Tra la la la la......
Shove this into your kitchen pantry (a pantry is a little spot in the kitchen where you store dry food that doesn't need to be refrigerated. the food in my pantry is simply delicious, especially these cute little candy snowmen. Oh, it's such a shame you have to eat them because they're so adorable! but they taste so good!... er just in case you didn't know) but anyway... the people in this book are mean! Oh and all the protagonist talks about in the first chapter are lines. I know that the book is called "Desire Lines" but still! Oh, but the writing is terrific! =p Hee hee hee!!!!!

Fascinating
Besides being thought provoking this book is exceptionally well written. I agree with everything Booklist said. It's a gut wrenching story about a basically likable kid making the wrong choices. Bravo to Mr. Gantos for finally writing a story about a realistic teen who struggles with his conscience and doesn't do the right thing.

It doesn't deserve an award, but it makes you think...
Let's be honest-- Desire Lines is not a well-written book. But with that same honesty, let's admit that the book is absolutely awe-inspiring in the feeling it leaves you with. Living in the midwest, I walked through my house after finishing it, numb; I brought it to school as passed it around among my firends who have the same concerms I do. I recomended it to every English teacher I could talk to. I want to make it a requirement for joining the GSA I head... This book is important because it makes you think about the way things can get out of control; it makes you think of a phrase I assume originated from an Amnesty tee shirt: 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for enough good people to do nothing...;' it makes me paraphrase Kim Gordon and say you take a look at all the hate, it makes you feel very up-to-date...

Whoa dude
This is a fun book with great pictures and neat info. That person down there needs to lighten up and write a book themself for all of you really "serious" California Raisin collectors. Since this is such a serious subject and everything.... Jeez!

i really enjoyed getting this reference guide
It helped alot with finding what I didn"t have.I have been collecting since the raisins were born. I think there are only a couple of things that I do not have. I"m interested in talking with others that enjoy the raisins, and seeing the different ones from other countries.

Excellent and Iffy
I know this book has some wrong dates, but I never noticed until they were pointed out to me here. Other then a couple dates (like two) this book has been an excellent resource meeting my raisin collecting needs. A+

Empty Slate
The author of this book could accurately be called "a minimalist's minimalist. The general tone is light and airy. However, for a book published this recently, it suffers from a total absence of irony.

Use it for anything...
Beautiful book for a journal, very compact (maybe a little more so than journals I've had in the past), and very well bound...

Simple, functional, and looks good too.
I just received my Blue Blank Book today and I would have to say I'm ver pleased. When you first look at it, it seems almost a bit too thin; but as you flip through the pages you start to see it has plenty of room for all of your writings. When you first open this book, you realize that the title "Blank Book" means just that: Blank Book. There is absolutely no writing or inscriptions from front to back - minus the very back of the book at the bottom where there is a small title saying "Anything Book" along with an ISBN number. The inside of the book, along with the first page is goldish yellow in color that is thicker than the rest of all the pages. This is then follwed by 160 pages of white, clean paper - perfect for writing. The pages seem thick enough so that a pen will not bleed through. The seperating lines are a light gray color about a 1/4" in seperation.
All in all I'm very happy with my purchase. ... I plan on purchasing several more.

A magnificiant piece of craftmanship
I would have to say that I will definatley be looking foward to the 2nd edition of this book. It was well written, easy to read, and to understand for those out there who do not possess a great deal of knowladge about amps. Zach Fjestad, a new and upcoming author, definatly shows that he has what it takes to put out a sucessfull book. Watch for other things by him in the future.

Guitar World Magazine
Oddly enough, before this new 1st Edition, no such manual ever existed for the vintage amp market. Over the years, buyers and sellers alike have had to possess either a gurulike knowledge of the market, or, as is more frequently the case, rely on conjecture and guesswork to determine what different amplifiers are worth.
So it's with a great sigh of relief that we welcome the Blue Book of Guitar Amplifiers - this guide boasts more than 300 pages and features interviews with experts, a glossary of amp-related terms, a full color photo gallery, concise manufacturer histories, and most importantly, current real market values of innumerable amps, from Acoustic (remember them?) to Zapp (no, I've never heard of them either). Of course, this 1st Edition provides the going price for virtually every mode of Fender, Hiwatt, Marshall, Supro, and Vox, and boasts a section devoted to speaker cabinets. Pretending you know what you're talking about has never been easier!

The Little BookThat COULD!
They said it couldn't be done. They said compiling a comprehensive book of guitar amplifier descriptions and values would be too daunting a task, given the huge number of variables to be considered. There must be a jillion amps out there!

