Somwhat useful but limited
The book's major strength is that it gives specific wording to put into your contract that will try to ensure a healthy house. But some contractors will take one look at these specs and laugh "yeah, right!" Overall, I recommend John Bower's book "The Healthy House" over this one because it covers more topics and gives much more information.

This is the one!
The new edition of "Prescriptions" is the most complete of any book about Healthy Homes/Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The combination of architect/doctor/building specialist as authors works very well.

The information is thorough and well documented. They can back up what they say. It is very well organized.

As a Home Builder, I find this to be the best resource available on MCS. On the down side, it is a little bit of a dry read.

A must read for keeping you and your family healthy....
If you want to stay healthy or have any health challenges, you should read this book. I recommend the book to most all of my patients. It is complete on what are the best products to use in your home to keep from making you ill.If you are building, or remodeling, this book will assist you in making healthier choices. The 3 writers should be congratulated for their extensive resource lists and efforts they put into the life saving information in their book.

Stilted dialogue, one-dimensional characters
I could not finish this book. Unlike the other reviewers, I was not the least bit impressed by the quality of the writing. The dialogue was stilted and the characters were one-dimensional. Save your money. Read Mike Tidwell's Ponds of Kalambayi if you're interested in a Peace Corps novel set in Africa. Tidwell's book is everything that The Road Builder is not.

A Keeper
I spent three years in the Congo. This book brought back so many memories, feelings, even smells to me. Although fiction, it is the book I fantasized about writing-- a personal journey, stories of realities of life in Africa now, an inside look at attempts by outsiders to do "development," and a romance to boot! Most of all I appreciated the honesty of Will's internal workings. I laughed a lot, too. I loved this book.

Deeply and wonderfully evocative
I am currently right in the middle of this beautiful novel and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. It's a pure pleasure to read: the writing itself is so sensuous, flowing over page after page of reflections and descriptions. The author does a great job of giving the reader a sense of what it is like to be in a remote part of central Africa - after all, he was in the Peace Corps in Zaire ( now it is called Congo, as it was before it was Zaire ) back in the 80s, and I was there in 1983 myself. Eighteen years ago, and yet the language of this novel brings back all these memories! Wow! That's the power of books for you! The story he tells here is powerful as well; I could really relate to Will, the main character. I am reading this book slowly, savoring the beauty of the language and the gentle unfolding of the story. It is one of those novels you wish would go on forever - and in a way it does in its timelessness, its universality of meaning. I hope this book sells well; I can't recommend it enough!

a bit disappointing...
I was hoping that this book would have more tabular data and formulas for calculating required structural members; instead it outlined basic components of materials of construction (i should hope we don't need an engineer to tell us things are made of wood & steel!) but did not get down how to solve problems. When I saw the author makes his living testifying against people, my heart sank.

This is a tool but can lead to trouble...
I purchased this manual for two reasons: 1-The author had a credible level of experience and, 2-I was Project Engineer on a wood frame structure where I had no or limited experience. Mr. Schwartz presents the often technical material in a very non-threatening manner. It is relatively easy to follow and someone with some construction industry background could find the references useful. I would caution individuals that changing a design without the engineer's stamp invites significant liability. Claims could abound if some structural members were resized for static loads and not checked dynamically, for instance. Also, experience teaches economical design but if one might get the impression that bigger is better or smaller is more economical-disaster looms! This should not be used in lieu of qualified, registered engineers working within their field of expertise. It seems jaded, but a few hundred spent on a redesign check and stamp could save thousands later. I would not hesitate recommending this manual to Engineer Trainee's or fellow PE's as a quick reference-I would never suggest this to a contractor. In my state, design or analysis (the independent practice of engineering) without proper education and state examination is a felony! With all due respect to Mr. Schwartz, please be honest with your educational level and experience before over extending yourself or your business.

Great Book for understanding basic engineering
With this book I was able to understand and show my remodeling contractor what size footings our addition required for the soil we were building on. We had a difference of opinion. But after reading this book he agreed with me.

Perhaps more accurately, Mid-Coast Maine Lobsterboats
I wish the author had spent more time to the east of Penobscot Bay. With her repeated references to the designers and builders of Beals Island and Jonesport, I felt she should have spent more time there than she did. Interestingly, the oft heard complaint about the impact the modern, fast designs have had on the traditional good looks of the Maine lobsterboat seem to have come from those designers and builders whose boats don't make the "cut" at the seven-event lobsterboat race series held though out the summer along the Maine coast.

A better read than expected but not as complete as I'd hoped for.

A rich collection of commentary on Maine Lobsterboats.
Thorndike has assembled a thoroughly engrossing collection of solid information, individual viewpoints, opinions and tall tales about the Maine lobsterboat told in their own words by the people who know and love them best. Each interview unveils the character of the individual as well as the boats they talk about. Downeast life on the water comes alive in the droll understated humor that is their characteristic means of expression. The book is pure pleasure.

Entertaining
Informative and entertaining with local flavor from the men who build lobsterboats and fish them. Enjoyed it.

Learning Oracle Form Builder 5.0 (Learning Oracle)

good for Oracle' student
Easy reading. Can go through in couple a days. I would recommend this book as one you should start with. The book covers basic principles of Forms 5.0 . Get your foundations in Oracle 7.x , 8.x before start reading this book.

First Reviewer
I notice that the first reviewer thought that this book is about Forms 5.0. No wonder he gave it such a low rating. I would give it Zilch for that product!

But, as for Reports 3.0, which the book is ostensibly and actually about, I would say that it is a good step by step introduction to the five basic types of reports and the interactivity of the Oracle Developer tools which will help to produce them. An excellent hands on intro.

