Strong Projects- Weak Instruction
I bought this book solely to build the adirondack chair which I recently finished. Lots of Cut List info makes buying the lumber easy. However, once into a project the pictures/illustrations and descriptions of precise placement of key parts leaves much to be desired. I have built several other chairs from different plans and based on this experience, I sadly cannot recommend this book.

A wonderful variety of outdoor furniture styles.
Within an hour of receiving this book, I was on my way to the shop! Hylton has combined a great collection of projects that cover a nice variety of outdoor sytles, with hints that make the construction and finishing process easier. If I could make this book perfect, I would have included a few more details, drawings and measurements, but with some practical math application, you get exactly what you need. The best part is that you don't need a dedicated shop to produce fine results. Ah, those of us with the handheld powertools can rejoice.

Practice of Architecture and the Builder's Guide: Two Pattern Books of American Classical Architecture
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (April, 1994)
Authors: Asher Benjamin and Thomas G. Smith
Amazon base price: $19.95

Not as expected
This book has a 20 page introduction on Asher and then about then about 20 pages of picutures and drawings. The rest of the pages are copies of two books written in ancient english that is very hard to understand even for an engineer. The drawings included are mostly cross sections of moldings, pillars and some truss diagrams (the truss section was interesting). It the kind of book you would thumb thru and say that is sorta interesting and then never pick it up again. I am returning it.

Excellent presentation of a historical curiousity.
..., this book is not intended to be a current architectural resource.

It is a presentation, for research purposes, of two books that at one time served as the 'conceptual' blueprint of house building in the cities of America.

The introduction is clear and to the point, and the layout of the books well-handled.

I recommed this book to anyone interested in the history of architecture in America; I cannot recommed it as a practical builder's guide.

a complete criticism of the egytian beliefs& traditions
THIS BOOK IS A FARCE-IT COMPLETELY RUINS ALL BELIEFS ABOUT,AND THEORIES ON,THE TYPICAL DAILY LIFE OF ANCIENT EGYPT.IT IS A RUTHLESS ATTACK ON THE CONCRETELY DISCOVERED FACTS ABOUT THE ANCIENT WORLD.NOT WORTH PRINTING,LET ALONE READING.

accurately presents life around Egypt's pyramid workers
This is the story of the first pyramid workmen's town, a fascinating story for those who want to know more about Ancient Egypt's everyday life. The image of the 'whip-driven slave' is replaced by skilled workers who worry about normal everyday problems such as family, food and work conditions. Sure, the pyramids were made by very special people, but no, these people were not mysterious aliens. This study helps humanize the Ancient Egyptians.

The American Builder's Companion (The Works Of Asher Benjamin) (# X0946)

Good historic resource
This is an early pattern book that was in circulation during the mid and late 1800's. It is good only as a historic resource for those wishing to further their studies in American architecture. It is not a practical book for a practicing architect, builder, or restoration buff. The plates are beautiful and the descriptive geometry is fascinating.

A lovingly made record of a limited subject
This volume includes scores of carefully recorded examples of brick paving patterns from a variety of early American sites, predominately Colonial Williamsburg (Va.). There is also a glossary of paving terms and a few illustrations of standard early tools and techniques. The chief value in the body of the collection is as an archive, but that value is limited by the scarcity of contextual information (dates, exact locations, first occurences, materials, etc.) The focus, instead, is first on the idealized delineation of paving patterns (none of which would be terribly difficult to reinvent if the source was not at issue) and, more effectively on the aesthetics of book design. This book is the product of a real devotion to bookmaking and recording, which I admire greatly. The binding and end-papers are very handsome. The use of antique type is of antiquarian interest (however, the use of antique spelling and usage is less captivating to me)

In summary, this is a lovely volume to own; but its usefulness as a pattern-book is limited by its scope and methodology. I would recommend it as a supplement to a broader and more detailed collection, especially for the admirer of the book-maker's art.

General Information
For a person interested in Underground homes this book will give you a general introduction into some of the different techniques with this style of building. There are better books out there. If your really interested in Underground building it is best to read all the different ones you can get your hands on before you build. I would have liked to see some more photo's of completed projects in this book.

great book for a new Mason
This is a great book for a new (or old) Master Mason to read. Joeseph Fort Newton designed this book for new Master Masons under the Grand Lodge of Iowa - but it is in no way specific to Iowa.

Unweildy but informative
This book has a lot of historical details which can be a little daunting on the first read. It describes several initiation acts and, more especially, the rites involved in erecting buildings (and their importance). Anyone familiar with a Kenninger book will know the format: words squished together, few paragraphs, etc. It's a typical format for this type of book but it's difficult to read. The information was good, but I also expected a lot more - I wanted a lot more on all the rites, not simply the ones during the erection of the building's foundations.

quite enriching to those who have been enrolled or going to
At the first glance, the flow is too hard to digest. Yet, as it develops, it does reveal something that the norm of the B-school won't share with the newcomer. Perhaps, it is the plus of J.Paul Mark who did an investigation of the world renowned faculty and the unavoidable hurdles facing a B-school. To the freshman or the business circle, it is also a cryout of the ivory tower reminding us to position ourselves in this dynamic capitalism no matter one agrees with Paul or not.A must see for those who are enrolled or engaged.

A Good Introduction
A good introduction to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The book focuses primarily on Wright's residential work ("Fallingwater" is included), though there are a few churches, a civic center, and of course, the Guggenheim Museum. The photographs are terrific, but the writing is, while eloquent, nevertheless a bit lacking; one gets the impression the poor writer was hired merely to wrap words around the pretty pictures. Still, if you're new to the work of this masterful, prolific artist (as I am), this book serves as a good introduction.
