Great all around book on horses
I owned this book back when it was first published and the new version is just as good with more updated info such as choosing tack, illness in horses, photos and drawings of what these things look like and detailed info on every aspect of horses and their care. Very good book for a beginner because once read your overall knowledge of horses and their care will be quite good and the type of info you can apply. Also gives you tons of references to organizations, clubs, etc. Great book for horse enthusiasts to own.

Very comprehensive
This is the most comprehensive horse care book I own. I just love this new updated version. I also owned the 1985 edition and this new one has not only updated information, but more information. I highly recommend it to any horse owner or anyone interested in owning a horse (especially good for a first horse owner or lessee).

Horse Ownerhsip 101
If there was an introductory level class for horse owners, The Whole Horse Catalog would be the perfect accompanying textbook. The book surveys all aspects of horse ownership from selecting the horse, stabling the horse, what to feed it, horse health, and so on. It is excellent in explaining horse terms, tack, apparel and events. It describes what all those products you see in the tack store are for. There are lots of diagrams and sidebar-type articles. The coverage is comprehensive. For example, the book even shows and explains the different types of snaps! Other examples: it lists all of the contact information for veterinary colleges. It tells you how to make a muckheap. It shows you different styles of creases on cowboy hats. It explains what TTeam is. It charts the advantages and disadvantages of different material for fences. It tells how to best photograph yor horse. You get the idea? It's like a concise encyclopedia on horses and horse-y things. This book will tell you everything about the horse world you should know, but don't know enough to know to ask.

Wine Savvy: The Simple Guide to Buying and Enjoying Wine Anytime, Anywhere

"There ain't no answer. There ain't going to be any answer. There never has been any answer. That's the answer." It's wonderfully appropriate and telling that this Gertrude Stein quote appears in the pages of Wine Savvy, author Heidi Yorkshire's no-pressure, informative wine primer geared toward grape novitiates who want to build confidence in their taste, "without anyone's opinions or prejudices getting in the way."

Short-listed for the prestigious Julia Child Award for wine/spirits writing, Wine Savvy's 105 large-print pages, divided into 17 chapters, take the beginner through simple tasting exercises, taste-bud "training," even "swirling without spilling." And Yorkshire--who's a teacher, Bon Appetit and Wine Spectator contributor, and wine columnist for The [Portland] Oregonian--proves to be a great, low-key mentoring voice; this is someone who readily admits to barely being able to keep a straight face at her first wine tasting. The book's liberal use of quotes and advice from others in the wine trade is equally inspiring: one "expert" admits that, blindfolded, he couldn't tell the red wine from the white; regarding wine "ratings," another opines "only God knows the difference between an 86 and an 87." Although some information in this revised edition may already be a bit dated, tips such as the two questions that'll make the stuffy sommelier your pal give it lasting value. Wine novices couldn't do much better than having Heidi Yorkshire's book around to offer an encouraging paraphrase of Miss Stein: It'll be all right. There, there. --Tony Mason

Surprisingly Good
Surpisingly good for a book of only about 100 pages. It covers the basics as well as going into detail about the important varietals one needs to know. There were details about ordering at restaurants that I have not seen in books three times the length. Hardly any others have had a how-to on visiting a vineyard and this one was very good. Nice non-intimidating book.

A great, comprehensive book that's easy to read
This book does a great job of explaining the basics of buying and enjoying wine, in ways that are easy for wine beginners to understand. Take the first section on why wines 'taste' differently, based on their aroma. Heidi suggests you try comparing an apple piece to a pear piece with your nose being held. Most people can't tell them apart, because the tongue only tastes basic flavors. The rest comes from your nose.

Heidi further explains how wines can be broken down into pretty basic styles based on tannin, acid, sweetness and alcohol levels. She explains how to run simple taste tests with tea, sugar, lemon juice, and cream to see these differences. Have you felt that you could never understand these "fine distinctions?" Her tests will show you how easy it is, once you know what to look for!

Other sections include how to run a wine tasting, what the various wine varieties taste like, ways to learn how to be better at tasting wines, pairing food and wine, and even how to select wines in stores and in restaurants.

