Pathways to Manhood: Young Black Males Struggle for Identity
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (August, 1996)
Author: Janet Mancini Billson
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

A Tool for Teachers, Parents, Police, and Counselors
Pathways to Manhood offers a realistic and useful tool for understanding young Black males in their search for identity. How should a teacher respond to a "tough guy" so a potentially violent encounter does not escalate? How should a parent nurture a "together guy" to help him develop into a strong young male with high autonomy? How should a police officer deal with a young Black male who is into drugs and conning? Pathways to Manhood offers a wonderful model for identifying the "strategic styles" used by young people, especially Black males, and for fostering positive styles and diminishing the negative styles. This book is great for school systems, juvenile justice and corrections workers, and anyone else who is trying to understand and cope with young males who are, as the author says, struggling for identity in a confusing world.

The Books That Changed History {4 1/2 stars}
This massive multi-volume study of US government policy on Vietnam has permanent value not just for scholars and students of the Vietnam War, but for anyone concerned with the making of American foreign policy. The "Papers" are fundamentally important not only in terms of content, of course, but even more so in contrast to the public statements of our leaders explaining the purpose and progress of the war. While this makes the (self-)deception and lies clear enough, it is the internal dialogue of bureaucratic thinking that is most fascinating.

The format of "The Pentagon Papers" is a bit confusing, with primary documents mixed into the main narrative, but not always in a distinguishable manner. The sheer bulk of the material will naturally deter many readers, but it does repay the effort and is superior to various abridgements. While the expurgated editions are useful, the nature of the selection process gives them an episodic quality, and tends to highlight dramatic incidents rather than the all-important mundane character of bureaucracy, even on life and death matters of global import.

Daniel Ellsberg, who released the papers to the press, may well have some unheroic qualities about him. But his greatness lay in transcending the constraints of background and institutional context, and recognizing a higher duty to his country and humanity. Not only the substance of "The Pentagon Papers" ensures their significance, but also Ellsberg's example of public service. This is vitally important in a time when yet another presidential administration deceives us all in pursuit of fatally flawed military adventures. Who will be the Daniel Ellsberg of the so-called "war on terror?"

Some of the issues raised by "The Pentagon Papers" and Ellsberg's career are addressed in N. Chomsky, "American Power and the New Mandarins" (especially the essays on intellectuals' responsibility); D. Ellsberg, "Secrets;" and from a rather different stance, J. Kwitny, "Endless Enemies." The fifth volume of the "Papers" contains invaluable critical essays by notable scholars such as Chomsky and Howard Zinn. For "balance," also look at Robert McNamara's mature reflections on Vietnam, "In Retrospect." But he still seems to be partly in denial.

Highly recommended for school and community libraries
The Poetry Of Everyday Life: Dutch Painting In Boston by 17th Century Dutch and Felmish art specialist Ronni Baer (Mrs. Russell W. Baker Senior Curator of Painting in the Art of Europe at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) was produced to accompany the exhibition currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts showcasing and celebrating the longstanding relationship between the Boston gentry and the 17th Century Dutch masters. The Dutch painting style of the times was visually both physical and moral -- traits that had a strong appeal for the early Bostonian upper classes and reflects a surprising collection of works that have rarely, if ever, been seen by the general public. Collectors have lent their prized paintings to the exhibition and made them available for reproduction and expert commentary in The Poetry Of Everyday Life. Here are masterworks by Rembrandt, van der Heyden, van Ruisdael, and many others making The Poetry Of Everyday Life an invaluable addition to any personal Art History collection. Highly recommended for school and community libraries, The Poetry Of Everyday Life is also available in a hardcover edition (0878466312, $40.00).

Political Woman
The book is a well-written and politically informed biography of an outstanding political activist. It combines serious academic analysis, with complete citations from primary and secondary sources, with a compelling narrative of political forces operating in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s in the U.S and New England. Strom's book will captivate both academic and general readers with its current implications. Finally, the whole endeavor situates personal accounts of the subject and the author in ways that the personal and the political come alive! Most highly recommended.

This exceedingly fine academic study of the psychology and sociology that exists between unemployed professions is the most accurate document that exists on the subject. The section on the depression is especially true and compelling.

Very usable map!
Detailed, usable, road atlas which covers everyplace out to I-495, ALL AT THE SAME SCALE! It's one continuous map, so you can orient yourself by following a road from page to page. You only have to know approximately where you are to find yourself on this map, and you never need to know what town you're in just to be able to look something up. There's an extensive list of street names in the back, arranged by towns. Streets are clearly marked and named. They indicate schools, libraries, shopping centers, parks, cemeteries, and many other points of interest.

If you are used to wrestling with those Arrow maps that put one town on each double page, you will find it much much easier to get around by using this map. And it doesn't have ads tucked in, like on that big red map.

The book is spiral bound softcover. A fold-out, laminated front cover has some overview maps and the key map so you can quickly find the page you want. My only beef is that I'd prefer that key map to be on the first foldout flap rather than tucked inside, since it's the one I use most often.