Undaunted, Blue Book Publications has made a striking first edition of just such a book. In the traditional Blue Book Publications style, this book offers interesting interviews with industry insiders and celebrities, beautiful color photography of some fine amps, and TONS of information about guitar amps from almost every known maker. (No, not EVERY amp is in the book. Nor is EVERY word in the DICTIONARY. My guess is that susequent editions will be even richer.)

If you haunt the pawn shops looking for guitar amps, you need this book!

Second Edition of a Beautiful Volume on Marbles !
This second edition is updated for 2,000. 190 pages with hundreds of large, full color, sharp photos. Major topics include: Who Can You Trust?, Manufacturers, Antique and Machine Mades, Rarities, Marble Boxes, Christmas Cards, Clubs, Paper Items, etc, etc. A great reference for marble fans.

A Must For the Beginning Collector
Grist has made it easy for young and old alike to discover the wonderful world of marble collecting--without getting taken to the cleaners. Not only does this volume throughly describe how to identify various marbles, it pictures many of the common marble varieties with very clear, full color, closeup photographs. Especially beneficial in identification is Grist's description of the manufacturing process which helps one understand why different marbles are marked the way they are and dispells a common myth that marbles must be perfect to be valuable. This volume did not earn a fifth star only because it seemed so short, but it is indeed a great addition to a collector's library.

"The" guide for marble games, sets & piece collectors.
Everett Grist's Big Book Of Marbles appears in its second edition to provide excellent photos lending to marble identification: a fine art. Pages identify styles, makers, and include values for games and sets.

fun fun fun
i hate thins book. we had it once. it didnt stand a chance. me and my brothers and some of our freinds totaly destroyed it. we tore it, threw it against a nail in the wall, hid it under stuffed animals and put it in the cieling. we still cant find it, even though we did this years ago. heh heh heh....

The Family Book of Manners
I found this book in the library and brought it home to read with my 11 year old. At first he was full of animosity, thinking he was above it, then he started to really get into it. By the middle of the book I knew I had to have a copy for the home. Fortunately I was able to buy a used copy at Amazon. The book is currently out of print. It is a wonderful manners book for the Christian family, full of good solid advice and fun to read.

Extremely user friendly & well organized! I highly recommend
After reviewing several books on etiquette and manners, I found this to be the easiest to use. It is specifically geared to families and includes some cute illustrations to emphasize the points. The book is laid out with topics that range from 1 to 3 pages and covers everything from introductions to conversation starters; manners at fast food restaurants to gourmet restaurants. Every morning, I read one page from the book to my two children (ages 2 & 5) and practice one of the principles read on the page. For example, both of my children now know the 5 S's of introduction (Stand, Smile, Shake, See {look in the eyes}, and Say {It's nice to meet you}. If you're looking for a great book to teach manners, common courtesy, etiquette, and the reason why behind the manners, this is the book for you!

A helpful reference tool.
This book probably won't appear on anyone's "must have" list, will never be considered a necessary component of a comprehensive cookbook library. However, I refer to it often and have found it useful. I acquired this cookbook several years ago as a gift and I'm glad I own it.

good resource- weak recipes
In the years that I've had this cookbook, I've always been grateful for the illustrated glossary featured in the page margins and the handy information about ingredients at the beginning of each section, but I think I've only been inspired to use one of the recipes. All-in-all, this is a reference worth having, but not the only cookbook you'll ever need.

Beautifully illustrated; not enough information for me.
At first glance this book is a ten but because of the limited information in it I have downgraded that to a seven.
If you arenew to adventurous cuisine this book will guide you in areas previous unexplored. I personally found that, while I appreciated the beautiful color photos, I would have much preferred more food information. For example, one entry explains that something is made from almond paste but does not explain how to make almond paste. There is no separate entry under 'Almond Paste'. Some information; not enough; beautful photos. A good getting-started book.

Inappropriate themes for young readers
Unlike Henry Hikes to Fitchburg (an instant favorite) or Henry Builds a Cabin (great bedtime story for our four-year-old), Henry Climbs a Mountain caused nightmares and mistrust.

I did not expect to have to delay bedtime to explain the concepts of slavery, taxes, and jail. A pre-schooler is not equipped to understand these issues. Especially difficult was explaining how the police--standards of helpfulness and good guys in our household--could put a good person in jail. If you're a child, how do you know the police won't come put you in jail, like they did Henry?

The fundamental message of the book, that civil disobedience is a way to fight injustice, is premature for the child audience of this book. A person must understand obedience, authority, and the reasons for rules and laws before making the significant political statement of political disobedience. No young child would understand the different between civil disobedience and simple disobedience, and it's unfair to make them draw that distinction.

Further, the premise that one should try to change unfair laws through lawful means has been completely skipped. Apparently, civil disobedience through refusal to pay taxes is the only means of political discourse available to Henry the bear (though as I recall, not to Henry David Thoreau).

