The Cowboy Rides Away
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (April, 2000)
Author: Betsy Thornton
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $1.39
Collectible price: $10.33
Chloe Newcomb is a Victim Witness, a volunteer social worker in an Arizona desert town who helps soften the bad news after an accident or crime. Called to a suicide scene, she recognizes the dead man as a figure from her East Coast activist past, a former lover she hasn't heard from in 20 years. In her first novel, Thornton manages to make Chloe both original and recognizable, the kind of person you'd expect to find liking country music (her title comes from a George Strait song), enjoying diner food and flirting with good-looking cowboys. And her descriptions of the desert under various conditions of time and weather make you understand why people choose to live there.

I Love It!
This book was a quick read with a plot that holds you and references to the '60's that I truely identified with. I hope Ms. Thornton keeps 'em comming!!!!

Realistic setting, authentic participants, you'll want more!
Such fun, interest, reality and adventure for a first novel! The Cowboy Rides Away, by Betsy Thornton, a must for mystery lovers and an extreme must for us mystery lovers in Arizona. Reviews usually refer to the author as Mr. or Ms., however, after reading this novel, you too, will simply refer to the author as Betsy. Her talent allows you to become involved, place yourself within the dusty setting, next to the characters, so that you also feel you know her well. A "quick read" in the sense nothing gets done until you close the back cover. The rating of 9? Only because I wanted the story to go on...

A well written mystery with vivid characters.
The Cowboy Rides Away is a very well written mystery, particularly for a first novel. The characters, even the minor ones, are so vivid they stay in your mind like the country song lyric from the title. The sense of place is also strong. Chloe Newcomb sees the Arizona desert as an outsider, which gives her description of it added sharpness. The mystery was fascinating and not created from a formula. I'll be looking for this author's future work.

an excellent, chilling read
Simply stated, this book is excellent. i read this first as a small boy in the late eighites and have serched for it ever since. i found it again only once, in high school a good 10 years later, and found none of the books terrifying potency diminished over the course fo time, perhaps because it speaks so clearly to one of my greatest personal fears (and that of so many others): the fear of being completly, utterly and inexplicably alone. After all, what WOULD you do fi you got up and found everyone you knew ahd simply vanished overnight, leaving no trace whatsoever? The stories protagonists, a group of high school teens, are forced to face just this delimma, and the seemingly preposterous, and yet horrifying possibility that they are indeed the last people left alive.

This book has stayed in my memory for over 20 years!!
I too read this book over 20 years ago when I was in grade school. I have tried for several years to find it since... but have not...in fact I thought I had the title incorrect until I looked it up in Amazon.com, I think this book is great and I'd like to find a copy of it to read again. It is a great story for young readers.

Remembered for over 20 years!
I read this book in 1973, and it has stuck in my memory for over 20 years. This is an intriguing book about a subject that, at the time, filled my heart with terror: Students arrive at school one morning to find that teachers and staff have disappeared. They embark on a search that reveals that everyone in their entire town is gone. I highly recommend this book. I think it would be most entertaining for 11 - 15 year-olds.

Perfect for Adopting Parents flying to bring home child
Wow! This book with its format and text is ideal for parents flying to pick up their most precious cargo: their new child!

my daughter's and my favorite children's book!
When exploring a children's bookstore one day I happened upon a book with a delicious cover! The colors were more vibrant than any other book I had ever seen. When I opened the book the pictures and die-cuts took my breath away! The book opened with soft clouds and a vibrant red orange sun and closed with a darkened yet comforting scene of the moon viewed from a hillside. On the hillside, in a tree is where the little bird returns to home. The words are melodic, yet do not have a need to be in the typical ababab rhyming sequence. My daughter loves this book! It is her favorite bedtime story and one that I do not mind reading again and again and again. At the age of 3 she was able to recite the words with me and now at 4 she likes to "read" it after me. If you can find a copy of this book, I suggest you scoop it up!

an adorable book that children will want read again and agai
This is a beautiful book about a bird making her way through the world and back home again. The illustrations are wonderfully done, there is a die-cut in each page which fascinates children. I gave it as a gift, and have been looking for more copies as the mother said it was her daughters favorite book.

