A well-balanced overview of a complex political situation
The author gives a brief but well-balanced account of the rise of the Alawites in Syrian politics. It focuses on the continuous discussion of sectarian interests this involves both in their own ranks and among their opponents. I understood many aspects of recent Middle-East history much better than after reading only such general overviews as Mansfield's.

The style of the book does not contribute to the pleasure of reading it. There are many small signs of it being translated from Dutch. To my taste, the text is somewhat overloaded with names, which might appeal more to specialists than to general readers.

rich kid smart kid
I really enjoyed "Rich Kid Smart Kid", it changed my whole views on my financial outlooks on life. Before reading this book I wanted to save all my money but now all I want to do is invest. Kiyosaki gives his reader simple yet effective ways for teaching your children to save money. When I have childre, I will definately read rhis book again and use it as a guide line to ensure my childs financial future!

Simple Common Sense, Nicely Presented
Rich Dad's Rich Kid, Smart Kid: Giving Your Children a Financial Headstart is one of those books which present information that you should know, that you "do" know, but somehow do not always follow.

There are simple yet effective strategies for teaching your children about money, long before they fall into the common financial traps in the world. The book is nicely organized, easy to read, yet provides a good amount of information and material that is comprehensible to all readers.

The book is worth the time to read and to have your children read it.

Book Summary
Our current education system fails to adequately teach our children the financial skills necessary to survive later on in life. Robert Kiyosaki wrote Rich Kid, Smart Kid to fill those gaps. The fundamental premise of the book is that all children are born smart and rich. The goal of education is to bring out that natural genius within our children. Awakening this genius inside of us is a sure way to become happy. Therefore, being happy through realizing our innate potential is more fulfilling than being rich and unhappy. Rich Dad said, "If you are not happy while getting rich, chances are you will not be happy when you get rich. So whether you are rich or poor, make sure you are happy" (14).

The root of the current problem lies in America's transitioning from an Industrial society into an Information society. Kiyosaki explains the need for transitioning our thought, "In the Information Age, what you know becomes obsolete very quickly. What you learned is important, but not as important as how fast you can learn, change, and adapt to new information" (xi). These structural changes tangibly affect us regardless of whether or not we acknowledge them. Some of the problems facing tomorrow's youth include social security, healthcare, increased risk of obsolesce through increased specialization, and the need for lifelong education. Education must adjust with the times.

Currently, our education system teaches scholastic and professional skills. Scholastic education focuses on the ability to read, write, and do arithmetic. Professional education trains students for high-level careers later on in life. However, this Western brand of education fails our children in some crucial ways. Rich Dad said, "The child learns by doing, making mistakes, and then learning" (238). It's failure lies in its unconscious suppression of the innate genius within all of us, and by dismissing the role mistakes play in the learning process. This happens when our education system forces us to conform to what is only a partial definition of what intelligence is.

Financial education should be taught as soon as the child demonstrates some interest. While this may happen as early as five years old, more commonly a child's perceptions and self-identity is formulated between the ages of nine and fifteen. It is crucial to form the child's perception concerning money in a positive light during these ages. Encouraged by a famous Chicago-based study on learning, Kiyosaki believes, "...a parent's most important job is to monitor, guide, and protect a child's self-perception" (109). As a parent, the process begins by devising a "winning formula" for your children.

The formula Kiyosaki recommends should be tailored to each child based on their interests and which of the several types of genius they possess. Success requires having at least a winning formula for learning, for being a professional, and for financial success. We must be flexible enough to adjust our winning formulas when conditions render them losing formulas. The next step involves homework. Rich Dad said, "the primary difference between the rich, the poor, and the middle class is what they do in their spare time" (50). Kiyosaki recommends teaching financial literacy during your spare time.

To better serve the greater majority of students who fall through the cracks schools must adopt new teaching methods that engage students not just mentally, but also physically, emotionally, and spiritually . One way to achieve this in the classroom is by playing games. Games engage all our senses and reinforce learning. At home this entails teaching your children through pictures, games, and real life examples. Kiyosaki encourages parents to set-up three piggy banks for their children for tithing, saving, and investing. Parents should also expand their child's financial vocabulary. Appendix A and B offer many practical lessons that parents can immediately use with their children.

