AuctionWatch.com's Official Guide to Online Buying and Selling

"Online auctions are no fad, no fluke, no flash-in-the-pan venture," states Dennis L. Prince, author of AuctionWatch.com's Official Guide to Online Buying and Selling. Indeed, Forrester Research projects that the online-auction industry will grow from $4.5 billion in 1999 to a whopping $19 billion in 2003. For those who are eager to see what the fuss is all about, this book is a great place to start. It provides a ton of information for both buyers and sellers, with tips on auction formats (reserve auctions, Dutch auctions, and so on), authentication, spotting and avoiding fraud, setting up your auction business, creating effective auction listings, dealing with deadbeat bidders, and much more. Of course, there are numerous plugs for AuctionWatch.com's services--"AuctionWatch.com Has More" reminders appear on every other page or so. And, while the prose occasionally gets cheesy ("fast-paced and rapid-fire information is what awaits you in these pages," states Prince), the book is otherwise exceptionally well written and organized, and is a valuable guide for serious online bidders and auctioneers. Included on CD-ROM is AuctionWatch.com's Auction Manager Pro seller application. --Andy Boynton

Get started selling with online auctions!
This book covers all the bases, inculding Terms of Service, Shipping policy, handling payments, dealing with non-paying bidders, and more! It would be an excellent tool for anyone that wants to get started with online auctions.

It is directed more towards the novice seller. Experienced sellers would most likely already know everything in this book. However, all buyers would benefit from reading this book because it would give them an idea of how a good seller should handle thier business.

Terrific read for novice and expert alike!
Being a part time seller on eBay, I found this book rather helpful. It gave great tips on how to deal with comon issues like dealing with a non-paying bidder or a difficult seller. The offline bulk listing tool provided on the CD, is just awesome and definitely a time saver.

decent
I was an auction 'newbie', and this book helped me understand better how online auctions work. It covers things like how to avoid fraud and how to auction so that I make the most money. For example, I learned how to set up email support for all of my bidders, how to authenticate items I'm selling that may be valuable and how to earn a good reputation among bidders.

It helped me as a seller on a very basic level - I didn't know where to begin. The book really helped me create my auctions. For example: what I should include in my listing, the best shipping methods, and how to get an ongoing inventory, etc.

I would recommend this for people like me who want to learn and sell online through auctions - although the language can be a little kitschy at times, it's helpful.

The Buying of the Congress: How Special Interests Have Stolen Your Right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

In The Buying of the Congress, Charles Lewis and his cohorts at the Center for Public Integrity show how powerful industries and people influence our representatives in Washington to pass legislation that helps corporations but hurts regular citizens. They describe how the campaign-finance system and the myriad lobbyists in Washington, D.C., corrupt politicians, or at least make them forget that their primary duty is to protect the interests of the general public. Many readers may already have an inkling that something is awry with our political system; the authors hope that the facts in this book will encourage people to act on those suspicions:
The decisions illuminated in this book all affect our daily lives, and whether or not the current political milieu is appealing to us or the latest ethical imbroglio is surprising to us, the people we elect work for us. They are our employees, and it is up to us to remind them of that.
After outlining the many ways big donors sway the opinions of lawmakers, Lewis explains how that influence affects legislation in several important industries. For instance, because of the financial power of the airlines, airplane seats are not sturdy enough to withstand the force of plane crashes and cause unnecessary deaths; the food we eat is not as safe as it should be because of the inadequate meat-inspection system; and dangerous chemicals and inadequately tested medications remain on the market because powerful companies profit from them. Issue by issue, Lewis and his coauthors demonstrate the links between moneyed interests and bad legislation. The Buying of the Congress is an expertly researched, well-written work of investigative journalism. --Jill Marquis
Average review score:

interesting and inciting, but with substantial flaws
While I agree with the notion that there are likely plenty of congressmen who are "bought off" by special interests with cash-rich lobbies, this book has an obvious statist bias that made it difficult to get through the whole thing.

The book never addresses the fundamental causal issue in judging whether someone has been unduly influenced by a contribution. To wit: How can we tell if 1) a legislator has voted for X because he got money from a group supporting X or 2) if a group supporting X wisely give money to a legislator likely to support X? This may seem trivial, but it is the heart of the matter since the difference determines if a vote was due to conscience or corruption. Compounding the problem, Lewis seems to assume that for every problem, there is a solution in law or regulation that would fix it and anyone opposing that solution is corrupt. What if there are just going to be some dangerous things in life and it isn't the government's job to provide us with an idiot-proof, Nerf world in which to live?