Foreign at Home and Away : Foreign-Born Wives in the U.S. Foreign Service

Wonderfully written and insightful
As a career foreign service officer, I only wish Margaret Bender had written this wonderful book 30 years ago. Written in insightful, precise and unemotional prose, it provides invaluable insights into the many challenges facing foreign-born women who marry American diplomats and the different ways - successful and not so successful - in which they deal with them. It should be mandatory reading for all Ambassadors and senior foreign service officers who, like me, should have been far more sensitive to the personal and professional issues with which these women and their diplomat spouses must deal. There are wonderful stories of personal courage, determination, and love, along with examples of great resilience, creativity and humor. I was particularly fascinated with the stories of how the parents decided which language(s) they would speak with their children and how varied were the results, both linguistically and emotionally.
Like America itself, the diplomatic service is ultimately richer for the infusion of these women into the community. Margaret Bender has told their tales well and faithfully, and this book should move us all to appreciate these women and extend our hands in welcome.

diplomatic life with a twist
For anyone with an interest in what it is really like to be a diplomatic nomad, this book is a must. Bender has interviewed more than 30 diplomatic spouses. All of them are foreign born women married to American diplomats. Though these women's birth status adds an extra twist to their experiences, much of what is stated in the book can apply to all female spouses of diplomats, and probably many male spouses as well.

The women quoted in Bender's book, though, are especially brave, because for love they have left the familiar and ventured into the distinctly foreign. Not only do they have their new diplomatic postings to contend with, but also the adoption and integration of their husband's cultures. While American-born spouses might eventually feel that they have gone home when they return to Washington for a tour, these foreign born spouses do not even have that relief.

For anyone contemplating life as a foreign service spouse, this book is highly recommended. I would also recommend it to the employed diplomats, who, after reading it, may understand better what their spouses have to experience with the lifestyle.

This Book is Long Overdue
In a world where inter-cultural and inter-ethnic marriages are becoming more and more common, it is hard to believe that more hasn't been written on the topic. Although this book definitely focuses on the unique experiences of official spouses in the foreign service, it has much broader relevence. The stories of women who made definite choices to leave their homelands and become Americans is also timely given our current reexamination of "who is an American?" in post-September 11th America. I finished this book with much respect for the ongoing challenges that these women face year after year; as new ramifications of their marriage decisions emerge. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Getting Away with Murder
Published in Paperback by Dramatists Play Service Inc (January, 1997)
Author: Stephen Sondheim
Amazon base price: $5.95
From the creators of the musicals Company and Merrily We Roll Along comes this non-musical murder mystery that played briefly in San Diego and New York in 1995-96. In addition to his many Tony- (and even Pulitzer-) winning musicals, Stephen Sondheim is known as a devotee of intricate puzzles. George Furth is known for bitingly witty dialog. The play tells what happens when members of a group therapy circle arrive to find their therapist murdered and evidence that one of them did it. They must work through their neuroses and discover the killer before, one by one, all of them are bumped off. Even the secondary efforts of the greats are worth analyzing, and now readers will have a chance to do what few theatergoers got to.
Average review score:

A witty and gripping script . . .
This is a very good, well-made play. A social commentary in one sense, and Sondheim's stab at the seven deadly sins. It is very funny to read all of the bitchy quips being tossed back and forth by each of the patients. A dark atmosphere, keeping you on the edge of your seat, and you are always kept guessing. Finding out who the killer is at the end of the first act is a very daring device, and you are left to wonder what would possibly happen in the second act. It is hard for me to say anything more that the other reviewers haven't said, so I just suggest that all intellectuals out there buy this book and prepare to enjoy yourself. (You might even need a cigarette when you're done with this book, if you know what I mean . . . )

I loved "Getting Away With Murder"
"Getting Away With Murder" is great, I enjoyed reading it very much. Not only for the mystery, but the plot, the thrill, the way it was written. I'm not big on Murder mystery's, although I do enjoy reading some. When I read the script I thought, WoW! This is really a great story. I would have loved to have watched it on Broadway. I adore it, the storyline is great from begining to end. For those who haven't read the book, read it! For those who have read it, read it again!

