Tesla Coil Builder's Guide to the Colorado Springs Notes of Nikola Tesla
Published in Spiral-bound by Twenty First Century Books (June, 1994)
Author: Richard L. Hull
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

No-Nonsense explanation of what Tesla really did in CS!
Richard has really outdone himself this time! The guide the the Colorado Springs Notes is a compehensive explanation of the day-to-day happenings is Nikola Tesla's Colorado Springs Laboratory. This book cuts through all the hype and myth and takes a more objective and scientific look. Unlike other books, that claim terrifying lightning discharges along with wireless power and spaceships, Hull's book conveyes the truth. It is all very down to earth and believable, all of the author's statements are based on fact, not wild-eyed speculation. The guide contains a wealth of invaluable information on synergistic coil building techniques which are so many times overlooked or neglected by the hobbyist who wants a fool proof "recipe". This guide is written with a very human touch, so don't about being bored by too much dry, raw data. Even if you don't own the notes, this book is a must have for any coiler or Teslaphile alike. This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Tomb Builders of the Pharaohs
Published in Paperback by British Museum Press (1998)

An Excellent history of a little known group of Egyptians
The valley of the Kings in Egypt has enticed numerous archeologists in search of the burial sites of the Pharoahs. These remarkable tombs were built by skilled workers who had a special city built for them and their families. Mr. Bierbrier has researched and done a scholarly work about these workers and their day to day lives. We learn that the more things change, the more they stay the same, as the same day to day and family problems that we have today are very much the same as those who lived 3,000 years ago. It is certainly a distant mirror and one that students of Egypt will enjoy. It is well written and I am particularly proud of this book as Mr. Bierbrier is a cousin of mine. This however did not affect my opinion of this fine work.

An excellent guide for vacationers & amateur archaeologists
James L. Theler (Professor of Archaeology, Department of Sociology and Archaeology, University of Wisconsin La Crosse) and Robert F. Boszhardt (Associate Director of the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, Univ. of Wisconsin - La Crosse) are veteran archaeologists with more than twenty years experience in the field. Twelve Millennia: Archaeology Of The Upper Mississippi River Valley is a collaboratively written and thoroughly engaging overview of the Driftless region of the Upper Mississippi River Valley, featuring its ecological evolution throughout prehistory, as well as catalogs of animal remains and Native American rock art that can be found in the valley today. An excellent guide for vacationers and amateur archaeologists wanting background information for an area that roughly extends from Dubuque, Iowa to Red Wing, Minnesota, Twelve Millennia is a welcome and scholarly contribution to regional academic Archeology Studies reference collections and student reading lists.

value seekers
This book has been wonderful for our Christian Sunday School. Our students range fron ages 6-10. The content is easily adapted for all children in the age range and our teachers have been very excited. What an opportunity to teach values based on biblical principles. The book allows three weeks to study and learn each memory verse and has great Power Pages to send home when class is over. This allows parents to be involved with their children, taking God's word home to their families to be discussed during the week. Our Pastor has been so inspired by the curriculum that he is thinking of basing his sermons on the lessons for the next 8 weeks! I recommend this book highly for people who are interested in teaching their children biblical values.

An Inspiration & Insight into the Joy of Productive Drafting
25 years ago this book inspired me to write my own schedule & progess graph. When I had finished my first job using his ideas, I thought "Finished already - can't be!" But it was! Now into CAD I was hoping he had written an update. He made drafting productive, satisfying and profitable.

Borland C++ Builder: the Definitive C++ Builder Problem Solver
Published in Paperback by Waite Group Press (17 June, 1997)
Authors: John Miano, Thomas Cabanski, and Harold Howe
Amazon base price: $49.99
Average review score:

Good Examples but...
The book should have been titled "Advanced Windows API How-To using C++ Builder" or something else more appropriate. The examples are good but complex. If you're a novice with CPPB this book will be totally useless to you.

