Letters from people on the front lines
From Boston To Berlin: A Journey Through World War II In Images And Words by Christopher E. Mauriello (Assistant Professor of History, Salem State College, Salem, Massachusetts) and Roland J. Regan Jr. (Adjunct Professor at Harvard University, Suffolk University, and Salem State College) is a powerful, emotional look at the war that forever changed every nation in the world. A small portion of the book is devoted to an overview of major events in WW II, to refresh the lay reader's memory. Black-and-white photographs and letters from people on the front lines comprise the overwhelming majority of From Boston to Berlin, adding a personal touch to the life-and-death struggles on D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and much more. A poignant memorial book, From Boston To Berlin is a highly recommended contribution to the growing body of World War II literature.

Fascinating first person account of WWII Europe
WONDERFUL AND FACINATING ACCOUNT OF THE EVERYMAN IN THE AMERICAN ARMY IN EUROPE DURING WORLD WAR 2 (WWII)

The authors recount the war experiences of their father's as they trekked across Europe chasing the Nazi's back to Berlin. Their story is told through the pictures taken by Regan and letters home by Mauriello. We are able to see a much more personal side of the conflict - the day to day struggles and lamentations of the average man in the fields.

The photos are remarkable because Regan never developed them during the war, and thus they were never subject to military censorship and readily depict the daily grind from the soldiers point of view.

Mauriello's letters home allow us an even more intimate and personal glimpse into the life and mind of one man facing the perils of occupied Europe. A special kind of humanity comes to light as the "orders" of the Command conflict with the generous and loving nature of another of America's forgotten hero's.

This would be a MOST EXCELLENT GIFT for a son or daughter to give to their veteran father. Give it to them, show them you are interested in what it was like for them to be involved in such a world shaking event. Use this as an opportunity to get them to share the special stories that they have inside them.

fun trivia facts of boston
This book was just amazing. It presents obscure, yet fascinating facts about Boston, most of which I wasn't aware of.
I used the book on my fifth grade class, to play a game of Trivia with them, and they had a ball and learned a lot.
I would highly recommend this book to adult readers, middle and high school students, parents, teachers, etc.
GREAT !!!!!!

This was both a fun and a great learning book.
This book presents interesting, sometimes obscure facts about Boston. Subjects covered include historical figures, legends, geography, wildlife, stories, and other little known facts about the city. You can learn a lot by reading it and another interesting feature is that the book is designed so that you can also use the book to play a family or group trivia game! Well worth the price! It is a great book for adults, young readers, or teachers.

Charlotte McLeod is in fine form
Sarah Kelling's Aunt Emma is a woman who throws herself into good works, such as leaping from a burning building into a net to raise money for a fireman's widow. Now old friend Adelaide Sabine needs a hostess for her isolated summer place on Pocapuk Island, and Emma leaps again. She'll enjoy a quiet summer of rest, relaxation, and repairing the stage jewelry belonging to her pet Gilbert and Sullivan troupe while she keeps a benevolent eye on the artists and writers who'll be occupying Adelaide's six guest cottages. She packs up the baubles in her old Gladstone bag and heads for the coast of Maine. On the ferry, Emma is drugged and her bag temporarily stolen - could someone have mistaken the paste jewels for real diamonds? On the island, she's barely settled in when her Gladstone bag is heisted again, a trespassing scuba diver is found dead, and a mysterious stranger is off on a rampage of attempted murders. Emma won't stand for such a shocking breach of island etiquette. She enlists niece Sarah and nephew-in-law Max Bittersohn for a spot of long-distance detecting - and sets about digging a trap for a ruthless villain. A fine and witty read.

One of Her Best!
If you like Charlotte Macleod's books at all - don't miss this one, if you can get hold of a copy. It's lively and fun all the way, without the dry stretches that can strike any prolific author.

