Indeed A Path to God's Superabundant Blessings
This book focuses on the importance of knowing the wonderful plan that God our Father has in store for us. This book has been an eye-opener to me to see the bounty of God's superabundant blessings which we receive through Christ. If you want to see God's blessings flowing tremendously in our lives,if you want to know the conditions on how to receive them, if you want to know God's wonderful plan and will for our lives, whether in the areas of health, finances, job, marriage and family --- this book will surely uplift your spiritual sails! Benny Hinn outlines some biblical principles about God's plan for us on how to claim His blessings on our lives. I have been touched on one of those principles and that is on the subject of tithing. I started to act out in faith, started to give back to God what is rightfully His, claiming His Word and trusting by faith, the Lord indeed is faithful to His promises! Not only did His spiritual blessings poured out over my life, but He lifted me out of financial debt! CAUTION: This is NOT a how-to book on wealth and prosperity, this about the God's generosity and faithfulness to His children, stretching forth His hand to save us and help us in our needs which He supplies in Christ. Those who want to boldly walk and claim God's blessings on their lives, this book is for you!

An excellent resource for this Jewish Holiday
As far as I know, this is the first major anthology on Tu B'Shevat, which is the "Birthday of the Trees" on the Jewish calendar. The book begins with an excellent essay called "The Living Tree: A Festival's Growth through History" by Arthur Waskow. His essay traces the development of Tu B'Shevat from an agricultural tax-date associated with tithing in biblical times, to a mystical meal to renew the Tree of Life in the Middle Ages, to it's current focus on ecology and global survival.

Waskow's essay becomes the framework for arranging the rest of the book like a growing tree. After all, the Torah is called a "Tree of Life"! The "roots" of Tu B'Shevat are found in biblical Judaism, the strong "trunk" was formed in rabbinical Judaism, and the "branches" are various post-Talmudic movements such as Kabbalah and Hasidism, Zionism and the Land of Israel, modern Eco-Judaism, etc. Finally, there is a section on the Festival itself, which includes a variety of essays, songs, and other resources for celebrating the holiday.

Parts of this book are heavy on the "Jewish Renewal" POV, which is not surprising, since the "eco-kosher" movement began in that circle. Some of the material, such as the "Olamama" love song to Mother Earth by Hannah Tiferet, is a bit too neo-pagan for my Orthodox tastes. And while "The Bear in Me" is a nice idea for a song about nature waking up in the spring, the words "There's a bear hibernating in the crook of a tree" are not true to life -- unless the tree is meant to be a metaphor for Tu B'Shevat. Real bears do not hibernate in trees!

On the other hand, there's quite a bit of traditional material, too -- some of it never before published in English. Of special interest to me are a translation of the Ari's 16th-century kabbalistic version of the Tu B'Shevat seder, and a translation of a "lost" medieval poem called "Shemona Esrei of the Trees." The latter was unknown in modern times until it was re-discovered among the manuscripts that Solomon Schechter brought back from the Cairo genizah in 1896. It continued to languish in the obscurity of academe until Joyce Galaski fell in love with it and did this translation. The poem, which is believed to date to around the 10th or 11th century, is the oldest known liturgical piece based on this festival. Not only that, it's beautiful! (The Hebrew text of the poem is also included.)

The rabbinical "trunk" section has two excellent pieces on the halachic principle of "bal taschit" ("you shall not destroy") and how it was expanded from a biblical prohibition against cutting down fruit trees in times of war (Deut. 20:19-20) into a general prohibition against vandalism, wastefulness, conspicuous consumption, and any unnecessary destruction of resources.

These examples are only a tiny nibble of the many gourmet tastes of Torah to be sampled in "Trees, Earth, and Torah." Like all such anthologies, it's definitely a mixed bowl of fruit, some sweeter than others. Taken as a whole, however, the book is a wonderful feast! It should be in every Jewish library.

Excellent anthology
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since Tu B'Shvat is arguably the most vegetarian of Jewish holidays because of its many connections to vegetarian themes and concepts, vegetarians should joyfully welcome the publication of this anthology with its abundance of material that should contribute to the increasing popularity of this mid-winter holiday. All who are looking for ways to apply new, creative approaches to ancient festivals should also be pleased.

