great book..
good sons who didnot forget their up bring. could read more...

Heart warming, entertaining and funny
After reading this book I felt proud to be the daughter of one of the authors(Ed Morris) He has always inspired me and directed me in the right way. As you can see in this book that he and my uncles had a hard life and intended to use his life and the situations that came about to nourish his family. The book was one book of many biographies that I have read that you actually felt like you had lived this life. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone to read. Of course being modest due to the fact that my dad and my uncles wrote it. I am very proud to be a Morris.

"Roads" an enriching and entertaining journey
It was the first time I had ever been to the hollow in the narrow valley of Aaron's Fork, about 20 miles northeast of Charleston. It was way too cold for a Florida lad, accustomed to warm, sunny Februarys. The frost-painted grass under my feet made a loud crunching sound as we walked back to where the three room plank house and pole barn had sheltered the family. Everything seemed frozen in time, like a movie set from scenes shot before color graced the screens. As a guest of one of the Morris brothers, I felt like I had a front row seat in a replaying of the first part of that movie which ran some six decades ago. While "The Roads That brought Us home" is not a PBS documentary, it easily could be one in the making. Brothers Ed, David and Roger grew up among the poorest of the poor in rural West Virginia, yet each of them would climb well above the poverty line and rise to the top of their chosen professions. Their road began in Aaron's Fork with no well or even an outdoor toilet. Drinking water was provided by a spring that bubbled out of the ground and they "did their business" behind a large rock near a creek. It was years before they got a radio and in the early years received no newspapers or magazines to learn about the "outside" world. But one by one, they left Aaron's Fork and moved into mainstream America, their mixed personalities as mixed as the country growing up with them. Brother David made a career out of drinking from the government trough of Illinois, a quiet, devoted, likeable team player who worked for a time with a man who is probably most famous for being Monica Lewinsky's lover. Brother Roger is a marathon runner who has become an accomplished sophisticate, acting as Director of Public Affairs for DuPont Pharmaceuticals and a food critic (as well as a former wine columnist) for USA Today. Brother Ed became a college English teacher and long-time editor for Billboard magazine. He is probably one of the most honest observers of the follies of the human race, a truly funny vegetarian who attaches himself to common sense in its purest form. He hates everything from religion to sports, to dancing, to small talk, to pierced ears and tattoes. Far from being self-righteous, he is his own worst critic. A fourth brother, Darrell, who was the eldest, died before this book was written, but his life was clearly influenced by the others, as was their late mother, Mary Elizabeth, whose death in 1988 drew the three together again. In "The Roads That Brought Us Home" David, Roger and Ed speak to the reader as if he or she were the fourth person in the room, listening as the grown-up boys trade memories about their separate but overlapping lives. The book is their story, but it's also yours and mine.

The book and the man
As a reporter for a weekly newspaper in Hudson County, I was able to interview Sid twice -- once for a profile in anticipation of his visit to the Beatlefest in Secaucus and later when he worked with a local promoter for a benefit. For both stories, this book helped bring out details of his life and his passions I would have missed, and helped me ask the right questions. It is a fun book about a special man, and for me, the book enlightened me about the details behind some of the more historic events of my life, such as what really happened when the Beatles came to America in 1964. This was a trip down memory lane. Thank you Sid.

The Real Deal
Sid Bernstein is nobody who would be called shy. His bold and confident approach to the music industry made him one of the most successful and historical legends among characters whose sheer presence could eclispe even superstars. Naturally, the book reads like Bernstein's personality: it's straightforward, New York-brassy, and honest. His personal, behind-the-scene accounts of the English invasion and its two major acts -- The Beatles and The Rolling Stones -- are worth the price of the book alone. But there's more to be learned about the evolution of the music biz from first-person advice than almost anywhere else. Best of all, it's a very quick read.

Sid Bernstein is "The Man!"
This book is a MUST read! The impact of the Beatles on our society is immeasurable.

Sid Bernstein promoted the biggest stars in show biz to the heights of their careers. But is was Sid who put his own career on the line and brought the Beatles to America. Sid Bernstein changed the course of society!

An amazing story! "It's Sid Bernstein Calling!" is the book you should be reading right now!

Great memories
I read this book in the galley proof stage. A friend of mine knew the author and told me the book was great. I wasn't from New York and I didn't know much about the Brooklyn Dodgers so I wasn't overly excited. However, one rainy night I picked up the book and I didn't put it down until it was finished.

So many years have passed and I don't remember any of the details, but I do remember the warm and wonderful sentiments I felt when I was reading about the old great Dodger/Yankee rivalry. And, I remember wishing that I could have been there at Ebbets rooting for the Dodgers.

My eight year old son is now fascinated with baseball history.
When we were talking about Jackie Robinson, I remembered the book I had read so long ago and I even remembered the exact title of the book. I just ordered the book for my son to read and I know I'll read it again and again.

