Don't buy both books
Don't buy both "How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation in California, 10th edition" and "The California Nonprofit Corporation Kit, 4th ed." expecting two different books--they contain exactly the same contents, the only difference is the "Kit" comes in a three ring binder.

Nice format to get aquainted with the law.
I am using this for understanding the non-profit corporate requirements in California. I was made the secretary for our corporation for our church. This book is very clear and helpful. The CD rom is a plus with great examples and help.

It Really Works!
When I purchased this kit, I didn't know anything about the how to file for nonprofit status. This kit took me through the process step by step and I have now sucessfully received my 501 C3 status! Thanks!

How real-life doctors live
This is a fun trip on how a husband-wife team of doctors (don't they EVER get tired of each other?) cope with a busy practice, and how the tail sometimes wags the dog. Fun,light reading.

It's about the fun to help sick people
An eye surgeons story - it's serious and humorous, cute, sexy and engaging. As a commercial artist, I feel like illustrating the book.

Something for everyone to enjoy reading this book.
This was one of the most delightful books I have read. One felt they could really relate and actually know the characters in this book. It's a must read book for young and older adults.

Not quite a Dzogchen Primer
This is not so much a Dzogchen Primer as a Rangjung Yeshe Publications primer!
Rangjung Yeshe Publications is an independent publisher founded by and run by Marcia Binder Schmidt and her husband. The Dzogchen Primer is compiled and edited by Marcia Binder Schmidt and is mostly compiled from existing writings from the Rangjung Yeshe catalogue interspersed with a few (also existing) Shambhala texts. The Rangjung Yeshe catalogue is largely based around the writings and teachings of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and have a very definite style or 'feel' to them. Although these writings offer a valuable contribution, they cannot be said to represent an encapsulation of Dzogchen (the editorial review which says "Schmidt pulls together writings from historic and contemporary masters" could wrongly give the impression that these are THE definitive writings).

If you want the definitive book on the subject of Dzogchen, you won't find it!
The Three Pillars of Zen of Dzogchen has as yet not been written. Until it has, you will have to patiently plough through some often very dense writings just to get the occasional glimmer of what is at the heart of the Great Perfection. The Crystal and the Way of Light by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu, The Golden Letters by John Myrdhin Reynolds, and Rangjung Yeshe's own As it is Vol 2 by Tulkhu Urgen Rinpoche might be a better starting point than The Dzogchen Primer.

As a Rangjung Yeshe Publications Primer, five stars. As a Dzogchen Primer, three stars.

Dzogchen or Mahamudra?
The Dzogchen Primer is a nice collection of works compiled and edited by Marcia Binder Schmidt. The text compares Mahmudra, Dzogchen and Madhyamika as follows (pp. 175-176):

"According too the Mahamudra system, the means aspect is the Six Doctrines of Naropa, while the knowledge aspect is Mahamudra practice itself. These two are called the path of means and the path of liberation. By unifying means and liberation, we attain true and complete enlightenment. In the Madhyamika system, the Middle Way, the means aspect is relative truth; the knowledge aspect is ultimate truth. It is by unifying these two truths that we attain true and complete enlightenment. Finally, in the Dzogchen teachings, the means aspect is called 'spontaneously present nature,' while the knowledge aspect is called 'primordially pure essence.' By unifying primordial purity and spontaneous presence, Trekcho and Togal, we attain complete enlightenment."

This book takes the view that all three are the same in essence and nature, as do many sources. However, given the above comparison, the text is written from the Kagyu perspective with an emphasis on Mahamudra (rather than Dzogchen as one would expect from the title). In the Kagyu tradition, there is a heavy emphasis on the ngondro or preliminary practices, proceeding one step at a time. (In comparison, many Nyingma and Bon Dzogchen sources available in the West treat Dzogchen as a complete path in itself, although the preliminary practices are considered to be useful support activities.) Following the Kagyu outlook, the text begins with a few nice chapters on "the view" (basically the same in all three traditions) followed by many chapters on the preliminary practices. Authors include such noteworthy sources as Padmasambhava, Patrul Rinpoche, Shantideva, Milarepa, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, among others. It is a nice collection and shows some of the diversity of perspectives within the otherwise unified tradition.

Still, for a book entitled The Dzogchen Primer, one should note that the title is quite misleading. There is virtually no discussion of the Trekcho or Togal practices of Dzogchen. Readers expecting to find a book on Dzogchen practices are likely be disappointed. Readers interested in the preliminary practices or the Kagyu Mahamudra perspective, on the other hand, will find it a very nice addition to their collection. Had it been entitled The Mahamudra Primer, I would have given it 5 stars!

