Second Edition delivers...
Great photos, but especially liked the personal accounts.

Second Edition is great
Loaded with up-to-date records and statistics, this second edition of the bucks and bulls record book is a great tool and an interesting read. It doesn't matter if you live in the eastern U.S., South or Midwest, you don't have to have mule deer and elk in your state in order to appreciate this book. If you love to hunt big game, buy this book.

COLORADO'S BIGGEST BUCKS AND BULLS, Second Edition
I love this book because of all the photos and detailed hunting stories. The book is easy to read because the type is big.

One of The Best
This is one of the best books I have read regarding the subject of incest and child abuse/molestation. It is clear and percise like that of "Beauty For Ashes", honest, truthful and courageous like that of "Nightmares Echo...It makes the reader understand the ramifications of Incest and the devastating effects on the child. I believe this book should be read by everyone in our society over the age of 15. Remarkable book!

A balanced view
This book takes an amazingly balanced view. It describes the complete dynamics of all types of incest, including Father-Daughter, Mother-Son, Father-Son, Mother-Daughter, and extended family. It also has an excellent chapter on suggested modifications to our legal and social system that would help the problem.

I do not agree with the review that the book describes the aggressor as always being some kind of horrible person. Sometimes this is the case, but the book shows a more significant social issue in that the aggressor is often "the average joe" with a significant boundary crossing issue that must be resolved. She indicates that incest may be a much more prevalent problem than most people are willing to admit, particularly if you extend the definition of incest to include inappropriate sexual behaviors beyond intercourse, and may affect up to 40% of women in the U.S.!

I found Susan Forward's suggestions that our social outrage and reactions to the incest taboo are very destructive to society, in that it prevents disclosure of incest, and makes positive and effective treatment of the victim and the aggressor very difficult; that our reaction in this particular kind of crime, society and the family are almost always better served by modifications of our legal system to better treat the entire family dynamic as well as the personal issues of the aggressor, who she claims is the "most easily rehabilitated" of all of the sex offenders. I was surprised to learn that she has seen success rates of up to 90% in reuniting entire families after incidents of incest, which would be impossible if the offenders were the stereotypical "heartless scum" that we see in the popular media.

All this from a person who herself was a victim of incest.

I think this book should be required reading in our high schools.

Betrayal of Innocence : Incest and Its Devastation
This book is very well written and helped me through a tough period in my life when I read it in the 80's. I had been having flashbacks and decided to see if I could figure out what was going on. It provided me with a blueprint and a course of action, which helped me find myself and do something about what had happened to me. I would recommend this book to any victims of childhood sexual abuse.

The Absolute Best Book Ever
This is an awesome book for any 2-3 year old, big sibling. The poor mother's haggard face is a sight to behold. My daughter loved it...especially the end where she came to realize that it is her duty to teach everything she knows to her baby brother. My daughter is now 4 and still likes to have this one read to her.

Awesome sibbling book!
I love this book for my 3-year old daughter. I purchased this book when she was just beginning to walk and talk because the story and illustrations were amazingly true to life. I believe this book helped my daughter see her own potential as she was learning to walk, stomp her feet, and eat spaghetti. Great up-beat rhythm that is fun for both of us. For our next baby, I plan to keep reading this book so my daughter understands that she will be the "big sister" one day. "Hey, Little Baby!" is one book that is very much a part of our lives. Highly recommend this book and often share it as a great, sibbling book with friends.

An Adorable Book
Very rarely a book comes along that a parent doesn't mind reading over and over again! My 3 year old daughter and 1 year old son both love this book. The illustrations are so incredibly cute...my daughter loves pointing out all the details in the pictures...the cat being her favorite character. It's easy for me to relate to the expressions of the mother, and the story sums up the life and antics of an older sibling to a T. We got this for our daugher shortly before our son was born and she's yet to tire of it. I'd definitely recommend purchasing this book.

Great book!
I'll advise all the people who are in an unhealthy relationship to buy this book. This book will open your eyes and break that pattern of obsessive behavior.

Healing and Moving on...
This book helped me break the Infatuation Cycles I had developed. It is written in a very concise and non-invasive way so as not to offend and make you feel...well...like a deranged and sick person. My behavior was deranged and sick, but after reading this book I made a determined and solid decision to move on AND not look back. I have not repeated my Obsessive Cycle since.

