A great help.
Managing a kitchen as a batchelor and staying healthy is difficult. Janet Chiavetta makes the task easy, and has improved the fruits of my labors.

Outstanding healthy eating cookbook. Best one out there!
This book has an excellent collection of low-fat, low-cholesterol recipies. Also, it contains about 200 pages of user friendly text on how to follow a healthy diet. It has extremely useful information on how to lose weight and keep it off and the importance of diet in preventing illness. This is certainly the most useful book I have in my kitchen and I have given it to numerous friends as gifts. They have all raved about it!

Embracing Persephone: How to Be the Mother You Want for the Daughter You Cherish

Embracing Persephone
In a time long ago and far away, the god of the Underworld, Hades, abducted Persephone, daughter of the goddess Demeter. Demeter grieved so deeply that the lush vegetation of Earth died. Hades eventually returned Persephone for six months of every year. During this time, Demeter's joy allows the plants to again grow. Traditionally, this has been the story of why we have winter and summer seasons.

Virginia Beane Rutter has another interpretation of the ancient story. She says "this myth directly invokes your relationship with your adolescent daughter as you brave her exciting but terribly risky passage to becoming a woman." Rutter is psychotherapist and Jungian analyst, with two children of her own. Embracing Persephone is her third book.

In it, she provides a wealth of advice, strategies, and wisdom for coping with the critical adolescent years. Rutter emphasizes throughout that mothers must grow along with their daughters. Mothers dealing with their daughters' issues often find themselves dealing with their own issues as well. She offers lots of encouragement, saying that "being aware of yourself and your daughter does not mean that you will handle every situation perfectly." Her focus is on establishing and keeping an ongoing relationship with daughters.

She says that "to have any influence over your daughter, you must value your relationship more than your need to control her." This can sometimes mean permitting her to do things you'd prefer she'd not do. The key is teaching daughters to accept responsibility for their choices.

Rutter discusses issues such connecting, even when conflicts seem unresolvable, body image, sexual exploration, and drugs and alcohol. Each section includes examples from real teenage girls and their mothers of how they handled some of their expectations and conflicts.

Adolescent girls face monumental challenges. Because of the way in which the world has changed, many of these challenges are different than those experienced by their parents. Embracing Persephone "will help you identify the issues that trigger conflict with your daughter [and] provide you with strategies for keeping your relationship open." It's a book that belongs in every household with a teenage girl.

A Beautiful book
I am a psychologist working with adolescent girls. I also have a 12 year old daughter, and I have been in the field of adolescent psychology for the past 20 years. This is one of the best books writen for mothers and daughters. This book breaks the false belief that mothers and daughters must have conflict. Embracing Persephone illustrates the depth and spirituality of the mother daughter relationship while interweaving sound psychological advice through many vibrant examples. Rutter is a very possitive author with hope and faith in the mother duaghter relationship. This book also reveals the strength in girls. One of the most satisfying books to read about possitive deep relationships between mothers and daughters. I have recommended it to many friends and clients.

Excellent book for children
My granddaughter took this book in to her kindergarten class, and the teachers used it in all the kindergarten classes for their discussion about being friends.

Excellent book to help kids deal with bullies!
This colorful picture book teaches children to deal with anger in a positive way. When the two main characters meet a bully, they use coping skills to vent their anger, then they confront the bully and try to make friends with him. The book also addresses what to do if a bully just won't change, and someone is going to get hurt. Ultimately, the book stresses that it is more fun to get along and share than it is to fight - a concept many adults never fully comprehend!

The Failures of American Medicine: Why Americans Have Become Chronically Ill, and What Can Be Done About It

Practical information and help for the chronically ill
This book would appear to be required reading for anyone who has a chronic medical condition (including psychiatric conditions), who is unsatisfied with how that condition is being managed, and who is willing to make the effort to self-educate and take control of his or her own health again (with continued appropriate medical consultation).

Jensen provides compelling evidence to support his suggestions that (to name a few): American medicine is the best in the world for emergencies (like a heart attack), but it falls short for chronic conditions (including psychiatric conditions) that affect the majority of patients. Funding for research is skewed toward investigating proprietary drugs that will make a profit, but not toward investigating the often powerful effects of vitamins or other substances that cannot provide high profits. Physicians are too conservative with respect to new treatments, and often more oriented by business considerations than scientific ones. At the same time there are a number of standard treatments that have great potential for harm. Pharmaceutical drugs can be very helpful, but should not be taken lightly, because they are the leading cause of drug-related deaths!

His book is filled with useful lists about medications and vitamins (e.g., potential problems from high intake of vitamins, potentially lethal or merely annoying side effects of prescription and over-the-counter drugs). He provides an introduction, three chapters on medications, natural drugs and vitamins, three chapters on chronic physical illness, and five chapters on chronic psychiatric problems.

Jensen leaves little doubt about what he thinks about key issues of American healthcare. Although not everyone will agree with some of the wide-ranging solutions he proposes (e.g., on pages 17-18 he suggests significant changes in the educational system), he provides clear rationales throughout his book. He cites the scientific evidence at length, and is well prepared to summarize that evidence, given his advanced degree in molecular biology.

Everything they didn't teach M.D.'s in medical school
This book is packed with hard-nosed scientific information that is a must-read for all doctors, both conventional and naturopathic. The benefits and drawbacks of both pharmaceutical and "natural" drug therapies are discussed in detail. The main topics include: chronic diet-related diseases, cancer, allergies/asthma, and anxiety/depression. With 540 references from reputable scientific journals, Jensen has blazed a trail into uncharted territory when it comes to pointing out the myriad of weaknesses in American medicine. Perhaps even more importantly, he goes into detail as to why or why not certain drugs should be taken, which can greatly help the average American patient choose between therapies. This book may be hard to read if the reader does not have a degree in science, but his common-sense approach helps a lot.