Among the following valuable and interesting features the book contains are:
1) An introductory essay by Arthur Waskow that traces Tu B'Shvat's growth throughout history from its original status as a day that separated trees in terms of when tithings were due, through the establishment of the Tu B'Shvat seder by the kabbalists of Sefat in the sixteenth century, through the associations with tree-planting of nineteenth century Zionists, to recent adaptations by modern environmentalists;
2) Quotations related to trees and other Tu B'Shvat-related concepts from the Torah and other Jewish sources;
3) Material related to rabbinic dicussions related to Tu B'Shvat, including a recently discovered medieval prayer, "Shmoneh Esrei for the New Year for Trees," and insightful essays on bal tashchit, the mandate to not waste or unnecessarily destroy anything of value, based on a Torah verse not to destroy fruit-bearing trees in wartime, by Rabbi Norman Lamm, President of Yeshiva University, and by Eilon Schwartz, Director of the Heschel Center for Environmental Learning and Leadership in Israel.
4) Seven items relating kabbalah and hasidism to Tu B'Shvat, including a translation of "Peri Eitz Hadar," a kabbalistic Tu B'Shvat seder.
5) Five items relating Tu B'Shvat to Zionism and the land of Israel, including an extensive analysis of how the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet le-Yisrael) used tree plantings on Tu B'Shvat to educate young Israelis on love of the land of Israel and nature.
6) Thirteen wide-ranging items on connections between Tu B'Shvat themes and "eco-Judaism' and current environmental problems, including essays relating the holiday to recent efforts to save the Redwood forests and an analysis of current environmental threats by Ismar Schorsch, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological seminaryt.
7) Much wonderful material to help celebrate Tu B'Shvat today, including blessings for the seder, suggestions for cooking up a Tu B'Shvat seder, suggestions to involve children in the Tu B'Shvat seder and other holiday-related activities, suggestions about planting and taking care of trees, suggestions about new Tu B'Shvat traditions, recipes, and songs.
8) An article co-authored by Jonathan Wolf and this author on "Judaism, Vegetarianism, and Tu B'Shvat," which discusses aspects of "the most vegetarian holiday".
9) Sources for Learning and Doing ("Seeds"), including a listing of "Environmental Organizations, Publications, and Videos," a discussion of several Tu B'Shvat seder Haggadot, and sources for information about tree planting.
This brief summary can only give a taste of the many "fruity" delights in this book, and I regret having to leave out mention of many significant themes and distinguished authors. Because of its many environmental and vegetarian connections, I hope that this wonderful anthology will be widely read and discussed so that it will meet its potential to play a major role in the expansion and enhancement of an increasingly popular Tu B'Shva

Delicious and varied as Tu B'Shvat fruit!
The quality and variety of the selections are amazing: poetry by Marge Piercy & Marcia Falk, songs by Shefa Gold & Hanna Tiferet Siegel, scholarly articles by Miles Krassen & Howard Eilberg-Schwartz, the original Kabbalistic Seder from Safed & Ellen Bernstein's seder for today, meditations on trees by Ismar Schorsch and Zalman Schachter, wonderful papercuts and a cartoon comix by Joel Lurie Grishaver, fruit-dish recipes from Iran and India, essays on tree-planting in Israel -- totally delicious, not only for preparing Tu B'Shvat celebrations but also browsing anytime of year.

Excellent history of science
Don't let the title fool you. This is not just about China, this is about the human condition. Someone with an imagination should have worked on the title and given it a bit more excitement. I almost skipped reading the book because the title seemed so dry.

I read this book twice and will probably read it, again. The author's presentation is simply masterful. Step by step, he recreates the setting and background for the book's creation and utilization. In fact, he walks the reader through about 2000 years of 'uses' that people found for the book. According to Cullen, this classic was probably a gift to a Chinese emperor and then dumped in a back room for 200 years. It was only when political circumstances changed and an 'old' book might be valuable that it was 'rediscovered' and rendered useful.

For anyone interested in the practice of ancient astronomy, Cullen goes into great detail on the tools and practice of Chinese astronomers from about 3000 BC to the arrival of Jesuits in 1600. For anyone interested in Chinese political history, Cullen explores imperial Chinese history in a way that simply makes one want to read much, much more. For anyone interested in ancient Chinese record keeping, Cullen offers practical advice on what to make of the 'documents' we moderns discover.

I hope they make this a paperback so that it can get wider circulation. What is commonly called 'the history of math' is often embarrassingly western (ethno-centric). This book offers a means of correcting that unfortunate state of affairs.

Sweeps away all New Age psychobabble
An eminently readable, entertaining, and fascinating look at a premier text of ancient Chinese science. Cullen provides an excellent analysis of this important document, including its history, authorship, and meaning. The diagrams are clear and crisp, the writing cogent and witty. You can't go wrong with this one.

By the Grace of God
My lover/partner/friend/conspirator gave me this book last night. As he walked away, I clutched it to my chest and began to cry.... I have not finished reading it, but have only put it down long enough to sleep a few hours(at my lover/partner/friend/conspirator's insistance), eat and now write. I have not been so overwhelmed with a feeling of coming home since reading Bi Any Other Name ten years ago. This is, literally, the answer to my prayers! As a bisexual Catholic I have struggled many years with my spiritual and sexual identities with little guidance from others who could not understand and therefore could not speak. At last I have found others who share my struggle! Thanks to all who helped make this book possible! I hope you are as richly blessed as this book has so richly blessed me.