The larger goal to be achieved is to reorientate the way we view business and wealth. Kiyosaki says, "...if you want your children to be rich, teaching them to serve as many people as possible is a priceless lesson for them to learn" (197). Echoing the message of management guru, Peter Drucker, the primary purpose of business is to create a customer first, then to make a profit. This new perspective teaches our children and us that commitment to the public good is not incompatible with making a profit. In fact, it may be the best way to achieve social harmony. Everyone wins when we seek to develop our own unique genius and parlay our ability toward serving others while simultaneously enriching ourselves both personally and financially.

As Far As It Goes
As another reviewer mentioned, the first half of the book is an excellent account of the Ba-Benjelle Pygmies and their music. If you have been entranced by the music of Central Africa as the author and many people around the world have, this part of the book will feed your hunger for more information.

However, not only is the second half tediously devoted to a delusional one-way "love affair," but the author also reveals himself, unintentionally, to be the worst kind of corrupting influence. By buying the Pygmies cigarettes, English machetes, western clothing, coffee, radios, and liquor, he actively promotes the very destruction of their culture that he elsewhere decries. Only late in the book does he reveal that his integration into the Pygmy society is not so total as he would have you believe earlier on -- reserving mosquito nets and hot cocoa for himself, relying on the Pygmies to wait on him like royalty, bring him meals and built huts for him while he lays around contemplating the thatched roof. He seems to revel in the role of the "rich white patron" who can command the Pygmies to dance for him at will, but then is genuinely puzzled when his intended bride rebuffs his demeaning Western imperialism.

What's not said in the book is often more interesting that what was -- only after you finish it do you begin to see the true story behind the story.

Great music, dreadful love affair
Begins with a passionate, well-written story about Sarno's move to Africa. Incredible descriptions of Pygmy music. To capture/convey the sound of that music is an achievment. But all the fine qualities of this book become irrelevant about a 1/4 of the way into Song From the Forest when Sarno is smitten by a Pygmy woman. The main focus of the next 3/4 of the book is ridiculous high-school boy-in-love nonsense and drivel: she smiled at me, she didn't smile at me, I think she cares, I don't think she cares. Who cares? Can't believe Houghton Mifflin published this crap.

Ethno-musicology, sociology, vision quest, love story.
To round out the experience of this auto biographical story, please buy some of the music from the forest recorded by Louis Sarno. You won't regret it.

Nice Cover- too bad the rest of the book is irrevelent
I was very excited to learn about this book. I hoped it provide valuable insight into attending an accelerated medical program (AMP)that I am aplying to. Instead, This book has no relevent information. To be fair this book has a list of schools that offer accelerated programs (however, I also found on about half a dozen websites). The book is gimmicky and badly written. There is a fifty page long vocab list for the lame reason that "having a good vocabulary will make you more attractive to a college." The descriptions of the collges mention absolutely nothing about their accelerated medical programs. Instead it includes unimpressive irrelevent information about the campuses (greek life, tuition cost, intramural sports, transportation ect.) These things are nice to know but it is not why I bought this book. Another four chapters of this book contain information about SAT test taking skills, writing good college admission essays, teacher recomendations, and a chapter called "The future of medicine." Why does this book seem to discuss everything about college except AMP's. I have a theory that the fact was the authors did not do enough research so insteaded just added a lot of information as filler. None of the authors have any experience in education or education study. For Gods sake one of them is a personal trainer! This is a crummy college information book that just so happens to have a title that alludes to a subject that has nothing to do with what the main topic of the book is really about. I felt cheated buying this book.

waste of money
Information given in the books are conflicting. Does not have enough information and you will still end up buying more books to have complete information.