In addition, the book is very politically one-sided in its choice of examples. That is, there are more than a dozen chapters on big corporations with lobbies concerned with environmental laws, FDA regulations, et cetera (and the cliche diatribes against the NRA). But there is no mention of left-leaning groups like AARP, the trial lawyers, trade unions, teachers, et cetera who wield plenty of influence on the Hill. I would never claim that plenty of big companies don't do their best to buy votes, but the focus on traditionally Democratic groups buying legislation is conspicuous in its absence.

On behalf of the book, I will say that *within* any particular arena, the author goes out of his way to point to suspicious activities by both Republicans and Democrats. And, rather than explicitly suggesting new campaign laws, he promotes voter vigilance. Of course the examples cited are very enticing (if inconclusive) and if they prompt people to pay more attention to Congressional goings-on then Lewis will have done everyone a service.

- Mike Brokowski

A Great Read
This is close to being a must read for Americans. While I do think there is some bias in here (It is clear that Lewis is left-wing), his research provided the foundation for some excellent points. Yes, the fact that politicians receive special interest money does not prove that their votes have been bought, but there is definitely a tremendous gray area that results in clear conflicts of interest. Lewis provides many examples within both political parties.

Best of its type. Made my blood boil. And I'm not naive
My topic line says it all. We've all heard and followed the stories about how Congress is beholden to special interests, and how they have in turn done favors for various industries in return. However, this book puts it all together in a way that has really upset me. And yet it is not a sensational cheap book. Per the Acknowledgements section of page 351 ff, it was a huge team project of the Center For Public Integrity involving 10 writers and 25 researchers. And the Center has written and published a number of books during the past 8 years, so they didn't start fresh in researching the topics covered.

Great detail, but not for beginners
I'll agree with some the other reviewers that this book has a lot of valuable information, especially relating to business valuation techniques and contracts and forms. But it's almost too detailed! If you are a first-time buyer and want to get an overview of the process and increase your comfort level, it's practically worthless. In fact, it's worse than that...it will probably scare you away. It's also very densely written and dry in some parts...so it could bore you away too! I'm a first time buyer, and that was my experience -- I absolutely could not get through this book. Then I went on to read Smorenburg, and "Mancuso's Small Business Basics" and things became much clearer. I wish I had started with one of these other books. Then, when you want detailed checklists, legal language, and valuation formulas, turn back to this book (although you'll probably want to turn to an attorney and accountant first).

I've read several on the topic but buy this book
Highly recommended! I have read several books on the topic and have bought/sold my own businesses. This is a very good book, and may be the only one you need to buy (the only other additional book would be a more detailed review on valuation). It is complete, crisp, easy to read, has many good ideas on creative financing, good sample douments, handy checklists etc. I also have read Yegge's book "A Basic Guide on Buying and Selling .." which wanders too much and is verbose - don't buy it. Smorenburg's " Business Buyers Kit" is good, but not as comprehensive as this book.

The only book you need to buy or sell a business
If you are buying or selling a business, or just want to know the value of your company, this is the only book you need. I read several others, but this covers everything they do and in more detail, plus it's all in one book. The purchase agreements are excellent. The book is very detailed. After reading it you know exactly what to do. But I did not find it boring or hard to follow at all.

Not worth reading
Not a good book to read. There are other books that provide useful information but this book had very little good ideas to use. The price is very but that still just justify spending the time to read it due to the lack of help I got from this book. Get something else and don't waste your money.

Thank God for Barry Stone
I bought this book to help through the process of buying a home that I had inspected already but felt as if the inspection wasn't accurate. The inspector found barely anything wrong with the 50 year old home I was buying. I was concerend, especially considering the inspector was a personal friend of my real estate agent. I chose this book over others due to Barry's national status as a columnist and after reading it, I hired my own inspector based upon Barry's insights. What I learned about the home in terms of what had not been disclosed to me was enough to consider action against both my agent and home inspector. Above all else, the old furnace was emitting hazardous fumes into the home. Thank God for Barry and this book.

Fabulous Book
I've been reading Barry Stone's columns in my newspaper for years. As an avid investor in residential propoerties, I have followed Barry's advice with pinpoint accuracy as his advice has kept me from making mistakes that would have cost me a fortune.

I bought his book and have found it to be a remarkable warehouse of information that serves to protect both everyone including the buyers, sellers and even the many real estate agents who in my opinion often lead unknowledged comsumers down the path of home purchase without a clue as to how to protect them from buying a home that could be riddled with defects.

I applaud this book and Barry Stone's continued efforts to place into the marketplace the most sound and sane advice I've read from any home inspection manual.

Handy but limited
As a buyer of several years I found that this book addressed the fundamentals of purchasing quite well but is a bit old-fashioned. Obviously, since it came out in 1992, it does not contain any information about on-line buying and the computer section is rather quaint given today's business practices, software choices and skills. I would recommend it to a for an entry-level purchasing assistant or a junior buyer without formal training. I would be very interested in an updated version of this book.

