Amazing collection of iconographic imagesThis book is truly an amazing collection of both icons of Tibetan Buddhist deity-types, and information about the same.
While this book is undeniably expensive, if you're really interested in Tibetan Buddhist art and/or iconography, you'll be happy to have this book in your library.
Well, someone had to write the first review and give this book a 5-star rating!

Jeffrey Hopkins is still unmatched in Ge-lug-ba scholarshipThis critical analysis and translation of the Cittamatra portion of Dzong-ka-ba's Essence of Elloquence is an astonishing work both for its depth and the skill with which Professor Hopkins negotiates this extremely difficult material. The material, while difficult, repays the effort of engagement richly. The root text is reknown in the Ge-lug school of Tibetan Buddhism as the most important text for understanding the key doctrine of emptiness as well as being crucial to understanding the interpretation of sutra and Ge-lug presentations of tenets. Yet few can master it for its cryptic brevity and the multitude of interpretive dilemas it poses. This work includes a translation of the Cittamatra section of the Essence of Eloquence along with a commentary by Professor Hopkins, reflecting the opinions of western scholars and nearly two dozen Tibetan commentaries. Also included is an emmended edition of the translated portion of the text. The portion translated presents Dzong-ka-ba's view of the Mind-Only school, based on a careful reading of the seventh chapter of the Samdhinirmocana Sutra. Dzong-ka-ba also considers other interpretations of the same sutra, especially those of the Indian proponent of Cittamatra, Asanga, and the Tibetan founder of the Jo-nang sect, Shey-rap-gyel-tsen. Dzong-ka-ba's text thus becomes the doorway to a lively, complex, and compelling debate with voices speaking from Sutra, the Indian and Tibetan commentarial traditions, the current Tibetan scholarship, and western scholarship. Professor Hopkins begins to make sense of the complex material, which will be examined in further detail in the forthcoming two volumes of this series. For those who wish to find a technical discussion of the philosophical issues raised by this text, this translation will be of greater service than that published already by Robert Thurman in The Central Philosophy of Tibet. Due to the difficulty involved in reading this material, this is something that I certainly welcome.

A wonderful trip through a fascinating period in History.Reading this account of History about the Georgian Bay area reminded me of many of the "oldtimers" I have met through the years on Manitoulin Island. I have been going there for 50 years and I have observed that a lot of this area has been standing still in time. Growth is very slow and rightly so, because of the inaccessibility of much of the land. The people I have met are true pioneers with the heart and spirit to match. They are hard-working people with a love of the land and a determination to make the most of what they have. We could all take a lesson from these people steeped richly in their heritage.

An exotic trip for the armchair adventurerI read this book years ago when I was in college. It was a delightful discovery. This obscure book from the 1920s is a collection of letters, many written for young readers, by an eccentric, enlightened and talented pair of travelers. The Barretts, alias Gypsy Davy and Lady Ba, traveled to exotic locales not as casual tourists but as serious students. This book grew out of a multi-year caravan with pack animals through Ladakh in 1923-24. The letters include vivid descriptions of the area's terrain, the history and the people they met and got to know, including Tibetan monks and Muslim explorers. The adventures tend to be low-key but the setting and content are fascinating in and of themselves. The overall tone reflects a love of life and respect for people of all types. All in all, this book is a rare and precious curio.
The Barretts wrote other books, even more obscure, about travels in other lands, too. After falling in love with this book, I read all I could find and deem them worth a read as well.

ExcellentThis is a very worthwhile book. It provides an excellent commentary on Irish company law. It considers the issues at the heart of the subject. I regret to say that the providers of this site are incorrect in their assertion that this book is out of print - it was @subjected@ to its third re-print in December 1997 - YAHOO please take note... I would unreservedly recommend this book to all readers.
