted in this book (Grinnell), I can honestly say that data only carries you so far. Crampton could provide readers with a great benefit by lengthening the amount of description and flavor for each town. In particular, one key element missing is the 'dynamic' of a town: is it progressive? conservative? excited about education? quick to vote down taxes and bonds? These elements form the 'culture' of a small town, and believe me, the culture of a small town will be *very* important to you!

A good guide to start
As a resident of one of the 120 "best small towns" recommended by Norman Crampton, I was delighted to see Silver City on the list.

While Crampton's book is a good place to start your search for small town living, it is important to realize that each small town offers a unique personality. Some generalizations simply do not apply to Silver City. For example, it is not necessary to join a church (or country club) in order to fit in here. Even a small community like ours has diverse sub-populations: recent retirees, most of whom have some affinity for the arts; old-timers, most of whom are the conservative church-goers Crampton describes; and Hispanic families, many of whom have worked in the mines.

These groups rarely interact, although we usually get along very peacefully. We also have a number of folks who teach at the university -- and we rarely see them around town.

To learn about Silver city, you won't get much information from the Chamber of Commerce or the editor of the newspaper. You'd do better to spend some time hanging out at the AIR cafe, talking to whoever comes in. The morning and afternoon groups are quite different and everyone is friendly.

The author gives some nuts and bolts about each small town. Unfortunately, with the exception of weather, much of this information will change by the time the book is printed. And your decision may well be made by factors that can't be added up.

The best part of the book is the section on economics of small town living. Here, he's right on. You have to budget for travel to a large city now and then. Air travel will be more costly and you need time to drive to a large airport. His view of housing prices seems optimistic. If you move to a desirable city (such as Silver City) expect to pay more for a house than he allows.
And if you move to retire, your economic picture will be quite different. Many newcomers to Silver City are beginning a second career as an artist or writer. Moving without a job is scary -- and I do not recommend it unless you fit the profile I describe in my own book, Making the Big Move.

Outdated and Old
How things used to be, not how they are today. Old processes, old way of doing things. Unfortunately, there's really nothing else out there to fill the gap - this may be the best available. Be warned, if you want to set up a proactive purchasing department, this is not how to do it.

A Must for New Purchasing Agents
This book provides the complete groundwork for setting policies and procedures in a purchasing department. As a new purchasing agent, I value this resource, which enabled me to develop a functional, effective purchasing department.

Good but limited
This is a good book... but the reviews are too few. If they list the model and make of which you're inquiring, GREAT(!). But there exists 100's of models by 100's of builders. A good reference book for the boats they list. The boats listed are generally between the 20 to 35 ft models with a few up to 45 ft.

OK if they list your boat
Good writing. Good reviews of the boats covered. Practical Sailor tells it like it is. I hoped for help with a decision on a 20' trailer sailor but only about 10% of the two volumes covered that area.

A Practical Guide to Inspecting Heating & Cooling
Book is very vague and written in a very run around type format and not getting to the point of what is the subject matter with very limited technical information leaving a person confused as to what is this author talking about, this book is totally not recommended for someone trying to find some detailed expert technical techniques and a waste of time and money. It appears author doesn't want to share his technical expertise in his form of writing. Overall rating 0 NOT RECOMMENDED

HVAC for Home Inspectors
This book cuts through the chase and directs one on what is required to do a home inspection in regards to the HVAC components. The book goes into depth on such things as condensing furnaces, pulse furnaces, one and two pipe boiler systems, heat pumps, etc as it relates to the home inspection. The flow of the book makes it easy to follow and is a great reference book to use in the field.

Any realtor could write a simpler and better book
We don't live in pristine castles and we don't sell homes as such. I do wonder where Feng Shui came in, other than clearing the clutter???

Sell Your Home Using Feng Shui
Excellent book for its intent. I am a realtor and give this as a gift to sellers who list their homes with me. Sellers love its simplicity and suggestions to totally change a home's environment quickly and with little or no expense. The book is very useful.

Tile Floors 1-2-3 (The Home Depot)
... It is a 31 page wire bound flip chart (a glorified pamphlet). The format is like a small steno pad (6" x 9") and the level of detail is very poor. I recommend that you pass on this one.

Best little book for beginners !
When I decided to tile several rooms in my home, I purchased many how-to books on the topic and learned from a professional tile layer. I must say, this little book (only 32 pages) is the best source to get you started. Everything is illustrated with clear photos and I was amazed at how much detail was included which could not be found in the larger books. I found myself referring to this book over and over for reference and before starting a new step. The book covers the types of tiles, tools, how much tile you'll need, materials like grout and adhesives, surface preparation, backerboard installation and of course laying and cutting your tile. It even shows you how to replace a damaged tile ! I am absolutely amazed at the quality and the quantity of the information in this publication. Well worth the money.

Don't use this book. It only helps the dealers not you.
If you'll use the advice in this book, like faxing the dealers in your area for a bid on a car. You will get the worst treatment from them that you can imagine. They will be waiting to get even with you. And they will.
The book tells you just enough to think that you'll be in control of the deal, when in fact it leaves out anything that can actualy acomplish that. Like showing them the money - a cashiers check.
This book cost me a ton of agrevation from dealers and waisted a lot of my time.

Don't make the same mistake I did of buying this book.

This book saved me [a lot]
First of all, this book was written by someone who sold cars for a living and you get the "inside" scoop. So inside, that when I went to buy my first new car ever, as the saleman's banter was taken chapter and verse from the pages. I used every resource suggested and every response suggested by the author and, as a result, paid [substantially] less than the lowest price I was offered by groups like AutoFinders. Not a bad return for [such a small investment!]

Resonably complete and well organized
With 2,500 wines reviewed, you'd think that the whole spectrum of California vintages would be covered...however, I found many of my favorite wines missing. Overall, its a good solid reference and worth the price.

Take the guesswork out of wine selection.
If you don't know a Zinfandel from a Merlot, this is the book for you. The very first wine I selected using this guide was my best purchase to date. It's a must if you plan on touring the wineries of California. This simple to read and easy to understand book makes a pseudo-connoisseur out of a novice.
