Helps to calm you
This book teaches you to open and balance your chakras, not just with explanation, but step by step instruction on meditation and KY exercises, complete with drawings. Each chakra is related to an emotion, positive and negative. I find the area I'm struggling with in my life, and do the exercises for that chakra and it has helped to calm me and balance me.
Highly recommend. Only gave 4 stars vs 5 because I wish the meditations and exercises were all in one section.

Great for Kundalini teachers
As a teacher of Kundalini yoga, I consider this book to be one of the basic must have books. It not only helps with identifying and working with chakras, but is easy to explain and the asanas can easily be incorporated or organized with other kriyas, for personalization of class for a client. Thank you, Gurmukh!

THIS IS AN AWESOME YOGA BOOK!
This is a very open minded book - inclusive of all religions, with the underlying belief that Kundalini yoga and meditation can serve to deepen all spiritual practices.

In this book, Gurmukh devotes a chapter to each of the chakras and discusses the strengths and shadow sides of each energy center. Each chapter tells stories and gives examples, either from Gurmukh's life or from the lives of her students. When discussing the second chakra she gives an account of a man who felt that he was addicted to sex - and then she discusses the path he took towards healing. In the chapter which discusses the third chakra she relates a story about a woman who was consumed by anger and how focusing her healing energy on that chakra brought her to a new level of health and well-being (the woman had AIDS as well). In the chapter on the 6th chakra she tells about a woman who decided to take anti-depressants after yoga helped her realize that she was clinically depressed. Gurmukh also tells her own stories of addictions, pain and healing. Each chapter also gives examples of specific exercises to do for each chakra.

This book is a great addition to any yoga library.

Very Good Memoir of Overcoming Cancer
You've all read about that sports figure, you know the one that won the cycling championship in France this year after overcoming testicular cancer....inspirational, right? Well, Scott Burton may have a lower profile, but his story is just as inspiring. The author, a professional juggler and stand-up comic, had his own level of fame in the entertainment business, learned to confront cancer head on. This book is original and insightful for anyone surviving cancer, or those who wish to do so. Full of personal wisdom and advice, this book puts cancer into perspective, meaning it is only part of the story of living. An enjoyable read for those who want to cozy up by the fire on a cold, snowy winter day and actually learn something at the same time.

Courageous, Heartwarming & Entertaining
A truely inspirational book. Mr.Burton relates his story with warmth, courage and humor. A very talented writer and performer. It's definitely worth your time to read "A Life in the Balance" In addition, if you ever get a chance to see him perform, DO IT. His comedy/juggling act is amazing!

excellent, insightful, humorous
Mr. Burton uses his gifts of humor, kindness, and in your face truthfulness to lead you through the scariest days of his life--this book will uplift you

enlightening!!
I found this book to be full of truths, full of the basic knowledge that we all were born with, but has been erased with lifes false fears. I will recommend it to all my friends, in hopes of helping the world become more balanced.

Impressive Harmony from the School of Life
Ms. Richardson draws from personal challenges of abuse and poverty to illuminate what the ancients have always taught; a life lived in balance is indeed a gift in itself.

Helped me look at life through new eyes
This book helped me see what life is really about. So many self help books try and give you a quick fix but Eileen explains it in a way that can only come from some one that actually lives it. A must read if you are really serious about living a balanced life.

Semblance of Balance
Published in Paperback by Sterling House Pub (July, 2002)
Author: Wayne F. Nielsen
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

A fascinating viewpoint of the famous case
Wayne Nielsen really grabbed my attention with the first chapter of "Semblance of Balance." He writes from the viewpoint of Elizabeth Sattler, a Viennese nurse emigrating to the US. The descriptions of her voyage in steerage and arrival at Ellis Island are incredibly poignant; so is the description later on of her experience nursing soldiers in World War I. From then on, we follow Elizabeth as she first takes her position as a nurse to the ailing Mrs. Leopold, then stays on as a housemaid in the affluent Chicago family's mansion. Because she is literally airing the dirty underwear of family, she witnesses the crime from a unique vantage point.

This viewpoint of one of the most infamous crimes in 20th Century history is one that makes for a very enthralling book about what really lay behind Leopold and Loeb's horrific murder-for-thrills. Nielsen's descriptions of the times are apt--giving a real fly-on-the-wall feel. Author Nielsen is the grandson of one of the key witnesses, and his personal family history seems to have motivated him to provide a new and exciting look into this case.

