Red Dawn at Lexington
The author presents rich insights to events and characters on both sides involved in our nations struggle for independence. The amont of research the author has done is tremendous and it seems that much of the information is newly discovered. The book is full of history yet reads very well.

I had not realized before reading this book how many of our nations early heros had developed their military background and leadership ability through their experiences in the French and Indian Wars and how the military leaders on both sides had developed respect for the other because of those shared battles.

I think every American History teacher should own and read this marvelous book to supplement what is available in traditional texts.

An excellent history
I found this book to be a truly fascinating history of the beginning of the American Revolution. Don't be fooled by the title. It covers much more than just Lexington and Concord. It gives good background information on the origins of the war, and follows the conflict through the British evacuation of Boston nearly a year later. It is a very fast paced, well written book. I highly recommend it.

Reservations Recommended, highly recommended
Matthew Barber is a middle-aged, recently divorced man spiraling through midlife crisis. He reflects miserably on his past, loses himself in fantasies, and therefore fails to focus on reality and his potential to find happiness in the here and now.

As a side job, he develops a persona, B.W. Beath, to use when writing his sarcastic, sharply insulting restaurant reviews for a local Boston periodical. Each chapter in the book provides scenes from Matthew's life in which he visits a restaurant, and concludes with B.W.'s review of the chapter's featured restaurant. As the novel progresses, however, the content of each review has less to do with the dining experience at hand, and has more to do with the self-imposed unraveling of Matthew's life. Toward the end, B.W. takes on more power in Matthew's personality - as he finds his way into the body of the chapters and he begins to interrupt Matthew's thinking and influences his decisions and actions.

This book is a page-turner, comic and biting, humorous and harshly real. Eric Kraft has done it again - though this book has a much different flavor than his other Peter Leroy adventure stories, it is every bit as entertaining and enlightening. For a thorough sampling of this artist's talent, style, and wit be sure to check out his web site!

It changed the WAY I eat at restaurants!!!
Fabulous book- absolutely loved the way he thinks about everything (I guess that I wholly relate to him). It seriously changed my restaurant experiences - forever! Thank you Mr. Kraft-- I'm starting Herb 'n' Lorna now!!

Introductory Guide: American Revolution: Myths and Realities
This is a very concise and thought provoking book. Dr. Andrews addresses issues that are still challenging us today while at the same time, giving the reader an excellent historical guide with fascinating information not only about the events and sites of this exciting part of our Country's history, but also by giving us glimpses of the part played by many diverse people (which, unfortunely, is not fully explored in most of our American history textbooks). The introductory section "Modern Myths and Revolutionary Realisties"and "Prelude to the American Revolution" sets the stage for what follows--a truly readable introductory history/guide book about the area! Of special interest to this reader were the sources listed at the end of every chapter as well as the chapter explaining some of origins of Colonial idioms still in use: "skin flint", "mind your P's and Q's", "pot luck". This book is a winner and deserves to be in everyone's bookcase or back pocket to be read and used and savored and given as gifts.

Not Your Average Revolutionary Guide
Joseph Andrews' Revolutionary Boston, Lexington & Concord: The Shots Heard Round the World! offers the unusual combination of being a quick read yet containing factual, compelling information. The author has done his homework on this one. The content is succinctly written and contains many interesting anecdotes, actual quotes from the patriots and British, little known facts and myths that all add up to a little jewel of a book. If you are traveling to the Boston area or just want to bone up on this most historic area, without reading tomes of history, this book is for you.

A wonderful book!
I am one of the "locals" that the author, Dr. Andrews, mentions who has seen a lot of the sites, but at different times. I never knew the extent of the involvement of so many towns. The part about Boston was an especially pleasurable trip through memory lane for me, since my father was a member of the Massachusetts General Court from 1940-1950 and Boston was an integral part of my early years.

I enjoyed how Dr. Andrews was able to weave together separate parts of Massachusetts Revolutionary history into an easily readable book with lots of anecdotes and explanations that make this history come alive. It is amazing to realize that on April 18,1775 the British troops "embarked from a spot near today's Public Gardens...before landfill built up the area..."

So much packed into 144 pages; a must read; a most enjoyable guide!

