Look elsewhere for a good 'How To' manual for C++ BuilderIt's obvious that one of the coauthors, Jeff Duntemann, is not familiar with the C++ programming language. Examples: (1) The sprintf function he twice claims is part of the C++ library. ( It's in the C library ) (2) Use of the static modifier to hide functions instead of using private member access specifier. ( Static functions are used to access static data members. Static variables are contained in classes only, and not duplicated in the class's object ). Both authors use terminology before they define the terms, e.g. using the name of a saved file before they instruct to save the file. There's more but space does not allow. This book is better than nothing but other texts will take you further, faster.
Humorous prose but too elementary and too many errorsThis book should be read while one is on a vacation. There are too much narrations that seem to be off topic. It does not cover enough topics for either beginning programmers or professional ones. There are many errors. The main one is the mortgage example codes. Try running it with mort amt of 100000, int 8.05% and periods of 180 and you get a junk row at the end of the string grid. The destructor call delete Mortgage w/o freeing the individual pointers, in this case, Items. One call to GetStringForm() passes parameters using commas instead of an array. The common dialog example forgets to show the code to execute the printer setup dialog. You'll have to peek at the CDROM source to follow along in some of the chapters. Type conversion or casting did not get proper treatment. It should note dynamic_cast and reinterpret_cast are C++ casting style for polymorphic behavior and should explain the difference between the two. The first illustration for the first chapter is WRONG! (What a way to start a chapter.) The mortgage chapter is peppered with Pascal-style comments. It even asks you to include SysUtils unit in your interface section, ha!
On the plus side, the book is fun to read. The explanation is clear making it very readable. It will get you started, but you cannot live with this book alone--by far.
Excellent and very accurateIf you really want to learn, you must have this book. From simple examples to complex ones with full explanation of everything. Tips are available about what to do, and how to do it better. All explanations are done in simple English without too much complexity. I recommend it if you want to learn quickly+

Reasonable intro.... NOT "High Performance"If you're looking for in-depth advanced information on Borland C++ Builder, skip this book.
It seems to be a reasonable introduction, but that's it.
"High Performance"? I don't think so.
I'm satisfiedThis book is a mix between simple to advanced topics. You must have at least a little bit of experience with the C++Builder, to understand the examples. I really liked a lot that the author explained what it is happening, not like other books that you have to read the examples an figure it out, what some things are for. The narrative is simple, so it is easy to read and follow. Examples are clear, and they work like are supposed to. For beginners and intermediate users it is a great book, because there are many things to learn. I recommend it to have it.
Excellent book with many examples for an excellent RAD toolI have bought all C++Builder books because I'm making a point of not falling behind this time. I started programming in 1981 but I took too long to make the transition from DOS to Windows, so I skipped the Win3.1 and moved directly to Win95/NT. After spending close to $2000 to try all compilers and RAD tools (VB, Visual C++, PowerBuilder, Optima++, etc.) I found the C++ Builder to be the best on all fronts - fast, robust, single executables, event-driven and easy to program. The High Performance Borland C++ Builder book by Matt Telles has many good examples and it reads well. This book is not a encyclopedia for C++Builder but it covers the bulk of the language with meaningful and functional examples.

Too much of too littleI genuinely wanted to like this book, but I found the author attempted to cover too many topics in too little detail. Texts on general construction materials and methods contain greater depth and detail than this book, and yet are written for the same audience (builders and 2 yr. degreed designers). Especially thin is the discussion and illustration of reinforcement, and this to me is the most complicated and important aspect of concrete next to quality control. I found the chapters on concrete in my old construction technology text to be much more useful.
Engineering Information on a Builder's Level.I thought that a book on concrete engineering would be complicated and way over my head. But I was delightfully surprised with Basic Concrete Engineering. The clear instructions, and simplified explanations along with excellent diagrams, charts and graphics helped even me comprehend the complexities of concrete engineering into a language that any builder could understand and actually apply on the next job. I especially enjoyed the design errors as we had been building that way for years.
The software was a bit over my head but the information in the book was useful and practical.