Outstanding Book
I've been looking for a book specifically on accelerated medical programs forever. I thank the authors so much for writing a book that is so comprehensive. I finally have the ability to know all of the different programs throughout the United States as well what separates each of them from each other.
I am a high school sophomore in California. I bought the book a few months ago. I already have so many ideas for the upcoming summer thanks to the book. It outlines a timetable that high school students should follow. The book also provieds sample vignettes of students who were successful and students who might not be successful. It opened my eyes and made me realize that there were so many activities that I could still do to boost my resume.
I have been studying for my SATs as well. The book provides a huge list of highly used vocabulary words which I have already started to learn. The greatest part of the book are the program profiles. The authors did a great job with them. They are cool because they were written so frankly and practically. The profiles talk about social life, academic life, quotes from students...the authors even rate all of them according to a 5 star rating criteria. I was very impressed!!!

I highly recommend this book!!!!

Raven
I have to admit I read the excerpts from this book with growing horror. I stumbled upon the book by accident, the name caught my eye having the misfortune of once being married to Mr. Knox. I can see he is still the same sick, delusional person I was lucky enough to escape from. I would only hope that caring parents and loving spouses would see thru the deliberate cloud of so called smoke that is demonstrated here and see these ravings for what they truly are, the rantings of a severely disturbed person.

the truth about this book
I am Dr. Jerry G Knox BA, DC, the author of this book. I am a licensed chiropractic physician with more than 24 years of clinical practice, most of this time offering colonic irrigation, barium enemas and other colon work. This book and all the other free offerings I have put up on line are based on these 24 years of practice and 11 years of fully accredited college and university education in the sciences. This book is a book intended to help others understand their feelings, and know that they are worthwhile people. It was not written for profit. it was written to help others!

If you have any questions about the book, you have two chapters from it as well as articles on health issues such as candida, irritable bowel sydrome, constipation, cancer, child birth and colds and flu that can improve peoples lives but are not based on making money for doctors or pill pushing companies. All this is on the web at http://www.lifeknox.com I know I am constantly attacked by those that hide behind false names, and lie about my credentientals and work to help humanity. The difference here is that almost all my work is online and published for you to see without any charge. Please judge for yourself as to the worth of it.

One of those detractors claims that my work is even blasphemous! There is nothing in any writing I have ever done on line, in books or articles or anywhere else that teaches any concept other than that of God is Love! and that God loves and cares for all of humanity. I have deliberately reviewed every word in the book to be sure that it is acceptable to all the major religious faiths, and just to those that care for others as fundamental belief system. If that is blasphemous, then what does that person think of the love of Christ, and his teachings of love? My work is based on experience and science, not advocating any church, mosque or synagogue, but seeks to support people in what ever faith they espouse.

thank you

Dr Jerry G. Knox BA, DC

An A -Z Reference Book On All Aspects of Enema & Colonic Use
Dr. Knox is a more recent day writer on the subjects of enema and professional colonic irrigation therapies. I believe in good care of my body via good nutrition, excercise, living a reasonable lifestyle, plus good alternative and self care to complement todays traditional medicine. This includes good bowel care with the aid of periodic enema/colonic use. Knox joins a long list of notable medical and non-medical authors that have written about some or all of these subjects of interest to me (Such as: Robert Gray, nurtrition counselor, Dr. Bernard Jensen, Dr. Norman Walker, Sandra Duggan, R.N., and Herbert Shelton, ND who writes on the Naturapathic teachings of Doctors Jennings, Graham, Trall, and Tilden.). In addition to discussing enema/colonic therapies from A to Z, Knox covers some aspects that I have never seen discussed in any detail prior to "Love Thine Enemas And Heal Thyself." These are the emotional and pleasurable aspects that some find go along with the use of properly given enemas. He explains why some people find enemas pleasurable as a side benefit, something that sometimes confuses the person who takes enemas for general health and illness purposes, or even on a religious basis based upon the ancient Essene Gospel of Peace, Book I. I know I experienced a period of confusion. After reading his book, I realized that I was not alone in that aspect of my enema use, and realized that a properly given enema should feel good during and after. He teaches, in effect, that the pleasurable aspect experienced by some need not be disassociated with health! His book helped me not only to accept what I think is healthy for me with judicial and appropriate use for my specific body, but to accept the pleasure and healthy feelings that result. I would guess that enemas and colonics are not for everyone, with some even contraindicated, but for those like me, "Love Thine Enemas and Heal Thyself" is a treasured addition to my knowledge on the subjects, for which I thank Dr. Knox. Although the enema and colonic therapies are not as fashionable as they were fifty years ago (although appears to be on the comeback), everyone that believes in them, or interested in investigating the aspects of such use, will find the book among those to be referred to for full understanding, in addition to counsel from a trusted health care professional.