Essential Sourcebook
For anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism, especially the teachings of Dzogchen, this is THE book to read. The compiler, Marcia Schmidt, has done an incredible job in bringing together in one volume the essential teachings from both the masters of the past and those teaching today. It is also fortunate that some of the Dzogchen teachers featured in this book are currently teaching in the West -- Thrangu Rinpoche, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, and Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche -- so these teachings can also be approached in person.

This book is a great gift to everyone who wants to understand the teachings of the Great Perfection.

Try The Waterproof Coach
This book appears to be similar to the Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes published several years ago. The Waterproof Coach has more versatility because it's interior workout pages can be rearranged to create thousands of combinations of workouts.

A good tool, but with one serious flaw..
The workouts and the book overall are good, and for the self-coached athlete, much better than trying to think up a workout every day. There are two main sets for each workout, one longer than the other, but they could use more differentiation - one may be 2600 meters and the other 2300 meters. It should be more like 2600 and 1900. Or slip a third option in the middle. Of course, if you are reasonably experienced, it's not had to extrapolate whatever distance you plan to do for the day.

But....the flaw...once you get it wet, it's nearly impossible to get it dry again!

The pages are waterproof, but they stick together and even a little splash seems to get every page wet. Unless you stand it up and open as many pages as you can, rotating this every couple hours for several days, you just can't get it dry before it starts to mildew and stink. I evn tried putting it in the dryer (on that removable non-rotating shelf) but unless you get those pages open, it won't dry.

Two solutions I've found- (1) take off the spiral binding, hole punch the pages (not easy, since the pages are plastic), but it into a binder, and just take a single page for the day's workout to the pool, or (2) keep the whole thing in a big ziploc bag, turning to the page you want first, then zipping it in for the pool. This work pretty well, and keeps you from owning "Stinky Workouts in a Binder".

I can't wait to get in the pool again!
Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes is my new "Most Valuable Tool" for training this season. Bernhardt begins the book by making a concise case for sound, purposeful training. No more meaningless laps or jumping in the pool and developing "a plan" on the spot. You can use the workouts, enough to keep you interested for a long time, on their own as you wish. Alternatively, you can truly maximize this nugget by developing your own plan for the season. She provides a 12 week program, assuming 3-4 swims per week, to save you planning time and/or to give you a general structure. The plan is adaptable and flexible and I see no difficulty in adjusting it to my own training needs. In order to accomodate new and seasoned athletes, and those training for shorter courses and iron distance, each workout has two distance options. Your first workout will be a test so you have a reference tool (time) that keeps you training at your own pace instead of some speedier (or slower) swimmer a lane over. Bernhardt makes purposeful training so understandable that you'll wonder why you even bothered "just getting in for a swim" in the past. I have the Triathletes Training Bible (Friel) and Training Plans for Multisport Athletes (Bernhardt), and this book is a great addition. While the other two books have helped me understand what I want to do in order to train well, Swim Workouts in a Binder has saved me hours of time in my season planning and given me a renewed excitement for pool training.

The book is the perfect size to sit at the edge of the pool for mid-workout reference, and the sturdy spiral binding keeps your page in place. It will get absolutely soaking, and that's okay.

Anything negative? No negatives, only an understanding of what it is not meant to contain. For instance, the only drills she brings into the workouts are finger drags, one-arm swimming, and catch up. It is clear that any other drill could (and should) be added or switched in according to personal needs. For a guide to swimming technique you have to look elsewhere. Expect just what the title of the book indicates. It's perfect.

Bluebonnet at the Alamo
I really enjoyed this book and so did my three children (11, 10, 9). We read the book together because we were interested in learning more about San Antonio and the Alamo. The book gives the reader a brief tour of the river walk and the Alamo as viewed by two armadillos. The main plot revolves around Jim Bowie and his famous knife. It was a fun book for kids and had just enough suspense to even keep my 5th grader involved. This would be a good book for a Primary teacher to use with a social studies unit on Texas or the Alamo.

A good criminal law casebook
This was my casebook for 1st year Criminal Law. It is a good casebook, and does a good job of summarizing the law in addition to a decent job of editing the cases. I would strongly recommend purchasing Understanding Criminal Law by Dressler in addition to this book.

For A Class
I read parts of this book for a class I took and it taught me a lot about the way international politics, especially ethnic politics, work. Though an intellectual work, I don't think there is a great barrier of understanding to those who do not know much about the Middle East. I especially enjoyed descriptions of the Caspian Oil Game

The Legacy of John Cyclone
I really loved this children's book and so did my children. It is a tender tall tale by a talented young boy about a very large guy with a big heart who spends his time creating mountains and lakes and helping others. The illustrations are beautiful and compliment the story well. We all really loved this book and its message of kindness to others!