Comments from a contributor
First, a conflict of interest disclosure: I am one of the contributors to this anthology. And I must insist that you buy this book anyway. It is one of the best anthologies on the bisexual experience I've encountered, and believe me I've read them all. Deb Kolodny has a good ear and a deft editing hand, and she compiled a superb collection of insightful, well-written pieces. The anthology reflects the glorious diversity of the bi movement, and the unique contributions of bisexuals to their spiritual communities.

Stunning and inspiring.
This remarkable album of sheer beauty graces both my coffee table at home and that of my grandmother. It is replete with many, many photographs of the Rebbe officiating at weddings from the 1940's to 1963. There are also rare photographs of the Rebbe together with other gedolei-Yisroel at these weddings. For example, on page 11 is a picture of R'Moshe Feinstein zt"l and the Rebbe. Elsewhere in the book are pictures of the Rebbe with R'Yosef Kahaneman zt"l (the Ponovicher Rav), R'Shlomo Carlebach zt"l, and various Chassidic Rebbes. We are even treated to a lovely picture of Rebbetzin Chana, the Rebbe's mother, sitting together with her daughter-in-law, the Rebbe's wife, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka. A beautiful volume that would serve as a most cherished wedding gift, or for that matter, a gift for any occasion!

The most powerful gift for a wedding day
This Album is the first of its kind an album which includes hundreds of pictures and sermons deliverd by the late Rabbi Menahcem Mendel Schneersohn at the weddings he attented in his early years of leadership. For a bride and groom on their wedding day, this book will not only lead them into living a life based on morals and srirituality, but let them bring up a family who will cherish their heritage and be proud for whom they are. Again, I would like to commened the compiler on his great effort and toil he has put in to this album.

The Blue Cliff Record is a collection of Chinese koan, cryptic Zen stories that point the way to enlightenment. Monks would (and still do) spend days, months, even years on a single koan, ruminating over it, plumbing its depths--not trying to figure it out, but letting it open a door inside of them. Over the centuries, masters have attempted to help the process along by adding their own remarks. Translator Thomas Cleary tells us that two of the most important commentators on the Blue Cliff Record have been the Japanese Hakuin Ekaku of the Rinzai lineage and Tenkei Denson of the Soto. In Secrets of the Blue Cliff Record, Cleary includes the core elements of the original Blue Cliff Record and selections from the extensive work of these two commentators. The result is not exactly a CliffsNotes, as the reading is still arduous. Even the comments can be cryptic and in need of comment. But the more fingers pointing at the moon, the easier it is to find. --Brian Bruya

Diamond cutting sword!!!
Once again Thomas Cleary has delivered a masterpiece!! Hakuin and Tenkei comment on THE Zen text of the ages. What a refreshing break from so much drivel by most of our contemporary (though voluminous) pseudo Zen masters.
Please, Dr.Cleary, more, more...

A welcome translation
Thomas Cleary translated The Blue Cliff Record many years ago.In this new book Secrets of the Blue Cliff Record he makes available commentaries by Rizai master Hakuin and Soto master Tenkei. This book will be welcomed by those who have read,re-read and studied The Blue Cliff Record in detail. I recommend this books to students of The Blue Cliff Record everywhere!

The Siddur is also a great reference book which also provides the necessary blessing and prayers for the life cycle events.

Very easy to use and follow

The Bi-Personal Field: Experiences in Child Analysis (New Library of Psychoanalysis, 36)

Analyst and child as a narrative duo
"The Bi-personal Field" is the first book of Antonino Ferro available to the English-speaking psychoanalytic community. He is nevertheless already well known not only to the Italian public of psychoanalysts, but also to the international one thanks to his articles published in various years on the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. Formally, this book appears as a handbook on the technique of child psychoanalysis. In fact what makes it a particularly valuable text is rather that it soon becomes a book on how the mind of the analyst operates at work. Ferro's theory is located at a very interesting and original crossroad between the ideas of Bion and those of Willy and Madeleine Baranger. He holds the concept of bi-personal field - that is to say the clinical situation in the here and now of the session as it gets shaped by both participants to it, patient and psychoanalyst - as central for his theory. Ferro tends to move his interest away from external reality or considerations solely related to inner relations of the patient. This in order to follow the "fil rouge" of understanding what is going on in the bi-personal field. The development of the patient's tale is regarded as continuosly depicting the state of the art of the relationship between himself and his analyst. As Ferro puts it the characters of the tales become in this way an expression of the "quality which comes alive in the consulting room, probably generated by the patient and myself and which is my job to transform". A series of consequences derives: Ferro dislikes saturated interpretations, explicative, revealing or decoding ones, particularly those which emphasize the cleverness of the analyst and imply a blame on the patient. On the contrary -interestingly enough- he seems to prefer a style where discoveries are written together, in a duet. Ferro provides abundant clinical material which proves very useful to show his way of working. I find this richness of material is rather unusual in many contemporary psychoanalytic texts. Not only. Ferro - in addition to his theoretical positions - shows an amazing ability to creatively deal with his patients' material. His fresh clinical imagination conveys new thoughts to both the patient and to himself. And to the reader of his book as well.