A book with the good tips.
As a beginner in the field of Purchasing,I found this book very
usefull and full with "gemstones" tips.
The author has alot of experience to share with us,gives us an
ideas what to do,how and why.
My only comment is on the lack of cost analysis examples.

It's a Bullseye!
For anyone facing the duties and responsibilities associated with developing and implementing purchasing procedures, policies, and strategies, this is the book! It is on-point for all issues related to purchasing.

Typical professor-speak BS
I have a degree in Supply Chain Mgmt and I now work as a Supply Chain Consultant for a company in Atlanta. I picked up this book for useful tips and strategy and I was dissapointed with its contents. Its full of professor-speak BS, all the buzzwords and hip MBA slogans, but its short on anything that's practical. I would have enjoyed this book if were still a wet-behind-the-ears undergrad, real world experience makes cute catchprases and lofty anecdotes irrelevant.

Compilation of HBR Articles
Excellent stuff... its just that I didn't realize that it was a compliation of HBR articles (which I already owned).
- Modularity
- Li & Fung Hong Kong
- Chrysler Keiretsu
- Trust in Retail
- The Right Supply Chain
- Make your dealers your partners
- Value chain constellation
- Lean Production

top notch
Once again, HBR has produced an accessible book that highlights the forefront of ideas of the value chain. The best part of books in this series is that you don't have to commit to reading the whole book at one time. You can pick up the book when you have time and read a whole case and feel like you are still able to add to you strategy knowledge.

Inside Outsourcing

Inside Outsourcing - a bible?
I've been involved with outsourcing for just over 2 years - as a customer. I found this book to be extremely well written and structured and would be of benefit to a range of readers, those considering embarking on an Outsource for the first time will get a very clear picture of what they need to consider, and how to aproach the objective. Anyone already involved in outsourcing will recognise many of the items discussed and may find tips that will help them in their role. If nothin else then the survey information will be useful when considering how the services are performing compared to others, as a separate exercise to formal benchmark procedures.

Business Opportunity Waiting For You
Book talks about outsourcing as one of the promising businesses of the future. This is talking about Special Skills needed to manage Strategic Sourcing. It's Like you make non core businesses of others as your core business and put in your best effort in achieving and not only achieving but achieving them efficiently. This book has covered various incidences experienced by US companies. This also highlights that 35% of the such ventures have failed in last eight years which is a shocking statistics. But this is not dicouraging as those ventures failed because they were carried hurriedly and with a very narrow objective. I have found this book worth reading for Persons with an ambition to start their own setup like this.

Packed With Knowledge!
Books that help a business consultant promote consulting can be suspect. After all, the consultants' first piece of advice is that you need to hire them. That caveat aside, you will find this a well-conceived view of the practical mechanics of setting up a good outsourcing program. The text can be redundant, telling you many times over that you need to agree on measures to define a project's success. However, even though authors James Essinger and Charles L. Gay don't dodge all the pitfalls, they do hand you the common-sense fundamentals you need to safely navigate the trendy world of outsourcing. Overall, we [...] recommend this as a useful volume that will help any executive who is thinking of setting up an outsourcing program or wondering how to do it better next time.

Superficial
I found the contents of this book to be very generic and almost superficial. The comments were at times so generic, they were meaningless. If you are a 7th grader "dreaming" of buying a business some day, maybe this book is good enough. If you are serious about buying a business, and want concrete advice, examples and guidance, than look elsewhere. I found BUYOUT, by Rick Rikertsen much more informative; while it dealt with somewhat larger business transactions than most would be involved in, the advice and examples apply to buying any size business. Spend the little extra and get BUYOUT.

Complete, realistic and a requirement for small biz buyers
This is the second book I have read regarding buying a business, and I have found it to be extremely informative whether you are buying a business in the middle market (the market the book covers), or a smaller business. The book covers a methodology to follow, what to expect from a seller, who to get involved, and even has sample forms for your use. In fact, I used the Intent to Purchase agreement in the book for an offer, and was told by my lawyer that it was the most comprehensive he has seen, one he plans to put into his 'Hall of Fame' Folder.

A Great Intro!
I work as a business intermediary assisting clients in both selling and buying their business. I always recommend that first-time business buyers purchase and read this book.

Coffee : a guide to buying, brewing, and enjoying

Coffee is Brown
Coffee is a brown beautiful color.Ink is black set to a white back ground in books for a very good reason. If I had known the printing in this book was a light brown color that is hard to read I would not have wasted my time or money. This may be a very good book but I will never know.Keep the color in the coffee and your hands off the ink.I have the fifth edition.

