Sex & Celibacy: Establishing Balance in Intimate Relationships Through Temporary Sexual Abstinence

Nothing in common?.....Think again.
Well, I grabbed this book off of my shelf just before departing for the airport. Once on the plane, I began to read away. After a few pages, I thought that I would not be able to relate to this "straight" man, as I am gay. I forced through a few more pages and then it clicked, this guy was writing about my childhood and adolescent experiences. I couldnt put the book down.

Wolter traces intimacy issues back to the roots. The things he touched on were fascinating...everyone trying to recreate relationships from thier past, dating a "mom-a-like" or a "dad-a-like", making friends friends with people who remind you of your siblings, etc.

Wolter breaks us guys down to simple creatures, always in competition with each other, hiding our feelings, and trying to fulfill something missing through dysfunctional relationships and shallow casual empty sex.

Celibacy and spirituality are tied together in ways I never imagined.

I'm buying a copy for all of my ex's and all of my future partners!

Simplifying accounting language : don't lose your balance!

Simply Wonderful!
The last time I had an economics course was during the academic year 1967-68. Since then, many of my courses included major components of economic theory and readings in economics. In addition, as a director of a program, I am held responsible for the managing a budget. I've never had an accounting course. I am able to manage my budget with my computer knowledge and by directing questions to two friends who are accountants.

If you are like me, Slater's work SIMPLIFYING ACCOUNTING LANGUAGE is great! The book accomplished two critical goals. First, it breaks down accounting to its simplest components. Anyone who has completed an accounting course will find the book too elementary. Anyone who hasn't, but is forced to manage a budget will find the book to be refreshing. Second, if one has to ask dumb questions to an accountant, SIMPLIFYING ACCOUNTING LANGUAGE will provide a person with an appropriate vocabulary to sound coherent. Like all professionals, accountants have a language all of their own. One needs the proper vocabulary to speak to them.

As I write, one of the biggest news items is the Enron scandal. Apparently the Arthur Andersen accounting firm mismanaged the books. This entire fiasco has had a major effect on several sectors of the economy and has place many aging working in financial jeopardy. As I monitor the CNN web site, I must acknowledge that substantial amount of my understanding of news items comes from my reading of Slater's fine book.

Take Your Time: Finding Balance in a Hurried World
Published in Paperback by Hyperion (September, 1998)

Take Your Time--Quiet Your Mind and Enrich Your Life
Read this book and you will discover some of the best ways to experience a more spiritual and selfless life. Sri Eknath Easwaran, the late founder of the Blue Mountain Center for Meditation in northern California, has developed an "eight-point program" of living, which includes daily meditation, reciting a mantram to bring balance to the mind, slowing down, putting others first, and other ways of enriching your life and the lives of those with whom you interact.

The author makes a point of emphasizing the distinction between slowing down and being lazy. There is a difference--we can slow our mind and still move quickly and efficiently. It's often when we try to do more than one thing at once that we run into problems with focus and concentration on the job at hand.

His suggestions, lively sense of humor and anecdotal style make this a highly readable and enjoyable book. I have found his suggestions to be quite effective in providing balance in my life and think that this small volume (and his other work) will be necessary reading in this day and age of road rage, school violence and unrestrained greed.

Other titles of Easwaran's are just as relevant--favorites of mine are Meditation (guide for learning to meditate), God Makes the Rivers to Flow (anthology of inspirational passages for meditation), The Compassionate Universe (ways of guarding the Earth for our children) and Conquest of Mind (expands on the eight-point program with new ways of considering it) and find them to be excellent as well. Another related title, bestseller The New Laurel's Kitchen Cookbook, was written by students and friends of Easwaran's, and originates from the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation. (written by Laurel Robertson, Carol Flinders and Brian Ruppenthal.)

Excellent Summary of Oregon History
"That Balance So Rare" is a perfect introduction to the history of Oregon. It can be used as a good general reference for scholars who need a starting point to further their knowledge of this State and region, even though it is accessible to all, and to readers of all ages. The well-written, informative and often humorous text is accompanied by dozens of lovely photographs and illustrations which really evoke Oregon's colorful past. O'Donnell focuses on the nineteenth and early twentieth century, as he correctly sees this period as the time when the political, economic and social features of modern Oregon were essentially defined. Also commendable is his treatment of the local Native Americans, who were pushed from their "garden of Eden" by successive waves of white settlement. Recommended reading for Oregon natives and anyone interested in learning more about this beautiful Pacific Northwest state.

Toad Overload: A True Tale of Nature Knocked Off Balance in Australia

An Overabundance of Toads
Science/Social Studies picture book focusing on the balance of nature in Australia. Gives factual information about the attempts to control the beetles which were destroying sugar cane crops. Giant toads, the size of dinner plates, were imported to eat the beetles. At first the toads stayed in the fields where they belonged, but soon they strayed to the towns and caused many problems. This book shows that you never know what might happen when you interfere with Mother Nature. The illustrations are wonderful, especially the one of the toad dressed up as a baby!

Where is this country heading??
This book is a must in understanding globilization, the hoarding of the dollar abroad, the potential repercutions of a liberal trade policy and solutions for a soft-landing. Due to a lack of understanding of this subject the first chapter was laborsome, but soon I became facinated with this subject. Overall, this book significantly elevated my understanding of the subject and provides an insightful view into this transparent issue.

Understanding Reality the Inner Teachings of Taoism the Book of Balance and Harmony Practical Taoism (The Taoist Classics: The Collected Translations of Thomas Cleary, Vol. 2)

Sensitive, contemporary feel
Many translations of the Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tzu are merely stylized evocations of religious philosophy. However, Cleary's profound understanding of the texts and his translatory genius in itself is an affirmation of the Taoist doctrine: strive for simplicity and you shall reach profundity. This is a translation which can be applied to everyday situations and yet does not shirk from metaphysics.
