How to Be a Hermit or a Bachelor Keeps House
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (July, 1987)

Collectible price: $24.95

A Classic of humor and wisdom
Here again we have Will Cuppy at his best. From his discovery of Jones Island to his discourses on spinach and hermitage he always makes us laugh. His humor is gentle and very funny and can be read by any age.

An early work of an unacknowledged master of humor
Will Cuppy always managed to say something funny, no matter what the subject. His humor often was very dry and subtle, and at its best can have you chuckling over some comment for days. This is an early work of his, and his style does not seem fully developed. Nonetheless, you will find many of the unique observations and ways of describing the world (and its inhabitants) that make his later books true masterpieces.

This book has a remarkably "modern" feel to it, and will be a revelation to anybody who thinks that books must be topical to pack a punch. This volume, written over 65 years ago, still is remarkably incisive and witty today. Indeed, reviewers of Cuppy's time fell all over themselves trying to find somebody with whom they could compare him. The best most of them could do was cite Mark Twain, but in the final analysis Cuppy has the distinct advantage over him in writing short humorous essays.

How to Be a Hero to Your Kids

Filled to the last page with loving advice!
Truly the best (and most relevant) book I have ever read on Christian Parenting. The book is filled to the brim with PRACTICAL, RELEVANT advice on how to be a successful parent, and, yes, a Hero to your kids.

Basing their thesis on five main Parenting concepts, and amply supported with Scriptural references and real-life experiences, the authors present a clear, workable strategy to really improve your parenting, in such a way that you can teach your children the lessons of life, whilst still retaining their respect and absolute love for you.

A must read for anyone who would like to gain new insights in Christian Parenting.

AWESOME book, One everyone should read
This book should be required reading for all those in counseling. Everything we are stems from our parents. Even those of us who have very little contact with our parents can learn a great deal, even if we don't have children.

This book teaches why we are the way we are and how we can overcome the wrongs that have been done us by just understanding where our feelings are coming from. As a grown adult raising children I have learned more about myself in the span of reading this one book, then I have in my whole lifetime.

I feel this book will help anyone with their walk with Christ.

How to Be an Indie Kid: A Memoir of a Boy Lost in Society
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (February, 2004)
Author: George Ha
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

Stunning good
It¡¯s hard to believe it¡¯s written by someone still in his teens, due to the depth of the plot and thoughts. For parents who have problem in commuting with their teens or try to shorten the distance with their teens MUST read it; not only who has gone/is going through the same phase... READ IT.

Outstanding book... aspiring writer.
What is most notable about this awe inspiring, heartfelt first novel from George Ha is how well he creates his own teenage character, struggling to fit in his modern day high school world. He is a loner, he is a geek, call him what you want, but he is definitely an inspiration to those of us who really struggled through high school, or are currently struggling. His well thought out emotional entries comfort us, knowing that in this crazy world, we aren't alone.

I recommend this book to those of you who enjoyed Perks of Being a Wallflower or Catcher in the Rye. His Holden/Charlie-esque way of looking at things may just bring a smile to your face or a tear to your eye. He has an entry for just about everything.

VERY awesome book. Great things to come from this young gifted author.

Learning how to cherish is healing.
If you saw an attitude of cherishing between a couple, even if you didn't recognize it as such, probably you would yearn to be treated like that. Chances are not good that you can "find" such a relationship, but the exciting news from these authors is that you can create it. "You are more powerful than you think," the authors say. Let me give you one of their secrets: how you treat your partner is what will bring about cherishing, and the authors give very specific things to do and not to do. Another attitude that isn't mentioned much, but it's there in the book, is the importance of maintaining a sense of mutual respect. Betrayal, mean-mouthing, and neglect will surely kill a cherishing relationship. The best part is that the process is harmonious, freeing, and can release stress. The authors admit that there are relationships in which cherishing can't happen, but most often it can. Very healing in our sad world.

Knowing what pitfalls to avoid, and more
The third volume in a planned twelve titles series from Life Works Books, and accessibly co-written for the non-specialist general reader by professional psychotherapist Marilyn Graman and workshop developer Maureen Walsh, How To Be Cherished: A Guide To Having The Love You Desire is an effective, "do-it-yourself" guide to keeping relationships nurtured, including maintaining that special feeling characteristic of the early days with a beloved friend, spouse, or life partner. How To Be Cherished is an invigorating guide to revitalizing mutual happiness based on opening one's heart, seeing through the man's eyes, knowing what pitfalls to avoid, and more.