At 110 pages this is a relatively quick read, and the information is well written and helpful. If you're looking to increase your basic knowledge about wine, this might be a place to start!

Great book for wine beginners!
I really enjoyed reading Heidi Yorkshire's Wine Savvy. It's a friendly, straightforward book, and it makes it easy to jump right in and begin to learn about the world of wine. I already thought I knew the basics. Now I can have a conversation with wine-educated friends or the clerk in the local wine store and sound fairly well informed. This is quick and easy reading, and well worth it.

moving doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.........
It was great to come across moving advice just at the right time in my life. I'm a single gal packing it up to try something new. After reading 29 Days to a Smooth Move and realizing I wouldn't have to sacrifice any limbs as collateral to pay for moving expenses, my plans were set in motion. I followed the book's recommendations and saved a considerable amount of money on my move.
And the chapters on saying goodbye- priceless. The suggestions made me think about how i was going to go through with it. The helpful hints made the transition a whole lot easier than i thought it would be. So, if you're planning a move, local or long distance, but might be anxious about all that goes along with the idea, this is a must read!

This book will keep you "moving right along"!
I would have had no idea what I could and could not pack in a moving van if it wasn't for this book! The worst part of moving is cleaning and sorting, and the tips in 29 Days made the process easy and helped keep me on track. I never would have expected it, but this book had me in stitches the whole time, which made moving much more enjoyable. If I ever move again, the first thing I'll do is get out my copy of this book!

A Great Moving Resource
Especially helpful in "29 Days To A Smooth Move" were the chapters about moving pets and getting situated in a new community. Plenty of room and prompts so I could keep my own "to do" lists along side the practical advice. Both the authors survived cross-country moves themselves and tell some funny and informative stories, too.

There is no other book with complete closing information
I read this fine book, that is so correctly titled. This book is "All About Escrow and Real Estate Closing." Every aspect of the closing from pro-ration of taxes, title insurance, holding title, and closing statement are included in this book. In addition there is an appendix which in 1 paragraph for each of the 50 states outlines the settlement procedures in each and every state. There is also 10 pages of blank forms in the back of the book, which are suitable for copying and using. The book is easy to read taking a complicated and foreign subject and breaking it down and explaining it. It comes as no surprise that this book is used by real estate schools and professionals. Every real estate professional should have a copy and read it as well as use it for reference. If you ever had questions about a real estate closing, those questions are probably answered by this book. If you are only ever going to buy one or two properties this book is going to be over kill, but if your plans include buying multiple properties and you are a real estate investor, then this book will be a helpful tool in your real estate toolbox.

The illustrator is Dave Patton, who also did fine work in Leigh Robinson's excellent book "Landlording".

My only reservation is that some aspects of settlement are handled differently in different states and locales, that everything could not be covered in this book. There is no standard for settlements in different states and some states use different documents. Also some states have a simultaneous closing whereas others have the buyer and seller go to settle at different times.

Delivers More Than Promised!
I ordered All About Escrow to explain a few questions I had on closing costs. I was surprised to find that this clearly written book explained to me everything from how to write a purchase agreement, what to look out for, and followed the purchase all the way through to the final closing day. I referred this book to a friend who wanted to purchase a house from a neighbor without using a real estate agent, and All About Escrow detailed exactly how to proceed.

All About Escrow outlines the Who, What, Why, When, and How of any real estate purchase better than most real estate books I have read. It gave me the information I needed. I appreciated the "The Way It Really Is" feature which tells real life stories of a closing and I liked the check lists and what to look for. The book is written in terms which any lay person can understand. The sample forms were very helpful and the State by State Procedures chart is unique. This is one real estate book which delivers more than the title suggests!

Great book. Simplifed the real estate process for me.
This book is fantastic. It really changed the escrow process for me. By simplifing the buying and selling network my escrow went allot easyer. Because of this book I knew which questions to ask and ended up saving allot of money. I would advise to anyone thinking about going through escrow to read this book. It will save you allot of time, energy and expenses.

