The Right to Be Human: A Biography of Abraham Maslow

Excellent Biography
Why have almost all of today's most celebrated marketing wizards made it their business to know about this man and examine his ideas? Why does virtually every serious management book recognize, document, and praise his insights? How do his life and his legacy continue to inspire and inform the visions of today's most alert and innovative entrepreneurs? Why is global interest now mounting in his multifaceted work?

Fascinating and visionary, Abraham Harold Maslow (1908-1970) pioneered revolutionary ideas that helped form modern psychology and laid the foundation of the human side of management and marketing. His lifetime of discoveries in motivation and personality transcended academic psychology, and extended into the major business fields of management and marketing. Maslow also loved to explore nascent, barely perceptible social trends and speculate boldly about their long-term consequences. He was the originator of such important concepts as the hierarchy of human needs, self-actualization, higher motivation, team decision-making and business synergy.

All business students-not just of management development and organizational behaviour-should read this seminal biography. Critically acclaimed in its first edition and now revised and updated for this paperback edition, The Right to Be Human is a fascinating portrait of one of the seminal thinkers of the twentieth century-at once a vivid biography of a truly original personality and an intellectual journey to the very source of how we think about and manage our businesses today.

Edward Hoffman, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in New York with degrees from Cornell University and the University of Michigan. He has authored several books including Future Visions: The Unpublished Papers of Abraham Maslow, The Drive for Self: Alfred Adler and the Founding of Individual Psychology and The Book of Fathers' Wisdom.

Easily the greatest biography written this century!
One of the greatest biographies written this century!! While Freud and his followers convinced the world that we all repressed our inherent wickedness and immorality, Maslow sought out the good in people--"the best of humanity". Dr. Hoffman has written one of the most accessible and fascinating biographies of the century. Shown here with warts and all, Hoffman delivers a full and rich account of one of Psychology's greatest thinkers. As brilliant as he was compassionate, Maslow radically changed both psychology and the corporate world. However, Kudos need to go to Hoffman, who skillfully and eloquently brought Maslow to the masses. Anyone interested in psychology, business, or simply the trials and triumphs of a fellow human being will take away more from this book than any other text available. Highly Recomended!!

Safety Can Be Fun
This is a great book that teaches even the smallest child about using safety in different situations. It is hilarious yet helpful in teaching safety. Don't leave toys on the steps or you'll be a nit wit. Many other valuable lessons to learn!

Entertaining and very informative...
I read this book as a kid and it was probably the funniest book in the library. This book is basically a catalog of different kids who do unsafe things. Each one has a picture and a silly "NIT-WIT" name, like the Dare Dumb Nit-Wit who is about to jump off the top of the stairs. Munro Leaf does a great job of explaining why you don't want to do the things these kids do, so the book has lessons to learn while still being entertaining. The drawings (stick figures) are very simple, but are pretty funny for children to see. Years later, I still remember the drawings of the kids who got into the shower without checking how hot it was, pet a strange dog and got his arm stuck in the dog's mouth, who ran and fell with a lollipop in his mouth... the stick figures are not gory or violent, just kind of silly.

Laugh Until Your Faces Hurts
Sandra Shamas is a rare, one-of-a-kind talent who can capture everyday life experiences with hilarity, high-fun and humility. I can't believe she isn't a COLOSSAL, HUGE, HUGE hit in the U.S. yet (though I understand it's of her own choosing). Her book will brighten your day or make a dark, dreary night seem like a trip to the circus, but if you get a chance to see her show live, YOU MUST GO! I guarantee you will laugh until food comes out of your nose (Yuk!), and you will reminisce about her shows for years to come. Take a good friend with you -- you'll have the time of your life!

I LOVED IT!
Years ago a friend and I went to see Sandra Shamas perform 'My Boyfriend's Back and There's Gonna Be Laundry'. We still talk about it to this day. It was one of those rare evenings in which the two of us sat staring up at Sandra, hanging on her every word, tears of laughter streaming down our faces which were permanently contorted into a big open mouthed laugh - we're talking sore face and belly muscles at the end of it all kind of laughter. Since then we've been desperate to see more of Sandra's work but were never able to - Until now! Thank you for writing it all down Sandra. This book is a real gift. Read it and weep!

Practical Ways to Become Acquainted with Single Women
I usually do not review books to help young men meet young women, having been out of the dating game for a very long time. Two aspects of this book appealed to me, though. First, the author interviewed ten women to get their perspectives on what they like about meeting men. Second, the author is Australian. Having visited that fine country, I was impressed while there by how well young men and women seem to get along.

This subject of men meeting young women had come up in another context recently, and one of my sons (who is happily married) commented that most guys tend to drool while eyeing new women who appeal to them. I can see how that might be a turnoff to women. He also recommended taking evening classes in subjects where lots of women attend (such as for yoga and art appreciation).

Armed with that perspective, I had no idea what She Can Be Yours! would suggest.

Mr. Michael's work was a pleasant surprise. The things that worked when I was young still apparently do. Before arriving, be sure you are neat, clean and exude a pleasant odor. Once in sight of someone you want to meet, go up, say "hello" and pay a sincere, understated compliment while smiling pleasantly. From there, get acquainted in the way you would with anyone else. Ask questions and pay attention to the answers. Be yourself. If you find the young woman to be responsive and interesting, ask her out for a simple "get acquainted" activity.