You must have a previous knowledge about the Windows32 API
Personally I have bought many books about C++ Builder and this one interested me a lot. I really consider this book a reference one, not one for learning the programming aspects of C++ Builder. Most of the examples perform wonderful things, but they are done using a very low level API programming with the aid of the VCL components. Examples are very specific to accomplish a single thing like morphing an image to another or making a little animation inside the form's caption (believe it, it's possible). You have the source code there, but unless you understand the API, you will take things explained there by faith. If you are a beginner, wait some time to buy this book, if you are an expert go ahead and buy it

Wish every software would have such a how to book
Not many books are available for Borland C++ Builder (compared to MS Visual C++ and MFC). And as there's not so much to choose from, one has to be happy with what exists.

This book has an interesting form that I personally didn't find in other computer software related books - it's divided into problems and answers. Each problem-answer consists of a question, exact programming steps to solution and explanation of the solution.

The book covers many programming topics, like forms, windows controls, internet, database, custom controls, etc., etc. All solutions are presented in such way that you can freely combine them together. You just implement all that would suit your particular needs in your projects. The book is well structured, so you can find what you're looking for easily.

I find the book VERY readable and easy to understand (I have 2 years of Visual C++ and MFC programming practice and have recently switched to BCB) and I find myself browsing through the pages just reading the contents "offline" many times. And every time I run into something cool, something that will just have to be implemented in my next project...

There are few examples, where not all code is covered in the book - you can get it complete on the included CD. I also found some examples that are based on older version of BCB (I use BCB4), so I had to find the corresponding commands in the menu. But nonetheless I still think it's really a good book and I only wish every software would have a similar how-to book...

Graphic Guide to Frame Construction: Details for Builders and Designers

Great reference book with TONS of Practial information
I am a homeowner and adventurous tinkerer with all things mechancial/technical. I have never swung a hammer for a living, and am fairly clueless when it comes to general construction. (I have installed windows, replaced drywall, repaired plumbing, and run electrical simple lines, never built anything from scratch).

I am about to embark on a complete remodel of a previously converted garage, and wanted to do most of the work myself. Armed with a copy of Visio 2002, I planned the layout of the new room (about 20' x 15') which will include moving some interior walls and doors, blocking an exterior window, installing a new interior window, and extensive removal and replacement of siding, sheathing, drywall, stucco, flooring, etc.

Well, I needed a book that could augment my basic "sense" of the way things should look with some actual technical information. For example, how exactly do you frame an opening for a new window or door? How do you frame up a new wall segment that joins to an existing wall segment? What the heck is a "king stud" any way?

All of this information is laid out very nicely in a textbook-like format, with lots of diagrams. The great thing is the way that the author starts each section with an overview drawing (say of a typical exterior frame of a house), then points to specific features, which are then detailed in subsequent sections.

I would liken this to a "Bentley Manual" for automotive repair; it will not tell the complete novice how to build a wall, but for someone who already knows the difference between a 10d hot-dipped box nail and a 8 x 1-1/4" Drywall screw it is a great reference and can add a LOT of clarity to the way that homes are actually constructed using "best practices". (It will also help point out all the shortcomings of the manner in which your 50's era home was built! :-)

My only complaint with the book is that it is very sparse on "method" descriptions. Essentiallly there are just short paragraphs with brief descriptions that can sometimes be a bit cryptic. These would be very clear to a professional builder, but for someone like me, they require a bit of head scratching and guessing at times.

I had great fun looking at the diagrams, then pulling off wall paneling and seeing the relationship between the drawings in the book and the actual construction of my home.

Best Framing book for Do-It-Yourselfers!
I had to replace a small shed roof (15'X4.5') on the back of a sun room and was very disappointed in ALL of the responses I received from the local contractors. Northern Virginia has been a hot spot for home renovations the past 5 years and apparently, these guys simply do not have to try to get work. Their complete lack of professionalism, responsiveness, and outrageous prices convinced me to do the project myself and thankfully, I found this book before I started. It provided clear, concise drawings and pictures that showed me, a beginner, how to frame, flash, and roof my entire project. The room is dry as bone now and I can't tell you how often I hear, "You did that yourself!". Great book.

my most-used reference book
I am a residential architect, and I refer to this book constantly when drawing details for a variety of projects. No book could show every possible detail, but this one does a great job of illustrating and describing the situations most likely to be encountered. I have found that the recommendations are consistent with general construction practices in my area. I almost always turn to this book first when I get stuck and need a little extra information to complete my drawings.
