Streetcar Suburbs the Process of Growth in Boston,

A classic
This book is important to anyone wanting to understand why the streetcar industry was such an imporant force in shaping America's cities. While it uses Boston as a case study, you can apply the same ideas in hundreds of cities and see how the same thing happened. Streetcars were the boom/bust speculative industry of their era, just as "dot-bombs" were the boom/bust of the recent era. Of course, real estate speculaton lives on, but street railways are no longer the tool.

The History of Dorchester, Roxbury and West Roxbury
All ye people of the Parkways! Read all about the history of suburban Boston. It's all good! This is a scholarly study of the history of Roxbury, Dorchester, and West Roxbury (which includes Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Mattapan, and Hyde Park.) Have you ever wondered why Washington Street in Roslindale looks the way it does? Why one street has mansions and the next has turn of the century boarders? And why does the bus run down one street and not another? Find out in Streetcar Suburbs: The Process of Growth in Boston. Cambridge tip: you can find cheapie copies of this book at the Harvard Press Bookstore. That's how I got mine.

Streets of Hope : The Fall and Rise of an Urban Neighborhood

An inside look at community development
I witnessed much of the transformation described in this book and it is remarkably accurate. This should serve as a guide for community organizers seeking to work in neglected neighborhoods. Too bad Peter Medoff is no longer with us.

Success story in community development, w/difficult odds
A little too much detail. However, this is an inspiring success story about a community in very bad shape, that turned itself around totally, working "from the inside out". Well known in the field of community development, in my area.

Premiere guide to Boston dining
The only thing better than the outstanding art design of this up and coming guide to dining in Boston and Cambridge is in fact the restaurants chosen for this delightful publication. All of Boston's favorite restaurants are featured, with map, menus, and a picture of the dining room included. Restaurants are grouped by location, which is helpful when you have an area of town in mind. All in all I place its value up there with my Zagat's guide to dining in Boston, and find that these two publications compliment each other nicely.

When you're stuck, this book really helps out!
I bought this book in the middle of a book buying spree. Unsureat first, it is now an essential part of my dining guidecollection. My girlfriend and I use it quite often. The sidebars with sample menus and other tidbits of important information like hours and dress code are really helpful. I've discovered many new restaurants with this guide. Highly recommended if you live in or around Boston, and even if you plan on visiting the city for vacation. Thanks for the great dining publication!

What a Treasure!
This is definitely the best insight to Boston dining on the market. Its layout not only makes it easy to navigate, but the gorgeous covers and glossy pages make it a perfect holiday gift for family and friends...

Best restaurant guide I have ever used
I use this book all the time and look forward to every new issue as they are always so beautifully done. I keep several copies on hand to give to guests and visitors to the city. Every restaurant or caterer has a full page providing key information, descriptions, menu items, photographs, etc. -- a much more thorough and enticing guide than any others I have found. The fine attention to detail makes flipping through the pages a real pleasure. I use it when planning parties and business events, and my friends and I refer to it all the time when planning our nights out. This year I also plan to give it as a holiday gift to my clients.

Kelley Takes You There
On page one Nancy J. Kelley transported me to a place and time in Old New England that has never felt more real. And her brilliant story about the loving, complex, smart and courageous Hannah kept me there throughout. This is a book ear marked for all my nieces and nephews for Christmas 2002, but make no mistake: this wonderful story is also for adults who wish to be treated to a beautifully written novel about a fascinating time in Boston's history. Write on, Nancy Kelley!

Wonderfully Done!
Great story line, captures your interest immediately. Certain to have young readers enjoy a bit of Bay State history. Terrific cover. Should become a classic!
Looking forward to more from Nancy J. Kelley!

Year 2000 Software Crisis is a must have tool...
Dr. Jone's Year 2000 Software Crisis - Solutions for IBM Legacy Systems is a must have tool for anyone arming themselves for Y2K work for the next few years. The tools on the CD-ROM and cited examples will make your life much easier in dealing with the current crisis.

This book is one of the most comprehensive on the market covering most topics you will need in your Y2K endeavor. Thanks Kieth for opening my eyes on a few of the topics you covered..

Excellent book for Y2K Practitioners
This book arms one with both the methodology and the tools needed for completing a Y2K project successfully. The comprehensive reviews of the leading tools is a big plus. Also, the features you should look for in a particular tool category are documented, making tool selection easy. I found the cost estimation models particularly useful. In short a must-buy for Y2Kers !

A Must-Have.
Right now, my social life is pathetically nonexistent, but if you're looking for a guide to local eateries for that special first date, this guide is absolutely priceless. It has all the information you need to know about the most popular and acclaimed restaraunts in the local area. The book doesn't dig deep and tap into other, smaller places that may have passed the radar screen, but it's still an important guide that's as essential as a dictionary.

Useful and democratic restaraunt guide
The Zagat guide gives a good general overview of the Boston restaraunt scene, with ratings and quotations submitted by diners themselves. What a great idea!! It also has excellent crossreferenced indices. The one flaw in the system is that the guides tend to exclude the smaller, newer, or lesser known restaraunts... but perhaps this is because we Bostonians are a secretive lot who want to keep the real gems for ourselves... just kidding! In the back of every Zagat guide is a response card to send back to Zagat, so that your opinions can be included in the next issue.

Great book Talmadge!
I thoroughly enjoyed your book. I have given it as a gift and recommend it highly. One person I gave it to grew up a Brooklyn Dodger fan and he really loved the section about "Leo the lip" Durocher.

If you want to learn about the fading days of Gehrig and the ascendancy of the splendid splinter, you will find it here. The personalities of the various featured players shine through in Talmadge's prose. Easy to read, enjoyable, and inexpensive when bought used, this makes for great summer reading!

This book turns scholarly research into living stories.
This book humanized history by relating the stories of Natalie Rothstein's emigrant ancestors, and her parents, to events in Europe and the U.S. over the past hundred years. The author has turned scholarly research into living, breathing stories. It was fascinating to me, a non-Jew, to see how the succeeding generations of American Jews yearn to know and appreciate those who have gone before. I have often observed something similar in Hawaii, where I live now. Like Rothstein, people who are three and four generations away from the Orient often return to their ancestral villages in China, Japan, the Philippines and Korea for visits at least once. I felt the same way when I finally got to England.

The book takes on a more immediate tone when we reach Rothstein's own era. Through her eyes, we experience the Thirties, Forties and Fifties. She reminds us of famous Jews in every walk of life.

Most interesting to me were the years she and her Army captain husband spent in rural Germany with their three children. He was a doctor at an Army base. What mixed emotions they felt as Americans and Jews in the country so recently dominated by Hitler and his Nazis! She's a wonderful writer, observant and thoughtful. We get the viewpoint of a well-rounded modern American woman, refreshing in these days of trashy ghost-written bimbo biographies.

An American Family reminded me somewhat of Barbara Tuchman's books (Guns of August and Night of the Generals) in that it fleshes out history and takes you there where and when it was happening.
