This book is a "must have" for all first grade teachers.
I absolutely love this book. The ideas are inspiring. And the instructions are simple and easy to understand. This book is especially helpful if you work with a paraprofessional/teacher's aide. I can just give this book to my partner and she knows exactly what I want.

Much to Think About
For beginning Go players there is a dearth of material on what exactly it takes to increase one's skill. It is all very well to talk about 'whole board' play, but it takes considerable experience to lift one's eyes above the dust of battle long enough to see that there is action all over the board and that everything is related. It only slowly dawns on the player that more points may be made by playing elsewhere than can be gained by flogging a local group to death.

Even after one knows that this is true, even after one has studied some basic opening strategies, it is often difficult to for a player to understand how he or she can arrive at the middle game already badly behind. The 'Power Builder' series is intended to remedy this situation by studying overall opening strategy and then following through to other aspects of the complex game of Go. In each case, Wang Runan goes that little bit deeper that is intended to drive a player past the intermediate skill level.

This is the first volume released of three volumes, a translation of the first 13 lessons of a set of 34. I find it remarkable that they were originally based on a Chinese television program presented by Wang RuNan. It says something for the overall popularity of Go in the Orient that a course as advanced as this would appear as popular media. Here in the U.S. it would be hard to find a program on Chess, let alone a less popular game like Go.

James Dee has done an excellent job of translating the classroom style of the program into a text with a similar feel. I find the discussion exceptionally clear, even though the subject matter is not always straightforward. It is enjoyable, enlightening reading that, applied carefully, will work positive changes in your playing style. This is a book I expect to read many times, and I hope that the following volumes appear in short order.

An Introduction
Five years ago, this book taught me to play Go. I have read its 92 pages many times since. Is it a great Go book? For what it is, yes. Consider it the manual that should come with a Go board. It tells you how to play, and gives just enough insite to think, "hey, there's more to this whole Go thing than meets the eye.

I will cherish my copy always.

Love these woodplans
Yes, I can be a bit of a neat-nik, but having an ironing board out (even in the laundry room) drives me nuts! I bought these plans and downloaded/printed them within minutes. They are easy to follow, and you just can't beat the convenience. I have yet to complete the project, but I'm well on my way!

It Could Have Been Worse...

Great for adults as well as kids
My 3 year old son loves this book because of the silly things that almost happen to the mouse. I love the book because it helps me put things into perspective in my own life. Just as the mouse is complaining about his minor problem, you see the danger that he narrowly escaped, and yes, it could have been a lot worse. I buy this book as a gift, more for the parents than for the kids.

Non-profits: Rethinking Our Use of Money
All of us in the nonprofit world worry about money. It seems we're constantly trying to balance our finances and our mission. "It's simple! : money matters for the nonprofit board member" is a powerful tool for aligning our two "bottom lines", fiscal solvency and mission. An easy read, this book is packed with helpful suggestions and novel ideas useful not just to any nonprofit board member but to anyone interested in helping nonprofit organizations realize their potential. I can personally attest to the value of the information. We employed the innovative approaches outlined in "It's simple! : money matters for the nonprofit board member" to successfully secure capital funds for the construction of a state-of-the art marine education facility which enabled us to expand our programs. Without the information you'll find in this volume, we'd still be "Sitting by the dock of the Bay, watching the tides roll away" rather than riding those moving waters to achieve our mission of educating people about the world of water. I recommend this book highly.

Jack and the Beanstalk: Story in a Box

A creative take on a classic tale
My son's name is Jack, and I think we have just about every version of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk on his bookshelf.

When he got this one as a present, I was suprised to see that a publisher had managed to come up with a fresh take on this book. While the story itself is told as the standard tale, the book is unique because it actually comes with little stand up pieces of the characters from the story. This way, my son plays along while we read together, and often just plays with the pieces when we're not reading. What's even better is that the book has its own little drawer to store the pieces in, so we have a better chance of not losing them under the couch cushions. This is such a great book and toy!

An All Time Favorite
This is my 2 year old's favorite book. He takes it in the car, to grandma's, to bed, etc. The story is simple but entertaining for toddlers and preschoolers. James the Engine gets into trouble with some naughty freight cars and it's Thomas to the rescue! A classic board book.

Jemima, Rattle! (Beatrix Potter Baby Books)

Jemima Puddle-Duck is easily rattled--with this combination rattle and board book. Just right for small hands, the curvy-edged book features die-cut holes through each page, making a handle for young "readers"" to grip. And why would they want to grip it? Because once they grip it, they can shake it, and once they shake it, the tiny yellow beads inside the clear plastic window will rattle most pleasingly. Within this noisy book, one of Beatrix Potter's most beloved characters is introduced. Jemima Puddle-Duck, in her blue sunbonnet and elegant shawl, chases bumblebees, splish-splashes in a pond, and lets her feathers fly in the charming 10-page novelty book. Looking for a companion to Miss Puddle-Duck? Meet the mischievous Peter Rabbit in another Beatrix Potter-inspired interactive book, Peter, Rattle!. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

A Child's Pleasure
The simple text and artwork were perfect to keep my daughter's attention as we read this together. The hard board is very sturdy for a toddler's grip. It has been a favorite of hers for over a year!
