Great book for those doing a serious rebuild on an old home
I bought the book while rebuilding the front porch and columns on my 1904 home. It *is* a lot easier to take something apart if you know how it was put together. And we needed to re-create mouldings and millwork that was destroyed by previous property owners. This book shows how the "old masters" built these old houses.

I'm an old house purist. And this book has nearly 200 pages of detailed blue prints and drawings, giving excellent detail on how old buildings were assembled. (primarily residences) It satisfied that craving [us] purists get to make something the way it was made 100 years ago.

The drawings enabled us to *truly* restore the beautiful details of our old home.

The book has very *very* few words, but lots and lots of blueprints and drawings.

For many Christian parents, the responsibility of spiritual leadership in the home can be daunting. Never fear! Focus on the Family's Parent's Guide to the Spiritual Growth of Children outlines the basics of successful Christian parenting for parents with children ages 12 and under. Each of the book's three levels provide assistance and guidance: Level One addresses the apprehensiveness of some parents who feel unequipped to initiate spiritual leadership. By giving an overview of the "what, why, and how" of spiritual training, parents will feel confident and prepared. Level Two--"How To Pass On Your Spiritual Legacy"--focuses on pinpointing the character and interests of your particular family. From helping the parent identify the personality types of their children, to explaining what can be expected from them at a particular age, ideas and methods are given for making daily life a spiritual experience that honors the Lord.

Level Three is meant to be a resource that parents can refer to throughout the years as their children grow. Over 100 pages are dedicated to identifying how to teach the essentials to children in the four specific age groups (0-4, 5-6, 7-9, and 9-12 years old). Topics such as "Jesus has always been with God and is God" are followed by tips on how to creatively assist in your child's learning. While attempting to remain nondenominational, theological questions that children may ask are answered, and an entire reference section gives ideas for further reading both parents and children. While there is no formula to ensure that your child will grow up to love the Lord, parents can exemplify spiritual leadership by saturating their children in the truth of the Bible through the material provided here by Focus on the Family. --Jill Heatherly

Focus on the Foundation of the Family
"Parents' Guide" offers parents an excellent resource for developing the spiritual life of our children. As a pastor and father, I'm glad for Trent & Osborne's research. If the foundation of a healthy society is found in the home, then the foundation of a healthy home is found in our spiritual life with God through Jesus Christ. For another book on Christian spiritual parenting, look into the recently published book, THE FAMILY CLOISTER: BENEDICTINE WISDOM FOR THE HOME, by David Robinson (New York, NY: Crossroad, 2000; 192pp., trade paperback). God bless you in your holy calling of raising spiritual children!

A Thorough, Practical Book About Raising Christian Teens
Though the book is titled, "Spiritual Mentoring of Teens," that specific subject is only a small portion of this volume's material. It is really a thorough, positive book about rearing teens, including matters like communication, choosing what to fight over and what to let slide, practical do's and don'ts, tons of relational stuff--a wealth of good, realistic advice for parents who want to encourage their children toward godliness without creating a backlash through over-control.

The front cover of the book identifies it with James Dobson's, "Focus on the Family," and it is in line with Focus on the Family's general philosophy. This would make a great textbook for a class and wonderful reading for serious parents.

As with any book of this nature, there is bound to be a point or two readers will disagree with. For me, it was the author's advice to assure that teens are in a church with "lively worship." Sounds like a theological bias toward charismatic/seeker sensitive approach to me. There is a lot to be said (but is usually unsaid) about the importance of building stability and convictions beyond the superficial and entertaining. Teaching children that church is about things like relationships, growth in grace and knowledge, and faithfulness (rather than being entertained) has gone the way of the record player.

Despite my personal soapbox, I highly recommend this volume as one of the better ones available.

Peter Bruegel's Tower of Babel: The Builder With the Red Hat

The scope of this delightful book encompasses history, painting, 16th-century construction techniques, the conditions of workers, and the biblical story of the Tower of Babel--designed to reach up to heaven but doomed to chaos. Pieter Bruegel painted two colorful, intricate, and mesmerizing versions of the tower (this book shows both but focuses on just one in depth) and set them in his seaside hometown of Antwerp, Belgium. Subtitled The Builder with the Red Hat, this picture book circles in on a close-up of a tiny image--a man gesturing toward a building stone--and spins a tale about the construction site as if this tiny fellow were telling the story. It's a charming device, and the text is written with great sensitivity to a child's interests and listening ability. The style is conversational: "We should take a closer look"; "Let us ask the man wearing the red cap and the apron"; "I'm sure you can imagine how heavy the stone is that the worker is carrying on his back down the hill. Let's follow him...." The language in the book is not overly simplified; "devices," "incorporated," or "extravaganza" would need explanation. But even for a 2- or 3-year-old, there are many pleasures to be had just from gazing into the pictures. This is just one title in a promising new series from Prestel called Adventures in Art. --Peggy Moorman

My 1st Graders loved it!
I can't say this about many art history books: most of them are either dopey and cute or way over their heads. They loved this one, and so did I! I has lots of interesting details about Bruegel and his time. Lots of good reproductions. The man in the red hat hook works pretty well. I read it to them, but they've been re-reading it to themselves for the past few weeks. Highly recommended!

Pocket Cruisers for the Backyard Builder: 30 Small Sailboats You Can Build for Less Than $12,000

Good information on design, construction and even cruising
The author looks at 30 boats ranging from 15' (785 lbs disp.) to 29' (12,400 lbs disp.). There are no more than 2 designs from the same designer. Also there is a lot of variety from one boat to the next. This is true of the constructions methods & materials, size, appearance, age of design, hull form, rig, intended purpose of the boat... This variety is a great attribute of the book as it increases its educational potential.

Each boat gets its own chapter (~5 pages). The context of each chapter varies a bit. Some put emphasis on the construction method, some on cruising, some on history of the hull type... I find it all very informative and interesting.

I'm unsure as to why this book is out of print. I believe that the author's other books do quite well. I would think if this book were to be put back into print it would sell also?

I hope Dave Gerr writes another book. I recomend all three of the books I have by him (The Nature of Boats & The Elements of Boat Strength). He is open to many design types and gives all the the factors that contribute to a good design their fair consideration. Unlike some, he doesn't over emphasize any one characteristic.

The information in this book is not enough to be able to build the boats from. It is, more importantly, enough to evaluate a design and decide if you want to purchase the plans.

Indians and lost tribes
This is the work done by Cuyrus Thomas in the early 1890's after getting a grant from congres. The issue was to settle once and for all who had built the mounds. Cyrus, one who could not attribute the mounds to Amerindians, concluded that in fact it was the Amerindians who had built the mounds. This was and in some circles still is a hotly debated issue. This work is still the largest catalog of mounds in exsistance. That alone makes it worth it's weight in gold. However, just as important is the vast use of primary sources in the latter portion of the book that many archaeologists today have not bothered to read. If this work were better studied there would be a great step forward in regaining much American Indian heritage.

Best Book on Residential Construction
I have recently purchased over a dozen books on house construction from Amazon in preparation for designing my next house, and NONE of them are better than this now out-of-print book. This book has answered so many of my questions about "Why do they do it that way?" I hope that Hop writes a new book, or that this book is reprinted, for everyone else's sake. I have my copy.