Introduction to the built-up ship model
Detailed sequential instruction on constructing the built-up ship model. Accurate lists of the various countries' mast rules, including tops, heads, trestletrees etc, and rope & block dimensions, ensure that your model will look like the real thing and not a misproportioned eyesore.
There are lots of hints and tips to making the rigging and the ground tackle (capstans, bitts, winches, anchors) look real, including correct proportions of gunports.

The book does assume that you have an accurate drawing to work from and with this in mind it is a welcome addition to anyone's library. My only complaints are that there should be more detail on planking, and some of the drawings are a tad small, obscuring the detail.

The Second Book Of The Ship Modeling Foundation
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is due to the dated writing, which is sometimes distracting. If not for that, it's 5 stars!!

A must for you if you're just beginning, like me. The author explains everything very well. Not only how things work, but why they work. His specifics about construction are excellent, if only for those who are curious about sailing vessels. His charts are wonderful for answering questions about construction and cutting before the cut is made. He really gets down to the nuts and bolts.

I don't agree that this book is not for the beginner. I'm a beginner, and I have learned much from this book, and continue to reinforce that knowledge with the book. If you be a beginning builder, a student of sailing vessels, or just plain curious about the subject, get this book. Remember, it reads a bit differently then more current books, but you'll smile at that fact, and get the benefit of the knowledge imparted within.

Great Reference Work
After initial chapters on varying types of ship models, including the built-up model and wooden-sail models, the author devotes individual chapters to the masting of ships, mastheads, the standing rigging, the running rigging, foot-ropes, the blocks, steering wheels, the ship's galley, pumps, ship ironwork, copper sheathing, the ground tackle, gun ports, boats and davits. He includes as well invaluable tables and lists of data that offer opportunities to compare vital statistics on rigging, masting and more.

Charles C. Davis was a well-known naval architect, shipbuilder, master seaman, racing yachtsman and nautical chronicler. His lifelong love affair with the great ships of the past resulted in several classic works on ships and ship model building. The present volume is one of the latter, an extremely thorough, practical and readable guide to building ship models in authentic detail and in proper proportion. In all, The Ship Model Builder's Assistant offers a treasury of both descriptive and "how-to" information essential to model builders and highly enlightening for all fascinated by the great sailing ships of America's past.

Not Linda Chaikin's best
Linda Chaikin is my favorite author, but this is definitely not her best book. It is pretty boring, and the characters are frustrating. If you read this book, don't decide to not read her other books! Monday's Child and Tuesday's Child are far better. So is Arabian Winds, Lions of the Desert, and Valiant Hearts.

Enjoyable, entertaining and insightful.
This is another fantastic book from Ms Chaikin. As an Australian, I found the history interesting and easy to read, while enjoying the exciting adventures of Tavish Wilder. The romance between Tavish and Ember Ridgeway added an extra touch that complemented the christian ideals portrayed. Another Winner!

A riveting story about revenge and the love of God.
I loved this book! This definitely deserves 5 stars!! I wasn't disappointed in this book. Ember Ridgeway is a spoiled niece of railroad tycoon Mack Ridgeway. Orphaned at a young age and surrounded by luxury, but also with a loneliness that cannot by filled by anyone. Then Tavish Wilder comes into her life and Ember's desires became the things that her uncle's money can't buy. Tavish has an ambition to rise to the top to take on the Ridgeways. Tavish also has a vengeful agenda: to bring to justice the people responsible for his father's death and for stealing his land. But when Ember falls for him, he is torn between revenge and winning Ember's trust and love. A great story on the time of Indian wars, claim disputes, revenge, love and forgiveness in the lovely and rugged Pacific Northwest. This book was well-written on how God's love and grace could help you forgive your enemies. I definitely will read this book more than once. This book deserved the Angel Award of Excellence!

wanders all over the place!
If you want to read about politics, but a book on politics. If you want tread about hidden cities/ mound builders buy another book. Too much political wandering throught the 1700's and 1800's and too little about hidden cities.

The Denial of Ancient America
Here we have yet another piece of history that's been ritually ignored by the arbiters of society and which desperately needs to be taught in American history classes. People nowadays know little about history anyway, but the material in Kennedy's book is one of the first lessons they should learn (One of the central themes of his book--the denial of marginalized people's beliefs and achievements--is also found in Howard Zinn's classic, A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES). While I agree that he could have gone deeper into the actual culture and practices of the people who built Cahokia, Poverty Point, Moundville, and Etowah, he did a first-class job of rendering the conflicts at the highest level over whether we were a solely European (Anglo-Saxon) or multicultural civilization. I sincerely hope that at this point we've decided to choose the latter.

Excellent book on the Mound Builders
An amazing book about a lost era of American history. Probably one of the best books written on the Mound Builders. While very well documented and footnoted, the book could use more illustrations and maps. Of course to call them "Mound Builders" is not entirely accurate, as they built more than mounds. Pyramids, platforms, circles, squares, cones, octagons, and fortresses. Whoever these mysterious people were, they had a great knowledge of astronomy and geometry to construct what they did, from the Ohio valley to Florida. Many of the sites are lost to time, but there are state parks that do preserve these ancient works. Here we have a lost civilization as great as the Maya--right here in North America!

A good book
a good way to kick start your vocabulary.

Good deal!
I am a returning student (about to enter graduate school). We are required to take the GRE. This book was a very helpful refresher for me, and you can't beat the price. Service was quick and helpful too!

Easy to use
The way this workbook had me actually using vocabulary, rather than just studying lists of words, helped to firmly "plant" these words and their definitions in my mind. By following the instructions to write synonyms, antonyms and sentences using each vocabulary word, without a doubt, has been the strongest tool that I have found to increase my test score.