Unfortunately, the book is sadly flawed in one respect. Nielsen lards the conversation liberally with German phrases. This does give the conversation the authentic sound of the halting English of Elizabeth and other German-speaking immigrants. However, the German is almost invariably incorrect. The errors range from simple grammatical errors to outright howlers such as "Kopfkrankenschwester" ("head nurse" literally, but horribly wrong.) While most English speakers don't know German, many of them, like myself, do have a knowledge of the language. This makes what is otherwise excellent writing look ignorant, and it could have been prevented by handing the manuscript over to someone who knows the language. A sad thing to mar an otherwise excellent book. I hope a future edition will fix these errors. If you don't know a word of German other than "ja" or "nein", however, you will be blissfully unaware of the problem and enjoy this book even more than I did. Recommended, with this reservation.

Fascinating and Compelling.....
In the fall of 1924, America was riveted by the infamous Leopold and Loeb trial, and much has been written over the years about this intriguing case...the defendants, Nathan Leopold and Dickie Loeb, their wealthy and elite upbringing and education, the crime's thrill-seeking motivation, and lawyer, Clarence Darrow's brilliant strategy and closing argument. Now, Wayne F. Nielsen brings a totally new perspective to this "crime of the century." Meet Mr Nielsen's grandmother, Elizabeth Sattler, nurse and maid in the Leopold household, who witnessed, firsthand, the events leading both up to, and then after the murder, and became one of the prosecutions star witnesses. Using his own family history coupled with exhaustive research, he has written a fascinating book that transports the reader back in time, and gives you a very personal, fly-on-the-wall view of the entire affair. This eloquently written book is tense and compelling, and filled with history, drama, insight and truth. Semblance Of Balance grabs you from page one and never lets go. For those interested in history and true crime, this is a book that should be placed right at the top of your "must read" list.

Outstanding work
This is a novel that holds one's attention right from the beginning all the way to the end. A real gripper! It was fascinating to learn that Mr. Nielsen's grandmother was actually a maid in the Leopold household. Looking at "the trial of the century", the household and all other events from the eyes of the maid was intriguing.

The Balance of Nature?: Ecological Issues in the Conservation of Species and Communities
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (December, 1991)
Author: Stuart L. Pimm
Amazon base price: $29.00
Used price: $22.95
Average review score:

An influential work
Well, at least influential for me. Stuart Pimm's "Balance of Nature" is intended for an audience of professional ecologists and (like most academic texts) demands patient, thoughtful reading, but is well worth the effort.

Why influential? Throughout my rather lengthy graduate school "career," I've been struck by the tension between simple academic ecological theory and the stunning complexity of real-world systems. Pimm tackles this condumdrum by focusing on the relationship between species richness and system stability, explaining why the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

If your ecological education has not already made you suspicious of popular (but naive) concepts of "natural" stability and balance, then this book will open your eyes. Recommended.

Excellent
This is an excellent book for ecologists in general

When most of us who were raised in the western hemisphere think about energy, it's to wish we had enough of it to stay awake in our mid-afternoon meetings without resorting to an eighth cup of coffee.

But in the ancient traditions of China, India, and Japan, energy is seen as a universal life force. In China, this life force is qi (pronounced "chee"), and travels through the body on pathways called meridians. Understanding these meridians is the key to acupuncture and acupressure. In India, energy is called prana, and its channels are called nadis. Along the main channel are seven centers of energy called chakras. Movement systems like t'ai chi and yoga are designed to balance energy in the body, rather than burn it off.

Energy Now explains these basics of Eastern medicine, philosophy, and exercise simply and intelligently. The illustrations--a combination of beautiful artwork and easy-to-follow photographic sequences of models demonstrating various movements and techniques--make the ideas discussed seem both inviting and timeless.

If you have any curiosity at all about yoga, shiatsu massage, aromatheraphy, acupuncture, reflexology, or any other therapy or system based on Eastern concepts, Energy Now is as attractive and user-friendly an introduction as you'll find. --Lou Schuler

This was a very valuable book
This is an excellent topic and a book that you should read if you are working at home and have children.

