Sc ience Cooks
Lewis Thomas once remarked that early medicine consisted of trial and error-usually in that order. This delightful book sees cuisine as chaos in the kitchen followed by symmetry at the table. There are menus and serious and semi-serious articles provided by physicists from all over the world. Once you read it you will think seriously of marrying a physicist or at least getting invited to dinner by one.

A Home Made Masterpiece
Upon buying this book, I assumed that it would be just another useless cookbook stowed away in a corner, but hey, it was for a good cause. When I got my copy, I looked inside to see what there was. Little did I know what I would find. There were many recipes, ranging from oriental Chinese food to gourmet Italian cuisine. When I used my first recipe from the book, I was blown away. It has now become a weekly tradition for me and my family. Buy this book; you won't regret it.

A good Beginner's Guide to Disability Awareness
My original intent in buying a couple of copies of the book was to address the architectural aspect of disabilities within the Church. I was pleased, delighted and enlightened by what I learned about my own blindness and insensivity towards the Disability movement in general.

Jennie Block's sensitivity and ability to both "tell a good story' as well as teach awareness is a good beginning in this area. Her vision is bold of what the Church, and Society could be, if others shared this vision and awareness.

She offers a "relational Christology" and uses the stories of healing and miracles in the Bible to good advantage. She even confronts traditional Christian concepts about "healing" today and in past years.

As a first step, this is a wonderful, and accessible read. For someone investigating the field of interest, she will open your eyes to other adjacent areas. She gives a good history of the Disability Movement, and her analysis of liberation theology is comprehendable and used to good effect.

Personally, she made me aware of areas within myself that need work and for that I'm grateful.

Enlightening
My reading of this excellent book broadened my limited vision of people with disabilities significantly. I am in the process of launching a capital campaign in our parish for a "Face Lift" of the interior of our parish church built in the mid-1930s. Thanks to this text I am making changes to the Sanctuary for access by wheel chairs. The church is already accessible. I am most grateful for the education is received by reading Copious Hosting.

Best Book on DIsabilites and Religion
This book provides a concise history of the care and treatment of individuals with disabilities. The author offers a logical and workable philosophy for the Church to address the unique and mundane needs of individuals with disabilities.

The book is an invaluable reference to readers with an interest in the disabilities movement. THe book is also of great value to members of the religious community seeking philosopical and practical observations relating to disabilities.

The book is extremely well written. The author shows humor and charm while tackling a very serious subject.

Excellent book if you have no....
If you have experience in writing device driver (for any OS) this book is not the best choice. But if you don't, this book is an excellent one. This book takes you through each and every step involved in building various kinds of device driver for the system. The content is written to make sure you understand the concept(s).

A hands-on and practical guide to low-level programming
This book from Jean Labrosse is right in line with the author's other book (Micro-C/OS II): simple, right to the point and tremendously useful. The book really demystifies some concepts too often omitted in other books, such as real-time systems concepts. The author provides numerous pictures, which are far easier to understand that any written explanations. I can't wait to read more from Labrosse.

Excellent content and easy to follow.
An excellent book for those new to Embedded Systems concepts. Not really for experienced users but still a good solid reference. This book doesn't assume that you know everything already like most books. By using these ready to use C modules all the user needs to do is to make some minor changes in order to get a project off the ground. Concepts are explained very clearly with no nonsense and without being too simplistic. Topics are interesting. It even utilizes a real time kernel. ( his own but that's OK ) I highly recommend this book.

Slightly outdated but exceptional information
The book is very well written and understandable. The illustrations and photographs are top notch. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking knowledge about cylinder heads and the modification there of. Many of the techniques illustrated in this book can be applied to other types of cylinder heads with favorable results. I would like to see an update to this book that would include porting information on some of the many new cylinder heads and manufacturers that have hit the market since this book was published.

Vizard does it again
As with many of David Vizards books this one exceeded my expectations. It opened new avenues of thought regarding head modifications and then proceeded to explore those avenues thoroughly. Mr. Vizard is one of the few that shares his knowledge in a manner that very few do. To many "experts" under estimate our ability to learn and understand, or else they don't want to go through the bother. Mr. Vizard does so in a very convincing manner. Thanks for all the horsepower, torque, and reliability, David. This book covered porting, hardware, modification in your own shop, and can be utilized to any level you wish. I keep returning to it to advance in my own practice.