Very helpful
When I first got this book, I was so addicted to a person that I did not realize I was stalking him and invading his privacy. This book deals out some harsh truth in the beginning. At first I felt no sympathy for my painful ordeal and I couldn't read it. I would recommend reading this book after you have explored why you are the way you are and accepted that are obsessed or addicted to a person. Before reading this book, you might want to try How to Break an Addiction to a Person. That book is a little more sympathetic to how you feel and it helps you to understand why you are acting the way you act. Once you come to terms with yourself and your problems, read Obsessive Love. It gives clear concise directions on how to stop obsessing using behavior conditioning. The psychological techniques in this book really work because they do not focus on appealing to your logical mind but to your illogical emotions and thoughts. This book also provides some insight on how you got this way and it helps you to understand how the person you are obsessing over feels. That is important. This is a great book that really helps deal with a sickness appropriately. It is not a quick fix it is not cheesy. It deals you the truth and then tells you exercises to do everyday to help you deal with the pain. It takes work and dedication to make yourself a healthier person but with this book, you can do it.

the buck book
I bought it to have handy for rainy days. My children were small and I needed something to keep them entertained. After many years of using it and planty of fun, I moved and I lost it. I am buying again, because I treasure it. And when my children come back with their children, this is the book they want to see. Sincerely, Hilder Garrison

Had it as a kid--loved it then and love it now
I got this for Christmas one year when I was in elementary school and was instantly fascinated by it. I still pull it off the shelf every now and then (I just graduated college) when I want to make a dollar-bill elephant. This book is a LOT of fun for kids and parents alike. It's something parents can give to their kids to provide them with a fun activity that's creative and useful--you'd be surprised how much a waiter appreciates a crummy tip when it's folded up into the shape of a frog that leaps. A co-worker of mine just got it for her kids who are 10, 11 and 12 years old, and they love it too. Definitely fun for all ages. Very well-written (funny and witty) with clear directions. I highly recommend it!!

THE BOOK WITH WONDERFUL PROJECTS IN IDIOT FRIENDLY FORMAT
Wonderful spiral bound book with very thoughtful and painstaking
detail to dialog along with good graphics.

The author didn't make it easy for herself by giving the reader a glossary of terms on the folds and expecting the reader to commit them to memory before proceeding on.

You are literally walked through each project in such a way that you will get professional results the 1st time, in minutes.

The best I've read so far.

p.s. I like the crisp uncirculated dollar that came with it.

Celebrating 70: Mark Mcgwire's Historic Season

The venerable Sporting News, located in St. Louis, was around and flourishing when the Babe set the mark of 60 in 1927, and when Roger Maris broke it with 61 in 1961. It saved the real celebration, though, for its hometown hero: Mark McGwire is virtually coronated in this smart, photo-rich, comprehensive veneration of his record-breaking season compiled under the Sporting News aegis. Each home run gets the royal treatment: every McGwire at-bat of the game is codified, the pitcher identified, the count remembered, and a picture of the ballpark shows where the shot landed and just how far it was hit. There are lots of fascinating bits and pieces--facts and figures, quotes and observations--thrown in to complement solid reportage and good writing, ending with a table of fascinating historical data to give McGwire's achievement added perspective, as if the number 70 wasn't perspective enough. --Jeff Silverman

Mark McGwire's 70 Comes Alive!
Relive Mark McGwire's historic 1998 assault on the single season home run record with this magnificent book overflowing with full-color photos and amusing anecdotes. "Celebrating 70" charts the slugger's season, home run for home run, and features a bevy of information - complete with pictures - including the date of each long ball, the distance, and which pitcher was christened with the dubious distinction of yielding one of Big Mac's clouts! Along the way, you can read a brief summary for each game McGwire applied his trade. The pictures have been well chosen, conveying the emotion of each moment. The text matches the shear exuberance of the images, and Jack Buck's forward is simply splendid.

Outstanding!
The 1998 baseball season was truly one of the most magic in recenty years, thanks in part to the "home run battle" between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. This book chronicles their achievement which I suspect will grow to legendary tones in the years to come. The sportmanship between these two hereos was evident all season long, and the book reflects that.

Perhaps it was fitting that McGwire should wind up in a city that is a true "baseball town," and one that could truly love and cherish his accomplishment. I remember watching the game on TV where McGwire broke Babe Ruth's home regular season home run record and even the Cub players stood and applauded him. This book remembers that.

It starts off with pictures of McGwire and a nice foreword by Jack Buck, the longtime St. Louis Cardinals' broadcaster. There's also a brief story about Maris and Ruth, the men McGwire chased for most of that long summer. And then the home runs. Each page is devoted to a description of each one; the date, the opposing pitcher, the final score and so on.

Reading through each page brought back all those wonderful memories of the 1998 season for me. This book is a wonderful treasure and keepsake to celebrate an incredible baseball season by one man.

Celebrating 70 is historic
For the strongman from Pomona, California playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Summer of '98 was one long victory parade. A reminder of seasons past & a celebration of baseball future. He became a national hero & role model with class. He gave baseball back its luster. In this large, glossy, colorful homage to one fabulous boy of summer - the team of writers, photographers, designers & editors has given us a memorable, collectible, hit-by-hit, play-by-play story of a modern grand adventure. What a gift!

