They were NOT amused - but, I was!
My goodness - don't be put off by the title. This is a swell book about swells! I have read this volume many times and have given it away as a gift too. Hundreds of humorous anecdotes about "Boston Brahmins" and the nouveau riche who invaded their watering holes. They were NOT amused - but, I was! I loved reading about the myopic brothers who founded the Myopia Hunt, the Sears heiress who used wandering tourists for target practise, the Booth Brothers (as in John Wilkes) summer haunts, and more. Very entertaining, very tongue in cheek. Great beach reading.

very interesting for t hose interested in Boston
This book has 128 pages, with almost every page covered by two black & white photographs with a short caption. Chapters are: The Early South End, Places of Worship, Schools, Hospitals, Temples of Fun, Transportation, The 20th Century, The Library, and Business & Industry.

The picture captions are interesting and credit their source. The book may have benefited from more text, but it is chock full of great photoographs that bring this interesting neighborhod to life. Volumes on the Back Bay and the North End are interesting also.

Boston Marathon a Winner!
I have read and enjoyed a library copy of this book for years, and was very glad to find it here. It is an excellent journey through the history of the Boston Marathon. Great inspiration for dreamers who hope to be there someday, and great memories for those who have. It is well illustrated and narrated. Many great color photographs and rare old photos. It is a great find!

A spiritual eye opener.
Jane Boston is a friend of mine and I assisted her with this book. When she called me to meet her in her office at Hitchcock Rehab. Center, I left amazed that she wanted me to assist her in typing a book that, as she said "God told her to write." I found, as I typed, the words for the book came together to make very interesting stories, all of which are uplifting and at the same time, teach how to hear God's voice in our own lives. If you're on a spiritual journey, trying to understand the scripture and the workings of the Holy Spirit, you'll find this book to be a great help in your journey. You'll love it.

The best of the "Flynn" series
McDonald's hero "Flynn" is not as popular as his "Fletch" series, but "The Buck Passes Flynn" is the best of the series and every bit as good as a Fetch novel. The theme, that someone is making random $100,000 deposits on the doorsteps of every home in small communities around the country and creating havoc in the process, is quite fascinating (though admittedly dated, it would probably be about $250,000 today). It is a mystery worthy of the great Inspector Flynn, and is told in a humorous style for which McDonald is known. Overall, a great book for fans of detective fiction.

Best field guide for butterflies of the northeast
If you are looking for a filed guide to the butterflies of the northeastern United States, this is THE book to get. Written for a relatively small geographical area, the book contains only those butterflies likely to be seen in the regioon...unlike other guidebooks which offer many photos of butterflies not native to the regioon you are in. Excellent photos and the reduced subject area result in quick identifications. Although written for the northeast, the book is useful over a wider range...I have even used it in Texas to great effect. Don't put too much stock in the information about flight period and abundance, though. And don't expect much info on larval hostplants, etc

fabulous crime thriller
After retiring from her job as a research professor at a California college, physicist Gloria Lamerino returns to her hometown of Revere, Massachusetts. In her late fifties, she met the love of her life homicide detective Matt Geneva and after a two-year courtship, she moves into his home. Matt undergoes a physical that reveals he suffers from prostrate cancer.

Meanwhile Gloria, a police consultant, is forced to work with Matt's partner on a case that is very close to her heart. Her goddaughter M.C. Galigani, who left her teaching and research position in Houston, believes that her abusive ex-boyfriend Jake Powers is stalking her. Her former coworker Wayne Gallen is the one who shows up at her apartment warning of the danger she is in because of a misdirected email. When a private investigator posing as a student of M.C. is found murdered in Revere, Gloria really starts to worry. Between taking care of Matt and connecting the dots on an illegal medical experiment run by someone who doesn't hesitate to kill those who get in his way, Gloria is busier than when she worked two jobs on the Pacific coast.

Two of the reasons Camille Minichino's mysteries are popular is that they are intelligent and believable. The heroine is a police consultant who handles herself in a professional manner, which gives her legitimacy to readers who appreciate some realism in their novels. Superb plotting, likeable characters and enough romance to appeal to fans of that genre turn THE CARBON MURDER into a fabulous crime thriller

History mixed with a great story
Kim Moore obviously has a real grasp of Irish history and locations. She's written a great book that combines Irish locales as well as more familiar landmarks in Boston, Chicago and Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. The main character becomes involved with an IRA terrorist, and life takes her on a rollercoaster ride as she endures the hardships of a relationship with someone she rarely sees. When she gets forced into hiding terrorists in her basement apartment, the story takes an unanticipated twist, and the ending is a huge surprise! Well done!!

A MUST READ for anyone interested in education reform
I am the founder of St. Louis, Missouri's first charter school - the St. Louis Charter School... This book is an invaluable resource on national education and urban trends. It is packed with a wealth of data on schools, student, and cities. Once you have read the book, you will be armed with real numbers, case studies and examples to use in planning and promoting your own charter school or engaging in conversations with others about education reform and the history of public education in America.