Henry Climbs a Mountain has gone to a high shelf where it will remain for at least several years. Not appropriate for children under 9, but written at kindergarten reading level.

The Bear Grows Up
As the third of this illustrator's riffs on themes from Thoreau (this time, a take on HDT's famous night in jail), "Henry Climbs a Mountain" is not immediately as satisfying as the first two ("Henry Hikes to Fitchburg" and "Henry Builds a Cabin"). The illustrations have lost some of the joy that distinguishes the first two books. The colors seem more subdued and the scenes less captivating. (One picture in particular, where Henry begins to imagine his way into the jail-cell wall, is positively awkward.)

That said, "Henry Climbs" is the most resonant of the three. For a book of some thirty-two pages, there's a lot going on here: a "Harold and the Purple Crayon"-like meditation on art and creativity; a parable on freedom and slavery; even a comment (I think) on compassion and interconnectedness. It's no wonder this book isn't as fun as the first two! But it's still far from somber. Johnson's insertion of small creatures throughout, especially Henry's fellow cellmate (a mouse), brightens the mood considerably, and the whole book ends on a two-page spread that's appropriately vernal in its color and hope.

The Henry who stopped for blueberries on the way to Fitchburg and still arrived in time for a moonlight sit with his friend has changed. (I'd say he's not just for kids anymore, but then, he never really was.) It's good, though, to see this bear growing up just a little. One misses the ecstatic illustrations of "Fitchburg" and "Cabin," but I think "Climbs" will stick with the reader longer. This is one of the most intelligent picture books of the year--a worthy successor to Johnson's first two books and, like the others, a wonderful way to re-energize even a jaded adult's fondness for Thoreau.

A beautiful look at social justice
Have you ever wondered how to bring up the issue of social injustice to your children so that they will understand how important it is to strive for justice in this world? Heh, that's a bit far fetched, but this book is a beautiful introduction to standing up for what you think is right. Henry is going to climb a mountain, but he is put in jail when he refuses to pay taxes because his taxes would support slavery. In jail, Henry goes into a dream world in which he is climbing a mountain. When he gets to the top, he meets another bear that has no shoes. He asks the bear where he is going, and he gives the bear his shoes when he hears that he is walking to the north star. Henry goes back down the mountain and suffers pain from the sharp rocks and pebbles on the way down. When he is at the bottom, he says, "I feel like I'm at the top of the mountain!"

It introduces children to being kind to others and giving up our own comfort in order to ease the pain of another. It is a beautiful story with beautiful illustrations.

While reading this book, you can bring up Martin Luther King, Jr. because he was jailed in Birmingham when he was fined for his "illegal" protest, which was perfectly legal and peaceful. Talk about how people can help those in need. Talk of how kindness is more beneficial than selfishness.

I recommend this book for children five years of age or older. Adults can learn something from it, too!

Comic Values Annual 2003
The ratings of each comic is very good, however the biggest problem is that the index gives wrong pages as to the location of many of the comics. Then too the binding is coming apart after only 45 days use. It would be a good thing to offer a replacement that is correct and better bound.

A fine price guide
There are plenty of price guides for comic books. I like this one because it seems the cleanest to read and follow.

Misprint... But excellent Guide!
Overall, the Comics Values Annual 2003 is an excellent Guide for Comic Book Collectors. It is easy to read and understand. The only thing that bothers me is that the Page Numbers are off by 28 Pages compared to the Index. This must be due to the 28-Page Part in the front of the book. The page numbering should have been started over on Page 29 (where the actual Price Guide begins). I keep this guide together with a calculator, look up the comic in the Index and add 28 Pages to that.

I'm surprised this book received such a high rating!
I was very disappointed with this book. I bought it for my son, Nicholas, thinking he would be excited about a book with his name in it. The story is about a boy, who has very wealthy parents, who obviously care more about their money than anything else. When Nicholas is shipwrecked and lands, alone, on an island, he is happy to be away from his family. His parents worry at first and offer a reward to find him, but as time passes they spend the reward money on more jewels. How awful! I could just imagine what kind of message this would send to my sweet 5 year old son. A terrible book!

A fun fantasy based on values and wishes
Poor Nicholas is the child of boring well-moneyed parents. He hates the wealthy life and longs for real adventure. Well.. In this excellently-illustrated book he gets it, finding happiness and fun on a desert island.

The best thing about this book (aside from the great story and fun illustrations) is it's boldness. It dares to express the fantasies that all children have at times of escape from unhappiness into adventure, companionship, and a simpler life.

Stodgy billionaire parents will not like this book!

A GREAT Book!
One of my favorite books as a child, a creative story. Ann McGovern did a great job on this wonderful story. And to accent the wonderful writing, Tomie de Paola did wonderful illustrations.
