Through no deliberate intent, I've been reading the Matt Scudder series backwards. I started with A Long Line of Dead Men (#11) then went on the Even the Wicked (#12) and that's all well and good (I've done the same thing with his Burglar series, having read #'s 4, 5, 6, and 7 in that order), but then I dropped back to Eight Million Ways to Die (#5) because it was the only audiobook my library had.

Now I've come to #2, this book. It's very interesting to see Scudder's life in this way, because I already have insight into his future actions. In the later ones, Matt is a recovering alcoholic, in Eight Million, he begins his treatment after deciding to do something about it. However, in Midst, he doesn't yet seem to be aware that he even has a problem. Although he's never far from his next drink, when someone mentions the word "alcoholic," he rationalizes it away.

The mystery is never the reason to read Lawrence Block (even though I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate that because he works hard to create the mystery), it's the characters. And Scudder is not exception. I don't even remember what the mystery was in Eight Million Ways to Die, but it stand out as my favorite because of the way Block writes about Scudder's struggle with realization.

Matt Scudder is one of the most interesting characters in fiction, but I haven't read all his books because they are invariably dark and I have to be in the mood for them. But read them I will.

A note on the audiobook presentation: Alan Sklar's voice fits this material nicely. This is a wonderful addition to the Chivers Audio presentations of Block's works. The only one I liked more was Block's own reading of Eight Million Ways to Die.

This book is a great resource for the Indian textile researcher. The pictures are well-done and the analysis is very competent. Ms. Barnes is very skilled at clearly stated what can be known and what can be conjectured from an analysis of these textiles. As a budding textile researcher I found her analysis both informative, and comprehensive. It certainly isn't a light a read, but the clear explanations make it possible for even a beginner to gain knowledge from this book.

For a beginner, it's realy help to know the psychology meanings of the inner planets in Astrology. And it moves me a lot on the deeper of myself. For this reason i also order this series seimar,V1, V2,V3..on Amazon. so, order and read it right now.

Excellent description of each topic.No necessity to refer any further text books on the topic.Excellent description of procedure techniques. Good review of the indications, contraindications and complications of each procedure. Relevant X ray pictures and diagrams.

I highly recommend this book to Wardens who are involved in student/resident welfare in University Halls of Residents

For a mystery book, this novel fails at every turn. The main character, a young boy named Charlie, begins his life growing up on a farm where his father attacks him with terrible non-harmonies and atrocities music was never intended to produce. Soon, Charlie is swept up by the idea that music need not to sound pretty, and that life be filled with hesitance and incompletion. This novel falls short when it start to focus, only a few pages in, on Charlie's Second Piano Sonata. Why the auther chose this, the most unanticipated work since Garfunkel's "Songs From a Parent to a Child", on which to base a story of suspense is beyond me. The most disappointing point to all of this is that Geoffrey Block, a man with so promising a name, could fall so far from genius. Don't let his IQ fool you.

If you haven't seen this man's work, and if you like woodblock prints, you are in for a real treat. His art is beautiful. He'll be more recognized someday, but that matters little. His art will be the same, mesmerizing.

This book should be read not only by students but also by anyone who is still unsure about what they are doing and where they are going. It covers a wide range of topics and addresses serious issues that face especially the teens and young adults as they make a transition from school to society. These range from help with learning and time management to issues on sexual decisions and substance abuse. The layout and graphics make it appealing and easy to read. "Keys to Success" systematically takes student readers through their final years in schools and helps them to think seriously about their goals in school, their careers and ultimately their future lives. Coupled with questionnaires and written exercises, it really leads to greater self-awareness and confidence. I would recommend that parents of teenage children get this book for them and better still go through it with them, if their schools do not use it in their curriculum. Not only students, but anyone who still feels unsure of himself or herself could benefit from this book. We all have goals and dreams for our future. This book shows us how we can take charge and emerge winners in the game of life.

The photographs in this book captured my heart and my imagination. The pictures tell a story of a of a people and a land greatly affected by war. I look at the faces of the children and wonder what life was like for them then ... and what life is like for them now. I would never know that these photographs were taken by a young man, a novice photographer in his early 20's. My first thought was that they looked like pictures that should be featured in Life magazine. Though I've gone through the book many times, the man's face on the front keeps inviting me back to remember a time and a place that is very distant to all of us. I highly recommend this photographic journal of Korea during the war.
