Warning! Not really for US residents!
Good amount of information, and one would think from the title that this is a comprehensive guide to buying a home in Florida. BUT...the book was written for UK buyers, and a lot of the book is taken up with information about obtaining residency and the like. For people inside the US, there are high points worth reading, but mostly not. Probably very useful for Canadians and Europeans.

Buying and Selling a Home for Canadians for Dummies

Helpful for the first-time homebuyer
The success of the Dummies series is to supply information to the beginner, but at a pace and level that does not dumb down the material. This book, Buying a Home for Dummies, successfully takes the new home-seeker through the process of buying a house. It is written by 3 Canadians, and is obviously not just a rehash of the U.S. version.

Included are suggestions and hints on finding a real estate agent and lawyer, differences between house-hunting and condo-hunting, things to look for in a house (location, size, age, etc.), and budgeting give an idea of what you can afford. There are a number of helpful regional tips included as well - obviously someone looking for a house in Thunder Bay or Edmonton will care more about heating bills than someone in Victoria or Windsor. There is also a section on selling a first house, so you can keep this book on the shelf until the time comes when you're selling.

The most helpful aspects of the book deal with the mechanics of home purchase. There are a lot of new words to be learned, and they are helpfully gathered in a glossary in the back, as well as being fully explained in context in the text. A discussion on mortgages has the danger of becoming very dull very quickly, something this book manages to avoid by including examples and an efficient writing style.

The only thing I didn't like is the emphasis on big cities - since the authors are from Vancouver and Toronto, they know big cities best, but the underlying theme of the book is based on big cities in active markets. While it's true that Halifax, Calgary, etc. are in a real estate booms right now, many readers of this book (including myself) are going to be from smaller markets, so many of the tricks and advice don't apply. Other than that, it's an excellent introduction to house (and condo) hunting, and we have found it very useful in our first experience in the real estate market.

Good Poetry Book should last me a lifetime
I am one of the thousands of people on this earth who are so much fascinated with Kamikaze. This book is so good and well written. I used some of the poems in this book to read in front of my nephews. They loved the poem so much. I also got a good standing ovation after recited a poem in World War II memorial in my country. I do want to recommend others to get this book for their own collection. It would become a good collectible item. Trust me!

A well-written look back at a Canadian immigrant childhood
Antanas Sileika is an accomplished writer and journalist. In this book of linked stories, a fictional family of Lithuanian immigrants explores their new lives in the Ontario of the 1950s. I found it to be funny, thoughtful and memorable.

Buying Time and Getting by: The Voluntary Simplicity Movement

The Dirty Little Secret of the Voluntary Simplicity Movement
What is the voluntary simplicity movement? Who participates? Why do people join the movement? How do they participate? What has the movement accomplished? Where is it going? Mary Grigsby asks these questions and seeks to answer them in this sociological study.

It's difficult to get a handle on the voluntary simplicity movement because, by its nature as a counterculture, there are no leaders and there is no generally acknowledged definition of the movement, if indeed there is really a movement at all. It is a sort of anarchic trend of downshifting, financial independence, and back-to-the-land. Politically, it embraces bits of socialism, libertarianism, and anti-globalization. Individuals pick and choose the parts of voluntary simplicity that suit them. Some participate in simplicity circles, many don't. Since Grigsby was only able to interview and observe those who participated in simplicity circles, she saw only a sliver of the movement.

What she did see, however, makes for some surprising reading. Although she says, several times, that she is sympathetic to the ideas of voluntary simplicity, and she participated in at least one circle, rather than just observed, she found that as a group, simple-livers are overwhelmingly white, middle-class, and heterosexual. They are mostly middle-aged and have no children, or at least, no children living at home. In other words, this group of anti-establishment pioneers is actually a closed society much like the very people who run things.

Grigsby finds the simple-livers fall into the stereotypes you would expect to find in any other middle-aged, middle-class, white group of North Americans. In simplicity circles, the men tend to take over. Everyone makes excuses for themselves when they don't live up to the expectations they think you have ("I see Costco as a heartless, spiritless, communityless operation, but some things are half-price there.")

The book's conclusion is a comprehensive list of steps the voluntary simplicity movement can take to achieve its goals, for instance, expand the group beyond its heterogeneous boundaries in order to get new input and different ideas on how to make voluntary simplicity work. Grigsby's list is practical and realistic.

Grigsby mentions that this book came out of her work on a dissertation, so there's a fair amount of sociological jargon. Still, it is a readable book on a compelling subject, and she surprised the heck out of me with her findings. It is original and, at times, unexpected. (A comparison of voluntary simplicity with Wicca threw me for a loop until I saw that Grigsby's dissertation advisor has written articles on witchcraft. Aha.)

My favorite part of the was when she got scared thinking someone was trying to break in her house but it was her mom.
