Blew me away! The great blowout blew me away. Not knowing what to expect when I bought this book, the author masterfully thrust me into the exciting world of Billy McLaughlin. I found it difficult to put this book down, as I found an almost intimate concern for Billy as he faced many trials and tribulations. This first time author proves to be skillful at describing the physical and meta-physical world where Billy exists. Overall, this tale proves to be a praiseworthy philosophical work. I look forward to reading more from Flaherty, and hope to find Billy in future adventures.
Highly recommendedI consider this book to be a metaphor for a bar fight between a 1980's Norman Mailer, and a young Tim Robbins. It is both realistic and abstract, with an uncanny representation of the human condition. This gritty tale gives us a look at the life of an antihero whom we simultaneously envy and resent. Overall, it's a fast paced read that keeps one pondering the things beyond his/her understanding. I highly recommend it to people ages 16-65.
Great new author! This is an extremely entertaining book with lots of laughs and great discriptions of Lake Tahoe California. If you're looking for a real good read from a new author I would recommend The Great Blowout.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ok, first of all, this is not the only book in the series there is the first one, Tangle in Tiajuana (equally as fab!)and I here that the talented authors plan on writing more brilliant smut (well, it's not tooo smutty, unless that's what you like). And this book is a choose your own adventure, not some lame cartoonish book for book wormish teen wall flowers. It is the kind of book you sit down with some friends and drinks and read aloud to each other, laughing all the way to the end, and then over again with different choices. This is the book that NEVER stops giving. BUy it and live happily forever and ever.
A crazy ride!I loved Choose your own adventure as a kid -- but this brings it to a whole new level. This time, you are a contestant in a Miss America pageant, and have to make choices to try to win. And winning is hard! Unlike most pageants, this is all sex, drugs and even rock and roll, with a healthy dose of post-feminism to boot. Loved every ending.

A riveting true story - the stuff of which legends are made!In Blowout, Bob Orrell recounts the dramas of life on board "Hewett A", a North Sea oil and gas drilling rig. Life on an oil rig is arduous, brutal, highly dangerous. But the men who work there persevere with humor and camaraderie despite the appalling accidents, atrocious weather, and occasional clashes of temper. In Blowout, Orrell's rig suffered a disastrous bowout and he gives a vivid, harrowing account of how rescue boats and helicopters battled gale-force winds and raging seas to evacuate men from the gas-filled platform. There was a tremendous loss of life and Orrell found himself abandoned with only one colleague on the gas and oil spewing rig. When Red Adair (the legendary Texan oil rig firefighter) returned to the rig to cap the well, Orrell was there to man the communications equipment. Blowout is a riveting true story, the stuff of which legends are made.

Better than a birthday cardI liked this collection of pcitures of stars eating birthday and anniversary cake. There are so many pictures and they're all taken on the set. I decided to get this instead of those ridiculously expensive greeting cards.

EntertainingInteresting storyline. I get tired of Laytons characters being the 'best of the best'. None of the main people in his books are ever 'average'. They are the best at whatever they do. While average people aren't very interesting, it would be more realistic if one of them failed at some point in the story.
BlowoutA great techno-thriller! Zackary Scott reminds me of Clive Cussler's "Dirk Pitt". This author has a great future. I brought it on vacation with me, and shared it with three others -- and we all loved it!
A great book, a must read.A fast paced read with an ingenious plot that leaves you guessing till the last few pages. Layton has set the standard for the new era of technology based thrillers.

Good BookAn interesting book about a fascinating but often ignored activity that directly impinges on everyone's lives. Other books on the subject have generally been rants against the oil industry, poorly written from a technical point of view yet great material for a movie (a notable exception being "Tripping the Ballerina"--also available from this site--which would make excellent movie material despite having as its hero a lowly geophysicist). The love interest in "Blowout" seems a bit far-fetched but otherwise I'd definitely recommend it.

Drop the Book and RunI would not recommend this book; I really could not find anything worth the time it took to read it. I only got half way through it and that was about 100 pages too much. There are too many good books out there.
