Silver Ghost: A Sarah Kelling Mystery

A Fun Read
I'm currently working my way through all of the Sarah Kelling mysteries, and this one was no different, being equally enjoyable.

In this book, we're revisit old friends, the Billingsgates. We've met up with them in the Convivial Codfish mystery. This time, they were robbed. The burglar took two Rolls Royces from a locked room, along with the very "Kelling" Aunt Bodicea Kelling. Only Sarah and Max Bittersohn can solve this mystery, and do so in such an interesting, enjoyable way...well, excluding the murders anyway.

We also get to visit other characters from the Convivial Codfish, like the Dorks, the Tolbathys, Cousin Lionel of the hyena pack, and even his mother, Aunt Appie. Needless to say, this is an pleasant and swiftly read story. By the time you realize you've gotten to the middle, you'll already be 3/4 of the way done. Hope you enjoy!

Simplicial Homotopy Theory (Progress in Mathematics (Birkhauser Boston), Vol 174)

Excellent book!
Gives a well-written and concise treatment of developments in an area of topology that has seen considerable progress in the past 50 years. The only other general expository books in this area are more than 20 years old. This is particularly important because the book unifies many seemingly disparate results and approaches. Even classic constructions (like the Hurewicz homomorphism) are give modern (and very concise) interpretations. I strongly recommend this book to students and researchers in algebraic topology.

The Common Touch
Sleds on Boston Common makes history come alive by focusing on a fictional group of children who want to go sledding during the tension-filled days just before the start of the American Revolution. The story moves beyond the normal heroism of the patriots and the perfidy of the British to put a warm human face on everyone. Reading this story can be the precursor to a wonderful visit to the Boston Common to locate where the best sled runs might be. It can also help ignite an interest in American history.

Henry Price lives in Boston, where his father runs a small toy and map shop. Because of rebellious activities, the port of Boston was closed by the king on June 1, 1774. This hurt commerce and everyone was suffering economically. Despite this, Henry's father had made Henry a new sled for his birthday which fell on December 22, 1774. During the two hour break from school at lunchtime, Henry and his siblings head for the Boston Common with the new sled. They are discouraged to find that thousands of troops are setting up camp there, and the troops block all the best sled runs!

What to do? When Henry sees General Thomas Gage, the British Governer of Massachusetts Colony, Henry decides to speak to him. But first, he and his brothers and sister count the troops, horses, and anything else that the patriots want to know.

General Gage turns to Henry and says, "Let this boy have his words."

After listening to Henry, General Gage says, "I'm a father as well as a soldier for my king . . . ." " . . . I know my own children would like to sled this hill if there were here." "He shook my hand, man to man." "My eldest son is named Henry."

In this fictional story, General Gage tells his troops to allow the children to sled, to clear a good run, and to keep the ice in one pond undisturbed for skating.

The children were able to return again and again. "Because General Gage was a man of his word."

The war started in April 1975, and General Gage was ordered to return to England in October 1975.

The illustrations in the book build from splashes of watercolors with inked outlines and details. The images are done in kaleidoscopic form that suggests movement by the figures.

The author also provides an end note that describes more about the events described here, in order to help create that bridge into interest in American history.

The book is also done in blank verse, which gives the style an elegance and crispness that make it a pleasure to read.

I suggest that you also read the poem, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, to your child as a follow-on. If the interest continues to build in your family, there are many fine fictional stories about the early days of the American Revolution that you can also read to and with your child.

You should also use this book to reinforce the point that even those who oppose you are usually well-meaning.

Have a good run!

Songs from the Alley

Songs from the Alley explores homelessness in 1980s Boston, when the city boasted the most enlightened and aggressive homeless policy in the United States, thanks to its mayor, Raymond Flynn, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Task Force on Homelessness and Hunger. Hirsch creates an indelible portrait of homelessness, focusing on two women in their 30s: Wendy, an African American woman who suffers from alcoholism, and Amanda, a white woman who struggles to keep her small apartment and thrift shop job (and to refurbish a plywood dollhouse she finds at Goodwill). Through these two women, and the people Hirsch meets at the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter, she begins to understand the difference between those who seek help from the shelters and soup kitchens and those who won't. She also learns how and why homelessness has grown to the extent that it has and discovers the shortcomings of subsidized housing and job training programs, as she watches Amanda lose her job, fading in and out of functional life. Songs from the Alley is a probing and heartfelt investigation that demonstrates how easy it is to fall through the cracks of society, and how hard it is to get back in. --Kera Bolonik

This book is more than an eye opener
We hear the phrase "it could happen to any of us" so often but most of us don't believe it. This book will tell you how easily it can happen. The stories of these women are heartwrenching, but yet, very educational. I could not put this book down and since reading it, I have been looking for similar books to purchase. We all need to educate ourselves more about people on the street. We should be outraged that this can happen in a rich country as ours. Next time you see a homeless person, don't look at that person in disgust and be jugdemental. Instead, think of ways you may be able to help.

A lesson in understanding.....both sides of the issue.
The book chronicles the change of South Boston high from and all white school to an intergrated school. It is does so remaing unbiased to either side. It is remarkably enlightening and interesting to read. Since it is non-fiction it really captures the reader, making him or her not want to put the book down. Even knowing the story from real life, I found the inside point of view very interesting.

A mixture of historical fiction, mystery, and adventure
This book is part of the Mysteries In Time series, each of which revolves around a young person solving a mystery. In this book, eleven-year-old Emily Parker lives in British-occupied Boston in 1776, and her father is a doctor, who is also an ardent and active patriot. But trouble comes for Emily, when she begins to suspect that their neighbor, Robert Babcock, is actually a spy for the British. Emily must figure out what Robert is up to, and stop him before he can bring danger to her family. There's a lot going on in Boston, and somehow Emily must get to the bottom of things.

This is a very nice book, having a good mixture of historical fiction, mystery, and adventure. My twelve-year-old daughter liked the characters and setting, and has been developing a love of mysteries. She loved the book, and we both highly recommend it to you. [For those of you interested in this era, I would like to recommend the Felicity books in the American Girls series.]

Wonderful characters; higly recommend Cuddy and his friends.
I was doubtful when a friend gave this to me. It sounded hardboiled and I don't read those. It was a marvelous surprise. The characters are real, well-rounded people. Cuddy is not what you expect and keeps surprising you. I particularly like his recurrent conversations with his dead wife, Beth. I just ordered all the ones I couldn't find at my local store! I can't recommend Cuddy and his friends highly enough. It won't be what you think

Breathtaking Synthesis of Physics
The influence of this book is already large, and with this new edition of the English translation, destined to get bigger. Schlomo Sternberg at Harvard has already re-invented the way Undergrad Physics is usually taught with his Symplectic Approach, due in no small measure to his reading of this very book in its previous (French) incarnation. But Souriau is not only readable, and 'followable' in his expositions, the results are so delightful. The only complaint I would make is with the book editors' use of "cutesy" icons (spades, hearts, clubs, diamonds, something that looks like a bugle - for BIG results, one imagines hearing a fanfare every time one sees it), these sometimes get to be distracting. However, the editors' notes are useful and worthwhile. I fully believe the 'program' first enunciated (as far as I'm aware) in this book in 1968, will become more and more a dominant paradigm for physics in the 21st century.

"This is two stories in one with two mysterious endings."
This is a story of connected events which involves life and death situations in a world of blackmail, drugs and big money. In this corrupting world people begin to owe others but sometimes the price becomes their own life. When you get involved in criminal activities like these you pay a high price. The author Winona Sullivan has very well coincided two plots in one story. This mystery is a vow of chastity, a vow of sanctity and a vow of silence.