A MOST EXCELLENT STORY!
A most excellent story -- Don't pass this up --------Hunter McLean as the brooding widower with a small son really tugs at the heartstrings.
Celia Campbell has such a sunny [partly put on] but a shaky outlook on life that you just have to be on her side.
She is one great heroine that proves that persistance has hopes of winning the day and her loving attitude toward little J.J. definitely puts cracks in the ice around Hunter's heart.
Don't forget to look for the surprising twist concerning Celia's father.
And you need to read "Warrior's Woman", the story of Jackson McLean to understand Hunter's attitude about Celia's baby.
Definitely highly recommended.

A story you want to go back to again!
This is absolutely one of my all time favorite books. Celia had always loved Hunter McLean. She wathched him marry the love of his life, April, and watched him grieve for her. She desperately wanted a child and decided it was time on her 30th birthday. She meets up with a very intoxicated Hunter at a New Years Eve Party, offers a ride home, and ends up concieving the baby she wants with the man of her dreams. Her intentions are not to trap Hunter, however when he finds out she is pregnant, even though he doesn't believe the child is his, (he doesn't remember new years eve) He demands marriage. Celia reluctantly agrees to marry the grouchy rancher who claims he will never love anyone but his beloved April. Celia is a loveable character who you can't help but root for. She knows she is not beautiful like April, but she has a heart of gold. She dives into her knew life as Hunter's wife and ends up performing miracles with Hunter's autistic child. Gradually, the ice around Hunter's heart begins to melt, leaving the reader ready to melt with him.

ps. Hunter was previously introduced in "Warrior's Woman", which tells the story of Hunter's Half-brother, Jackson, and April's sister, Dawn. Another great read! Well done Laurie Paige!

Excellent guide to implement precepts into daily life
Thich Nhat Hanh has updated the traditional Buddhist precepts in this book. His version goes beyond "do not kill," for example, to be mindful of that we might be killing inadvertently. He makes us aware of the broadness of the precepts and thus encourages us to be more mindful. If we are not mindful, we break the precepts. Therefore, he calls them Mindfulness Trainings. Thay's approach frames the precepts in a way that is helpful in our daily life. He makes them relevant.

Time Out of Mindfulness
In a world of deceit, excess, killing, lying and stealing, the present moment works with faith FOR A FUTURE TO BE POSSIBLE by enlightenment from the Buddha, the practice of love and understanding, and ever bigger and greater numbers of communities seeking wisdom, harmony and awareness. Art and meditation send energy into cell nutrition and nervous system health. Mindfulness teaches respect for all life, generosity, responsibility, careful speech and healthy diet for concentration and insight. Nobel Prize winner Thich Nhat Hanh's book is a beautifully reader-friendly steppingstone to THE GOOD HEART by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART by Lama Surya Das, and LOVINGKINDNESS by Sharon Salzberg.

The Forbidden Bride to Be heated up the chilly PA autumn!
Kathryn Taylor again shows her ability to weave love and desire into a story that will not disappoint. Sophie is a free spirit, a gypsy by birth and nature. Alex is a man who needs to be in control. Their relationship doesn't appear to stand a chance - but could love be in the cards? This is my second book by Kathryn Taylor, but it won't be my last. Her stories are full of heat and passion - and most importantly characters you can fall in love with.

A sensual read with engaging characters.
Kathryn Taylor provides yet another sensual read in a tale of forbidden love, hidden desire and secrets between two lovers. A sexy hero to warm any reader's heart.

Fox Rocks!
Fox introduces small children to the delightful world of humor and irony in books. What a welcome relief from the drills on simple words that characterize so many early readers. With the simplest of words, Marshall conveys sibling rivalry, naughtiness, and even phobias with a sweet chuckle understandable to early readers. Fox was a constant favorite with both my girls and I only wish more children could go along on his misadventures.

Fox's Mom gave Fox one of those Looks...
That basically sums up all these books. They are absolute classics! I love everything about every single one of these books- I read them growing up and nearly cried as a teenager when they removed them from my local library. No matter what age you are you can enjoy these fantastic books. James Marshall has turned out nothing but classic, wonderful and fun books. If you've never read them, you're missing out on your childhood, and that goes for his George and Martha books too! Get one TODAY!

Garbo: I Wanted to Be Alone

Excellent Biography
Paris has done a great job in shedding light on the reclusive Garbo. It probes into her life, but is not needlessly intrusive. Endlessly fascinating.

Truly extraordinary biography.
Barry Paris' life of Greta Garbo is an extraordinary biography in many ways. First, it tells the story of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic and legendary icons without resorting to hyperbole or the sort of highblown psychobabble so many other, lesser writers would have stooped to. Second, it is meticulously researched and tells Garbo's story honestly, responsibly and thoroughly, including her mysterious days as New York's Most Famous Recluse. Finally, it delves deep into the heart of what made, and continues to make, Garbo one of the enduring figures in 20th century popular culture. Paris reveals the woman behind the dark sunglasses--and she turns out to be much more interesting than one might think. Garbo, it seems, was a woman of vast contradictions, who ultimately became the victim of both her own compulsive need for privacy and her vast emotional ambivalence. This is the biographical art at its finest, and highly recommended.