If you love (fill in the blanks) . . . Search Out This Book!
There are countless reasons I'd recommend this book. But first, a note of personal regret: I didn't come across this gem until it found me, one day several years ago, as I was prowling through the "bargain books" bin outside a used bookstore on San Francisco's Valencia Street. Frankly, considering all the re-readings I've subsequently done and hopefully will continue to enjoy long into the future, I'd much rather have bought this novel new. Author David Ritz deserves every last possible cent in royalties.

And now to the merest handful of the reasons I'd recommend this book:

If you love novels in which youthful dreams seem to die, only to be replaced by even better dreams once their dreamers grow big enough to match them . . . Search Out This Book!

If you love a tale with a happy ending which won't leave the bitter taste of saccharin in your mouth, one which you can read time and again with your heart in your throat, a lump as big as Brooklyn itself . . . Search Out This Book!

If you love a book which spans years and is driven by a narrative voice so perfectly rendered that you'd swear you can hear him speaking to you alone, allow me to introduce one Daniel "Squat" Malone, standout catcher at New Utrecht High and onetime future "can't-miss future Dodger Hall-of-Famer," as I urge you to . . . Search Out This Book!

If you love a sense of "what could have happened" or "what should have happened," if you can give yourself over long enough that the improbable becomes at least plausible, and love yourself for doing so . . . Search Out This Book!

If you love baseball, whether we're talking its past, its present, or simply its lore . . . Search Out This Book!

And finally, if you love anything -- anything or anyone at all worth loving -- enough so that your heartstrings can be plucked to a perfect resonance . . . Search Out This Book!

Search it out used through Amazon, or via z-Shops, or wherever else you may find it (heck, if all else fails, there's always the public library!), just do yourself a favor . . . Search Out This Book!

Great baseball book
I am not as huge a baseball fan as I was when I read it as a teenager - hey, who has as much time as he did when he was 16 to read and memorize lineups? Stil, I have read it again, and again. It's not common for me to read books sevreal times. However, the baseball action and also interpersonal stuff is excellent. I didn't know about all the history repeating itself, but there were enough differences to make it sensible, and besides, anyone who knows baseball knows that history does have a way of repeating itself, whether it's a pennant race, an in-game move, or whatever. We need more books about the old time teams in the old style parks. Whether that would make me follow it more , I don't know, but it would make me read more.

About the Seder.
This wonderful little book uses a repetitious pattern (ala "A Hole in the Ground" or "The House that Jack Built") to explain the events of a family Passover Seder. The text is full of rhythm and the illustrations are beautiful, warm, and soft bringing to life the closeness of community and illustrating the importance of family during such an important celebration. Those familiar with the traditions described herein will enjoy the book for the memories it can help evoke and those unfamiliar with such things as "matzah", "Dayenu", and "afikoman" will delight in learning about them.

To Life!
Although this is a child's book, like Tevye, it drinks to life. It's a real seder! No one sits down! Someone spills something. A kid falls alseep! The tateh can read and see naughtiness out of the same eye! Here is genuine glee and warmth. A well-meaning Protestant reviewer called its form "The House that Jack Built," but it is, of course, "Chad Gadyoh" Everything in the contextual information at the back is clear and accurate - I used it at a seder for a mixed crowd who, after they understood the references, fell in love with the rhymes. And with the girl who Reads the Four Questions Nice and Loud.

Warm, richly-textured memories brought to life!
This book, especially the illustrations, captures all the warmth and poignancy of family sedars. The subtleties in the pictures (Papa's hand clutching the son's arm, who is reaching for the matzah; the child asleep on the table; the many conversations being held at once) bring back so many childhood memories. A beautifully written and magnificently illustrated book for all ages!

Nelson Mandela: The Struggle Is My Life: His Speeches and Writings Brought Together With Historical Documents and Accounts of Madela in Prison by F
Published in Hardcover by Pathfinder Press (January, 1992)
Author: Nelson Mandela
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

"¿An Ideal For Which I'm Prepared To Die."
What a bottomless well of encouragement and inspiration one gets from its reading! Nelson Mandela, basing himself on the mass of Black, Colored and Indian, workers, peasants and other democrats of South Africa, was unbreakable at the hands of the horrific, murderous and terrorist system of aparthied. Akin to Nazis Germany, the Jim Crow USA South and Zionist Israel, South Africa enjoyed the backing of the US and British and Israeli governments until it was overthrown.

Joining the African National Congress in 1944 at age 26, he and other youth would lead its transformation from and organization of " gentlemen with clean hands" to the mass revolutionary democratic movement that would lead the revolution over apartheid. Doing so even while in prison for nearly 30 years. He was finally released in 1990 at age 72 and was soon after elected South Africa's president.