Flawed, Dated Masterpiece
I wouldn't dream of dissuading anyone with an interest in IE lingustics from buying a copy of this fascinating tome, but at the same time would point out that it has some glaring errors, mainly due to its age:

I see another reader complaining about underrepresentation of non-European IE languages. He's not bad on Sanskrit, but point taken on Iranian (which he seems to regard as a minor dialect of Sanskrit). Hittite and Tocharian, Albanian and Armenian are underrepresented too. At the same time, some Western languages are underrepresented, such as Portuguese and Catalan. Maybe not a problem where forms are cognate with Spanish/French/Italian, but it is when they aren't.

My main problem with Buck, however, is that he by and large ignores connections with other language families, assuming that everything can be explained within IE. This sometimes pushes him into absurd assertions - he can't find an Old Irish word for dancing, so he claims that there was no dancing in Ancient Ireland.

Granted, this work was written at the end of the 1940s, before the work on long-distance comparisons of Brunner, Ilyich-Svitych, Greenberg, Bomhard et al. Not a defect in itself, but his etymologies can no longer be taken at face value.

A valuable addition to my library
I have been able to have only a cursory glance, so far, but the remarkable contents of this book have enabled me to confirm a theory on which I am working, relating to the palaeopyschology of links between natural phenomena and the emergence of belief in divinities. I look forward to having a much more detailed browse. The size of the font in this reduced facsimile is indeed small. I have poor eyesight, with thick multifocal lenses in my spectacles, but have little trouble reading the book.

Since writing the above, I've used the book often in searches for IE cognates, particularly Sanksrit, and have found it very useful.

Brian Barratt...

Not enough Indo, but super on the European
I was initially disappointed by this book, since I have a particular interest in Persian (Farsi or Iranian). Alas, Persian is almost completely unrepresented, although Irish seems to be everywhere. Basically, this book is very weak on any Indo-European language east of Suez.

Still, it's a splendid reference and a great achievement.

Making Room: Recovering Hospitality As a Christian Tradition (Study Guide)

Too much of an okay thing
I picked this book up because it was suggested "in addition" to another book on hospitality that I read recently and thought was life-changing. This book is very good, it includes interesting and thoughtful ideas and it is pretty well written. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading some academic paper prepared in graduate school. While I liked the book fine and it definitely worth reading, I think if fails to measure up to some other books on the market right now. I would certainly suggest it for anyone doing academic work, preparing for a class or inventing some church program.

Making Room - an action agenda for the faith community
It is hard to know where to start. The book is elegantly written, it is full of interesting history of the early church. But more importantly, it speaks to a deadness in the church today. Often members of the church have learned to live distant from problems of their "neighbors" be they down the block or down the street in the challenged neighborhoods in our cities.

In the early church, members were the challenged people, they reached out to each other, but now much of the church is isolated and distant from the needy stranger. Read Luke 14 - decide if you have responded to principles in those scenarios described by Jesus. If you come up short, then this book will help with a compassionate analysis of our dilemma in reaching out to "the least of these."

In addition to setting the stage for individuals to learn to reach out to needy strangers, the book creates a context for the faith-based social service discussion. While members of congregations may not exhibit the skills of professional social workers, they have an important role to play in being present and responding to neigbors in their communities who need the touch of grace in their lives.

The book is a good read, but it requires more than one pass. If you invest in the book deeply, you will be called to action.

Insightful and provocative
I read this book in preparation to interviewing Dr. Pohl for a magazine. It's terrific -- a thoughtful examination of practices that used to be considered an essential component of the Christian faith but which have, over the years, been institutionalized and removed from our everyday lives. How do we recapture the Biblical imperative toward hospitality in the reality of a modern world? This book doesn't give pat answers, but it does give you a framework for asking the right questions, and some suggestions that might point you in the right direction.

weather is confusing...
... and will remain so after you read this book. Everything in Buck's book is useful but it is tough to remember all of his rules without a solid grounding in meteorology. The cover's subtitle "a practical book on flying in all kinds of weather" is accurate. This book is about practice, not theory. However, after finishing the book, I was disappointed to find myself as ignorant as ever about weather and completely at the mercy of the FAA briefers.

My favorite instrument flying primer.
I got my instrument rating 25 years ago, and Buck's Weather Flying recommendations are still fresh and pertinent. A friend just shared that she is going to tackle an instrument rating, and Weather Flying came to mind as the perfect gift to make a safe pilot. I still use his practical recommendations in my infrequent IFR flights, and feel that it has contributed to making me a safer pilot. Sorry if this sounds a bit corny, but few books have stuck with me like this. PS: If you're interested, try T.R. Fehrenbach's "The Reckoning" or "This Kind of War" if you want something that will also stick with you through life.

Tom

The real-world truth about IMC
Buck entertains and teaches. Alone, that is a talent, but add to that Buck's experience and his ability to observe and anticipate our weaknesses as pilots, and this book becomes a valuable down and dirty reality check. If you are a high-time pilot or just getting under the hood for real, read this book.

There is a particular joy to flying with the clouds. The style of Buck's writing captures this uniqueness. It also warns the pilot of the consequences of not preparing for the same event.

Weather Flying is a fast read, yet might just save you from being tangled up in a ball of scrap aluminum.