The home office solution
If you work at home it can be challenging. This book gives great advice on how to overcome many of the home office challenges.

At Last -- A book that understands!
I've been working at home for 5 years and read my share of books on how to do it efficiently and happily. This is the best book yet on explaining the emotional issues that come up and how to cope with them. It was very, very helpful to me; I've modified the way I structure my day in response to suggestions in the book and now I frequently get more done AND feel less stressed.

Life in the Balance: Emergency Medicine and the Quest to Reverse Sudden Death

Today, many people take for granted the idea that a stopped heart can be restarted, that a person who appears dead isn't really dead until all life-saving techniques have been attempted. But just a few centuries ago, dead was dead. The Amsterdam Rescue Society, formed in 1767, was the first dedicated to the idea that someone who appeared dead--drowning victims, in this case--could and should be revived. Life in the Balance looks at the colorful history of resuscitation from biblical times to the present, and shows just how recent today's life-saving techniques, and the will to save lives at all, really are.
Average review score:

An excellent history of resuscitation
This book is an excellent resource for those interested in resuscitation. It's a must-read for ACLS or BCLS practitioners. Eisenberg, himself a nationally-known expert in the field of prehospital care and layperson CPR, takes us on a tour of efforts of resusucation over history, some of them useful, some of them bizarre, but all of them by people who helped us learn what we know of the science of resuscitation today.

jousting at windmills
The case for reversing sudden death is anything but secure and proven. Recent works such as that of Stefan Timmermanns cast aspersions on CPR and ACLS on logistical and clinical grounds. The Eisenberg book is the essential first step one undergoes when entering into a very real controversy. It is a standard one uses to measure growing evidence from Delaware and Ontario not to mention rural Kansas that much of our time honored dogmas are no longer sacrosanct. The quest goes on for now, but maybe not forever.

Elegant and fascinating history
This is an extremely interesting and well-written book. I picked it up because I love medical case histories, doctor or nurse biographies, or anything of that nature. This book is a lively overview of resuscitation through the ages. Who knew that artificial respiration used to involve fireplace bellows, with the modern method not making an appearance until the 1960's? Ties together the contributions of many far-flung individuals as well as the historical contexts which shaped them. I love a great find like this!

a book you must read to be a expert
The book is not written for beginners. It offers keypoint concepts of the basic balance physiology and the vestibular funcion tests. If you are ever puzzled by the conflicts of those results in vestibular function tests and can't figure out which test or tests to relay on during your clinical evaluation, you would feel wonderful after you read it . You must read it to be a expert but it certaintely isn't your first book .

The Practical Management of the Balance Disorder Patient
As a first year graduate student in Audiology, this book, at first glance seemed like an impossible read. The writing is extremely dry and medically based. After finally getting through the first chapter, the rest seemed to be significantly easier. All in all, it has been an extremely informative book and will be an important addition to my permanant reference collection. For anyone interested in the testing and diagnosing of balance disorders, this is an essential read.

A must-have reference
An excellent resource for any medical professional involved in caring for patients with vertigo or unsteadiness. The approach is clear and concise, with many sample cases. This is the only text I've seen which provides a logical, stepwise and complete approach to the difficult task of diagnosis and treatment for this group of patients. The included normative data wil be very helpful for those just starting to build a balance assessment testing program.

I love this book!
A friend heard this author speak at a conference and said I had to get a copy of this book (she wouldn't part with hers). I love it! It's like talking with 30 business women who've been there - and hearing in their own words how they deal with work/life balance issues. It made me feel so good to know I'm not the only one struggling - and helped me develop my own checklist of things that will work in my life. I'm giving copies to two friends at work and my boss for Christmas!

Finally - The Real Truth!!
I feel validated and finally have some real suggestions that will help me achieve balance in my life! It's hard to believe that this book was pulled together in only eight days. It's personal, professional, and heartfelt. If only the women in my company would be as brave as the women in this book!

Wow! Insightful & Useful!!!
I couldn't put this book down! I've been working in large corporations for nearly 15 years and have two grade school children. I didn't think anyone understood what I was going through but now I know that I am not alone. I found many strategies in the book that will work for me - the workbook was incredible! Thank you to the executive women who put this together so that I can achieve work/life balance!!