I enjoyed it!
I picked up a copy of "Getting Away With Murder" because I enjoy theatrical works that Terrence Mann has been in,and I figured this would be yet another that I liked. I'm really glad that I decided to get it.

Besides being a theatre fan,I love a good mystery. I couldn't put it down once I picked it up. Sondheim and Furth do such a wonderful job of establishing the setting and characters that I could vividly imagine what the staging of the play may have looked like. Each character clearly has dimension, and you really feel like you understand their motives and convictions.

"GAWM" is also filled with little plot quirks and devices that enhance the story. While it has a dark mood, there are some light comedic moments and caustic remarks that loosen things up. It is also interesting to see the slight difference in the alternate ending.

All in all,I recommend it. I'm not overly familiar with Sondheim's work, but I've found that his cerebral approach is a nice escape. As a closing note,I suggest paying attention to the names of the characters - you might learn something about them!

"God" gave us Kevin Kling . . .
Kevin Kling is a man of great wit, compassion and love. One of his constant quotes is, "God made people because he wanted an endless supply of stories." One can only hope Kevin's experiences, imagination and career are endless.
In this CD, or tape, enjoy tales of squirrel taxidermy, rental house maintainence, genealogical lightning vendettas, Mershing pickles and theatrical censorship in Czechoslovokia. And when you're done, and are howling for more, demand that Amazon.com carry "Stories off the Shallow End" and "Wonderlure."

Hilarious and moving
No one on this Earth is funnier than Kevin Kling. Kling's anecdotes, covering his childhood and adult years, are rich with sidesplitting humor and are also at times very emotionally moving.

Wonderful, riveting group of essays.
My whole family loves this tape-we play it over and over again. Kevin Kling's choice of subject matter and his presentation are as close to perfection as I've ever heard. I'm sure this work would stand up well on the printed page, but don't miss Kling's taped rendition!

The first half of the tape deals with his childhood and the second half with adult experiences. They are all well thought-out essays and Kling's delivery is wonderful, at times hilarious. I especially loved his pieces on Halloween, painting the house, and being struck by lightning.

We first heard Kevin Kling reading "Halloween Pickles" (included on "Home and Away") on NPR while driving and had to pull the car off the road because we were laughing so hard. I hope this guy writes a million more essays and puts them all on tape.

It gives the reader a restoration or inception of faith!
Just A Breath Away: Tell Me How To Die, I've Never Done This Before by Reverend Edward Tabbitas is more than its title claims. Although it does help one deal with the emotional upheaval of death, it also serves as a handbook for coping with the many emotions, pains, joys and sorrows experienced from infancy to adulthood in everyday life. Since the book shares real heart rendering situations, each person reading it will find an issue to relate to and learn from. I have read the book through twice, a few months apart and each time it was in one sitting due to its mesmerizing content. The second time, I developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of its intended message. If you've lost your way and your faith, it will be restored. If you've never believed, you will after the first few pages.

I could not put the book down.
The book has given me a better understanding of what has happened to the love ones that I thought I lost. After reading Rev. Edward Tabbitas book I now realize that they are still with me. Many of his stories have touched me in a very special way. It made me cry, at times it made me sad, happy and made me at times laugh. It left me with a warmth in my heart that I have never felt before. This is definitely a book that is a must read. I have given this book to friends as a gift, and all of my friends that received this wonderful book have passed on to me their feelings of the beauty of this book. I must thank the author for this most moving book.

Rev. E. Tabbitas teaches us that dying is only a begining.
I was taught by my mother who is now 82yrs young, never to be afraid of the dead its the living that only hurts us. Reading this book confirms that. I have recommended this book to all my family and friends. They call me and tell me what an easying reading book it is. That you just can't put it down. Most of them finished the book in two days. Rev. Ed is like a brother to me and I have with my own eyes witnessed many of the stories that he has shared with all of us is this wonderful book. He is a man of many wonderful insights I have recommend him to all that have lost love ones. I feel that this book will give much insight to those who have lost love ones. It will show them that they are never futher then as Ed puts it Just a Breath Away. As you read all of the true stories he has shared you will as I did cry, laugh and say whow I can relate to that. Believe me one thing you will not do is regret that you purchased the book.