A must have item, very thorough and very interesting reading
I have been searching for a book like this for years! It contains everything you need to know to be able to successfully port your own cyclinder heads. David Vizard has done an excellent job of explaining, in a language that most people should be able to understand, the principles of cyclinder head design and how they function. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and all other books David has written (I own all of his books, and not one has disappointed me).

Maybe not that good...
I'll offer a dissenting opinion. I didn't find the information in the book to be all that informative. There's little if anything different from what the manufacturers claim in their literature. Some of the sections seemed to be direct quotes from the manufacturers. Too brief, too many short blurbs. For me, it didn't help to distinguish between the wheat and the chaff in the aftermarket.

Excellent book with good mix of detail and media
Tom Currao put together an excellent book! I found each page to be exciting and filled with relevant detail. I was also able to identify with Tom's book because I also use the Mr. Gasket Desktop Dyno application for "figuring" out engine combinations. A handy list of suppliers is provided as is also an index. I feel that Tom's book has the best opportunity to become the defacto standard for replacing the now dated How to HOTROD Big-block CHEVYS book. I think that the book will be of special appeal to "grassroots" racers like me who need to be budget conscious while trying to go as fast as possible.

Lot of Tips
This book contains lot of recommendations during engine building. Only somebody with enough experience could write it. Don't miss it!

A must have although quite technical.
This is the textbook for one of my classes. It is a well written book that is quite technical in some points. An example "X.25 Packet network: provides low-speed, switched, duplex, data-only transport. Best solution when poor quality transmission links are present." Parrot this when anyone asks you what an X.25 network is and you'll look like a star. The only problem is to understand how all that fits into a concept which you can grasp your brain around. This book is excellent to have if you already are a technician and/or have a engineering/science background. If you're new to the industry, you'll find yourself drowning in technical terms and concepts. The book also takes side trips in wave-form analysis which the reader could only fully understand if he or she happens to have an oscilliscope handy. Other parts are quite dry and you'll be searching quite a long time for an oasis of understanding. In short, this book is great to have if you need to move beyond the more user friendly books and need a concise reference book. BTW: I can't recommend highly enough "Newton's Telecom Dictionary." As a "dictionary" it quite more readable (and enjoyable) than this Telecommunications "Primer." (Note the liberal definition of "primer"!)

I have had this book for 4 years.
It has been a corner stone in my telco career education, despite my degree. Someone said that this book is part of their class work. Great, I've been saying that it should be for 3 1/2 years.

Ditto on the other positive statements/reviews. I enjoy reading and have searched for THE book on telecommunications for 7 years. If you are "in" or part of telco, this IS 'THE' book. READ: good diagrams; good descriptions; and good interrelations of systems.

The only thing I don't look forward to, is highlighting the new edition I have to buy.

Outstanding Overview of Telecom Details!
I really enjoyed reading Telecommunications Primer. Without a doubt it is one of the best introductory texts on the subject of emerging telecom technologies available.

The author provides a level of detail that is missing in most other "off the shelf" telecom/datacom books, without overdoing the math/EE "gore". This book is perfect for someone with a science/Engineering background who needs to get up to speed on voice and datacom quickly.

Alekhine's Block: The Tactician's Handbook
Published in Paperback by Pickard & Son Pub (March, 1997)
Author: Victor Charushin
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $14.95
Average review score:

Charushin is a Genius!
After studying this book's introduction very, very carefully you can pick up some tips to enhance your basic chess middlegame play. Using that knowledge as you play through a game or two in this book over and over day by day can do wonders for your surprise springing ability! You must be patient with yourself, though, as you branch out into the real world of over-the-board chess and lose game after game in trying to win with this "jaw-dropping" tactic! The instruction you receive from Charushin (after the introduction) is strictly through stark notation of games. But, being that you understand the complete idea of Alekhine's Block after reading the introduction, you come to see that Charushin really didn't need to weigh down this slim gem of a chess book with commentary on other aspects of the game. Your first impression after seeing the multitude of stark chess notation might lead you to think otherwise, but, I can see how Charushin did a good job in his categorizing the games which leads to understanding the main idea; Alekhine's Block. I would have to further say a big BEWARE to chess beginners and say be honest with yourself and don't read this book if you are a beginner. Using Alekhine's Block (and even learning how to use it through this book) takes some understanding of chess so that you can use it effectively; you need to understand what's going on in the chess play that leads up to Alekhine's Block!! You also have to know when not to even try to use Alekhine's Block.