A simple book that fails to cover a complex topic. This book falls into the category of "rush to market" to take advantage of the heavy advertising and good publicity associated with the Borland C++ Builder software. As such, it is a superficial treatise on the Windows 95 programming concept in that it offers only a step-by-step method of moving a visual component from a component bar to a form window, followed by a click or two on a component pallette and the entry of a trivial piece of real code. One ends up with a real window after the compilation step, but no concept of the logic of what they did or how they could add something useful to this trivia. The situation deteriorates when the topics turn to Quick Report generation and "Advanced" programming concepts. The Quick Report presentation was essentially the Qrmanual.doc (supplied as part of the Builder package by QuSoft AS ) stripped of most of its logic content. Some of the table presentation was lifted from Qrmanual.doc with so few words changed that there should have been an acknowledgment to QuSoft AS !! The "Advanced" programming pages presented only a very basic, broad description of some of the C++ operators, with no description of what they really do or how they tie together. As with most computer books rushed to print, there were several typographical errors ( leading to compiler errors ); one associated with a pointer syntax error, another with a missing label component in one piece of code devoted to a timer window. There was even an incorrect syntax presentation for the unary decrement operator in one of the tables associated with learning C++ !! Some of the "for Dummies" series of books have served their readers well in easing the transition to a new piece of software developed for the public at large. However, the Borland Builder program is software aimed at Windows 95 Application Software Development by people familiar with the Windows 95 messaging system, the Borland OWL and advanced C++ programming concepts. The subject book does nothing to help the beginning reader achieve this familiarity, and trivializes the knowledge base of those people who have already gained it.
The Best book for C++ Builder (for beginner)As new C++ developer in Borland environment, I have checked all the books on C++ Builder. This book is the best one who is new in developing application using C++ Builder. I will recommend this book to those who are new and want to learn all fundamental aspects.

A long fan letter, not a biographyWritten by R.K. Johnson, personal friend of Bob Jones, Sr. and in the employ of Bob Jones University at the time this book was first published, this hack job is anything but objective. Bob Sr. walks on water on every page.
Still, page 138 is a hoot, because the good reverend's own cheerleader confesses that Bob had a soft spot in his heart for the Ku Klux Klan!
Great Biography about a Great Man of GodThis book is truly a great biography of Bob Jones, Sr. The fact is the Ku Klux Klan happened to be a religious organization, not a racist organization when it first started. If you have your facts straight things can be looked at in such a better light.
Bob Jones wasn't a perfect man, but he surely was a man of God.

Overpriced and small.Half of this book is about basics of the Excel program. Very little is about real estimating and working out profit and loss. If you were to use the markups described in this book, you would lose money. A better title for this book would be " Introductry estimating with Excel"...
I thought it was very goodAfter reading, and practicing with this book, I have built a database where I can change prices to reflect the current market, and estimate jobs quickly and efficiently. There is a lot of information on how to set this up in Excel. Now I don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on an estimating program. This book assumes you are familiar with construction, but unfamiliar with microsoft excel. This book will save you time and money in the long run.

Ford Flathead Builders HandbookI believe that the Title of this book should be "Ford Flathead Builders Handbook 1932-1953" not 1932-1958. Jay Smith

pritty poor!Ok, i started bass and i got this book, it is not worth buying! under any circumstances! it walks you though laim exercises, and has about 5 pages on the same scale (major) just in different keys! this is a very very poor book!
Great all around bass bookAs a guitarist picking up the bass, this is a very well paced book.
After going over some basics and hand strengthening exercises he starts on the grooves. Some are easy, but most are very challenging. The cd quailty could be a little better... but does the job. If you like Earth Wind and Fire's music.. get this book!

I agree -- this volume is a let-down for a good seriesThis is not the best book, and I had to force myself to finish it. But WHY, you may ask, did I force myself? Because I had so much enjoyed the earlier books in the series dealing with the same main character, Lafayette O'Leary. Omigoodness -- read "World Shuffler" and "Time Bender" -- they are worth it. Read this book if you NEED to know more about Lafayette and if you have an ability to push through books no matter what.
Poor addition to the series.Continuation of the Time Bender series with Lafayette O'Leary wandering helplessly through his own delusions helped by a limited cast. Lacks the spontaneity & elan of the earlier books & meanders to a predictable & uninspiring conclusion. Don't read if you wish to preserve the flavour of the other novels.

Modern is relativeI build Stairs and balustrades and this book has only theoretical application. It was modern when written in 1902. Stairs have changed a lot in construction techniques since 1902...Modern is only relative.
No KiddingOf course "Modern is only relative", and I don't know what else anyone should expect from a circa 1932 reprinted book. As if that shouldn't be enough, the editors include a new warning about safety and code compliance. If you want to build modern, I suppose you could buy one of those 'do it yourself' sunset books at the checkstand at home depot. If you would like to see how things were done in the days when cheap, shoddy and uninspired WASN'T the order of the day, this (for stairs anyway) may be your book.
