Concise reference work on this collectable topic
Kreider's work on collectable valentines is one I reach for often when doing research on vintage cards. She provides an extensive history of the topic, a good glossary, and the book is crammed full of excellent photos of a wide range of samples. The only problem with it is that the prices shown do not reflect the influx of vintage valentines onto the various online auctions sites, and so seem a bit high. Otherwise, it's quite a good buy.

Awesome
I'm a big fan of Nancy Rue's, but even I was reluctant to read the non-fiction companions to the Lily books. I decided to give the "Values and Virtues" book a try, since it is the companion to "Lily Speaks!" The book is a pleasant surprise. When I was younger I thought of books like this as "dorky." With this one, readers not only learn about intergrity, they also learn about how to apply it to themselves and their walk with God. You won't find any boring stories here about values and virtues--instead the book is full of scripture references and helps the reader analyze their strong points and their weaknesses through a series of quizzes and "questions" from Lily and her gang. From there, Rue encourages readers to talk to God about their weak points in intergrity, and Rue encourages readers to find an adult to talk to about the Bible and everything in it. I highly recommend this book for the age it's intended for--the 8-12 year old age group.

Read This Book and Make Values Stick!
The Values Book is an excellent source of information and activities to encourage values in your child. The authors cite changes in modern culture and use fun, creative methods to instill traditional values. Each chapter begins with a familiar rhyme recognizing a particular value. The authors then define the value, and discuss why it is important in a child's life. Ways to talk about the value are included, and activities to reinforce the value are suggested. At the end of each chapter, extra resources are listed concerning the value discussed. In an easy-to-read format, the book discusses 16 values like loyalty, respect, patience and cooperation. Parents will appreciate advice for ways children may react to values, and teachers will be pleased to find helpful hints to celebrate values in the classroom. Children will benefit from the home activities, like growing a garden and making up new solutions to problems seen on television. In addition to improving their grasp on teaching specific principles, parents themselves may find they have gained a better respect for values. Through helping children incorporate values in their everyday lives, parents will play a key role model for making the teachings stick with their children for years.

Veggicational Series fun for parents too!
This book series is so much fun for my toddler to listen to - and just as much fun to read! The rhyming rhythm makes it a great attention grabber (and keeper) for even the most active toddler. In addition, it teaches valuable lessons about letters, colors, shapes and more and tosses in just a dash of God to reassure your child that he has a hand in all that we do! I definately recommend this book for anyone with small children. The series is recommended for ages 4 - 8, but my 2-year-old enjoys it just as much as my older toddler! My 9-year-old daughter even enjoys reading it to the younger ones!

--Morning Glories-Dumpling Squash and Moon Flowers--
The cover of this book really grabs you with the lushness of a summer day. A rustic wooden gate is framed by a wrought iron arbor, which sits on top of brick columns. Lush pink climbing roses and lavender colored clematis are cascading over the entire structure. A beautiful garden book is the perfect way to spend a cold winter's day and Vines & Climbers didn't disappoint me.

The book is divided into Five Chapters: (1) Looking Up -- In this part we're given the use and value of climbing plants. (2) The Supporting Player--This refers to the bones of the garden and any fences, walls, tall trees and other structures that are on site. (3) Growing Up -- This chapter discusses the essential elements that are needed by every garden: soil, mulch, compost, fertilizers, light, shade and moisture. Some information is also given on pests and diseases. (4) A to Z of Plants --This is the largest part of the book. It gives descriptions of over 120 different plants that include vegetables, fruits and colorful ornamentals. (5) Vines & Climbers In the Garden--This Chapter outlines different designs and gives planting suggestions for the home garden.

I enjoyed reading Vines & Climbers and liked the idea of using fruit and vegetable vines along with ornamental ones. The photographs are very attractive! My favorite picture is of a weather beaten doghouse that's completely covered with a gorgeous blooming nasturtium vine. The dog's face is even peeking out from his front door.

Excellent Oral History!
So many textbooks are a dry series of graphs and charts with very little of interest to the everyday reader. This book, while not a texbook per se, teaches in a lively "You Are There" kind of way. The stories in this book, as well as others in this series, are taken from people who actually lived during these trying times. This is the way history and basic social studies should be taught; children (and adults!) would learn ten times as much and have fun doing it!

The vintage photgraphs scattered throught the book are a very good collection gleaned from the people whose stories are shared as well as old stock photos.

This sort of book is one to be treasured, but one that rarely comes along. Reiman Publications has a series of these books on similar topics (the home front during WWII, motoring memories, women being the backbone of the family, etc.) Buy them ALL and keep them close to home. They will enrich your lives immeasurably.

What would you do If? 101 Five-Minute Devotions
This book is an excellent tool to use to talk to your kids about everything from being a follower, and doing what "everyone else does", getting in trouble just for the attention, peer pressure, and just about any other scenario that would come up in everyday life. Honesty, lying, acceptance of those that are "different", respecting others' property, gossiping, using money wisely, consequences of actions.,etc. All are done in short segments and biblically based with a daily scripture to back up whatever the given topic is. All are true-to-life situations and presented in a way to be thought-provoking. Intended for the 6-12 age group. This book is the best I have seen for a devotional type book that kids look forward to, and won't cause (as many) moans and groans.

A lively and lighthearted story
Who Shares? is a lively and lighthearted story by Ewa Lipniacka about learning the true spirit of sharing with one's siblings. Young rabbits Jack and Georgina do not get along very well - but with time and patience, they learn the rewards of sharing both good and bad things about life with each other. A warm-hearted and positive tale which is wonderfully enhanced by the colorfully illustrations of Jane Massey, Who Shares? is recommended to family, school, and community library picture book collections.
