Good but Dated
This is a good book but it is dated. I also purchased "Wine for Dummies" (WfD) by the same authors. I recommend that, instead (not necessary to get both, at least at first). The WfD book has excellent coverages of different countries and that information provides a great deal of groundwork. Only if you know all of that information cold, then consider this book.

Much of the vintage information is dated. The authors mention in WfD that vintage is much less important, yet they refer to it often, as in this book. This is to be expected, but not quite consistent with their theories. That being said, much of the date related information is old -- 5 years is past prime for many wines that we buy for drinking with our dinners. Hence, I think it is dated and it is much better just to refer to WfD.

Good for Beginners
This book is a good companion guide to "Wine for Dummies", with a more precise emphasis (as the title implies) on wine purchase. A wine-food chart is helpful for pairing wine varietals with meals. The book is smaller than "Wine for Dummies," so it can be thought of as a pocket guide that can be brought along on shopping trips. Overall, it is a precise, no-nonsense guide to wine basics. Wonderful for beginners, but probably nothing new to seasoned oenophiles.

Uninformed Senior
I was not a dining out person. Never aquired a knowlege of wines. Or how to order them. Have read pamplets in liquor stores. But still can't pronounce many of the names of wines. I am hoping that Dummys will help me.

Former editor and director of Vintage International Magazine Linda Johnson demystifies how to locate, judge, buy, and age the best wines at optimal times for both the taste and the price. Johnson addresses the growing seasons, vintages, and aging periods for various wines, as well as how to create your own cellar and build your collection of wines, complete with approximate costs. Johnson describes and lists wines that are table-ready and those that require short-, medium-, and long-term storage. Her vivid descriptions of regional favorites, triumphs of particular growing years, how to taste a wine, and how aging changes your wine not only inform but make wine collecting (and enjoying) a historical adventure.

A book for beginners at best
For anyone who has been into wine for more than a month, this book will show you nothing new. I found it interesting that Linda refers to Robert Parker's "The Wine Advocate's Vintage Guide" as one of the best guides she has come across. This is the one peice of advice that I could use. Save the 21.00 you will spend for this book and put that amount towards the purchase of ANY book by Robert Parker.

An author to be reckoned with!
Linda Johnson has the gift of communicating wine in an entertaining and approachable manner. It is obvious that her knowledge of wine is of a technical, traditional and intellectual nature, yet she so passionately and easily conveys this knowledge. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

This lady knows her stuff!
An outstanding read with many interesting and informative details aimed at helping the collector sort their way through the wine-maze. Linda's recommendations on how to stock your cellar are spot on! Worth the money, and more...

Informative, but wordy
Reading this book was much like reading a college textbook. The information therein was helpful, but the style was wordy and technical. The book could have been more concise. As a reference guide, I preferred the book House Buying for Dummies.

Terrific!
A terrific handbook. It gave me all of the information I needed and in a manner that was easy to understand. Highly recommended. I agree with the reader from New York. Decisions like this require expert advice.

Excellent
This book is an excellent overview of a complex subject. Written in a clear, straight-forward style, Smith's book can be an indispensible companion to buying a first or last home. I haven't read the House Buying for Dummies book that was mentioned by an earlier reviewer, but, when I'm confronted with the bigeest purchase of my life, I'd rather stick with someone who has a bit more obvious expertise.

A good book
Out of all the books I have read on this subject, this is one of the better ones. Unfortunately, there needs to be better books on this subject. There is so much left out of all the books I read, that I still didn't have a high level of confidence in making the purchase, and relied a lot on my previous business experience. However, this book did a good job of getting the process started, and sent me in the right direction. I eventually found a business. Someone needs to write a book on all the details to pay attention to in the acquisition process, and why. It would be a good alternative to the expensive price of paying professionals to educate you.

Buy Your Own Business
I found this book very helpful. From a first time business buyer, this book was great. It won't explain how to do every individual thing while searching for a business, but it will point you in the right direction. It was the first book I bought once I started any research, but defenitely not the last.