Mandela in his own words
For decades, a popular demand in South Africa and around the world was: Free Nelson Mandela! This book does an excellent job of showing just why Mandela was so popular among the masses in his country and so feared and hated by apartheid's rulers. He was a first-class revolutionary who fought for decades for his country's freedom and always believed in the power of the masses of people to make change. This book is so inspiring because you read Mandela in his own words, starting as a student leader in the 1940s to a leader of the African National Congress's armed wing in the 1960s to an internationally known political prisoner in the 1980s. He never gave up and he outlasted the vicious apartheid system. The photos in the book also do a great job of showing what the struggle against apartheid was like.

Freedom struggle against apartheid -- Mandela's own words!
What a wonderful experience-- reading and studying speeches and documents prepared by Nelson Mandela during five decades of struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa! Here are key documents of the African National Congress, including the Freedom Charter that became the central document of the mass movement that brought down apartheid. Also Mandela's speeches at different stages of the struggle, including historic courtroom addresses when he was on trial for his life; documents Mandela prepared as the apartheid regime was forced to negotiate with him and the ANC in the late 1980s; and his first speeches after he was released from prison in 1990.
These speeches give a vivid reminder of the brutal, racist regime that was apartheid (and we should never forget that the South African regime was a pillar of U.S. domination in Africa from the 1940s on.) Mandela gives us a real feel for the determined, difficult, and courageous struggle of millions of people who never accepted submission to apartheid and the world-wide importance of the fight for a democratic, nonracial South Africa. And you see truly inspiring leadership in the persons of Mandela and his fellow leaders in the ANC.
Don't miss the 32-pages of photos that really help bring this rich struggle to life as well!

and a great read!
David Ford's autobiographical and well documented book about marijuana is a must read for anyone who wants to know more about this oft-maligned herb. The personal detail is very interesting. Mr. Ford has lived a rich and interesting life - with some riveting sexual adventures!

Interspersed throughout the book are well-researched and documented facts about the medicinal qualities of marijuana. I enjoyed the book very much, and I think you will too!

Good Medicine, Great Sex
"Good Medicine, Great Sex" is an excellent book and a must read for anyone interested in learning the truth about marijuana and its positive effects. David Ford has a way of dispelling the myths that have been perpetrated regarding cannabis (marijuana). David deserves the title of the "Forrest Gump" of the marijuana world. His accomplishments and life experiences are truly amazing and all done while under the influence of smoking marijuana. The book will make you laugh and make you cry but above all, it will raise your awareness at a time when truth is essential not only for our own personal well being but to preserve our basic constitutional right of life, liberty and happiness. The truth shall set us free!!!!!

A reader from Australia who has learned the truth!
I wouldn't normally read a book on marijuana. I questioned whether marijuana had medical value. I must admit, the title of author David R. Ford's newest book caught my attention: 'Good Medicine, Great Sex! How Marijuana Brought Me Creativity, Passion, and Prosperity'. It is so different from what the government propaganda says, I bought a copy. I'm so glad I did. The 50 plus years of true-life adventures of a man who has
interacted with thousands of medical and social users of cannabis, kept me reading.

This courageous book by a cancer survivor, and former broadcaster with CBS television in Hawaii, has convinced me that the government is lying about this herb. The author makes the medical value clear, and with excellent reference notes. Now I believe that no one should go to prison for having
cannabis in their possession. You will learn why the government and big business keep this virtually harmless plant illegal. Everyone should read this book who wants to know the true reason why this plant is kept illegal!

A Splendid Book
The Condor Years it's a superb piece of work. It often happens to me that the more I know about an issue, the more I am unsatisfied with what I read about it, because I am able to detect mistakes and inaccuracies. With John Dinges' book, right the opposite happened. Precisely because I am familiar with quite a few of the documents that he is using, I could appreciate how sound and well grounded are each and every statement that he makes, and how thoughtful, balanced and insightful is his reading of his sources. John Dinges' book has helped me to fully understand the implications and meanings of documents I was already familiar with. And now I am much more confident about the big picture, than what I used to be before reading the book. Needless to say, it also reads beautifully. To read it was a real intellectual pleasure.

What you don't know, might be interesting
I love this book. I actually bought it at the book signing and found John Dinges himself to be an intelligent, modest, interesting man. The book itself goes along the same lines as Assasination on Embassy Row in that it recounts the history but put it into a format that is more like a novel. I read the through the entire thing in one day, and although I thought I had a good working knowledge of Chile during the Pinochet regime, I had not even touched on most of the things recounted in this book.