THIS IS THE ONE TO OWN!
THE BEST BOOK TO OWN. INEXPENSIVE AND PRACTICAL ADVISE ON HOW TO CLEAN AND REPAIR FRAMES,SILVER, BRASS (THE ONLY PLACE I'VE SEEN BRASS CLEANING THAT WORKS) TRUNKS, POTTERY, AND LAMPS. YOU DON'T NEED A WORKSHOP OR ART SUPPLIES TO USE MR. MCKENZIES' RECEIPES FOR REFURBISHMENT OR REPAIR. NO COLORED PICTURES, JUST DRAWINGS, IT'S THE TEXT THATS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE BOOK. IF YOU CAN READ, THINK, AND FOLLOW VERY SIMPLE DIRECTIONS, THEN USE THE PRETTY COFFEE TABLE BOOKS FOR INSPIRATION AND THIS BOOK FOR REALIZATION. I USE IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Easy to do fix it up instructions, also good marketing tips.
This is the most helpful book I've read that in very succinct style tells how to buy, fix up, and possibly resell antiques and other second hand stuff. If you love "shabby chic", but can't afford the prices, this book will make it easier to achieve that look. This book is not for people who worry about getting their hands dirty.

Terrific book on how to fix antiques.
I bought an antique camel-back trunk that needed lots of restoring and didn't know how to start. My friend recommended this book, and I am so glad I bought it. Not only did it give step by step on restoring a trunk but it also had a refrence page on suppliers for trunk parts. I highly recommended this book to anyone who needs to repair trunks, lamps, pottery and frames. The furniture repair section was sort of brief; I would have like to see more on this topic.

WE'LL BE READING MORE OF THIS TYPE OF FICTION IN THE FUTURE!
Is BUYING TIME by Mondo Fax the Singing Judge the sort of fiction we will be reading more and more often in the future? I hope so. Its high time to give up delving into the stale old past. This book is futuristic, well written, insightful, and more than anything very enjoyable. I recommend it warmly.
Gabriel Kune MD

THIS IS A GREAT READ! VERY UNIQUE!
This book was recommended by a friend of mine, and I read it on a plane. I found myself drawn to the crazy plot, and the characters. The fantasy brings home some real issues such as generational bridging, ethnic and cultural diversity, as well as the value of time. It's easy to get through, and left me with a great feeling.

Refrshingly Different
I very much enjoyed the evolution of each one of the characters in the story. Coming from diverse backgrounds, they brought with them individual values specific to their lifestyles.
The writing is engaging, witty, and thought provoking, and the characters relatable.

Many people love the idea of a house full of fresh-cut flowers, but sadly, most have no idea how to select, care for, and arrange flowers, much less grow them. Flowers A to Z is a superb guide for anyone who enjoys flowers and wants to celebrate them in the home or garden. Author Cecelia Heffernan, a floral designer by trade, provides a wealth of information on how to cut, purchase, arrange, care for, and grow all types of flowers.

The book is divided into sections covering everything leading up to a beautiful flower arrangement sitting on your dining room table. It begins with a chapter on hardware, which details all the basic tools--from floral shears to floral wire and tape--that you'll need for cutting and arranging flowers, as well as advice on choosing and caring for vases and other containers. The "Handling Flowers" chapter explains the proper way to cut, condition, and care for flowers to ensure the most attractive and long-lasting arrangements. The author sprinkles valuable tidbits of advice throughout the book. She suggests, for instance, that it is better to use branches or thick foliage as arranging aids instead of floral foam, chicken wire, or other artificial aids, as those can shorten the vase life of flowers significantly. This section concludes with a concise and informative guide to growing flowers in your home garden.

The final section, which makes up the bulk of the book, is an alphabetically arranged guide to flowers from agapanthus to zinnia. Each flower is depicted in a gorgeous full-page photograph, while smaller images show the flowers in different stages of development, illustrating the difference between fresh and older flowers. The informative text is written in a handy reference style, detailing the specifics of each flower: its scientific name, available colors, scent, how long the blooms will last after being cut, relative cost, and other useful information.