Revolutionary Boston Comes Alive!
This guidebook is a great read - if you are not now planning a trip to the Boston area you will surely want to once you finish! I'd like to catch the next plane out of Honolulu & go on a tour. The author makes history come alive again. He clears up many misconceptions & tells what really happened. His style of writing is reader friendly. In addition to being a comprehensive guidebook it is also worth reading for anyone interested in Revolutionary History. Lots of pictures too.

A wonderful journey back in time
A captivating, romantic story set in Revolutionary Massachusetts. Not only historically interesting and factual, but the author also manages to take your emotions on a delightful "journey" filled with anticipation and the unexpected right through to the end of this fascinating tale! Author, Mary Carter, has a gift for telling a story and with this novel we, the readers, are the lucky ones to be on the receiving end of her tremendous talent! Bravo!!!

A genuine gold nugget
A real treat! This historical novel set in Revolutionary Massachusetts provides a sensitive love story woven around a fascinating journey through New England's revolutionary times. This is a novel that pays careful attention to detail (General Gage really was noted to look just like Samual Adams). Author Mary Carter has a delightful and mischievous sense of humor, and her knowledge of her subject matter shows. A real winner.

A great second book to a great series
The Glory books, along with King Fortis the Brave and The Chronicles of Narnia, rank among my favorite young adult books of all time. Shadow Tree is probably the best of all the Glory books. Highly recommended.

As good as the first!
What a great sequel! I was not disappointed! Ms Lynn continues Glory's wonderful adventure. I anxiously await the next installment.

Shadrach Minkins: From Fugitive Slave to Citizen
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1997)
Author: Gary Collison
Amazon base price: $30.00
Used price: $6.43
Collectible price: $12.95
An impressive feat of detective work lies behind this portrait of Shadrach Minkins, the first black man arrested in New England under the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. Minkins had escaped from slavery in Virginia and come to Boston, where he was arrested in February 1851. Before his case could come to trial, however, a group of black citizens invaded the courtroom and spirited Minkins away. Thereafter, except for scattered newspaper accounts and anecdotes, Minkins was lost to history. In uncovering evidence that Minkins settled in Montreal, where he helped establish a community of blacks who fled slavery, author Gary Collison restores Minkins and paints a fascinating portrait of those troubled times.

Great - would make a great movie or tv special.
It's hard to imagine how much work went into the research of this book. To find the details and documentation is mind consuming. The story puts flesh and blood onto a part of history that was forgotten and lived only in bits and pieces. Truly the work of a dedicated individual.

Excellent historical overview through one slave's history
Shadrach who?? This book provides amazing insight into the experiences of an unlikely hero whose story should be taught in grade school. A terrific amount of information condensed into a readable, enjoyable package--I can not imagine how difficult it must have been for the author to gather such little-known information. I only regret that I hadn't known the book or its main character years ago.

Great stuff!!
This is by far the best book on Schubert varieties that I have ever seen. Precise, yet detailed, thorough but never pedantic. Billey is a wonder. The writing, though admirably confined to math, is poetic; never more so, than in that lyrical sentence that begins "Let there be a Wyle space..."

Illuminates the subject matter
Clear, cogent, and to the point. Explores the relevant variables and delivers the goods. A must read for Schubert afficionados.

Enjoy a history lesson while you visit New England
The Spiritual Traveler: Boston and New England provides peaceful, restful places so that you have a balance between hectic and serene on your trip. The author has divided the book into chapters for each of the New England states, as well as Boston and Cape Cod. She provides a comprehensive index and glossary. The author's writing style makes New England's spiritual past come alive, and the present intriguing. Bottom Line: If you are visiting New England, make sure you have a copy of this book!

wonderful present
I bought 2 copies, one for myself and one for my sister-in-law who lives in the Northeast. This is a great present. Jana does a great job! I can't wait for her next publication.

New York City in the '60's
I've read various novels dealing with the Sixties, Brautigan et al, but most were West Coast oriented. Boston's novel is East Coast. Now the times and stimulation were similar, but I think the East Coast version was little darker and more intellectual. Kind of East Village vs. Haight Asbury, the former already brimming with counter culture lore and history. Boston's book is intelligently and poetically written, but is not a quick read. This is serious literature, but as others have pointed out, a more accurate snapshot of the Sixties, not to mention a very entertaining one.

60s realism
Boston has provided us with an uncannily accurate feel for the 60s, a decade of emergence, fueled by drugs and individualized anarchy

As in his poems, Boston creates very palpable imagery that helps place the reader in the midst of the characters for a realistic journey into one of the most important decades of the century