A relevant vivid account
This is a breathtaking tour de force by one of the very best U.S. journalists who have written long and hard about Latin America, and although it may be not obvious, the book has eye-opening relevence to Washington's pursuit of al Qaeda. The Washington Post, moreover, cited the author's "subtlety and insight of his account of Condor, in which Pinochet's murderous (my word) "tactics made some sense in the face of the legitimate (if inflated) threat that the revolutionary left represented. More often, however, Condor targeted pro-democracy and human rights activists, religious leaders, opposition political leaders and peaceful dissidents -- all in the name of winning a self-anointed 'war on terrorism.'" Foreign Affairs said "But Dinges sees this whole sorry episode as a classic case of 'blowback': the unintended consequences of U.S. policies long kept secret from the U.S.public." Sound familiar? Afghanistan?

Real
I was encouraged by Rebecca's "realness". She spoke from her heart and allowed her true feelings to reach out to others who might not have the courage to express their own feelings. I was impressed that she shared ALL her feelings no matter how rational or irrational they were. Thanks Rebecca!

Friends need this to understand the loss
Rebecca Flair lost her son in a pool drowning and recounts every painful detail of that day. It's a heartwrenching story, often too unbearable to read at one setting. But she is honest, truthful and painfully poignant about her feelings.

What I love about her book, is that she goes through her journal and relives the loss through emotionally raw feelings, then filters it enough to explain to someone else. All too often, grief books are written as though the pain is so little and bearable. Those having experienced such a loss know this to be untrue. That is why books of this caliber are so important, they reach out to those that have truly lost and show them they are not alone.

A Mother's Grief Observed
In June of 2000 my mother and oldest son were killed in an automobile accident. My world shattered. I went to grief counseling for many months. My counselor recommended that I read books written by other parents who had lost a child. This is one of the first ones I purchased. I found that I had experienced many of the same things this mother had. It helped me so much to understand what my husband, children, and I were going through. This is a wonderful book, and I recommend it highly.

More than adequate
While most of the stories in Ms. Arielle Ford's book were touching it was not exactly what I expected I always thought soul mate is somebody who is really your other half, someone who fills that void within your heart, that very special person who makes you more whole than you already and with whom you have ties to from past lives and future lives. You share that unbreakable cosmic bond. When you see them there is just divine a spark between you that literally lights up both your worlds and the world becomes a heavenly place. Or then maybe I am just a hopeless romantic.
.

It restored my belief in soulmates!
After reading about the abusive relationships many women get into and listening to the experiences of some friends, I became cynical. Also, we're all bombarded with news about stalking ex-husbands and boyfriends. Not mention the high rate of divorce. Some of the stories remind me of how I met my first love--I had more faith in love's power to heal. Just as my faith and trust that I can find my soulmate has returned, I have discovered that a great number of authors have recently written on the subject of soulmates. Wow, I guess the best is yet to come!

Soul Food
Arielle Ford has compiled a bounty of healing stories...stories that affirm that while we're looking for love (and sometimes even when we're not), love is also looking for us. I have truly savored this book and re-read many of the stories over and over again. It's a fascinating, mystifying and joyous read. If you want to be deeply moved, and if you're looking for your soulmate like I am, then please read this book.

Once a Wolf: How Wildlife Biologists Brought Back the Gray Wolf
Published in Hardcover by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Authors: Stephen R. Swinburne and Jim Brandenburg
Amazon base price: $14.10
Average review score:

Balancing The Scales of Nature
A study in the perserverance and dedication of a group of people to bring the wolf back to its own enviroment in the wildernesses of Yellowstone Montanna. Full of information this book will elate you as well as sadden you, but the winner here of course is the wolf who once more runs free on his land.

Excellent overview of the wolf's history & current issues
Jim Brandenberg always brings the wolf into our homes vividly and with great skill through his photographs, and in this book, these exquisite photos are paired up with the informative writing of Stephen Swinburne. Swinburne covers an excellent range of topics in this short (but highly-informative) book, including the history of the wolf's extermination in this country, early conservationists, wolf behavior and social structure, myth-busting, the Yellowstone project, and the wolf's future prospects.

He brings in quotes and information from Leopold, Mech, Bangs, Askins, and many other notable figures in the wolf conservation movement to give correct facts and information. I wouldn't call this a book for younger children; it's written at perhaps a teenager's level, and younger children might find the statistics and assorted other information boring. However, Swinburne does cover the bittersweet story of wolves Numbers Nine and Ten, which personalizes the struggles wolves today face.

Swinburne manages to succinctly cover most of the important issues in this relatively brief book (about a half hour's read, perhaps 45 minutes,) and it's a great way to educate yourself or someone else on the basics of wolf conservation. Highly-recommended!

What a great book!
I just took a look at this book and was so impressed. The subject is fascinating, of course, but I'm especially taken with the clear, cogent writing, the terrific quotes, and the truly remarkable photographs. I definitely recommend this for any kid (or adult, for that matter) with an interest in wildlife.
