Wartime Courage at it's finest
I just finish Richard Papes' novel about his exploits as a POW in Europe during WWII. He has a great ability to tell not only his story of survival and wartime intrigue but those of the Poles and other eastern Ethics group. If you ever needed a pick me in today's fast pace world this book is it.

World War II escape and underground intrigue
True story first person page turner about a British RAF pilot shot down during WWII and his accounts of being captured, escaped, captured again and escaped for a third time. Brillantly written, taking you on an across occupied Europe underground suspence story of bravery and heroism

Thomas definitely comes to breakfast!!!
I like this book because it is funny. Thomas the Tank-Engine stars in this book. But there's also his friend Percy in this book. I have read this story on the Salty's Secret DVD at the Read-Along storybook at the Fun & Games Shed. I really suggest that you get this book and read it to your children. Thanks! I am Mike Nicholson, Thomas' fan. And out! Goodbye!!

Breakfast-Time for Thomas
Both my sons (ages 1 & 3) love this book - it's their favorite bed-time story, with it's colorful illustration and fun/humorous storyline. They even pretend to read the story themselves, as they point to the egg on Thomas' nose & giggle. It's a delightful storybook for little ones.

Teens will love this book!
I am a Sunday School teacher for High School aged kids. I bought this book hoping to use it at the beginning of my classes as a 5 minute devotion. Right away it turned into the entire lesson each week. The devotions are wonderful, and really sparked some great conversations from the youth. I highly recommend this book!

Out of the Mouths of Teenagers
This book contains 60 devotions written by teenagers. I have two teenagers, and we read them as family devotions around the dinner table. The devotions are short (but not too short), cover contemporary issues of interest to teenagers, and are written in language that teenagers can understand. The book is aimed at high school students and is equally good for both sexes. The book is published by the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, but the devotions cover issues of Christian living rather than doctrine and are good for all denominations. (I am a Presbyterian minister's daughter who attended a Reformed Church college and married into the Lutheran Church, so I can say that with confidence.)

This book is great!
One thing that hit me is that you have to submit and have purity of motives, not be concerned with how well you're going to do in music (or anything else) but to have a focus on serving God.

If you can, try to catch Janny in concert!

Get serious about worship!
This book is short, yet so thorough and so inspired, and so right on that it is REQUIRED reading for the Worship Team and Choir at my church. We read it together, a chapter at a time, and talk about it. Grein reminds us that though praising and worshipping the Lord is beautiful, inspiring, and fun, if it isn't done from the heart, then it doesn't touch God. She talks about how important it is that musicians be more than talented...they must also be deeply grounded in the Word. Worship is serious business

Chief Performance Officer : Measuring What Matters, Managing What Can Be Measured

A Pragmatic real life guide to Information management
I found this book to the point, insightful and most of all practical. I highly recommend it to technology professionals in the field of Information management.

Concise and Insightful. A must read for any manager.
This book is the one place to get all the information you needed for Performance Management. The author outlines how combining the traditional role of CFO and CIO, into the Chief Performance Officer can increase business value.
If you try to get this information from other books or industry analysts (ie. Gartner, Meta, Giga) there is no clear methodology on how to implement a program like this. This book offered the one-stop shopping for perormance management.
I like the short case studies in each chapter, since they drive home how people are really doing this.
It is a detailed enough book to get the right information, but overburdened with academic theories which can never be applied in business.
I would love to see a follow-on book for more case studies and the CPO in action.

A Child's Portrait of Shakespeare by Lois Burdett
I purchased this book because I was attracted to it and I intended to put it away until I could pull together an interesting unit study on Shakespeare. However, my two boys (7 and 9) could not stand to go to bed without me reading it to them first!! They were instantly attracted to artworks and writing done by kids their age and wouldn't let me pass a single page without reading everything! They enjoyed finding the spelling errors and I was certainly surprised at how many they caught, as I am sure they would've made many of the same ones. My boys asked, after reading the book, if we could study Shakespeare for school THIS week! Yikes, I have got some quick planning to do. This is a wonderfully inspiring leaping off point for a trip into the world of Shakespeare. At the end of the book, one of my sons said it well, "Hey mom, he wrote drama and he lived drama, too!" I think they got it.

Outstanding way To Learn About Shakespeare's Life
How many people really know the details of Shakespeare's life! Find out in this well-done, rhyming text filled with kids illustrations and "letters" and "documents". For example: one child crafts Shakespeare's will...very interesting! Lois Burdett is a genius! Perfect for teaching about Shakespeare - for kids and adults! Buy It!