The gorgeous photographs, accessible text, and handy cross-referencing will surely inspire many readers to fill their homes and gardens with blossoms. --Robin Donovan

Finally..A fabulous guide for cut flowers
For anyone who enjoys flowers, this book is a must! Full of artfully done full-page color photos, it contains a wealth of information on cut flowers. What I really liked was the types of flowers the author choose to include, hydrangea, fritillaria, peonies as well as many other unique varieties. Very upscale and cutting edge, this is not your run of the mill book on daisies. Each flower contains 2 full pages and includes growing and arranging tips, as well as care and handling. An indispensable reference.

I use this book all the time!
This book is a great resource for anyone with a cutting garden, a love of flowers, or a romantic husband. It's full of great tips for all different types of flowers and has allowed me to increase the longevity of the bouquets I receive.

I liked it so much that I bought one for mother's day.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it shows flowers being cut in air when they should always be cut underwater!

Simply Stunning
Not only is this book packed with the most gorgeous photographs, but also it's also full of practical advice. As the title suggests, it is arranged in alphabetical order so that looking for the flower you are after is quick and easy. Each flower is presented with a double page spread, and includes tips on buying, growing, arranging and cutting. It's an extremely useful reference with information on important flower-related problems such as how to make each flower last longer in the vase, what's poisonous, etc. it even gives you the meaning of flower names. Even if you're not into the practical side of arranging flowers, this book is equally valuable as a stunning coffee table book.

history ????
This book was well worth the money There are some serious mistakes when dealing with history. other then that a very usefull book.

IF ONLY
We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia

Please differentiate between the two Gordon Neales
As the author of this book I would like to point out that I am not the same person as my namesake who writes homoerotic novels such as "To Serve Two Masters". "Buying a House in Italy" belongs to a different genre altogether.
Perhaps Amazon could follow the example of their UK branch and put a C in front of my name on their listing to differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
The mortgage maze can rapidly become confusing, especially if you are a first time buyer. This clearly written and informative book walks you through every step of the process, providing detailed information on the dizzying aray of loans that most lenders offer; more importantly, it tells you how to appraise each lender so that you reallly do get the best deal. In real estate and lending today, "caveat emptor"--let the buyer beware--is truer than ever, and books like this one are more needed than ever. Katherine Salant, Nationally syndicated real estate columnist for Inman News Features

Book Pioneers New Philosophy: Real Estate Consumer Advocacy
Books on buying and selling real estate abound, but it is truly rare to read a real estate book that breaks new ground -- or indeed, pioneers a new philosophy and launches a new movement: real estate as consumer advocacy. This seminal work, authored by real estate sales and financing experts Patricia Boyd and Lonny Coffey, sounds the clarion call to buyers and sellers -- as well as to real estate brokers, mortgage lenders and other service providers --for a new consumer orientation in real estate transactions. As the authors note, real estate transactions have heretofore been treated as the selling of a product, whether the product be the property itself or the mortgage loan that finances it. The historical focus has, therefore, been on salesmanship: getting the property sold or the loan made. Lacking in this focus has been the interests of the real estate consumer -- the buyer or the seller. This book introduces something new and something revoluntionary into the world of real estate transactions: a view of the buying or selling of real estate as a "consumer-driven" process, of buyers and sellers as informed consumers, and of real estate brokers and mortgage lenders as consumer advocates. The book serves as a road map for buyers and sellers who want to participate actively and intelligently in their realty transactions... and who want to stop getting "ripped off" by brokers, lenders and other service providers who put their own interests ahead of the consumer's interests. Just as importantly, the book shows real estate brokers and mortgage lenders how to work with this dawning new world of informed consumers -- not in the old way as salesmen, but rather as professional consumer advocates. It is the twin goal of the book, one it certainly attains, of educating real estate buyers and sellers how to be informed consumers and also training brokers, lenders and service providers as to how to be their advocates. Patricia Boyd brings vast experience as a top-producing real estate broker, real estate trainer and instructor and Certified Finance Specialist, to produce a practical, well-written and inspiring book that may well launch a new way of buying and selling real estate. As a former real estate broker with a number of professional Realtor designations (ABR, CIPS, CRB, CRS, and GRI), and now as a real estate attorney actively advocating the interests of buyer and seller clients, I applaud this book as the herald of a new real estate consumer revolution.