Excellent but not for beginners
It's too bad Mr Charushin does not provide any comments to the wonderful collection of games in this book. If you riffle through the pages itlooks like a dictionary, just one game after another. It would have really been awesome if Victor Charushin would have had provided the How's and Why's of each move, like Bruce Pandolfini does in his books. Otherwise a good collection of games containing examples of Alekhine's tactic. A few of the games in the book played by Kasparov and Fischer are well worth looking at. Beginners should start elsewhere.

Excellent Book
This is an excellent book for those that are Class B or higher (I'm currently class A) that are looking to push their skills one step farther. Before reading this book, I never even considered such moves that would at first appear to just merely drop a piece. Books like this and "Positional Sacrifices" by Neil McDonald are helping me see more into a position than merely looking at trades and moving strictly to squares that aren't under attack. The games are entertaining as well. However, tactics of this nature are probably a bit too complicated for lower rated players.

Some of the Pictures Are Good
I like some of the pictures. But where the days are shown, I like them to start with Sunday and finish with Saturday. This calendar starts with Monday, and finishes with Sunday. And it shows the dates just with little numbers. There are no boxes to write in. Not the best calendar for kids, because it's hard to read the days.

Great Calendar! CHEAP Price!
This 2001-2002 calendar is great! I just got mine in today and I am totally satisfied! It does not look like the picture shown above though. Instead, it is a newer picture of Britney with brighter colors. This is a VERY cheap price for this calendar, so I would recommend it to any Britney fan out there!

THIS BRITNEY SPEARS METAL BLOCK CALENDER FOR 2001 IS GREAT!
The metal block 2001 calender is a must have for any true Britney Spears fan. You get some of the best photos of her. If you enjoyed the 2000 calender you'll absolutly love this one for 2001.

Handbook of Training Evaluation and Measurement Methods (Imp
I have been for more than 10 years working with clients in the training & education area and it is important to measure the ROI on training. Corporate accounts needs to have tangible ways to compare different training initiatives and this books helps consultants and clients to show results.

Everything you need to know!
Many books on program evaluation focus on complicated techniques, theories, and processes. Phillips' 'Handbook' presents training evaluation in a practical, useful manner. Each chapter clearly presents the whys and hows of training evaluation. He presents the research fundamentals, but also considers the feasibility of many processes used by researchers--offering options to those of us who need evaluation, but work in the 'real-world'. This is by far the best book on evaluation!

Best handbook on training evaluation available.
The 3rd edition of the Handbook of Training Evaluation and Measurement Methods is the most comprehensive text on the process to evaluate training programs. The book is used in organizations as well as colleges and universities to help practitioners and managers of training evaluation understand the process as well as the importance of evaluating all training programs. If it's worth doing -- it's worth measuring! This book is definitely worth buying!

It's a guy thing...
It seemed like a prescription for enjoyment. The main character and I are the same age, have lived and travelled in some of the same places, and were even at the University of Oregon at the same time. I also write all the time though I don't have a burning passion to publish.

Did I like the book? It was only OK. I appreciated the short chapters that took me into other spaces at lunch hour. But, it was a familiar whimper without any breakthrough thoughts for me. California angst. Middle-aged angst. Writer's angst. Self-help angst.

Perhaps my lack of enthusiasm was due to my gender. For a woman it's interesting to be inside the mind of a guy, but in this case I was happy when the well-written denouement finally came and I closed this book. I would rather be rereading Arthur Rosenfeld (!!!) or Craig Carozzi for male points of view.

Sutton should keep writing; he has a lot to say to some people. I'm just not on his wavelength.

More Than Writer's Block
Joe is the master of the personal essay. In a handful of pages, he tells a small tale and ends each with an epiphany.

You can buy this book to see someone work through a case of writer's block. But I would highly recommend it if you want to read some small masterpieces which happen to have been written at the rate of three pages a day.

Great Read!! Funny, Thoughtful, Real
Morning Pages is about a longtime writer with writer's block. It's a great tie-in with Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way and with the novels of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and William Saroyan. Cameron says to write three pages as fast as you can each morning upon rising for twelve weeks to silence the internal censor, thereby melting the writer's block. Garcia Marquez writes five pages daily, even stopping mid-sentence at the end of the fifth page. Ben Halaby, the protagonist, writes about his block as he is writing a book. The evolution of a novel is a protagonist as well˜˜Halaby doesn't even realize he's writing one! It is fascinating and deeply moving in that Halaby's whole life seeps onto the page. You get a sense of a man's view of the world growing up in America in the second half of the 20th Century. Reading Morning Pages was like eating my favorite dessert. I couldn't eat it fast enough and was afraid of finishing it.