Is Everything Under Control?
Chetanananda who is carrying on the teaching for Rudi, brings his own style to the wisdom of the east stripped of all of it's cultural baggage, extracting a potent concentrated clarity. This is an intellectual poetic book that is double edged in that; the insight it brings clarifies and inspires and reveals the gunk and horror of what habitually falls out of our awareness. His metaphor of the pendulum and acting from a place prior to our projection of good/bad, positive/negative jarred me awake from a place of deep slumber. This book is beautiful.

amazingly on target for me
Just the chapter on inner vision was worth the book by itself

The A to Z of Communicaton Skills
From Assertive communication to Zestful living, all pulled together in one powerful book. As an international trainer and speaker, I have used Bill Swetmon's book, "Communication Skills for the 21st Century" as a source of vital, easy to use information. Bill writes this book for us to use as a full circle guide for building better relationships with others and with ourselves. As a personal friend of Bill Swetmon, I know he walks the talk of the techniques that he teaches; therefore, adding credibility to his book. It is a MUST for every professional and personal learning library.

Review for Communication Skills
This is one of those "little gems" that I enjoy sharing with my friends and co-workers. That's because it's written in bite-sized "chunks" that I can read easily-- chapter by chapter. But what I really like is that I can get my hands on a wide variety of "do's and don'ts" without spending a whole lot of time looking for them in other places. For example, a friend and I recently disagreed about where to place the wine glass during dinner. I knew I could find the answer in "Communication Skills for the 21st Century." An easy read, chock-full of helpful tips and strategies for handling myself in any situation.

Bob Bly is a blessing!
I just finished "Count Your Blessings" and truly enjoyed it. It's a wonderful mix of wisdom, humor, useful/useless information, inspiration, poignance and self-exposure. We all know now that Bob, who has been a friend and mentor for almost 15 years, is every bit as human, not to mention neurotic, as rest of us.

A couple of stray comments:

1) During the summers when I was in college, I managed an amusement park on the old Steeplechase site in Coney Island. During those two months each year I ate Nathan's hot dogs (with mustard) for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While it's now years between opportunities to eat one, I'm hard pressed to come up with anything I'd rather have than a Nathan's hot dog at Coney Island. (The ones at the franchise Nathan's are horrible.) The lack of availability is a good thing, however, since my digestive system can only handle them once or twice a decade these days.

2) I've got the answer for nose hair! You know that MicroTouch trimmer that's always advertised on TV for $14.99? The one that looks like a fountain pen and is touted as the way to keep your hair (head and body) trimmed? Well, I bought one and it works amazingly well (and painlessly) in cutting nose hair, as well as trimming eyebrows using the attachment included. I suspect it would also be effective in trimming ear hair, though that's the one affliction that hasn't hit me yet.

3) With hot dogs and seltzer listed as blessings, what happened to "knishes"?

Make that 64 Blessings: Add this Book to the List!
I read about 1/2 of "Count Your Blessings" last night and I like it!
I like how the tone is always intimate and honest, but sometimes serious and other times lighthearted. I also like how you sneak in facts to back up your statements.
Here are my favorites so far: the essay about your stroke, and the essay about freedom and the fish bowl. I especially like the structure of the fishbowl one since you directly deliver the "punchline" at the end AFTER you already made the point indirectly clear in the fish's description. (That device is also one of my favorite short story tricks.)
Thanks for the book, Bob!

Moving, inspiring, funny and wise
I have had many mentors over the last few decades.
One has helped me more than others. He is one of the most
successful freelance writers alive. He has helped me, and
numerous others, without ever expecting any return. I just
learned that this same man went through a stroke, at the
age of 44. Fortunately, he's recovered, and he's written a
wonderful book about gratitude. I'm talking about Bob Bly.
His new book inspired and delighted me while making
me feel glad for the little things in my life. Please read it.
Share it with others. Give it as gifts to strangers on the street. This is a rare, wonderful, uplifting book. -- Joe Vitale, author "Spiritual Marketing"

Hang on and get ready to be challenged.
When I was given this book, I was told to "hang-on" when I read it. They were right -- WOW! Talk about cutting to the chase and laying things on the table -- it was terrific. When I try to explain to friends my love for my home church, White's Ferry Road, one of the things I tell them is that our leaders/instructors/ministers really do a fabulous job of bringing the scriptures to life. The stories, explanations, and references that they use are so timely, so understandable, so applicable to everyday life -- that I find myself wanting more. That's how this book was for me -- Mike Nappa did an outstanding job of "talking" to me in the book -- not preaching at me -- but holding a genuine conversation with a heartfelt concern for my spiritual well-being. I was so impressed...This is one that you'll want to talk about with your spouse, your friends, etc. and ultimately bless someone else's life by sharing it with them.

Moving and Funny
A wonderfully moving book with illustrations to make the points come alive! Nappa moves the reader to take some chances in their spiritual journey even if it means failure, because being a Christian means being courageous. Nappa uses personal stories and typical preacher stories to bring the message home. You will not want to put the book down.