A Great book for the Open Mind
This book is one of Kiyosaki's best. "Rich Dad Poor Dad" opens your mind to something never discussed before but seems so obvious. "Cashflow Quadrant" helps explain the way that Kiyosaki views the world; but "Retire Young Retire Rich" is the best book yet. All the poor reviews I've read so far have either attacked his writing as a person or have attacked the lack of concrete evidence of numbers. In every book so far he has said that he will not give the concrete numbers but will show you how to open your mind. So many people believe that they have an open mind but it's merely vacant. He doesn't offer a plan to get rich but the way he was thinking in order to become fabulously wealthy. In the beginning it talks about expanding your context so that it can except more content. Saying I can't do that or it can't be done is having a fools context. I'm only 21 and have invested in stocks, and I am about to close on my first real estate investment as a college student. The younger minds are much more free to the beauty of such thinking. If you're looking for other books to read Kiyosaki does offer many books besides his own at the end of "Cashflow Quadrant" If you'll notice throughout "Retire Young Retire Rich" he mentions his plan of buying two homes every year for the next ten years. That planning in my personal belief came from a prior book written in the early 80's called "Creating Wealth" by Robert G Allen. He also mentions "How to Make Money in Stocks" by William J Oneil. These are all fabulous books to read. So to all the bad reviewers who found no value to this book, your context is too small to except the content that this book is giving you. The wealth of information is immeasureable. I also own Cashflow 101 the game and have played with numerous other people and have seen the difference in the way people trully think. The five Rich Dad series books are wonderful and provide insight to the next. The game is expensive but I have found the true fountain of youth in my mind. Thank You Robert.

Nationally recognized CPA endorses it as a MUST buy!
If you are on a quest for financial literacy, this is a must buy foundation book for your treasure chest. This is Robert Kiyosaki at his finest. Skip the drivel from the ignorant naysayers who carp about the author's writing skills. They are right, it's not scholarly. Thank goodness! I'm a member of MENSA but personally, I prefer it like it is - readable.

In Retire Young, Retire Rich, Kiyosaki is hitting his stride. This book is smoother and more advanced than his past books. So much so, that I strongly recommend that you read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Cashflow Quadrant first. I found it so thought provoking that it was hard to read more than a few pages at a time without going "Ah-Ha!" and mentally zooming off to ideas on how I could apply it, right now, today.

In 1980, I graduated at the top of my class and I've spent over twenty years developing my financial knowledge base. But I can tell you, I've learned more from Kiyosaki about the fundamentals of financial literacy than from any other single influence. I heartily recommend that you read this book.

A Great Book to Read If You Want to Retire Rich and Young!
I was so excited when I first read this book and I am still excited after reading it two years later. It is great to have a book that goes through a personal story and then tells you how you can apply the ideas in your life in many different ways. Robert and Sharon did well with this one. If you want to build a future for yourself outside of the rat race, this book is a must read.

Britain in Decline by A Gamble
The main subject of this book is that Britain has been in decline for over one hundred years and that decline was inevitable. The book suggests that until the government of Margaret Thatcher there was no sign of the decline being solved, as although the political elite of the last hundred years were aware of the decline the policies they implemented seemed to have no effect in stopping it.Another point the book debates is what the Thatcher era really was.Was it the response which brought decline to an end or was it just the last chapter in the episode of the hundred years decline? The book was written to underline how and why Britain declined,to show how decline had been defined and explained, and to examine the various political strategies used to tackle the decline.

Prepare to be depressed
I went back and forth as I read this book. Brodhead obviously need to write this to gain some closure on what was obviously a painful experience. But I don't doubt his sincerity when it comes to reflecting on the good ole boy network that he was at war with for almost all of his tenure as the AD at LSU. And his documentation and research is superb. One thing is for sure-the man loved his job and he loved LSU. It's a shame he couldn't have followed through on his plans.
