Modern Block Printed Textiles (The Decorative Arts Library)

Get Weaving.
Modern Block Printed Textiles is a small publication dealing with successful exponents of this method of printing textiles in the United Kingdom and the United States, in the fist half of the 20th century. Although the technique is simple, Powers' book and the designs themselves amply display the artistic and creative results achieved. There are plenty of quality reproductions to illustrate the text, which is a brief but facsinating introduction to and record of the works of these textile designers.

Powers' focus is the social scene of the times, that made a 'kitchen-table' craft a highly successful expression of sophisticated artistic talent. Textile designers very often remain anonymous, probably because of the 'craft' associations and because many of these designers were women. Importantly Powers indentifies and has made some significant art history available for the art/craft scene of these times. Interestingly enough, Powers has been able to interview some of the artists from the 30s, 40s and 50s, often still practicing, at the time of the preparation of this book, which adds to the relevance of textile block printing (and any other craft) right now. This is important for contempory artists who feel that artistic and creative expression have roles in enhancing the quality of everyday life for everyone. This book will widen the perspectives of artists interested in such work, and these designers are excellent role models.

The use of these textiles, and the commissions for them are also interesting. Powers I think is very interested in a block printing revival for textiles specifically, and fine craft generally, and this small but inspirational book, with its excellent visual examples and rewarding text is an outstanding achievement for the field. Any designer or printmaker would want to own this book.

Another great "read" by Dr. Block!
MOMMY OR DADDY: WHOSE SIDE AM I ON? is not only innovative, it's original. Aside from Dr. Block's informative writing, his ability to keep the reader interested is impressive. Formulated as a guide, this book enables quick reference to many parent/child related issues that arise even in the most healthy families. Dr. Block touches upon a vast array of topics, including a quizz for assessing Parenting Patterns, and through his guide, the reader will quickly realize how important it is to recognize patterns that both parents and children develop within the family. By understanding how negative behaviors are influenced by these patterns, parents can take the necessary steps to correct them with the help of Dr. Block's remedies. DEFINITELY A BOOK WORTH READING!

These blocks are a great gift for babies!
This is not a book but a set of stacking building blocks that fit inside a box with a handle, about 8 inches on a side. The blocks go from tiny to large and depict "1,2 buckle my shoe..." rhymes, alphabets and numbers, bright patterns and colorful pictures. They are laminated, sturdy cardboard. The box reads 1-5 years, but our son is only now 18 months and he has enjoyed at least looking at them since birth. The smallest block in the stacking set is a bit tiny, so I took that one out of the set until he's older. Overall this is a fantastic toy and one of his favorite to carry around and play with - It is great for travel, and would be a welcome gift for a new baby or even a 1st, 2nd or 3rd Birthday gift!

Mustang & Ford Small Block V8, 1962-1969: Volumes 1 & 2 Combined

An encyclopedia of pix & data for the restoration crowd
If, like me, you find yourself involved in the performance restoration of a '60s-era Ford engine compartment, and lament the fact that you didn't have the opportunity to squirrel away all the original factory shop manuals, Technical Service Bulletins, parts catalogs, shop tips, master cross-reference lists, showroom catalogs, and/or magazine articles about Ford's small block V8 then Bob Mannel's book is the answer to your dreams.

Ever offer to help your friend with getting their showroom-fresh ponycar to run like new...and then raise the hood and look in dismay at 30+ years of accumulated band-aids, temporary fixes, and well-intentioned but incorrect part substitutions...and wonder where will you ever find the hard data needed to get the engine bay looking & running the way that the original engineers intended?

Even if you have yet to get back into the car of your youth, but are seriously thinking of buying someone else's restoration, then this book could save you a lot of money. With it you can ensure that the 'HiPo 289' under the hood is the real thing, and you aren't spending your hard-earned money on a sheep in wolf's clothing.

If you can identify with the above (or even just know someone in this predicament) then I strongly encourage you to also purchase this book.

There are over 700 pages filled with almost 3000 separate pictures documenting how the engineers made running changes to all aspects of the engine & engine-driven accessories on the small V8s, from it's debut in 1962 through the end of the decade.

In addition, there are hundreds of tables, graphs, & drawings, covering everything from all the different radiator fans used in production to graphs covering distributor curves to listing what size main jets belong where in the original carburetor(s).

All the above may sound like trivial pursuit for motorheads, but to me there is nothing as satisfying as helping a friend to get their old pony car to run as good as/or better than new. (Don't forget about those TSBs covering cooling, carburetion, vibration, and other common problems that were figured out and fixes developed *after* these cars left the production line -- you would be surprised how many of these vintage cars never had the updates installed because the mechanics of the day would explain the quirky behavior with the infamous phrase: "That can't be fixed -- They ALL do that!" ;-)

Last but not least, I met the author at a recent Ford@Carlisle show, and after thumbing through his book I was incredulous -- it has the look & feel of the T.O.s I used to use when working on USAF fighters. If you have ever been frustrated by blurry pictures, vague writing at the conceptual level, or a complete lack of reference to real part numbers, then you will be just as pleasantly surprised by this book as I was.

The author purportedly spent 17 years gathering data & writing this book, and it shows. Simply incredible.

Fabulous!!!
Professional golfer Lee Ofsted has just landed an instructor's job assisting fellow pro Jackie Piper at a beautiful Rhode Island resort. Her job is to provide golf lessons to the employees of a marine salvage company. To Lee, this is an easy way to combine a vacation with making an easy grand a day for a week. However, the anticipated idyllic week goes sour at the fourth hole when Darlene Chappell, the spouse of the salvage company president, Stuart, is almost kidnapped. Soon afterward, Stuart is found murdered.

Lee and her friend begin to investigate the murder. To their amazement, many people had the motive to kill Stuart. However, as she gets closer to the truth, Lee literally finds herself in a sudden death game in which her life is the ultimate stake.

The third Lee Ofsted mystery novel is a fabulous who-done-it due to the brilliant characterizations of the lead protagonist, her associates, and all the duffers hooking their swing. The story line is interesting as Charlotte and Aaron Elkins scribes a fabulous amateur sleuth tale. This reviewer recommends to lovers of golf and amateur sleuth stories, all three books (the previous two are WICKED SLICE and ROTTEN LIES) because they are superb mysteries.

Best commentary on Judges available
It isn't simply that I buy everything Daniel Block publishes. I do. But, apart from the fact that he is a fine scholar, a clear-headed exegete and a solid communicator, this commentary is a must-buy for any student of the OT simply because it represents one of the few works out there on Judges. Until recently, Judges suffered from a drought of commentators. The last thorough treatment on Judges was written by Robert Boling for the Anchor series and that was back in 1975.

Block's commentary gives the reader both balanced and well-informed comments on the text's meaning as well as philological notes on the Hebrew (kept conveniently in the footnotes). It delves deeply for the more scholarly concerns, yet can be accessed by an informed layperson. Block's familiarity and usage of secondary sources, which are also listed in the footnotes, are invaluable for further study. While some quite commendable commentaries on Judges have recently appeared since Block's work, none have come close to eclipsing his fine contribution.