A great guide, slightly out of date
Through his three books and informative website (...), Ken Davids is a leading expert on coffees of the world. He is also the green bean guru to home coffee roasters everywhere and it is primarily for them this book was designed. For anyone exploring the many pleasures of roasting their own beans, Davids is the only comprehensive guide available, which makes it particularly maddening that the book hasn't been updated in five years. When Davids wrote the book in 1996, home coffee roasting was beginning its rebirth. Today, the sorts of inexpensive, easy-to-use home roasters he long for in the book are finally available but not covered. A quick update could correct information on roaster availability (it's easier than you think, and easier than he says), and sources for unroasted beans (some of his are out of date, and some good ones aren't noted at all). Still, if you want to get started with home roasting, this remains the best book to own. And if you just love coffee, it's a fine second or third book to put on the shelf. But if you love coffee enough to buy a book about it, you really should explore roasting your own beans -- the flavors and fun of it are incomparable.

Duplicating the Coffee Epiphany.
COFFEE : A Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying. Fifth Edition. By Kenneth Davids. 279 pp. New York : St. Martin's Griffin,
2001. ISBN 0-312-24665-X (pbk).

This is a book for those who, after years of slurping what all too often passes for 'coffee,' and what far too many establishments continue to pretend is 'coffee,' have been blessed by a coffee epiphany. It is for those, in other words, who have finally realized what a sensuous, ravishing, and complete experience a perfect cup of _real_ coffee is, and who would like to learn how to duplicate that experience at will in the comfort of their own home. Brewing up a cup of coffee may seem to most of us to be a relatively simple matter, but what we quickly learn from this book is that, far from being simple, selecting the right type, form, and state of coffee and correctly employing the methods that will produce that perfect cup demand real knowledge and skill; we learn, in short, that a true understanding of coffee opens up an area of connoisseurship every bit as big, or even bigger, than that of wine itself.

Davids' book is truly comprehensive. Besides giving us a fairly detailed history of coffee, from its origins in Arabia (or Ethiopia) through to its latest manifestation in the flavored espressos of the modern mall, the book includes chapters on Buying It, Tasting It, Roasting It, Grinding It, Brewing It, and Serving It. Detailed information is given on the special qualities and characteristics of all coffees of the many regions of the world which produce it (Guatemala; Honduras; Costa Rica; Jamaica; Puerto Rico; Haiti; Colombia; Peru; Brazil; Yemen; Ethiopia; Kenya; Uganda; India; Sumatra; Java; New Guinea; Hawaii, etc.), and on the merits and demerits of the many different methods of brewing and the best utensils for each of them (Open-Pot; French Press or Plunger; Drip Brewing (both with and without filters); Flip-Drip or Neapolitan Macchinetta; Pumping Percolator (now passe and the best way to ruin coffee); Filter-Drip, automatic and otherwise; Concentrate; Middle Eastern or Turkish; Soluble or Instant, etc.). There is also a very full discussion of espresso and just why it produces the ultimate cup.

If you are anything like me you'll quickly realize that you have been doing many things wrong and will be seized with the urge, not only to start using better coffee, but also to start brewing it properly. Although acquiring your very own roasting machine or espresso machine may be a little too ambitious for most of us, you may decide that bringing your coffee at least one stage closer to perfection by buying a grinder and grinding the beans yourself is probably a good idea. If you do so decide, Davids will inform you just why a manual is preferable to an electric grinder (it generates less of the heat that disperses the volatile substances that give flavor to coffee), and where you can buy a good grinder if one isn't locally available. His book, besides containing much else (coffee chemistry, maps, photographs, coffee glossary, etc.), concludes with a list of companies which sell a wide range of the best coffees and coffee paraphernalia and equipment.

There are few perfect pleasures in life. Davids is to be thanked for teaching us how not to spoil one of them.

Lacked detailed info
I ordered this book hoping to get detailed info on a number of airplanes. It listed specifications, exterior dimensions, weights and fuel capacities for many aircraft but lacked any real details on individual aircraft models. The Aviation Consumer Guides are better and have more detailed analysis of accidents and aircraft systems. I returned it.

Best in Class
This book would benefit from more photos and specifics on various models but is the best book of its kind. The information found in "the illustrated buyers guide" is a bargain even if you are not serious about buying.

Just the plane facts!
I am new to general aviation and was looking for information about the different types of general aviation planes: what they look like, how they perform, and a ballpark estimate on how much they cost. (I'm not seriously planning to buy one (not yet anyway), but price is a useful piece of information). This book delivers all that.

The book could be improved by providing a few more photographs and by including a few more pieces of data for each plane (e.g., cruising range, ceiling, fuel consumption, Vmc, etc.). Another improvement would be to increase the information in the narratives for each type of plane, better describing flying quirks and typical problems for the purchasers (e.g., expensive ADs, commonly found damage, etc.); detailed narratives like those contained in the dated "Buying and owning your own airplane" by J. E. Ellis would be a benefit. With these few improvements, the book would be perfect.