It's better than nothing . . .
My wife is a Portuguese citizen and although we are currently living in the USA we've made plans to purchase a second home in her native country. This book is good for a basic introduction to the idea of purchasing a home in Portugal, but it really only skims the surface. The main chapters in the book are well laid out, but the narrative seems to lack a continuous flow at times and doesn't do a good job of summarizing key points or explaining the fine details. What the book does best is at least make the reader aware of the many considerations and complex issues (different taxes, different possible ways to arrange for a mortage, etc.) that need to be examined before making a purchase. However, the book doesn't provide enough information on any of these issues for the reader to make any judgements about his own situation. I guess I was hoping the book would be more along the lines of the humbly-entitled but very helpful "Idiots Guide" or "Dummies" series. This book is definitely not along the sames lines as those books. Good news if you're proud of the fact that you're not an idiot, but when it comes to buying a home in Portugal I'll be the first to admit that I AM and idiot, and would like to have things explained to me thus! I also think that my admittedly "American" expectation was that the book would be comparing purchasing a home in Portugal with purchasing a home in the USA. In all fairness to the author, that's not what was stated. The book doesn't directly compare purchasing a home in Portugal to purchasing a home anywhere else, which makes the task of explaining the business of buying a home in Portugal very difficult indeed - the author doesn't share a common frame of reference with the reader. (Though one can definitely tell that the author is from the United Kingdom). Because of the dearth of information available, I am still glad I bought it and can recommend that anyone thinking of making this move read this book. However, I'll still be relying on my wife's in-depth knowledge of Portugal when we do purchase our home there. Best of luck to you!

Quite good to get you started
This was my first guide before I bought a little place in the Algarve. It gave me the essentials and got me started. Then of course you will need a local solicitor, and some are quite fluent in English. This book does not do every thing for you but is very useful.

Understandable primer on ETFs
While I have been following the growth of ETFs for a some time in the financial media, I've been confused about how to select them and why they're sound investment alternatives. This book provided sound discussions about the various funds and why this is a good investment strategy. The charts were helpful and overall this is a very well written investment book

Want to learn more about ETFs?
I did, and I found that this book gave me a clear and comprehensive knowledge base for this new (at least new to me) investment vehicle.

More of a buying guide than a using guide
This book is more of a buying guide than a book on how to use the tools described. If you are looking for information on how to actually use a specific tool then the information given is too short or non-existent.

This book may be useful for somebody new to automotive tools.

Important information not included.
Doesn't refer to an important tool, the P&G Valve Gapper, which is used to assist in adjusting the valve lash.

The Home Inspecton Troubleshooter
This is a great book for prospective homeowners to have not just prior to, and during the home inspection (which, by the way, they should always attend), but before an offer is even made on a property. What I liked most about this book is its organization. Chapter One is a "one-hour" home inspection... a handy checklist of things to look for and a great tool for buyers to use during the looking stage, before they fall in love with a home or property. Not being a contractor or construction expert, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the content, but there is plenty of great information here to raise the necessary red flags at the very first go-through or during the inspection.

As a new real estate agent, I plan on recommending this book to all my clients as a valuable tool for the looking, pre-inspection, inspection stages, when they are doing due diligence prior to signing off on the Agreement of Sale. Rather than being afraid of so-called "deal killers", as many agents are, I believe in arming my clients with the information they need to make intelligent, informed choices in purchasing their property, as any reputable agent should.

I own 2 copies of this book...one is at home and one is at the office...just in case. And, I never loan them out. Buy it, read it, hi-lite it, speak up and and ask questions, and you should have nothing to worry about.
It even has a home maintenance checklist of things to stay on top of after you've moved in.
I hope Robert Irwin has plans to update this edition, and keep writing new edditions so that we can count on having this valuable reference around for a long time.

Home Inspection Troubleshooter
The book provided great hints and advice to a variety of specific home inspection subjects. The book by itself is not or intended as a full do it yourself guide. I purchased this book as a reference and to get additional insight and ideas.

I found it easy to read and very enjoyable.

A good book about the GTO
I like this book, because it tells clearly the history of the GTO, and it's helpful to know the various versions of the car. The main quality of the book is the synthesis, because the author doesn't put in the text an excessive number of facts; he writes only the essential informations to know the car, like the aestetic characteristics, the displacement of the engines, the basic characteristics of the fuel systems and the speed gears, the colours, the codes for the identification and other historical informations. The text is accompanied by a lot of photographs in black and white, that represents the cars and their passenger compartments and engines.
The limitations of the book are the absence of photographs in colour, and the brevity of the technical informations about the cars and the engines.
In spite of these limitations, this book is a good point of departure to know or buy the GTO.

Very Helpful
Being new to the GTO world and living abroad, this book was my only resource in determining authenticity and value. With the help of this book, I was able to make an educated purchase. I recommend it to anyone interested in purchasing a GTO.