Great Cases of the Thinking Machine

Amazing Fact that most don't know
Jacques Futrelle was way ahead of his time. I remember when I first read some of his stories, how they seemed so "Modern" with talk of Computers, and Scientific, AND Futuristic things. Jacques Futrelle was very, very famous in his day, and perhaps would have wrote many more great books, unfortunately he was one of the many, many souls that lost his life on the ship you all have heard so much about...The Titanic. So sad that after being so well known in his time, he is all but forgotten now.

Great classic detective stories
This collection of Thinking Machine stories is the classic American analog to Sherlock Holmes. The author develops the logical detective model and these stories are a must-read for all true lovers of the mystery genre. The author died on the Titanic.

Best kids' activity book
I've read quite a few books suggesting activities with young kids (18 months - 4 years) and this one was definitely the best. All the ideas are simple, everything I've tried has been enjoyable for both my son and myself, and most use ingredients and equipment that I already have in the home. Most of them were new ideas to me also (and those that weren't still had good suggestions for a novel spin). This is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone with preschoolers.

Best Preschool Idea book I've found
I received this as a gift, and it is the best book I've found for projects for my preschool son. We have made relief prints from real fish, butterflies and flowers from coffee filters, snowy day paintings, potato prints, and lots more. This is what I pull out when I'm going to babysit for friends!

Who, What, When, Where, Why and How
Simplicity, Love, Priceless. Three words I use to describe I ching life by wu wei. Simple; because I found every portion of this book is so easily understood. It spoke to me from the inside out. Love; Wu Wei must have a great deal for humanity to share such secrets as those uncovered in this book. And after reading this book you will too. I revel in our interconnectedness. Priceless, precious rare; that is the state of such wisdom today, this is the power and humility of this concise but thorough work. For believers and non-believers a like. Give it to a Friend. Give it to a Stranger. Give it to YOURSELF.

I CHING LIFE:living it

Family Favorite
I bought this book for our now-22 month old daughter over a year ago because music was always an important part of my life and I our daughter to appreciate music as well. The moment we opened to the first page, it became one of her favorite books. As I would read it to her in the beginning I would do motions with the book -- to "Pound your drum" I would pat her tummy, to "Bounce and Boogie" I would bounce her up and down, etc. Soon she was doing the motions for the following page before I could even get the page turned. She LOVES this book, and I have always had fun reading it to her as well. The rhythms of the book are wonderful; you'll feel like you're singing a song with your child every time you read it. I highly recommend it!

Go Baby Go.....
"Jazz baby, jazz baby,/join the band./You've got music/in your hands." So begins Carole Boston Weatherford's engaging and entertaining romp, and little ones will be tapping feet, snapping fingers, playing real or imagined instruments, and dancing, bouncing, shimmying and jiggling to the jive of jazz. Ms Weatherford's rhyming text is filled with energy, rhythm, and motion, and complemented by Laura Freeman's bold and bright illustrations. Each two page spread dazzles with color and sheer joy as children are pictured on a rainbow, note-filled background blowing horns, plinking keys, plunking strings, beating drums and moving to the music. Perfect for preschoolers, Jazz Baby is a fun-filled, interactive celebration that is sure to become an instant family favorite. "Jazz baby, jazz baby,/hum a song./Let it rock you/all night long."

A Truly Amazing Book
Upon first reading this work of art by Bruce Tuckman, i was vacationing at a friend's lake house. The book was recomended to me to read so i began reading. The book did not leave my hands after that until I was done with it. It contains the same descriptiveness as the book, Once A Runner, by John L. Parker. This book ranks up at the top with the rest of them.

An inspiration to any runner trying to qualify for Boston!
I read (and reread) this book before my first Boston Marathon. The action was so real I couldn't tell if this was fact...or fiction! Did Brad Townes win??? or did Bill Rogers win?? As I ran the route from Hopkinton to Boston, the scenes were vividly replayed in my mind. It was like I had been here before! This book is MUST reading for anyone attempting to qualify for Boston..."Long Road to Boston" convinced me that if Brad Townes could overcome his demons and handicaps, then surely I could train hard enough to join the runners at Boston...and I DID!! This book accompanied me to Boston!
