Balance

I cannot vouch for the book, having just learned of it's publication, but I sat in the author's classes years ago and can say with utter sincerity that Professor Michalak is one of the finest, most erudite, original and irrerverent political scientists I have had the fortune to meet.

I knew this book during my career of medicine in León Guanajuato, México. There was an sixth edition book. I learned on this item guided by my tutor Dr. Jesús Cuéllar Zavala a therapist phiscician in Hospital Aranda de la Parra in León. I can tell it's easy to read, and the concepts that brings are quickly understood. Continue my career as general surgeon, and this book, was still my quick reference on electrolyte imballance and whenever I've had the oportunity to recomend it, I've done it.

Now, as professor, I present a lecture and a workshop about water and electrolyte imballance in surgery to medicine students of sixth semester in Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, México, and again it has been a very useful tool. I believe that every univerity in world should account with this book, and that every student may find in it, a clasical and good medical reference.

This well-crafted "fable" speaks to the role most modern day women have been raised to fulfill -- that of caregiver for everyone but oneself. The pitfall, of course, of this kind of caregiving is the sacrifice of self and the ensuing emptiness. The author gives us poignant imagery and guidance in how to care for our own "gardens" which, in turn, enables us to help others care for theirs. Though this is a familiar refrain, the author's imagery through her story provides a lingering illustration of our duty to ourselves and others -- that of loving and caring for ourselves. This story touched me deeply and I know I will use it repeatedly with my clients and friends, be they men or women, as they struggle with the balance between caring for others and caring for self.

Dickeson's book is a comprehensive manual for academic administrators at all levels who need to maximize resources because of cutbacks. Since the most likely source for needed resources is reallocation of existing resources, he suggests a means to prioritize programs so administrators can make well-informed decisions. Dickeson's ideas have a firm basis in practical applicaitons. He has served as a university president and is currently president of a consulting firm that has guided hundreds of colleges and universities through program prioritization. This book contains checklists at all stages of the planning process plus samples of actual priortizing plans and is a very useful resource not only at the institutional level but for any program undergoing review.

An excellent and exciting book that effectively gives meaning and perspective on how to balance career and life. It starts with a balanced achievement inventory of life that includes written goals, excersize, good eating, achievement factors, stress management, love, romance and failure control. Practical advice on imroving all of these in a step by step approach. In the section on the Heart of Achievement, some potentially life saving advice for better heart health is given. In the Fail or not to Fail section, the entire concept of success is discussed and again useful tests and practical advice is given. An excellent insight on how to improve anyone's career and life balance.

Gripping
This is an exciting and fast moving novel. The well developed characters are people you quickly care about. The plot twists caught me by surprise. Just when I thought I could predict what was coming, the author took off somewhere else. Editing could have been better, but I am sure future editions will be corrected. All in all a very satisfying read in the genre of urban or dark fantasy (laced liberally with romance, adventure and humour). Some graphic sex and violence advance the story and are not (in my opinion) over done.

Whether or not you are an artist or another career-woman, this book offers insight and advice and encouragement to anyone who is struggling with combining ambition and motherhood while keeping sane. I recommend this book to my women's group and any mother I meet.

This book is well written, sensible, and a great resource for educators and parents!