How to Be Funny: An Extra-Silly Guidebook
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (April, 1991)
Authors: Jovial Bob Stine, Carol Nicklaus, and Bob Stine
Amazon base price: $2.50
Used price: $0.69
Collectible price: $7.00
Average review score:

This book offers useful advice for all comedians.
Have you ever found yourself with only a pair of ping-pong balls wondering, "Is there a laugh here?" Jovial Bob Stine would affirm that there are two or three good laughs available from such time-tested comic materials. Whether you are trying to make the most of your "awkward stage," or hoping to hone your skills for the broadcast media, this enjoyable volume holds a wealth of inspiring gags and tips. You'll find hilarious walks guaranteed to earn you acclaim as you use them to enter classrooms, cafeteria, or costume parties. The author--a consummate comic himself--provides useful illustrations and charts of funny (as well as unfunny) situations. The referencing is superb; this guide could conceivably be taken to prospective funny spots on the sly and referred to as needed. Armed with this slender tome, the comedian-to-be will gain the edge offered only through proper preparation, confidence, and inspiration.

All you need to know to be funny, and get in trouble!
A very silly book, which requires you to have some normal, household items:

A blue ferret, two bald chickens, wax lips, a rubber chicken, a squirrel mask, and other everyday items!

How to Be Happy

Wise and practical
For nearly twenty years I have owned a discarded library copy of this book and it survived many "weedings" of my personal collection. Somehow I did not actuallly get around to reading it until recently. It proved to be a milestone experience and I regretted not reading it much earlier...perhaps I was not ready before? It is drastically changing my attitude to "life, the universe and everything"! Everyone should have the benefit of this supremely wise yet totally practical and down-to-earth philosophy. Whoever this John Pepper is (or perhaps was)he is a true sage with genuine insight in how we can live successfully in this "vale of tears"!

IT SOOTHES MY DISTURBING SPIRIT
Everyone should read this book. I have read it for at least three times. The book advises on how we should look at suffering in this world with a more liberating perspective.

If you are not happy wherever you are, whatever you are doing, read this book. It will help much, I promise.

How to Be Invisible, Revised Edition : The Essential Guide to Protecting Your Personal Privacy, Your Assets, and Your Life

Thorough, simple, legal
After reading the first edition, I was eager to read the revised addition. I was not disappointed by the many updates that have been included.

First, as before, I was pleased by the simplicity of what is taught. None of the "off shore" schemes promoted by others, and most important for me was the avoidance of anything illegal.

Mr. Luna provides readers not only with methods of keeping one's personal life private, but encourages readers to learn from those methods and develop their own methods that work best for them. But he doesn't stop with the book. Readers of the book are granted access to a portion of his web site that the author has REGULARLY updated for years. This area of his web site provides readers with updates-- very important considering how the world changes so quickly. He also responds personally to readers questions, and posts the responses online so we can all learn together.

It becomes very clear early on that the author has employed these techniques himself, so he knows what works and what doesn't.

He also provides resources-- actual names of people who the author trusts to help protect your privacy.

When one combines the information in the book, the resources, and the web site, one gets a complete privacy package.

I strongly recommend you get this book now-- even if you can't immediately forsee a need for privacy. The steps you need to take can't wait until after someone on the highway feels you cut them off and calls his friend of a friend at the DMV to learn where you live-- it's too late then!

The answer to your post September 11th Concerns:
I own both of J.J. Luna's "How to be Invisible" books, the original and the newly revised edition for 2004. J.J. Luna is an excellent privacy consultant and he keeps up on his trade providing you with correct and current information on protecting your personal privacy.

More info is available @ www.pcpitbull.com with feedback and advice. I have personally written Mr. Luna and one of his accomplices, "Senorita" with questions and suggestions and they have always responded in a quick and courteous manner. I believe this illustrates Mr. Luna's commitment to his readers; something most privacy advocates avoid so that no one can call their bluff.

In "How to be Invisible" the 2004 revision, Mr. Luna does more than just fill the gaps of his old book. He makes it a point to provide the reader with an overall sense of comfort in following his practices, holding your hand through the hard parts and sending you in the right direction to continue on living a private life.

In the beginning of the new book J.J. admits that the events of September 11th 2001 and the subsequent security measures enforced, changed or eradicated a large portion of the first rendition. The changes themselves though, were not very substantial. The theme is the same, the details are a little more detailed and overall I found this new revision to be more informative and helpful than the first. Mr. Luna filled the needed gaps and provided the missing links that every revision attempts to do, and he succeeded. The end result is an easy to follow, informative and moving guide to living a more private life.

Protecting your privacy is not something you should be ashamed of, it does not make you a zealot, it gives you the personal protection that you deserve in today's society. Mr. Luna's book gives you all the information you need to start sewing your modern security blanket. If you value your life and the life of your family, you owe it to yourself and to them to become informed. Start here!