Sounds pretty simple. But what if you are tongue-tied and awkward? The book is fine for you . . . because it is filled with lots of encouragement. From Lisa (a 21 year-old blonde with blue eyes), "Guys shouldn't be so scared to pick me up. I really enjoy meeting and talking to men." Women also aren't as much focused on physical appearance in selecting men to date, as men are in selecting women. From Ruby, "I like a man who is warm, sincere and will treat me with respect." If you make progress, there's a chapter that points out that women like sex, too. From 26 year-old Sandra, "Men probably don't realise that most girls are looking for a good sexual relationship and if a man is decent and sincere and shows an obvious interest in me, well if I feel like having sex with him, then I will."

I only found one area where the advice seemed totally wrong. The author suggests that women primarily dress to impress men. I've seen a lot of research that suggests just the opposite. Most dress and primp to look good in the mirror, as a way to feel more positive about themselves.

The book emphasizes employing humor. In my experience, most men aren't very good at selecting humor that appeals to women. Unless women are always laughing at what you have to say, I'd skip that advice.

In terms of getting acquainted, I thought that the book would have benefited from some advice from neuro-linguistic programming studies. I'm sure that matching body language and breathing would help in getting acquainted.

My main disappointment with the book was that it did not deal very much with how to deepen the relationship to make it a committed and permanent one. If you are interested in that subject, you might want to look at Relationship Rescue. Although that book is intended for people who are in bad relationships, it deals with misunderstandings and miscommunications that should be cleared up during dating. You can use the advice to avoid having problems later.

Good luck with meeting someone who will enjoy you as much as you do her!

Be sure to follow this book's advice frequently if you would like to make the acquaintance of more women.

She Can Be Yours
She Can Be Yours is a great book packed with loads of useful tips and advice on meeting women and winning them over. I like the fact that several women were interviewed in this book and their surprising quotes/answers have been included to reinforce the author's views. The book is written in a light, humorous, entertaining manner while providing a great deal of very useful information. It covers a wide range of topics from overcoming rejection to establishing a relationship with the girl of your dreams. Some particular topics in the book which I really enjoyed were: Girls Enjoy Sex Too, It's In Your Kiss, Body Language, Let's Talk About Sex. Overall, I really enjoyed reading the book and found it to be very informative and useful-highly recommended!

Most Informative Book of its Kind
Dr. Misri does an amazing job of hilighting the different aspects of PMDD and post-partem depression. I especially loved the section on Garlok. This book is a must read for any person who wishes to be more informed on an important issue in our society today.

A must for any woman, spouse, family or friend suffering.
Dr. Misri does a great job of explaining depression as it relates to pregnancy and the postpatum period. She includes stories of women that she has counseled over the years. These stories help the reader to better understand the various forms that depression can take. I highly recommend this book to anyone who thinks they or someone they know may be suffering from depression related to a pregnancy, including miscarriages and still births.

Concise and convincing - an important book
Janet Gallant's Simple Courtesies delivers a significant message in a very effective way - every aspect of our lives and all areas of public life can be improved by acting as we would like others to act. This book proves its point with a wealth of timely examples and demonstrates the constant, definitive relevance of the golden rule to daily existence. This is a book to buy for the people you love, as well as for the people you wish you could love more.

This is an important book everyone should read.
Janet Gallant has put together a whole book on the theme of the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Her short chapters deal with practical applications of the Golden Rule in situations at work, at home, at school, and in our daily lives. The lessons apply to young people, old people and those in between.

"Treat your siblings as you would like them to treat you," is one example from the section of family life. Another: "Treat your parents as you hope your children will one day treat you."

At work, "Be the kind of supervisor you want to have," she suggests. And, "Work as you would like others to."

Other examples include:

"Be the kind of customer you would like to deal with....Drive the way you want others to drive...Be the good sport you would like your opponents to be...Be the kind of host you would like to visit....Treat people in mourning the way you want to be treated."!

Each principle is followed by a page of practical suggestions for how to put it into action.

Some version of what we know as the Golden Rule exists in most religions. It is as good a rule for human behavior as anyone has ever come up with, and the world would be a much better place if each of us could learn to put it into practice in all that we do.

"We have committed the Gold Rule to memory," said Edwin Markham. "Let us now commit it to life."

Jane Gallant's excellent, approachable book shows how we can do just that. It would be an appropriate gift to anyone, but especially to young people.

My Favorite Teen Romance!
About 20 years ago when this book was first issued it became one of my favorites! I just got swept up in the romance of Jenny & Keith..I lent it to a friend and never got it back so I searched & got an original..the cover & all! Sixteen Can Be Sweet is a bittersweet "teen" Summer romance and one that I'll not soon forget. I'd recommend it to any young girl going through the angst of "young love"...however dated the storyline & situations might be! An A++ in my book!

EXTREMELY SWEET
Once I started to read this book I couldn't put it down. A touch of excitement, a pint of tragedy, a sprinkle of hope and 158 pages of love was what the book was comprised of. When sixteen year old Jenny's mother dies in a car accident and her father gets wounded again in a car accident. They leave Cincinatti to regain peace and tranquil. Her affectionate stepmother Kay- for the first time- yells at her. Ted, her father, blames himself for both of the incidents and forces himself to stay locked in the pits of his brain. He barely talks. Kay and Jenny are devastated and this is the reason they are suggested to leave Cincinatti. Jenny doesn't appreciate the fact that they need to leave Cincinatti, for she had gotten a perfect summer job. A life-guarding job around the pool where she can meet handsome boys and new, cool friends. She detests every second until... She meets Keith in the isolated beach in Pamlico Sound... I'm not going to spoil anything, yet you should know that after this it gets exciting; really exciting and it's a can't- put - down book. A few events seem to be climax points and for a ligth, calm and REALLY SWEET book. I recommend this book about how helping others can make you feel much better than being insatiable and helping only oneself!
