Civil War Boston: Home Front and Battlefield

A lively social and political history of Civil War Boston
In his most recent book, Civil War Boston, Boston College History Professor Thomas O'Connor illuminates how America's most devastating war impacted and changed the lives of Boston's citizens and its political climate. Although O'Connor's book is rife with detail and scholarship, he never losses sight of the great story he is telling. The author achieves a perfect balance of detailing the war on a national scale while reflecting on its impact in Boston. If you are tired of dry narratives of the Civil War, read this book and learn about the personal side and the dramatic change wrought by the divisive conflict.

Tapply writes a taut thriller
Having a well-respected judge as a client and friend had never been a problem for Brady Coyne until the day the judge received a blackmail note. Even a whisper of impropriety can ruin the Honorable Chester Y. "Pops" Popowski's judicial career prospects, and this note hints at a very severe scandal indeed. But when the blackmailer turns up dead, Brady's in a real bind. Client privilege means he can't tell the cops why he met the blackmailer in a dingy bar off State Street or why that meeting was violent. He can't reveal his client's name. Now as prime suspect, Brady Coyne takes a trip down the dark side, caught between his need for justice, freedom, and the nagging feeling that the prison doors are going to slam with him on the inside. A superbly written thriller with a good sense of humor.

Austin Layman Forever
Coingn of Vantage, by Edgar Winner, John McAleer, is a wonderful malice domestic mystery novel which takes place in Boston. Mary Higgins Clark had this to say about Coign of Vantage: "Humorous, erudite, a good puzzle and a good read. When you turn the last page, you'll feel as though your ancestors were born in Boston." Clark got it right. You'll enjoy visiting Boston and tagging along with protagonists Austin Layman and Ladonna Stanton as they unravel century old secrets behind some of Boston's most proper families. Enjoy!!

Dark Humor At It's Best
The world's of science fiction, horror, and fantasy are filled with archetypal male figures; madmen and monsters, supermen and genius'. We know them well, but what about their forgotten wives back home in the castle, mansion, or futuristic high rise? This collection of poems and short stories takes us behind formerly closed doors, and introduces us to many of those long suffering and oft neglected ladies. Beautifully written, and perhaps not that far off the mark in reference to some relationships.

GREAT TOUR COMPANION!
I'm a tour guide for the Boston area, and I frequently use this book for reference. I love this book. I've had to buy it twice because I ruined my first copy by reading it so much and taking it everywhere. It's small, light and totally portable, so if your here walking the trail it's the perfect companion. If your not here walking the trail, you should be! This book will take you step by step through the Freedom Trail, give you really good suggestions and directions, and bombard you with useful and interesting historical information. It also provides the times, and admission fees for sites. Basically, it is your very own tour guide minus the crowd and rush of the tour (not to mention the over enthusiastic, babbling, yet good natured guide). Take your time, learn and enjoy!

Caviar is the life of the party
I liked the mystery except Sarah Kelling was barely involved in this mystery. It keeps you guessing as to whodunit. Uncle Jem unable to go to the train party Max fills in for him and ends up with his hands full.

A Real Winner!
The cookbook was a 2000 TABASCO Regional Award Winner in their Community Cookbook Competition. (It was the best in the New England area.)

The variety of the recipes make it possible for us to use the book religiously all year long at least twice a month. There is something for everyone in this wonderful book.
The colorful sidebar anecdotes by Conductor Harry Ellis Dickson make the it not only a cookbook, but also a collection of amusing vignettes about the BSO and its history.

An inherently fascinating read
Deftly edited by Barbara Darling-Smith (Assistant Professor of Religion, Wheaton College, Norton, Massachusetts) Courage is the latest addition to the "Boston University Studies in Philosophy and Religion" series and showcases a truly impressive selection of contributions by a variety of learned and scholarly authors writing about the conceptual and emotional virtue of "courage", and those who possessed this quality in full. Ranging from true stories of bravery, to courage in classics of literature, Courage views the trait of defying fear from a multiplicity of angles and dimensions. Courage is an inherently fascinating read and a highly recommended addition to personal reading lists, as well as academic and community library collections.

Double Bind: A Mystery about Psychiatric Abuse, Trauma, Borderline Personality Disorder and Otto Kernberg, with Research into the Neurophysiology and Consequences of Restraint and Seclusion.
Published in Paperback by Shame the Devil Press (19 December, 2000)
Author: Linn Cohen-Cole
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $188.30
Average review score:

I truly loved this book!
Double Bind is an absolutely captivating mystery with a unique plot and an imaginative, yet realistic, set of characters. At the same time, Cohen-Cole manages to tackle and bring to light a terrible, violent "professional" practice that breaks, rather than heals, psychiatric patients. By making public the practice of restraint and seclusion, through such an absorbing novel, the author has already begun the movement towards the eradication of this practice.
